Problems with most recent Leopard upgrade
Since the most recent upgrade of Leopard, my dual G5 is having major issues: external drives disappear, CS3 will not boot, says it is locked but it is not. Virex software crashes half way thru. iphoto buddy will not open new libraries. My install of Leopard went fine but now I am ready to go back to Tiger.

Virex is not compatible with Leopard. When I migrated, I received a warning to that effect. It's a well-known issue - it crashes partway through a scan.
It has been replaced by MacAffe's VirusScan 8.6

Problem with most recent apple combo software update
So about a month ago I posted here about a problem I'd been having for a while that others seemed to have as well, with safari crashing and for me dashboard as well. Looking at my crash report, I was advised that most likely this was a javascript error and I did an archive install of Leopard and this did fix the problem.
However, of course the Leopard from my install disk was a little old, so today when I did all the updates again, lo and behold, my problem is back. Looking at the date that the last combo update pack came out (mid June) I'm pretty sure this is when my problem started, and now its back again because I know that's one of the updates that I just did on my computer.
So my question is, has anyone else experienced problems with this recent update, and secondly, what can I do? Should I re- archive/install and not do the update, and then just wait until the next combo update? I did the updates in order to get my itunes back in order, but I don't know if it would be detrimental to my other programs to not do this last combo update... And is there anyway I can go into my system and fix this while keeping up the update? Its just strange to me that no one else I know is having this problem, even though they keep up-to-date on all the software updates.

That's very strange. Can you download anything from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ ?
Launch Keychain Access, select Keychain First Aid from its left-hand menu, enter your password, select verify, and click on start. If that shows any problems, then select repair. If not, select X509Anchors, click on the top item, and then click the down arrow key until you find a bad/invalid certificate. -
Problems with games after leopard upgrade
After i upgraded to leopard iv been having trouble with some games (like bf 2142), they wont open, as soon as i click on the game it quits right away, anyone having this problem too? or anyone have any solutions??

I am a Cisco network support engineer, I have a recommendation, before you upgrade any device in the future. Always keep in mind to make a backup of your data, in this way if you have to reset the device to factory settings you will not lose that information. Having said that, reset the router to the fabric configuration using the back little button, remember when you do that, you are going to loose your current configuration.

I would like to know what i have to do to do to the hardware/software and approximately how much it would cost? I am new to Mac, this was received as a hand me down. Would it be less trouble to get a new one?
You can really only upgrade your HDD & RAM, everything else like CPU etc is hardsoldered onto the logic board and not upgradable.
However, your macbook already supports the current Snow Leopard, and the CPU has 64-bit architecture.
Also the maximum RAM it will run is 3GB. Apple say's 2, but it will run 3.
Not sure how well it would run on 2GB to be honest. Someone else might be able to answer that.
If you're still running your original HDD then you must be pretty pressed for space right now. And drive is probably nearing the end of it's life. I hope your in the habbit of backing up to an external regularly.
I would suggest investing in a new machine since your's is around 4 years old. -

Firefox has suddenly gone wrong. I was successfully running both Firefox and Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7. My laptop is new and has plenty of RAM and HDD. I auto-accept upgrades including the most recent Firefox upgrade and the suggested upgrade to Adobe Flash 10.1. But after this, Firefox stopped working and does not work when I re-load Firefox 3.6. Also IE8 now works very slowly and does not locate major websites like Microsoft without a 'can't find the website message' and having to pressing Return a second time. When I do get to the Mozilla website and click on the button to try to download Firefox 3.6.6, I get this message "Oops! Internet Explorer could not find mozilla3.snt.utwente.nl". Can you help with what has gone wrong? As it stands, I can't use Firefox at all. Note: because Firefox did not work after the upgrade, I've downloaded the IE8 version of the Adobe Flash 10.1. What I really want is to be able to use both Firefox and IE8. But is this possible if they use different versions of Adobe Flash?

After upgrading to Ffx 3.6.6, the program asks you to upgrade to Flash Player Plugin 10.1. I download and installed 10.1 only to find videos weren't loading.
In my case, the problem is the previous installation of Flash Player (9.0.47) was somehow messing things up. To fix this, because I already had Flash plugin 10.1 installed I had to uninstall 10.1 using the uninstaller from adobe and then manually remove any files related the old flash player plugin 9.0.47
Here is a run-down of my process:
0. To check if you have a previous installation of the Flash Plugin lurking around, in Firefox go to Tools -> Add-ons -> Plugins (tab). At this point you may seen both Flash plugins.
1. Proceed to uninstall Flash Plugin 10.1. Adobe provides an uninstaller here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
( you have to make sure you have nothing running when you execute the installer).
2. On my Mac (sorry I don't know what it is in Windows) I searched the hard drive for any files/folders with "Shockwave". I found a folder called "Shockwave 10". It wasn't removed by Adobe's uninstaller. For safety I deleted it and then emptied the trash.
3. I then went to My HD -> Library -> Internet Plugins.
Remove the file and folder named "Flash player.old"
4. Restarted; ran the Adobe Flash Player 10.1 installer. Restarted again.
5. Opened up ffx and double checked the plugins list (see step 1). Version 10.1 is installed and available. Went to problem sites to test it out and Success!

Am running Firefox 3.6.10. Am having problems with Firefox crashing after upgrading to Kaspersky Internet Security 2011. Anyone else having same problem. Oh, BTW am still using Windows XP operating system.
The latest flash player release is 11,0,1,152.
Can you upgrade to this version and see whether the crash stil exists?

After burning CD tried to print jeweled case insert and playlist is typed over. Never had this problem until most recent update to newest version of Itunes
Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.) -

All I was wondering if anyone was having issues with Lightrooms beta and pointing devices… while I’m sure the Wacom Introus4 is dying in Lightroom I can’t verify that my Mouse is as well.
I’m using the most recent Beta of Lightroom and Wacom Tablet Driver 615-3a… I’m sure the issue dosent reside with another program because the tablet only stops working in Lightroom. Basically I loose all tablet functionality until I reboot whin I attempt to access the Film Strip… I’ve repeated a few times and with each it dies…Unfortunately, although you are getting problems with your Wacom and Lr, the solution for the short term is to re-install an older driver for the tablet until Wacom come up with a new update to fix the prolem. This has been a long running problem for users when operating Lr with Wacom tablets.
(I offer this solution not from personal experience, but from what other tablet users have reported in previous threads, and there have been several). -

After the iPhone4 story, now this...incredible! Going back to my reliable BlackBerry! It just ain't reliable and takes forever to fix a problem.I have the same issue after iOS 4.2.1 update. I am using iPhone 3GS officially unlocked by Apple. I tried using different SIM cards and both carriers show same problem when using phone in 3G mode. Phone falls back to EDGE mode showing 'E' from '3G' at start. I have reset the phone and rebooted several times and moved to different cell areas in the city just to verify the problem.
I had no such issues earlier. I also have Nokia E71 which shows full signal and has no such issues.
I have posted the bug on apple iphone feedback page. I hope they Apple will fix the problem and test the release properly on all models before releasing to public. -
Problems with ViaVoice under Leopard, especially key mapping problems
ViaVoice's behavior has changed considerably under Leopard. First I will discuss the key mapping problem, since I'm eagerly looking for an answer to this problem. At the end of this post, I will voice some of the other problems I've experienced for those who may be interested. The key mapping problem may be specific to the fact that I use a foreign keyboard with a US version of ViaVoice.
INTRO:
I have used ViaVoice on my Mac for years, more or less without problems (ViaVoice's bugginess is notorious).
Those who know ViaVoice will know that one has two general options for dictation. One can dictate into ViaVoice's so-called SpeakPad, which allows special formatting, editing and dictation error correction within the dictated text, or one can dictate into "external" software such as Microsoft Word, in which case ViaVoice just sends a string of characters to that software. SpeakPad appears to make strong use of the operating system's built-in functionality for character formatting, document formatting, etc.
*MY PROBLEM*
I have a German keyboard on my PowerBook, yet dictate in US English. When I dictated into SpeakPad under Tiger, all characters appeared correctly. However, when I dictated into Microsoft Word using Tiger, I had to switch the keyboard mapping from German to US to get all characters (that means including the characters that are located at different positions on a German keyboard than they are on a US keyboard such as y, z, apostrophes and parentheses) to appear correctly.
Under Leopard, things have changed. Now it doesn't matter whether I dictate into SpeakPad or Word; the results are the same and many characters do not appear correctly.
If set to a German keyboard, y and z appear as expected. To name a few irregularities:
"(" appears as ")"
")" appears as "="
apostrophes appear as "#" and
";" appears as ","
If set to a US keyboard, y and z are interchanged. "(" and ")" appear as expected. Apostrophes appear as "\" and ";" appears as ","
By comparison, if typed (as opposed to dictated, as in the examples above) "correctly" (i.e. based on the letters printed on the keyboard) on a German keyboard set to imitate a US keyboard:
y and z are interchanged
apostrophes appear as "|"
"(" appears as "*"
")" appears as "(" and
";" appears as the symbol for "less than"
Since I don't have a US keyboard, I can't say how it would behave if set to imitate a German keyboard, i.e. if there's a correlation to the results I get when I dictate.
Since I was previously able to dictate correctly into SpeakPad by setting the keyboard to "German" and into Word by setting the keyboard to "US," I presume that this is a problem in Leopard, not ViaVoice.
*OTHER PROBLEMS WITH VIAVOICE UNDER LEOPARD*
In addition to the aforementioned key mapping problems (that may be specific to those of us with foreign keyboards), ViaVoice appears to have lost considerable functionality in Leopard. I cannot access SpeakPad's Preferences and the correction window. Moreover, the traffic-light like window buttons have disappeared from the VoiceCenter (although they work if you click where they should be). SetupAssistent appears to function.
I've written to Nuance about these problems, but have little hope that they will invest the time in producing a patch since they haven't released any updates since 2003.Thrums1,
I've never had to "register" ViaVoice after updating the system. I thus suspect you haven't fully followed my above, three-step advice (particularly step 3).
1) Reinstall ViaVoice from CD.
2) Update to the latest version (using the patch downloadable from Nuance's website).
3) Replace the “temp” and “users” folders (in the "ViaVoice" folder at the upper level of your home directory) by a previous copy thereof. When I say previous copy, I mean a copy from when ViaVoice was still working properly, e.g. a copy from when it was running under Tiger.
As I said, I've gotten ViaVoice to survive several system updates by following the above steps. To my knowledge, the last step is critical since it saves you from having to reconfigure ViaVoice under the new operating system (in this case Leopard). I suspect that ViaVoice is crashing on your system because it's trying to start some module of the SetUpAssistant that is incompatible with Leopard (as many are). If you instead use old copies of the "temp" and "users" folders (from the previous system), then ViaVoice doesn't have to go through the initial "registration" process; ViaVoice doesn't need the SetUpAssistant; and all is (more or less) fine.

BTW, to my knowledge, Dictate only runs on Intel Macs. It thus won't run on a G4 iBook, just as it won't run on my PowerBook G4. -
