Problems with library on external harddrive

Hey!
I've got my entire iTunes library on an external harddrive, and that causes me some problems because the harddrive sometimes changes which drive letter it connects to (etc, suddently jumping from e: to g:).
When this happens of course, iTunes cannot find any of my songs, so I have to delete all songs from the library, change the library location again, and add the songs once more, destroying my playlists and sometimes even duplicating the songs so I got like 3 versions of each song.
Is there a quicker way to do this? The file location is the same exept that it's "e:\itunes folder" instead of "g:\itunes folder" etc. This kinda drives me crazy sometimes:p
Please help?
I'm using XP btw, and know enough to be able to quickly change the e:\ to g:\ if it is any way possible of having the "tracklist" in an external file, etc.

Awhile ago I read about a way to force external drives to use a designated drive letter. Something about a file on the drive that gets read when drive is plugged in?
Also, check drive letter after plugging in drive but before starting itunes, fix as necessary. I have to do similar due to using my network drive for iTunes. Must always check drive before starting iTunes. It is always same letter but if connection is not established before starting iTunes I get library problem. Simply close iTunes, get connection, restart iTunes has always worked for me.

  • Problems with library on external HD

I recently moved my entire itunes library to an external HD. It worked very well for a few weeks but now my mac is not able to recognize the drive. I tried to repair the problem using disk utility but was not able to. I was then prompted to back up and erase the drive and start over. I have two questions. Is there a way for me to back up the drive without use of an additional external HD? (I don't really have the funds to go out and buy another.) If I'm not able to back up the drive before I erase it I would assume that my itunes library will be lost as itunes will not be able to locate the media files. I have my entire library on my ipod. If I were to uninstall itunes totally and then reinstall it is it possible for me to transfer all the media from my ipod back to the new itunes? Thanks in advance for any help.

See this post from forum regular Zevoneer for options on moving your iPod data back to your computer.
Reformatting you external drive may fix the current issues, however I would be worried that it might fail again in the near term. You should look to replace it as soon as possible.

  • Transfer iphoto library to external harddrive. Best practice?

Need to transfer iphoto library to external harddrive due to space issues. Best practice?

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Strange problem with linking to external vob-file

I have a strange problem with linking to external vob-file. I
have created a link using BudApi:
    on mouseup
set OK = baOpenFile ( the pathname &
    "Files\General\Video\VTS_01_1.VOB", "normal")
    end
This code opens mpg-videos correctly, but nothing happens
when I try to open vob-files with the same code. The strangest
thing is that when I change the default program for vob-files to
WinDVD this code works and the file opens, but when I change the
default program to Nero Showtime this code doesn't do anything
(when I open the file 'manually' from the folder, it opens
correctly on Nero Showtime). My client uses Nero Showtime, so I
really would appreciate any help on this one.

If you open a command prompt, do you get an association
    listed like this
    example for .txt files:
    C:\>assoc .txt
    .txt=txtfile
    C:\>ftype txtfile
    txtfile="D:\Program Files\JGsoft\EditPadLite\EditPadLite.exe"
    "%1"

  • Old Library on External Harddrive not recognised on new PC for iTunes

Hi, I've just bought a new pc after my old one gave up one me. I have my iTunes library saved to an external harddrive and I've changed the Library name to that of my harddrive location in Prefences>General>Library Name. I also changed The Preferences Advanced tab>iTunes Music folder location to point to the external harddrive location where my music files are and no music appears in my library. All I want is my library off my ipod to be replicated back into the itunes library as i've a lot of history here. Can it be done?

  • Move iPhoto Library to external harddrive

    Good evening all...
I've done some searching and see a few different possibilites for using an Alternate iPhoto Library on an external harddrive. I'm hoping for opinions on the best option for what I wish to accomplish.
In my line of photography, I tend to focus on a specific event and then backup that event to remove it from my local hard disk (archive it if you will). In the past, I have done this by burning to CD, but now have a pretty decent sized external harddrive that I would like to take advantage of.
After reading some other threads, I have noticed that some folks choose to relocate their iPhoto Library to a external harddrive and set it as the working iPhoto directory. I am wondering if this is a good option for me, as I prefer to keep my local harddrive clean? Is an external harddrive a safe option for primary storage? Chalk my fear of storing locally to years of Windows failures.
If this is a good option for me, could somebody explain the procedures of setting this up? This is my first Mac and I am still somewhat cautious as to how I proceed with things such as this.
If this is a bad option for me, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your time!
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   iPhoto 6

Take a look at this Apple KB document: iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users, particularly the screen show regarding ignoring ownership on the external HD. That will avoid problems that might pop up if permissions were turn on and some image file locked you out for some reason. It does happen at times.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Not able to access my iPhoto library from external harddrive

I get this message when I attempt to access my iphoto Library from my LeCie external hard drive.  "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable. Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup.
I'm nervous to do as instructed for fear of deleting my photos from the external harddrive.

What format is the external drive? Has the iPhoto library been working on the external drive in the past? What recently changed? what ahppened when you tried

  • Transfering iPhoto library to External Harddrive

I am trying to transfer my iPhoto library to my External Harddrive, but it says it is going to take one day. I dont feel like USB 3.0 should take one day to transfer 50gb of pictures... Any fix to this problem?

    Ignore it
The finder is a very poor estimated of time - it will change radically as it progresses - and however long it takes is how ling it takes - there is no way to change that
Is the external drive formatted Mac OS Extended (journaled)? - to use the iPhoto library it must be that format

  • Problem with links for external user

    Hi,
We´re using SAP NetWeaver Portal 2004s SPS 10 and we have a problem with links within notification-mails:
The link to the document (e.g. within a subscription mail) consists of "http:///...". Only user using the portal within our network can open this links. All external user can´t open this links. How can I change the URL so that our external user can open the links, too?
    Thanks for help,
    Sven Keller

We already have another URL for external usage. My problem is how to define that created links to documents and folder are automatically using the external URL.
If somebody receives an email (e.g. subscription) the URL to the folder is:
    http://<portalserver>:51000/irj/go/km/navigation/documents/Public Documents/Documentation
    But it should be:
    https://<externalportal>/irj/go/km/navigation/documents/Public Documents/Documentation

  • Problems with sound from external speakers after iOS 5.0.1 update

Have others experienced problems with external speakers on the Iphone 4 after iOS 5.0.1 update?  My phone no longer rings, sounds when i receive a text message, sounds alarm, etc.  Vibrate works fine and when i plug in headphones I can hear music through the headphones.  Any fixes for this?

    Hi Guys,
I have post eariler on another forum and I have the same problem, I have tried all the things listed here and nothing was perminant in fixing this painful iphone hating problem.... and failed.  You probably have the problem when you use youtube or your music external speaker that there is no volume bar and no sound.   I have had the same problem But I need to happily say that I now have the fix!!!!  This worked for me and I fixed it by myself so you don't need to go to apple or service centre or anything.
Ok I like so many of you here truly believed this was as IO5 issue as it only dropped the sound on the speakers once that IO5 update came along.  I tried a bunch of reset, reboots, home clicks, lock and unlocks, to fix this and all failed.  some worked for an hour but then failed.  hours of my life that I will never get back.   but since I have learnt this is not a IO5 problem but a hardware issue! ...  and in paticualar is has to do with your bottom connection.  Your phone is thinking it is docked all the time.
To fix the no sound problem what you need is...
    1.  a torch
    2.  a tooth brush
    3.  methalated spirits
    4. a butter knife
    Step 1.
get your torch and shine it down the bottom connection plate to see what kind of dust, sand, hair or anything you have stuck in there.   all that need to be removed!  everything!  it might look clean but still thats ok go to step 2.
    step 2.
Turn on your music app and put the speakers on!  If your phone is like mine it should not work.  you most probably don't even have the volume display to turn it on but its ok, just do it! and it should still play with no sound.   its important you try and run the speakers as this will show you that it is a hardware problem.
    step 3.
Dip your tooth brush into some methated sprits.   then at your sink tap the exess metho out of your brush as you just want the brushes to be slightly damp, not soaking wet and then scrub the bottom connetiors on your iphone.  work the brush back and forward in a way that scoops the dirt out of the phone, not just pushing it side to side.
(As you bushing you should notice the volume bar come back on or off as you scub.   This happened to me and that is how I realised I was on the right track to fixing this problem as I was doing something external that was actually controling when the volume display came on or off.   but once I cleaned it this still didn't fix the problem...)
    Step 4.
Use the back side of a butter knife (not the sharp side) to gently slide over the connectors on the iphone.  Do this gently as you are only pushing down on the tiny metal contect bars and you should notice the volume display come on again.  slide it back and forward.  Now the area of interest is about 2/3 along the connection plate to the right.   This is the area that has the infomation sent when your iphone thinks its docked.
This has worked for me and I have not had a problem since I did this 2 weeks ago.   I have since learnt that the new IOS 5 has activated a different part of the bottom conectors.  if you have been using dodgy connectors or unapproved apple cables (as I was)  any damage or hair and dirt on the terminal this is effecting it.  Try it.   just remember if you can do something external to your phone then there lies the problem.
Hope this works for your phone as it did for mine.
    Cheers

  • TV Show download problem with library on a network share

My local drive has 100GB disk space available. I have my iTunes library configured to be on a network share which happens to be on a NAS (network attached storage) drive. My NAS drive has over 600GB disk space available. When I try to download a TV Show (Battlestar Galactica) I get an error which says that:
"The disk you are attempting to use is full"
This is nowhere near true. I tried several times, then switched my iTunes library to point to my local drive, and the download worked. Does iTunes have a problem with a library on a network share?
    Help!
    Thanks,
    Brad

Not easy because in order to open just one library file you would have to be running the same version of iTunes on all computers which would be limited to the lowest version supported by your computers (the G3).  Try to open a iTunes 10 library with 9.2.1 and it will refuse. This in turn might not support your equipment.  Even if you can do this you would have to make sure only one copy of iTunes was running because the library file cannot be opened by multiple copies of iTunes at the same time.

  • How do you export aperture library to external harddrive?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Im trying to save my entire Aperture library to an external harddrive. What are my options other than using Time Machine? Thanks

    Managed or Referenced Library?
    Assuming it's a Managed library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit Aperture
    2. Copy the Aperture Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching Aperture. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're using a Referenced Library then you'll need to relocate the Masters first.

  • Problem with a new external monitor

I'm having some trouble with my new external monitor (Samsung BX 2231)
Last week when I connected the screen, there where no problems at all. I was using it as an extension of my desktop (as a second screen).
When I changed the wallpaper of the external monitor, I accidentally chose the wrong file (I'm not sure which one), From that moment, my dock is freezing.
Every time I tried to connect the monitor (as an second monitor), the dock is crashing.
I can use the monitor as an 'clone', then everything is working fine. When I change it back to be a second screen, the dock crashed again.
To solve the problem, I tried many options:
    - Reset the PRAM
    - Reset the SME
    - Remove the file 'com.apple.windowsserver.plist
    - Start the mac in 'safe' mode
    - Remove all the images from the images folder (where I chose the 'wrong' file)
What are the other options? can someone help me?
    Regards YkeBert

I have the same problem. Do you also have these in the system log:
