Problems with MacBook Pro keyboard

Several months ago I spilled sauce on my keyboard and several keys became difficult to hit. Since then I have been using a Bluetooth keyboard with no problems. Now, the last several days, the original keyboard has been causing many issues: cannot scroll with external mouse, cannot open links in Safari and same links in Chrome go to brand new windows, and rebooting my computer has put it in safe mode where I can't access many things. Is there something I can do to disable the old keyboard or would I need to take it in to be fixed?

Before assuming the problem is with the keyboard itself, I'd be wondering about the ribbon cable that connects it , IvanBaby.

When I hit letter 'h', it will come out as 'dh'..
When I hit letter 'c', it will come out as 'cn'..
When I hit letter 'n', it will come out as 'cn'..
    please help me out..?

If it turns out to be a hardware problem with the keyboard and the repair is done through Apple, be prepared for a sticker-shock price to fix it. The problem is that Apple considers the keyboard as an integral part of the top-half of the aluminun enclosure (it's called the top case & is CNC milled and quite complex)...to Apple, it is considered one-piece and one part number (top case). The keyboard is held onto the top case with many (~60) very tiny screws and this entire top case is the part that will be replaced. They will NOT replace only the keyboard.
I had the power button quit on my Late 2011 MacBook Pro 13". To fix it through Apple would've cost well over $500. The power button is part of the keyboard assembly (it's not removable from the keyboard and uses the same flex cable assembly) so the keyboard itself needs to be changed. I found the exact replacement keyboard on eBay for ~$30 and changed it myself. There is absolutely nothing trivial about replacing it. It was a huge pain in the butt, especially swapping the keyboard on the top case with all of those teenie-tiny screws. It took me the better part of a day to do it but I've had experience with this type of work for at least 20 years now. If I need to do it again for some reason, it will likely be quicker.
Just beware that a repair could cost some big bucks, even if it's only "just the keyboard".

  • Problem with MacBook Pro keyboard backlight after migrating from pb dlsd

Can anybody help please? I\ve got this very annoying problem where the keyboard light doesn't work properly in my main user a/c which I migrated in from my powerbook 1.67. Ir is obviously something to do with imported library settings but I can't find how to get it to work properly - new user a/cs set up on the mbp work as they should. Unfortunately I have a n enormous pile of configurations which I need to continue using from my old a/c

How old is your MacBook Pro? If it didn't ship with 10.4.10, then maybe you can run the 10.4.10 combo updater for Intel over again:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10410comboupdatev11intel.html
If it did ship with 10.4.10, sometimes hardware issues like these can be repaired by a simple zap of PRAM:

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
This, Adobe Flash Player 12.0.0.70, is the current version of Flash. It should work with Snow Leopard or later.

  • Problem with Macbook Pro early 2011, webcam not working in any apps and windows 7 or 8 on bootcamp, keyboard backlight not working?

    Hi Guys
I recently bought a second hand early 2011 Macbook Pro 15 inch and are having 2 problems. The first is that none of the apps detects my webcam at all, the second is, i have Windows 8 installed on bootcamp but are unable to get the keyboard backlight to work in 7 or 8. The backlight works perfect in os x 10.8.5 though. I need a little bit of help guys.....

Go to Apple Menu / About This Mac. Click on More Info ... next on System Report. In the left hand column, under Hardware, select USB. The right side will show the USB Device Tree. Look through that and check for "Built-in iSight". That is your camera. If it is not listed the camera is not working.
For backlighting, try this: go to System Preferences / Keyboard. Uncheck "Adjust keyboard lighting in low light".

  • Problem with Macbook Pro 15 (Late 2007)

What I did is that I tried to install a 500gb threw the macbook. Then suddently, the macbook pro did not wanted to reconize the gb that I put in. I tried all the shortcut keys and none of them work. It only stayed with a Apple Logo with the circle on the bottom spinning. It freezes sometimes. I tried everything, & it still freezing and did all the trick.
Yesturday, It did not decided to turn on. The screen did not want to turn on. The blinking light on the bottom did not want to turn on also. I clicked on the power on but it actually turned on but the screen and the blinking light did not wanted to turn on. I tried on the keyboard, & it did not wanted to turn on the lights. I tried everything my best to get it back working.
Please help me with this problem. Maybe for me I think its the logic board. I'm not sure because once I got it, It was working 100% except for the apple and circle on the bottom spinning.
Thank you for reading and helping,
    DaddyCorrupted

You must first prep the new drive then install OS X on it:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Problems with Macbook Pro sleep

Hey guys, I'm currently hacing issues with my Macbook Pro going to sleep when left for the ammount of time specified in Energy Saver. I set the times (with power cord plugged in) to 1 minute for display sleep and 2 minutes for computer sleep, after 1 minute the display dimmed and then blacked out as it should have done, but the computer itself did not sleep at all even after being left for over 5 minutes.
I have tried rebooting and shutting down and the problem is sitll there, if anyone can help me I'd greatly appreciate it!
My macbook is early 2011 and I'm running Mountain Lion.

Thanks for the help, I have read this but still can't locate the problem, I have looked in activity moniter for background applications, I have no external drives either. It sleeps fine when I select sleep from the menu but does not auto sleep in the time from energy saver.
I have ben through the checklist at the bottom of that page, I have bluetooth turned off, file sharing off, no external mouse/keyboard either.

  • Problem with MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1

I've installed the MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1 on my 17" MacBook Pro. Seems to have fixed any keyboard issues I may have been experiencing. But every time I run software update this particular update wants to be installed again. I've run the install three times and it's still being flagged as being needed.
    Anyone else having this problem?
Only thing that I suspect is that it's because I've got my HD formatted as case-sensitive. I've noticed that formatting a drive as case-sensitive will break several popular games.
Can't we standardize on case-sensitive volumes yet, it's the 21st century for crying out loud!

    I had the same issue.
How did you figure this out?
I was on the phone for almost two hours (mostly waiting) with support and they simply came up with 'Archive' and 'Store' and 'Rebuild' your system, which quite frankly would not have fixed this issue because I still would have a case-sensitive drive.

  • Graphic problems with Macbook Pro Late 2011 13"

I'll try to explain it as clear as possible. This started to happen a couple weeks ago:
My Macbook screen started to being white-blurred, and the image slows down while this happen. At first I thought that was happening randomly, but then -I guess- I realised that it was lid-related; when I open the lid more than 90 degrees the problem started to happen, sometimes it starts to happen even if the lid is in its 'working fine area' though , but after moving the lid up and down several times, it gets 'fixed'... until it happens again. There are times when it doesn't get fixed instantaneously, and it's really driving me crazy.
My first thought was that it might be the flex (not sure if this is the right name of it tough), I mean the cable that goes from the screen to the logic board. If so, or even in another case scenario, I have an Early 2011 Macbook Pro 13" where I can use any part, except for the logic board, if needed.
    Thanks in advance.

Well the Apple logo will always be visible through the screen when there is a fairly bright light behind the screen.
    That is totally normal.
As for the freezing and since this is your first Mac computer I would like to make you aware of one thing.
The way Mac OS X operating system works is slightly different then Windows. In Windows when you click the X in the upper right hand corner of the program you are using that program closes freeinig up the memory it was using. In the Apple OS, OS X, when you click the X in the upper left hand corner of the windows you are using all that does is close that active window. It dos not close the program. So if you have started up 2-3-4-5-6 programs to do something in them and then clicked the X all you have done is closed those windows for all those programs. The programs is still running. So you can end up with several programs using memory when they shouldn't be. You have to actually close those program by first using Command+Tab to see what programs are still open then go to the menu bar on the right side where the name of the program is displayed and click on that name and select Quit Program Name. Or once the name of the program is in the menu bar press Command+Q (Quit) to close that program.
Get in the habbit of always using that keyboard shortcut when you are done using a program.
Having multiple program open will cause the system to run slow.
The hard drive Apple is putting the newer Macbook Pros are of the slower type. Running at 5400RPMs as opposed to the faster 7200RPM models. Why I don't know as the faster drives don't cost that much more. Because of this all program run slightly slower. To open, to save files to and when used as a swap disk to expand on the physical memory in the computer. Which in turn will make the system seem sluggish and can casue some freezes.
So make sure you have closed all programs before opening another, and only have at the most 2-3 progams open at the same time.

  • PROBLEM WITH MACBOOK PRO 2.4 Dual Core and MOTU Ultralite

    Hello,
I Recently bought a macbook pro to have for my Live appearance.
I also had a motu Ultralite which worked super well with my Pc and with the macbook the first days
One day i had to play live in a club so i connect my soundcard but the macbook wont recognize it coz i cant see the popup window that i get everytime i connect my motu on it...i rebooted the soundcard then the laptop nothing...i started sweating coz my live performance would start in 20 minutes noting came out of it so i cancelled the gig for the moment and played a Dj set instead.
When i got home i connected the card again and was working perfectly till yesterday..So i thought there was something wrong with the Power in the Venue or something like that.
Yesterday i connected the soundcard and again does the same any other firewire device was working properly.
I searched online and saw there is alot of people having the same issue but no solution.can someone tell WHY sometimes it works and sometimes doesnt??its very stupid to have 2 machines with a cost of 2500 euro almost and they dont work well together
    Op system: Leopard 10.5.7
    Motu ultralite Mk2 firmware: 1.15
    motu ultralite driver 1.4.21
    Thank you in advance

Popping in to say that I have now a fully functional Ultralite (mk3) under OS X 10.5.8 on my Macbook.
I have found that people who have upgraded the firmware to 1.15 were having problems (according to the MOTU site this upgrade isn't actually meant for the mk3 anyways) with Leopard (maybe Snow Leopard too?) and needed the 1.00 version of the firmware.
Using the drivers supplied on the MOTU CD, the device would not appear when connected to the Macbook. However, removing these from the system prior to downloading the latest MOTU Universal driver from their website seems to have solved it.
Now after installing the universal drivers from the website the device works without any problems (driver 1.4.23 of MOTU Audio Setup). Hope this helps someone

  • Problem with Macbook Pro 2,66Ghz and 4GB Kingston memory

    Hi all,
    I bought 2x 2GB Kingston memory(SODIMM - DDR2 @ 667MHz) in order to upgrade my MBP.
When I install both modules, the MBP won;t boot. I get a blank screen.
If I use 1 Kingston module at a time (1x1GB(original memory module)and 2GB(Kingston)) .It works fine.
Both of the Kinston RAM modules seem to be working fine, when not installed together, but MBP doesn;t start when both are installed at the same time.
Any idea of what the problem could be?
Is related to my MBP or it has to do with the Kingston Modules?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi, I'm having the same problem on the 2.4 (early 2008 2.4 GHz macbook pro.) I bought 2x 2gb Crucial RAM and installed correctly, but the machine doesn't start up. So, I tried every conceivable combination, but the new 2gb RAM only works when paired with one of the old 1gb sticks giving me 3 gb total.
The new 2gb sticks BOTH work (when paired with old RAM), just not together. The 2gb RAM they sold me shows its speed as 6400 800mHz -- Could the faster speed be the problem? My system profiler shows the 800mHz RAM as 667mHz when it is installed.
D.P. it looks like you have the same mbp as me. I talked to Apple Support on the phone a couple weeks ago doing my own research and learned (i'm not SUPER tech-savvy) that the laptop is 800mhz but will only accept ram of 667mhz because the computer has to be faster than the memory installed in it. They cannot be the same speeds. Don't know if this would cause the problem you are having, though.

  • SSD-problem with MacBook Pro 13" (Early 2011)

    Hi there,
I've tried to use two different SSDs in my MacBook Pro 13" (early 2011). The first one (Samsung 840 Series, 500GB) crashed after two days: the beachball appeared and after a restart there was this question mark-symbol on my screen: no system found. Had to send this SSD back to Amazon. A few days later I've bought a new one, a SanDisk Extreme with 450GB. I've used it for two days, then my system crashed again and after a restart of my Mac I couldn't get any further than to the grey apple-symbol. Even the recovery partition didn't work anymore. Does anyone of you have the same problem with his (or her) MacBook Pro 13" (early 2011) - and any ideas for a solution?
    Thanks for your answers!

  • Problem with MacBook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro for 2 weeks.
Transfering all data, amail from the Lenovo to MacBook Pro and everything works fine until lunch time today.
Go to the meeting without any problem, return to my desk , lock the MacBook Pro then go out for lunch.
Come back the MacBook Pro is acting very slow, can not open any Applications.
Use Disk Utility to verify, take more than 1 hour to verify and it asks to be repaired?
    Invalid Node structure
The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired
Error: This disk needs to be repaired... then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.
Click on the Repair Disk Permissiond and it says that it will take 1 day and 21 hours to complete.
    - Is the hard drive going bad?
    - Will I loose all the data?
    - Can Apple recover without destroying my data?
Moving to a Mac with the thought that it was better than IBM but my first impression is wrong....
    Any suggestion or recommendation?
    Thanks all.

Unfortunately if you were to take it into an ARS (Apple Retail Store) They wouldn't be able to assist you in recovering the data, Apple doesn't like to be liable for data loss if something happened and they weren't able to recover your data.
Seems like the issue in specific might be with the operating System, I'd reccomend booting into Lion Recovery (Hold the Command key and the letter R on startup) Hold those keys till you get to a screen that says Choose english as the main language, You'll see Utilities, Open disk utility try to run a repair there, If that doesn't work
I'd reccomend trying to do an Archive and Install, Just reinstall the operating system from this recovery partition, Your data will remain in tact.
If that doesn't work, You'll probably have to make a Genius Appointment.
