Problems with my External HDD. Loosing space?

I am new to Mac.
I just bought a new iMac, and a 2 TB WD My Passport external HDD where I am backing up all my files collected from previous works done under Windows.
In the 2 TB HDD I have created 3 folders: one has 546 GB, another has 200 GB, and the third 0,2 GB (200 MB).
So the total should be something like 800 GB, and therefore the available space in the HDD should be in the range of 1,2 TB.
But when I look in Properties, it tells me that the Used space is 1,3 TB, and that the Available Space is 0,7 TB.
How can this be?
I have looked into another articles and all of them say that I should not have to Defrag (I had that doubt because I copied info into the HDD and then I deleted it, and so it could be marked as used).
So, if that is not the case, what can be happening?
What should I do to recover the rest of the space?
Thanks

  • Problem with USB/External-HDD/etc... not writing?

    Hello...
Recently I've been having a problem with my USB, and external harddrive. It seems that for some reason when I copy files to the device, they do not write. If I go and view the device contents on another PC, my files aren't there, but on this PC they are.
The only way that they will copy is if I right click and select "Safely Remove Drive."
I never used to have to do this; Is there a way to make files auto write?
    Thanks in advance,
    Stephen

Hi, you need to use -sync mount option.

  • Problems with seagate external hdd

I have a Seagate 3TB external HDD attached to my iMac via a Firewire 800 cable. I have the latest software running (Yosemite 10.10.3) but the Mac no longer shows the HDD in finder, I can see it in disk utility but when i come to verify or repair the disk i get this message
" Error: Partition map check failed because no slices were found" I also get this message:

The drive is nearly full and I really don't want to lose any files, can anyone help please..

    Hi Brian
Connect the External HD directly up to one of the iMac's and follow the Formatting and Partitioning instructions in Ken's article: (but note that doing so will erase the data on the drive)

  • Problems with 1TB external HDD

I have two external HDD, one a LaCie 2TB and one a Maxtor Basics 1.5TB. Both devices come formatted as FAT32. I have tried reformatting using Disk Utility to Mac OS Extended but the process fails on both devices, whichever of my iMac I use. The only thing I can then do is re-partition them as FAT32 again.
Equally frustrating, the devices are not visible when I try to access them from other machines on the network whereas other drives connected to the same machine are fully visible.
Is there a size limit for formatting using Mac OS Extended or something?
Any suggestions of how I might at least get them visible for sharing across the network - even if they have to stay as FAT32 drives?

  • Format/cross-compatibility problems with Seagate External HDD

I recently bought a MacBook Pro (July 08) and as soon as I took it out of the box and set it up, went to plug in my little 120GB Seagate HDD to dump the files onto my new Mac, and received the query "Do you wish to format HDD?" Of course I clicked 'NO', and ejected the drive from the Mac. I went to plug it back into my old PC (where it had worked moments before) and received the same query as on the Mac, plus, when I went into properties, found that the drive was no longer FAT32 but RAW. I now find myself at wit's end trying to rescue the 4 years' of data on the drive. I have tried running disk utility on Mac where it can see it still as FAT32, but can't mount it or repair it, and it's still in RAW format when connected to PCs. Anybody out there with some ideas?
    Thanks!

I'm not a hardware expert, but Seagate had a major HD firmware issue earlier this year:

Java 6 you can't as Apple maintains it, and Java 7 you could if you uninstall it and Oracle provides the earlier version which they likely won't his last update fixed 37 remote exploits.
Java broken some software here and there, all you'll have to do is wait for a update from the other parties.

  • Problem with 2 External Drives on my new iMac

I am having a problem when I daisy-chain a second external HD to my first external HD connected to my new iMac. This is the second external HD I've tried this with, with similar problems arising.
My setup: OS 10.5.6. First external HD: G-Tech Q 1TB; 2nd External HD: also a G-Tech Q 1TB (the first time I was daisy-chaining a LaCie 250GB drive to my first external drive).
Problem: when my second external HD is daisy-chained to the first external HD my system starts to go wonky. I can't force quit apps for one. My system hangs. On reboot I don't get past the blue screen. If I remove the daisy-chain all is fine.
I initially had this problem with another external HD I tried to daisy-chain to the first. Same issue.
I was trying to partition the second external using Disk Utility. When I hit the Partition button, Disk Utility just hung with the beach ball.
When I attached a second external the first time I tried to do this all sorts of havoc ensued. A lot of apps were hanging and I couldn't Force Quit them. The whole system seemed to go wonky.
Can anyone tell me what might be happening here?

I've been doing a bit of research on these boards about daisy-chaining problems and am reading that sometimes daisy-chaining can overwhelm the Firewire bus and even corrupt data. This is what I had experienced the first time I tried to daisy-chain. Someone recommended a powered Firewire repeater (like this: http://tinyurl.com/kl84n5) would be a better solution.
Given I've got only 1 Firewire port on my iMac, what do you think?

I am trying to get an answer to whether or not I can successfuly use Time Machine with an external HDD connected to an airport extreme.  Some forums say yes, some say no.  I'm also curious about formatting the hard drive to work both on my wife's MacBook Pro and my PC.  Any help would definitely be appreciated.

You may be going on a recollection, that I share, that at one time Apple stated this would be possible:
In fact, Apple’s Time Machine Web page touted this very capability as recently as last Tuesday, as you can see from Google’s October 16 cache of the page
Effortless meets wireless. With a hard disk connected to your AirPort Extreme Base Station, all the Macs in your house can use Time Machine to back up wirelessly. Simply select your AirPort Disk as the backup disk for each computer and the whole family can enjoy the benefits of Time Machine.
But if you look at the current Time Machine page on Apple’s Web site, that text is nowhere to be found.
That was a long time ago, it has never been officially implemented, and at present they specifically say it cannot be done.
In summary, it may work, but probably won't, and even if it does it may not be reliable.

I have a problem with the external sound of my iPod, when I take the headphones the music keeps playing and the ipod recognizes still have a headset connected. how do I get external sound out?

    - Try insering and removing the headphone plug a dozen times or so.
    - Try cleaning out the headphone jack in the iPod.
    - Resett he iPod. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restoe to factory defaults/new iPod
If yu still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem, likely a bad headphone jack. Yu can make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store to confirm.

  • Urgent question very Strange problem with an external HD on mac PRO

    Hi,
I have a problem with a external HD on my mac pro.
After many month of regular use with out any problem today when I turned on the HD I could not see it in the finder anymore.
I use this HD for backup of an other external HD and to do the back up I use an application called SYN SYNC
    The strange things are:
    1) If I start Sync Sync everything works properly as if the sofware recognize with out problem that the HD is effectively there.
    2) If I open DISK UTILITY I can see the HD and if I try to repair it the utility after 2 minutes says that everything is ok.
    3) If I look for the mac pro (to which the external HD incriminated is connected) on a different mac in my studio over the net I can see the external HD and I can browse the folder, copy items from the esternal HD to the MAC and even copy thing on the external HD.
I tried to connect directly via Fire wire 800 the HD on a different MAC and I could not see it like on the mac pro.
Does enyone have an idea of what's going on?
    best regards
    Lorenzo

I can still see all the others external Hd with out any problem and I already try this but no results I can't see that HD on the desktop and neither in the sidebar.
As I said the strange thing is that the external HD shows the same behaviour when is connected to a different MAC.
Seams the problem is with the HD not with the MAC.
I even try to use a different case for the HD using also USB connection instead of FW, but nothing change!

  • Problems with iomega External Hard Drive on MacBook Air

    Hi community!
I'm experiencing some problems with my MacBook Air and an external hard drive and I'm wondering if anybody would be able to help me out.
I own a MacBook Air running Mac OS X 10.7.3. When I connect my iomega 500GB external hard drive, the Finder is able to pick it up, but when I click on the drive name, it spins forever without the Finder responding for a long time (it basically crashes the Finder with a spinning ball staying forever). The light on the external hard drive flashes intermittently when I first plug it in, but after that stays constantly lit. So I guess the disk has power, but something else is wrong with it.
It was working fine earlier today but I accidentally pulled the cable out while the disk was working. I'm hoping this hasn't permanently damaged my drive.
Any help on what I could do to fix this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    SV

You might try launching Disk Utility, and then select the drive in question to run a "Verify disk" on the drive. This may indicate any errors in the file system of the drive that might be preventing the successful reading of the disk.
If the disk is empty, you may want to re-partition and reformat, so as to start with a "clean slate".

  • Hi, can someone help me with my External HDD??? Please

Hi, Can someone help me with my Extenal HDD???
    Please

After you have all of the files from the External HDD you want to save, to format the HDD:
    Open Launchpad
    Open Utilities
    Open Disk Utility
Select Hard Drive to format (the external HDD)
If you want to change partition size or number select Partition Table
Select number of partitions and adjust sizes if more than one
    Name the partitions
Select the format from the pop-up menu (use Mac OS Extended (Journaled))
If it is not already selected, select GUID Partition Table
    Click OK
    Click Apply
And it should do the formatting for you.
Note: giving a name may come after the format selection, I sometimes get that out of order but it will lead you through the process.

  • Problems with an external monitor

I have a laptop with intel 945 grafic card and I also use an external monitor (which has a nicer panel).
However I experience some strange problems with my setup:
I usually (when I am at home) start my laptop and close the laptop screen via

display goes to sleep when colsed because there is a magnetic switch - small magnet opens the circuit.
if it stays on, either magnet was misplaced, some wire disconnected or the issue is with the switch circuit.
on some models switch is part of trackpad, if you have small magnet, try moving it over trackpad, see what it does.

  • Problem with restoring my HDD from .dmg image

    Hello,
I encountered a problem with boot camp which couln't make a new partition for windows, because it couldn't move some files. It was a problem of defragmentation which i found surprisingly hard to solve. I'm a new mac user, and i was unable to find any defragmentation utility. Even the boot camp ask me to make and image of HDD, reformat it, and then restore from image. It was quite easy when i was reading it but after all i end up with new instalation of MacOS X without access to my files stored on HDD image.
    Here's what i did:
    1. I made images of HDD and and partition. To make images smaller i previously copied all of my multimedia files to PC. Images were created as read only, not compressed. They were stored on PC
    2. I have used disc utility after booting up from MacOS X CD, and made a new partition. It's name is the same as the one i made image from.
    3. Now it's the point when i should restore my partition from image but i encountered some problems. I copied images to mac again and was trying to restore partition from it but disc utility said it doesn't have any checksums or something like that. I read that it was a problem of verifying image with disc utility (the first button on the upper left side called verify.) It have checked image and made checksums but i still was unable to restore partition from it.
Now, i know it might be silly to try restore HD from image on the same HD but shouldn't it shows some oder errors? After booting up from CD i can't connect to PC to browse it's resources and writing address (http://pcname/folder/partition.dmg) in source line in restore tab does not do anything.
Is the only solution to connect a firewire hard drive to my mac with images on it? Or it is a problem with my images (making image process didn't showed any errors with HDD image and partition image).
Moreover i cant access those images on my MBP cos it's says that there are no mountable file system. Does it means that this image is bad?
Please help, I'm running out of options as i don't have firewire HDD and i'm really annoyed cos things like defragmentation are so easy on Windows and i don't get it why it's must be so complicated on Mac
    Sincerely
    PS sorry for my english
