Problems with Nested Styles

I'm trying to create a nested style in In Copy CS5. What I want for it to do is to create the first few words with a certain character style then revert back to the Paragraph style setting. I have the nested style set to end with the end nested style here special character but it seems to stay in the format of the nested style no matter what I do.
Any suggestions?

What I did is create a new document which comes in with a certain paragraph style by default (a certain font and regular type). When I created a nested style using a character style in the Paragraph style we normally use it did not seem to be working correctly. I would have to apply the same style from the paragraph styles menu for the nested style to apply correctly. Otherwise it would apply the nested style to the whole paragraph instead of ending after three words.
Either way after fiddling around with it for awhile and closing and restarting InCopy a few times it appears to be working correctly.Whichj brings me to another question, do you have to restart InCopy for changes to take effect?

Having a problem with character styles in indesign

I'm having another problem with my style sheets in indesign, I've now got an awful lot of styles in paragraph and character styles. I've created different styles for paragraph justified text and when I go to my style in paragraph styles to use tight text copy, character styles always overides it so it means I have to do whole lot of extra formatting just to put it right. Does anyone have an idea how I can stop character styles overiding paragraph styles? Thanks very much.

Perhaps your character styles apply more than you actually want? I.e., rather than just "+Italic" it also applies custom tracking. You should use character styles only to override the stuff you really want to change.
You can check by calling up the definition for those character styles; the huge "Style Settings" text box lists all the attributes it changes.

Problems with a style sheet in InDesign CS3

Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone had any clue as to what the holy heck is happening to me.
I am attempting to standardize our documents and use style sheets--hey, what a concept, right? So I'm going through a recently completed document and grabbing text and using that to create paragraph style sheets and character based style sheets.
With one paragraph style sheet, the text is set to Janson Text Lt Stnd 55 Roman. However, when you apply the style sheet to a paragraph, the first word sets to a missing font. The rest of the paragraph is OK. It's only the first word. The paragraph style sheet does not have a "+" next to it. Highlighting the individual word and reapplying the paragraph style sheet does not change this.
I went to the character style palette, thinking that there was an override. Nope, the character style was set to "None." I clicked on "Override" to apply the paragraph style, and again, the first word is stubbornly refusing to change.
What gives? I am stumped!

Styles based on Basic paragraph are a nightmare because every document starts with a basic paragraph style, and there's no guarantee that it will be the same from document to document. When you import styles based on Basic Paragraph from some other document, different attributes will be overridden depending on what is the same, and what is different.
The best way to deal with this is to either import the basic paragraph stle along with everything else, or put all the docs in one book file and pick one to use as the master, then synchronize the styles.
It sounds like your first word problem could be an applied character style, though, or less likely, a nested style.

Problem with CSS styles and Previewing in Firefox

Hello,
I recently rebooted my Mac OS X system (leopard) and reinstalled Adobe CS3. Before this I had virtually no problems with Dreamweaver and everything was running smoothly. However, now whenever I preview my pages in Safari, the CSS code is completely mangled.
Also, my site won't preview in Firefox unless I close any existing tabs and exit Firefox completely. I have no idea why these problems are occurring, but I have pasted the code below so any advice would be extemely helpful.

as for the css, i do have a screenshot of what's happening. the background image seems to repeat after the navigation bar instead of keeping the transparent background. it's extremely odd and i've never seen it before. it can be seen in the attached photo.

Strange problem with Zen Style 300

I got a Zen Style 300 for my birthday and it is given me some problems. I tried looking at this forum and on google, but so far haven't found anything like it. What happens is that during the sync process, some folders on my portable harddisk (which is where the music is located) get renamed into names with strange symbols and become unreadable. The strange thing is that it doesn't happen with all files and just as strange is that it does happen with files not related to the sync that are located in a completely different folder. You can imagine I got quite scared the first time, afraid of having lost my music collection, but on restart everything was fine again. Until I plugged in the ZEN again that is.
My second problem is probably related to it. Part of the files transfered to the player don't show up when I try to listen to them with the player. When I check they have been copied to the player correctly, yet somehow they don't show up.
I have Windows XP and tried syncing with the standard Creative software, MediaMonkey and iTunes but they all face the same problem. Although with the second problem it might happen that files copied one way don't show up, while the same files transfered with a different program do. All 3 cause the problem with my harddisk. I tried formatting the player and updating it. So anyone has any idea what might cause this?

I have a similar problem. It recognized and paired with a Sony Ericsson MW600 Hi-Fi Bluetooth Stereo Headset once. I lost connection, could no longer connect, and tried to re-pair it. Now it recognizes the the headset's name (MW600), but when you try to pair with it stays on a "Please wait..." message. It will stay that way forever until I press the back (left) arrow. Then the message says "Remote Device not responding" and pairing fails. This MW600 headset pairs with other devices (cell phone, PC) just fine, though, so it's not malfunctioning.
I suspect this might be a Bluetooth version compatibility issue? I say that because when I connect to a Jawbone Era (pretty new device, probably latest Bluetooth spec), everything goes fine.
Also, if I clear all devices, then try to pair to just the Sony Ericsson MW600, I can get the M300 in a state where it hangs and will not respond to anything. I then have to press the reset button using a paperclip to start over.

Problem with ZEN Style M300

When I trying to found bluetooth audio devices with ZEN Style M300,? the player get to freeze after a little bit time that is searching devices, and so I have to push the reset button for using again the player. :mansurprised:Anyone have the same problem?

Problem with Next Style in Paragraph Style

The "Next Style" function is not working for me anymore! As an example, when I make a subhead with a first paragraph specified as the Next Style, the specification for that paragraph does not take effect upon specifying the subhead in the previous paragraph. Anybody else having this problem, or am I just losing it, which is entirely possible! Thanks. DL

Are you expecting it as some kind of dinamic tool?
As far as I know it works in at least 2 situations.
1. If you are typing text with paraStyle, defined with filled "Next Style" field, and you press "Enter" ==> next para will be formatted (during typing) with "Next Style".
2. If your textFrame is set by ObjectStyle, and its textFrame.paragraphStyle property is choosen, and "next Style" checkbox is checked
==> you can build a logic chain of paraStyles which will be automatically applied to textFrame contents, when placed into.

Strange problem with nested address book groups

I have a strange problem with iSync. I have created a group On-the-Go in my Address Book that I'm syncing with my phone (Motorola v600). The group consists of three other groups. Let's call them A, B and C.
The problem is that only group C gets synchronized. Contacts from groups A and B disappear from the phone. Strangely, if I select A or B to sync in iSync - they get synchronized just fine. Also, group C, in turn, contains other nested groups, but that does not seem to be a problem.
I played with group names, tried to recreate group A to no avail.
For now, I have added all contacts from A and B to On-the-Go as a workaround, but
it looks like a bug to me.

Problem with Nested tell blocks in Applescript

Hello everyone,
I've been trying to do a little Applescript, whose purpose is to open a file selector to let the user choose a bunch of images, then prompt him to ask a resizing ratio, and then resize the chosen pictures accordingly (after duplicating the originals in a folder on the desktop, the copied files being the ones resized).
I'm having problems with the resizing part... Here is the code I've come up with so far... "Image traitées" is the name of the new folder created on the desktop, and "compression" is the factor in %.

Your tell statements are OK, although when nesting them you do need to keep track of what application is getting targeted in any given statement (to avoid terminology conflicts).
Each application refers to its objects in its own way - unfortunately, not everything knows about Finder references. Your photo variable contains a Finder reference (e.g. "file x of folder y of disk z"), but Image Events doesn't know what that is. The solution is to convert the Finder reference to something more standard, such as text or an alias.
Your script won't work with just that change, however. Image Events works with the image contained in a file, so you also need to actually get that image, for example:
set compression to 80 -- used in the following snippet
tell application "Image Events" to launch -- just need to do this once
tell application "Finder"
     repeat with photo in folder "Images traitées" of desktop
          tell application "Image Events"

Massive problems with nested multi-cam sequences

Hey all,
I'm absolutely pulling my hair out over some issues I'm having and hope somebody out there might have an answer. I'm creating a short interview project, including interviews of two people individually, with two separate cameras and external sound capture. My goal is to cut between their separate answers to each question. For each interview I created a multi-cam sequence within its own timeline. Then, in my master sequence, I used the source monitor to pull out the specific clips from each interview sequence which I wanted to include, and assembled them into the master timeline.
I'm having two difficulties. First, for whatever reason, I'm experiencing audio glitching when the cuts between sequence clips occur. The glitch is like an audio "scramble," lasts about a half second, plenty of time to be distracting and detract from the whole of the project. There are no such audio glitches present when viewing the interview sequences specifically. I had applied effects to the audio tracks both within the interview sequences and the master sequence. I've since disabled every effect but the problem persists, and it is still present upon rendering the master timeline. I have absolutely no idea what to do about this.
The second issue is more general. I've got my media cache on an internal SSD, and I'm pulling my media from an internal HDD, with Premiere Installed on a different SSD with my operating system. The two interview sequences play back wonderfully, no delays whatsoever. The master timeline, however, with all the clips extracted from the interview sequences, plays slow as molasses. It takes 10-15 seconds for the play head to even start moving once I click 'play', which has made this entire process excruciatingly difficult. Is this a known issue? Why would my performance be so completely degraded working with nested sequences? Isn't everything referencing the exact same files?
Ugh, long night working on this. Thank you for any help.

Well, I've come up with a terrible, but comical solution for the second issue which doesn't involve reworking anything. It turns out that, upon launching premiere, I can play the master sequence with nested multi-cam sequences a grand total of ONCE with minimal delay. If I stop the play through, then it will take 3-4 minutes to get the sequence playing again. Of course, the Premiere decides to hang when I try to close it after playing this master timeline, so I'm finding that I can inch my way through this project by (1) launching premiere, (2) playing the master sequence, (3) make the edits I need, (4) forcibly crash Premiere, and (5) relaunch Premiere and repeat. It's a terrible way to work, but the project is so close to completion that I'm willing to suffer through it.
As to issue 1, I've taken each offending clip, extending the audio track one or two frames in the beginning of each clip, and then use those frames to ramp the volume up from silent to 0db. This seems to avoid the brief moment of distortion at the beginning. Notably I did try your suggestion by going back to the original, source audio, but I was still getting the same issue. My work-around is the only solution I've been able to come up with.

Problem with document style webservice

I have written a webservice with the style = document and the protocol = https. I am getting xml passed in correctly, but when I return xml from the webservice it has been encoded, i.e. "<" becomes "<". Additionally the xml header (<?xml versionn....)is not being returned.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Hi Andy,
Sounds like the XML is being converted into a string. Try the example
using a org.w3c.dom.Element [1] or send the XML as an attachment [2].

Problem with Css styles not showing in live view or when i browse

I am using Mac osx 10.6 and building website with Dreamweaver CS5. Sometimes div tags i create not showing styles or rendering in live view or when I browse but showing in design view. I looked in dreamwever faq and they talk about not showing in design view to toggle the display styles. That is not the problem becuase it is check marked and I tried turning off and turning on and made no difference.I am using firefox browser.
It happened before the other day too. But all of my other pages in this site that i have created the same way building with div tags and css styles. So not sure what the problem is. Maybe someone has a suggestion here.

Problem with paragraph style overrides and character formatting

I've had this problem for a long time, and sometimes it resolves itself, sometimes it doesn't. Finally I'm begging for help.
I am typesetting academic articles into a journal. We use endnotes. The endnotes have both italic and regular formatting--italics for book and journal titles, and foreign phrases.
Sometimes when I place the text, the formatting reverts to whatever it was in Word. To try to fix that, I've begun stripping the Word formatting from the original document, making everything "Courier New" and just importing it like that. I figured this would clear a lot of the problems I've had with fiddly formatting issues.
I was mistaken.
Here is what happens:
When I place the document it comes up in the original Courier New font, with italics and other formatting intact. If I click "article style" which is the main article paragraph style format, normally it changes. but if I right click and select "apply article style" it is more likely to change the paragraph to the proper style, with italics and other formatting still intact.
But when it gets to endnotes, I'm sort of screwed.
My endnotes style is a bulletted style, so that I can have the endnote numbers consistent. but this seems to screw all the style formatting.
Here is what I do:
With the cursor in endnote text, I click "bulleted endnote style". The character format remains the same, with a + beside the style. The endnote number format is different, however. If I click "clear overrides" it does in fact change to the proper formatting, but it strips any italics or other character in the text. This is frustrating because many of these endnotes have lots of italicized journal and book titles, and it takes a long time to figure out which ones I need to reitalicize manually.
I have tried to use the "customize style import>Style mapping" but it has not fixed anything.
Please help me figure out how to make these transitions more smoothly. I am open to suggestions both on how to make the changes once the document is placed in the Indesign file, and also making modifications to formats in the native Word file so that I don't have these problems.

Sorry, that last message wasn't supposed to send (if that's not obvious!). I was writing it and got interrupted. Damn iphone.
I know why there are two numbers. This is not an issue. What I didn't finish writing was that, the note number before i bullet it is a different font/ format. Again, not a problem. Here is something interesting, though. If I delete that original number by placing the cursor in the middle of it (say a between the 4 and 2 of 42) then delete everything by Shift+arrow forward, press delete then delete the rest of the unnecessary characters, THEN apply the style formatting, it works just fine. Is it something to do with the character codes of those original note numbers?
Word drops in so many hidden codes that it screws everything up!

Problem with nesting repetitive groups, using PDF as template

We are trying to use a pdf file (Acrobat 5.0) as a template for BI Publisher reports.
Our report uses as a data source a xml file (facturas.xml) with data from several bills.
In each bill, there are areas where multiple lines must be displayed. We use the tag BODY_START/BODY_END to define the area of repetition for the lines.
The problem arises when we want to nest two or more BODY_START/BODY_END. In this case the fields are displayed outside the place where they were defined.
We do not know the way to do it and the syntax for nesting repetitive groups.
BI Publisher Version: Oracle BI Publisher 10.1.3.4.1
Plattform: Windows 2003 R2 64 bits.
Acrobat: Using Acrobat 5.0 file format.
Editor: Adobe Acrobat 9, saving as 5.0 file format.

Problem with Smartform style

Hi all,
I created a smartform for barcode labels printing. The form has its own style and characters and paragraphs use a
custom font (it's a Windows font I uploaded in the system).
My smartform worked well, but when I newly tested it yesterday, only the barcode and a field were displayed.
The only difference I noticed is the fact I deleted some custom fonts of mine and, after the deletion, I don't
tested anymore the smartform until yesterday. In fact if i try to print the fields without any custom style, they
are displayed in the preview.

Problem solved (in a strange way): I had to modify my style by setting the black color for all the paragraphs and characters.
Usually the color should be black by default, don't you think?
I have to clarify that in my style there's a paragraph with the white color to give a light and shade effect: I don't know if this could be the cause of my problem.
