Problems with Norton antivirus after Tiger install

I installed Tiger yesterday and it all went well. After the install however, on every restart or when turning on the computer I get this error message:
Norton AntiVirus Error. Norton AntiVirus Auto Protect could not continue. Please reinstall Norton AntiVirus and restart.
Of course, I did the reinstall for Norton but continue to get the error message. Any assistance is appreciated.

There's no question that the exploit is serious, but it is a very narrow exploit, only involves specially-crafted RAR files, and there's both a completely adequate workaround and a virus definition to flag potentially compromised RAR files.
Given that, there's no reason to uninstall NAV: simply implement the workaround, download the latest virus defs, and stay away from RAR files for a bit. I expect we'll see a patch shortly.
The hysteria that this problem has generated from some, as well as some of the responses — uninstall NAV, throw out NAV, etc. — is wholly unfounded given the workaround and available virus def.
There have been Mac OS X exploits announced for which an Apple-provide fix took a couple of days to publish. Given the response to this Symantec issue, I'm surprised some didn't advocate uninstalling Mac OS X at those times.
As you point out, there are those who exchange documents with Windows systems, employ macro-enabled documents, etc. Uninstalling NAV vs. using the available workaround opens them up to a wider range of threats. Doing so simply makes no sense — i.e. is "nonsense" in the dictionary definition sense of that word — given that the available workaround and virus definition address the RAR exploit until a patch is published. That's not disparaging: that's fact.
Why waste the time or expose one's self to other potential threats when the workaround and virus def are available and the patch is forthcoming? Uninstalling NAV vs. using the available workaround and virus definition is "throwing out the baby with the bath water."
The Symantec-bashing that has transpired in a variety of threads since this problem arose is also unwarranted. NAV is a good product. I've used it for years and recommend it. I have no financial relationship with Symantec: I simply like the product, use it, and I recommend what I use.
ClamXav and the underlying ClamAV engine are also good products and I recommend ClamXav for those who can't afford NAV or prefer an open source product. But the ClamAV engine has also had similar exploits found in its code, so it also has an imperfect track record.
As software complexity increases, finding all of the potential exploits in the design or testing phase is increasingly difficult. All software installations are a matter of trust as to if the developers did the best job they could to ensure a product free of defects, including security exposures.
Good luck!

  • Still having problems with insufficeint permissions - after clean install

I'm seeing this on multiple friends' computers, and now have it on mine.
An auto update fails with the error of insufficient permissions.  (I can't find how to post a screen shot of it.)
I read through several discussions, and ran the manual uninstaller, then checked for the files as denoted on the FAQ, and tried to run the installer after downloading it and still cannot get Flash Player installed due to insufficient permissions writing the files.
I am on Windows 7 64 bit(current patch level), IE(9.0.14), and have d/l the latest Adobe Flash Installer.
I know that at least 1 of my friends is on Windows 7 32 bit, IE, and whatever the latest Adobe Flash update is trying to install.
I am running on an Administer account while trying this.
When I was first asked for help I checked and know that my friend's account was Administration as well.  Last month I reran the flash installation file and used the "Run as Administrator" option from an administration account and the installed worked.  That did not fix the issue this time.  As stated above I have it on my system now and some other friends have it on theirs as well.
How can I fix the issue?  How can I make sure it doesn't come back when the next auto audate takes place?
    Edit addition:
An auto update kicked off and it failed too.  Here is the log at this point:

  • Problems with Icons flashing after Maverick Install

Just installed Mavericks--now my icons flash randomly and repeatedly as if the desktop keeps reloading.  Imessage (AIM) crashed today as well.  Anyone else having this issue or could suggest a fix?  I have applecare and I will call them if needed but if it's something simple like deleting a plist, I would rather avoid a prolonged phone call.  I did run disk utlity and fixed the permissions, don't see anything unusual running on the activity monitor (though I'm not so familiar with what should be).  Thanks in advance for your help!

Do you have Google Drive installed? Other users have reported the same behavior and found that uninstalling Google Drive resolves it. Presumably they are working on a fix.
Other users have found that disabling App Nap for Google Drive resolves it. Do this by selecting the Google Drive application in a Finder window, and Get Info for it (File menu > Get Info.) Next under General make sure the Prevent App Nap checkbox is checked.
    Best of luck.

  • Problems with Iphone 3G after OS4 install...

Was super excited about the OS4 release, so I updated iTunes, and installed OS4 to my iphone. Since the backup was taking forever (6hrs), I just left it overnight. This morning when I picked it up, there was a message on my computer screen that an error occurred. I took the iphone, and see that the system now says 4, and I have the camera app, but not the multi-tasking function.
Any thoughts on what is going on? How can I fix it?

when trying to install os4 on my ihpone 3G, the back up sticks at about 10%, stays like that for hours & eventually i give up & turn it off, if i back up normally, it takes about 20mins.

  • How do I remove Norton Antivirus *after* I have installed Lion?

How do I remove Norton Antivirus *after* I have installed Lion?
The Norton uninstaller is a PPC native app and Lion won't run it.
    Thanks.

You should run the removal applicaiton that came with your installation. Read this from the Norton web site..https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?product=No rton+for+Mac+Products&version=current&lg=english&ct=united+states&pvid=f-mac&doc id=v64924250_EndUserProfile_en_us/
Norton AV 12 for Lion is available online.
If you want an AV program compatible with Lion then look at Intego Virus Barrier 6.

OS X Yosemite v10.10.3 Update - I had problems with my iMac after installing the previous update and I removed that update.  Have there been problems associated with this update ?

I've been using it on all of my computer without any problems. Remember you won't see any positive comments here. Everyone here is complaining about a problem. If you want a good experience with any upgrade or update first make a backup from which you can boot the computer. If you are installing an update, like 10.10.3 for example, always download and install the Combo Updater - OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Combo Update. Before you install any update or upgrade over an existing system you should do this:Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • If you have problems with Apple Apps after installing Mavericks

I had a problem with Apple Apps after installing Mavericks. They would bounce in the dock but never open.  The problem apps I had trouble with were CALENDAR, MAIL, and even APP STORE.   I am guessing it has to do with permissions when setting up via iCloud.  Here's what I did to make my apps work again after the update:
Restart computer, then immediately hold down OPTION so you can start from the 10.9 RECOVERY DISK.
Run DISK UTILITY, then run REPAIR DISK, then run REPAIR DISK PERMISIONS.
After this, RESTART, then hold COMMAND OPTION P R at the same time until your computer restarts three times.
After it boots up, the apps began working like they should have.

That's where your questions about Lion should be posted.

The latest flash player release is 11,0,1,152.
Can you upgrade to this version and see whether the crash stil exists?
Go to get.adobe.com/flashplayer to download and install flash player.
In case you need direct link to installer/uninstaller, please go to http://forums.adobe.com/message/3952360#3952360 to find them.

My computer crashes repeatedly and I get the message pages are not responding do you want to stop, and/or shockwave is not responding do you want to stop. I have Windows XP Service Pack 3, I am having the same issues whether I use Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox. My HP Pavilion Desktop has 504 MB of Ram and I am using high speed internet connection. Because it was crashing so much, I used the uninstall program for Flash player to uninstall Flash, I checked my registry and removed anything I saw that was Flash. I then uninstalled Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, then I reinstalled the most recent versions from their websites. I did the same for FlashPlayer and Shockwave Flash. I went to the Adobe website and had them check to see if it was working and it shows I have FlashPlayer 10.3.181.36. The page that shows  which version of flash player goes with Windows XP states that I should have 10.3.181.34 (This is what I thought I had before I updated, I was having the same problems). When I went into my computer to see what version I have, it shows 11.5.9.620 Activex and both Flash Player and Flash Player Object is listed as 10.3.181.34. My firewall for Windows is set to medium. I also am running Norton Internet Security. It takes anywhere from 3-6minutes for some of my games to load, and I have to refresh at least 3-4 times in order to play. When I do start to play it freezes frequently and I use escape to free it up. This has been going on for a month. I have no idea what to do. I am not very computer savy and I have been learning as I go.

  • Has anyone had a problem with CS3 crashing after downloading OS 10.8.1 on a imac?

Has anyone had a problem with CS3 crashing after downloading OS 10.8.1 on a imac?

    Peggy
You are probably correct. I tried all different variations to test it. As long as I quit each document separately, i.e., red dot it, I seem to bring up only one document after that whether I click on the document itself or open it within pages. The same is true with numbers.
    Two more questions:
    1) can you turn off the "resume" feature? If so, how? I could not find a way to do it.
    2) why the "save a version" feature in pages? What happened to the old "save" and "save as" features?
Thanks so much, you saved me a lot of frustration but I am still going to install MS Office for Mac.

  • Skype problem with Norton

Dear All, Kindly be informed that I bought new Lap Top with "Norton" antivirus and I can't access my Skype account since that day although I can access it with the same username and password on my old PC. I gave it permission through "Norton" but it doesn't work, so please advice.

I had the same problem.  I told Norton to add another firewall rule and navigated to the Skype Updater file.  As soon as I told Norton to allow that file my Skype logged on fine.

  • Problems with IMAQ Vision after upgrading from Labview 6i to Labview 6.1

    Hi,
We just upgraded from Labview 6i to 6.1.To do this,we uninstalled the 6i version as was suggested by NI and then installed the 6.1 version.Later when we tried to run the old vi's written using Imaq vision, we ran into different problems.Has anyone experienced any similar problems with IMaq vision after upgrading? If so please help me solve this issue.
    Thanx
    deepak

    What kind of problems?
I would strongly suggest that you uninstall IMAQ (all elements) and reinstall them. They register with Windows, probably docked to 6i, and also must be recompiled, which I believe is done in installation.
    This is your best bet.
If you still have problems, contact NI and ni.com/ask and start a support inquiry.

  • Reception / Battery problems with iPhone 3GS after upgrading to iOS 4.2.1

There are major reception and battery problems with iPhone 3GS after upgrading to iOS 4.2.1.
I can not believe that Apple did not test this for major bugs like this one is.
I am a business user and can not effort to have bad reception. Apple wants to gain in the business clients... I never had this with my former BlackBerrys!
I need a reliable phone not a play thing like this is right now, it just needs it to work propely. And if a major bug like this comes along, fix it immediately. After the iPhone4 story, now this...incredible! Going back to my reliable BlackBerry! It just ain't reliable and takes forever to fix a problem.

I have the same issue after iOS 4.2.1 update. I am using iPhone 3GS officially unlocked by Apple. I tried using different SIM cards and both carriers show same problem when using phone in 3G mode. Phone falls back to EDGE mode showing 'E' from '3G' at start. I have reset the phone and rebooted several times and moved to different cell areas in the city just to verify the problem.
I had no such issues earlier. I also have Nokia E71 which shows full signal and has no such issues.
I have posted the bug on apple iphone feedback page. I hope they Apple will fix the problem and test the release properly on all models before releasing to public.
