Problems with OS X Tiger 10.4 & Classic

I had to install OS X Tiger 10.4 on a G4 because my old system crashed. I zeroed out the drive and did a first time install. Everything installed properly except I no longer have classic and have been trying to install it. I have the white 9.1 classic CD's along with updates but I am unable to upgrade because it says classic is not installed. I have tried the software install and restore disc but this does not work. Whenever i try to do an upgrade the following message appears "classic cannot find a Mac OS 9 system folder on the startup disc to use. You may need to install 9.1 or later..." I tried to install 9.1 yet the same message appears. Anyone have suggestions on what I should try next?

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Which PowerMac G4 are you running?
Some versions could only get Mac OS 9 installed from their restore disks or a Mac OS 9.2 CD. In addition, when you zero the drive, if you don't add the Mac OS 9 drivers, you won't be able to install a Mac OS 9 bootable system on those that support it:

  • Performance problems with new Java Tiger style recommendations

Performance problems with jdk 1.5 on Linux plattform
(not tested on Windows, might be the same)
    using the new style recommendations.
I need fast Vector loops for high speed mathematical calculations, some
hints about the fastest way to program that loop would be also great!
After refactoring using the new features from java 1.5 (as recommended from
    SUN) I lost performance significantly:
    using a vector:
    public Vector<unit> units;
The new code (recommended from SUN for Java Tiger for redesign):
    for (unit u: units) u.accumulate();
runs more than 30% slower than the old code:
    for (int i = 0; i < units.size(); i++) units.elementAt(i).accumulate();
    I expected the opposite.
Is there any information available that helps?
The following additional information I got from Mr. Shankar Unni:
I got some fairly anomalous results comparing ArrayList and Vector: for the
1.5-style loops, ArrayList was faster then Vector, but for a loop with get()
calls, Vector was faster. Vector was even faster than that using
    elementAt(), which was a surprise:
For a million summing iterations over a 100-element array:
vector elementAt loop took 3446 ms.
vector get loop took 3796 ms.
vector iterator loop took 5469 ms.
arraylist get loop took 4136 ms.
arraylist iterator loop took 4668 ms.

  • Reformatting/reinstalling problems with iMac and Tiger... Please help!

    Hi!
I've been trying to sell my iMac so that I can fund the purchase of a Macbook. Finally found a buyer, told him I would format the hard drive and re-install Tiger for his convenience (and my security).
I'll try to describe now the problems I have had:
    - I booted from the installer disk 1; opened disk utility; zeroed out the entire drive (the one, in disk utility, on the left-hand drawer w/ the mfgr. # and drive size -- i.e., the MAIN one). This may be where I made my mistake...
    - After this finished, I went back to the installer and began the installation process. Everything seemed to be on track.
    - Disk 1 finished, the computer automatically restarted.
    - Upon restart, I was asked to install the 2nd disk.
    - Here is where I KNOW something (I did probably) went wrong: disk 1 would not eject; instead, I got a spinning beach ball for what seemed to be a long while... TOO long... SO long, in fact, that I manually restarted the computer, hit the eject button, removed disk 1, and inserted disk 2 in the hopes that the installation process would pick up where I left it. Unfortunately, it didn't.
    - The computer will not boot-up from, recognize, or even ask for disk 2, at all. All I get, when trying to boot up from anything but disk 1 is a grey screen, and the flashing folder/"?" icon.
    - I can still access installer and all the utilities when I boot from the installer disk 1. HOWEVER, when I try to run the installer again--trying to begin the process from scratch--the installer fails to locate the target volume! Moreover, when I try to use disk utility, it cannot verify or repair my HD (the main HD or the "My Computer" HD -- if that makes sense, my knowledge of the proper terminology is poor), nor can it erase them again. The reason? The message I get says "Volume failed to unmount," or something along those lines.
    - Under information, I see that these drives are verified (or so the computer says) so I hope real damage hasn't been done, and that I just short-circuited the hardware somewhere along the line.
So -- might anyone have an idea as to how I can get this process back on track? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!! Thank you thank you THANK YOU, in advance!
    Cooper

    Thank you, Kappy and baltwo!
Yes, it is the 17" G5 iMac in my info. and, yes, I am using the (Tiger) disks that came with the iMac.
What I ended up doing was this, and I wonder if you might have any idea if it sounds good or not -- it seems, now, to be working:
    - I entered terminal, and typed: "diskutil unmount /volumes/untitled" in order to force-unmount the volume that seemed to be giving me so much trouble.
    - From there, I partitioned the main HD (extended, etc.), in order to create a new target volume for OSX.
    - This done, I went back to installer, it found the new target volume, and voila! It's begun installing from disk 1 !
I wonder, though, should I have tried to erase that first, unmounted problem volume? I'm not sure how I could have -- it was unselectable from disk-utility once I unmounted it. It seemed that there was information on it -- 6.5GB, it had gone through the entire first-disk of the install process -- but, then again, the main HD showed all 148GB free once I unmounted that volume and created the new partition...
Any further advice you might give?
    Thanks, again!

  • Problem with JPGs after Tiger upgrade

Hi, I normally get answers from this excellent forum by searching, but I can't find anyone who's had the same problem.
I have a Lacie d2 firewire hard drive, which I've had since I was using a G3 iMac running OS9 (gradually updated to the last version). When I bought a shiny new G5 running Panther everything worked fine and all my existing files opened without any problem. Since upgrading to Tiger, however, I now find that some (not all) JPG picture files that I saved on the external drive with OS9 appear as unix executable and can't be opened. To make matters worse, when I open those files that I can (in Preview), if I make any changes and save, the new version gets saved as a unix executable! Also, I've found some heavily edited images where the thumbnail now shows the ORIGINAL (pre edited) version of the picture - even when the edited version came from someone else and I never had the original!!
I've now found that the same thing is happening wih pictures on the memory stick duo that I use in my mobile phone, again only with ones that I dragged there with OS9.
Any ideas on this confusing problem would be very much appreciated.

First question: do the files have the .jpg extension?
Second: is the memory stick formatted as FAT32?
This problem usually crops up because there is a difference in the way OS 9 and OS X store the resource information on a FAT32 volume. Without a resource it can read, and without a .jpg extension, OS X can reach the conclusion that the file in question is a UNIX executable. It should work if you simply add the .jpg extension to the name. When you open and save evidently you are still not getting the extension added to the file name.

  • Problem with moving free trans centerpoint in classic tweens

I still need to use classic tweening once in awhile but I am having an issue I cannot resolve. The classics tweens work fine but if I ever use the free transform tool and move the rotation center out of the actual center (say I want to rotate an arm from the shoulder) -- the tween automatically jumps all over following as if following how I moved the f.transform center. It will not follow the intended motion even though the starting and end positions are correct. Has anyone seen this or have any ideas what I'm doing or not doing?

    Hi Kanika Kohli,
I agree with Mr.Selva. Kindly find more information on this,
    i. For standard movement types, this means that the given process is not supported using the 951 or 952  combination.
ii.  For customer-defined movement types (beginning with 9, X, Y, or Z), this may mean that they have not been fully defined. Delete the movement type and re-create it by copying a standard movement type.
and try to posting with any other movement type which will increase or decrease the value of the goods. In my client, they defined 952 movement as RE for POS sales.
    I hope this helps.
    Thanks & Regards

  • Installation Problems with OS X Tiger

I'm currently running osX ver 10.1.5 i think. ( the nunber of versions are driving me nuts). Right now, i'm trying to install OS X Tiger ver 10.4. I've put in the disc, watch the window appear, clicked on the install icon, the reboot icon appeared, and clicked on it. After the reboot, the same window remains, but no further windows appear. So, i decided to click the icon again, as the same, the reboot button appears, and this time, while rebooting, i pressed the "C" key. After the whole system rebooted, it still remains unchanged.
Could it be my installation disc giving me problems? Or is it my system giving me problems? Currently running 640 MB and a 120GB hard drive.
    Please help...!
    G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

Mine is a Power Mac blue/grey G4. It is no point buying a software that works on some machines and doesn't seem to run on others of almost the same specs. I just tried using the startup disc function to run it off the DVD rom. It apparently also doesn't work. I'm almost to the point of pulling out my hair, please help!

  • Problem with terminal in tiger

    Hi,
Running 10.4.11 on my Powerbook, have used Terminal a couple of times, mostly for the games. Suddenly it won't work-- when I open up Terminal and type "emacs" here is what I get:
dumpemacs: Must be run as root unless -n is used
emacs: child exited with status 1
Typing "emacs -n" doesn't work, either.
I have repaired permissions on my HD, did that make Terminal dysfunctional? I've repaired permissions again after I had this problem but it obviously didn't fix the issue, so I suspect that's totally irrelevant.
Please help me, it is very important I get back to my therapy sessions with Eliza!

Are you using an administrator account? Try this:
    sudo emacs
You'll be asked for an administrator password. Enter it (don't worry about the lack of *s showing up; they're not supposed to), and you should be good to go.
Also, try hand checking the permissions on the emacs executable. In a Finder window, hit Command-Shift-G, type "/usr/bin" (without the quotes) and then scroll to emacs. Select it, and hit Command-I, then check out the permission and make sure it's executable.

  • Problems with TED video podcast in ipod classic 80gb

I have a lot of TED video podcast on my itunes on PC but i can't listen and view it on my ipod, i've red somewhere that video podcast with 46kbps are no longer supported by ipod classic? is that right?
    there are any solutions?
please help me, i'm really interested in it

    Yes, I'm still stuck too.
Some of my TED videos showed up in iTunes under "movies" when I migrated to a new computer; likely iTunes found the native files.  These movies play fine but re-subscribing to the TED video podcast and trying to play them under "podcasts" on my iPod Classic (120 gb), they still won't play (screen goes black for about 1 sec, then it skips to the next podcast...repeat until entire list is done).
I saw someone post about a "convert to iPod", but I can't find that option in iTunes (windows 8, iTunes 11)
    Thoughts?

  • Problem with mac running tiger

So i have a macbook running tiger. i recently bought snow leopard from the apple store.  i checked the requirements and i can download it. when i inserted the cd after about a minute the computer ejected it. not quite sure what to do but would lovvvve help/advise

Hold down the C  key while starting the computer, of course with the disc in the drive.  If it still refuses to read it you likely have a dirty or bad optical drive.  Those notebook models only last a few years.  Report back if the C key doesn't work and we can investigate more.

  • Weird problems with OSX Tiger

I'm with a weird problem with my OS Tiger. I have a G4/400 AGP Graphics with a Fastmac 1.5GHz processor upgrade, 1 GB RAM, 128MB video card, USB 2.0 card and a Sonnet serial ATA card. I have two HDs: one of 80GB and another one with 250GB (serial ATA) connected to the serial ATA card.
I have installed OS X Tiger in this serial ATA HD. Some weird things are happening since then. Sometimes when I shutdown my Mac, the delay is too long, all the icons disappear and the spinning wheel cursor remains in the screen for a long time until the Mac shuts down.
Sometimes when I try to open some applications, the same thing happens, the delay is long. And it happens too when I try to quit some applications. The sintom doesn't follow a rule - sometimes happen and other times it don't happen. And when I hit optioncommandesc to force quit, the application appears in the list as 'not responding', and even when I force quit it doesn't quit at all.
I already have checked the disk permissions, I have runned MacJanitor, but the problem is still there.
    Any idea?

Hello! Long delays are often caused by corrupt disk directories. I'd first boot from the install Tiger disc and run the repair disk routine and then repair permissions AFTER rebooting from the hard drive. Other than that I'd get Diskwarrior to keep the directories in good shape. Tom

  • Multiple problems with 80GB classic, don't know where to start.

    Hey guys,
I got an Apple classic 80GB for my bday early August and lately i've been having so many problems i dont know where to start, i'll try to explain them as best as i can.
*problem 1:* Whenever i plug my iPod into my PC, it locks up the system for about 5 minutes, then comes up with an error box saying that 'There is a problem with your iPod yadda yadda restore etc'.
I proceed to restore the iPod, then once its restored and reconnects itself, it repeats the cycle by freezing then telling me to restore. The only way i can do a restore and have it not give me an error is if i reboot when it is disconnected.
*Problem 2:* When i finally get it up and ready to sync, i go to sync all my files (About 2000 songs). It gets to around the 1500 song mark then says there is an error and the iPod disconnects itself.
It then instantaneously reconnects itself and starts syncing from where it left off.
Once it has then sync'd all of the music ad tells me its ready to be ejected. I eject the iPod and disconnected it.
I then go into the iPod and it has no songs/videos/photos, yet it has still used up about 15gb. If i reconnect it, it will just sit there for 5 minutes not syncing, it will then randomly say the sync is done and it will eject itself.
FINALLY after all that i have my music on there
*Problem 3* Once the songs are on the iPod, it becomes insanely laggy. If i navigate to a song and press play, it will take about 10 seconds for the actual song to play. The delay is just as bad for next song, pause etc. Even using it in my cars head unit causes it to lag.
*Problem 4* If i do get a song playing after all that, about 1/5 songs will just randomly skip to the next song without letting it play through.
I have all the latest iTunes/Firmware/Drivers for everything on my PC and iPod.
I have sent it back to Apple for repair yet they could not find anything wrong (Yeah right :|)
If anyone out there could help me please, im at my wits end with this infernal machine.
    Thankyou

*Outdated operating system:* Cant be, im running XP SP3 with the latest updates
*Computer needs updates:* I've got the latest drivers for all of my hardware, including BIOS
*Software interference:* THe only other program i have running in the background is Kaspersky Antivirus, but that is disabled when i try to sync
*Damaged Files* Possibly, i played through the album where it froze at and even reo-imported it, it seemed to play and import fine
*Unregistered .dll files (Windows):* Tried this fix, but it did the same problems as the original post. Such as freezing on a certain song, then reconnecting itself only to put the music on there, yet it is really laggy
*Damaged disk structure:* Tried this fix, didn't help
*Corrupt iPod photo Cache* I have never tried to put photos on it, so i dont see how this could be it.
*Lost connection:* Checked it, it's very firm and unlikely to come loose.
*Conflict with third-party hardware:* I dont have any connected, nor have i ever
*Bad hardware:* I tried it on all of my 8 USB drives. I dont use any hubs or firewire cards so this couldn't be it.
Also i forgot to add that 1/5 times i go to restore, it locks the computer up and windows gives me a 'delayed write failed' bubble

  • Serious problem with my iPod Classic/iTunes

I have a 6th Generation iPod classic (80 GB), and recently, I have been having some serious problems with it.
When I connect it to iTunes, there is usually no problem, it shows up, plays and displays the music correctly, etc. However, if I try to ADD any music to it, iTunes will freeze, then close, and within 5 minutes, my entire computer will freeze completely, and be shut off. For whatever reason, happen when my iPod finally disconnects because my computer turned off, all of my music is missing from the library (This doesn't happen every time it freezes, because I try to disconnect my iPod manually before everything freezes). The music is still on the iPod, (it says that I have XX.X GB of "other" instead of music/videos), but it doesn't show up. When I plug in my iPod, iTunes says that there was a problem and I need to restore it. The first time this happened, I lost over 5,800 songs, but I forgave Apple, because these things do occasionally happen, plus I had no idea what exactly went on. The SECOND time happened within the same week, after I had put 800 songs back on the restored iPod. The first time happened when I was using iTunes 10 (which is seriously buggy on my computer, and freezes often), so I switched to iTunes 9 (still buggy, but doesn't freeze quite as much), and the same thing happened. So now I'm thinking it's my iPod's fault. My iPod does a whole host of minor problems over time such as making certain songs cut off at a certain specific point for no reason (Always the same song, always the same cut off point, and I can't fast forward past it, I also can't delete the songs because if I highlight them on iTunes, iTunes will freeze, and if I find them under the music folder in iPod control, my computer will freeze), freezing the entire iPod for seemingly no reason, and somehow messing up my album artwork (it will appear as "Colourful Static"), along with alot more.
I know this is a troublesome problem, but if anyone could somehow shine some light on this problem, it would be tremendously appreciated.
    Thank you
    -Eric Luna

Unfortunately, when a hard drive starts clicking that means it's going bad. The mechanism is having trouble reading the drive. Since the iPod is mostly just a harddrive and a battery I have a feeling that this is your problem.
    watch this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMm6c3fr-fU
about 25ss in is where the clicking starts. If it sounds like that, but softer and more muffled since it is a smaller drive that is being enclosed then I think you might be SOL. Maybe if you're iPod is still under warranty you can get a credit and go for a touch and avoid moving parts all together?

    Self explanatory.
You could try creating an iPod version of the films.
Use CTRL and B to display the Menu bar shown above. Alternatively, use the ALT key, followed by the F key, the W key and finally the I (eye) key - that's (menu)/File/Create New Version/Create iPod or iPhone version.

  • Alpine CDE-103Bt Head Unit and Problem with 160 Gig Ipod Classic

    Hi,
2 weeks agao I brought a new Alpine CDE-103BT Head unit for my car. I have owned one of the old 160 gig classics for the last year and a half and at the time I brough the unit I was told this should all work sweet. Indeed all of the documentation from Alpine, and the Sales person, said this would not be a problem.
Unfortunately from Day one, most times after I received a phone call, while playing my ipod, the Head Unit would givesme an "Error-03" message and stop playing my music. I would then have to unplug my ipod, reset it, and plug it back in. Extremely frustrating.
The people I brought the Head Unit from are trying to say its an Ipod problem, yet I never had any problems with it and after I contacted the Australian Ipod help line they said it all appears to be working correctly. The firmware version I was on when I first tried the ipod on the head unit was 1.1.2. The Alpine manual said it should be 1.1.1 (then again you would expect them to be able to cope with updates) so as a last ditch attempt I downgraded the firmware on my ipod to 1.1.1, but it did not make a difference.
The only other thing I have noticed is that I switch the repeat and shuffle settings off when I plug in the unit, but after I unplug it after an Error-03 the Repaet function has been swtiched to all - I am not sure if this is what is causing the problem.
I am getting pretty frustrated with everything and I was wondering if anyone else has come accross this issue and even me helpful had they found a way to fix it.
If not has anyone had any postive expereinces with Alpine head units?
    Thanks

    - I have the latest Updates and looked for the latest HP DeskJet software, but this is the newest, version 3.3
    - I spoke with HP support, but they said that this is a problem in OS X
    - until now in MacOS 9 the printer worked fine
    The problem is:
    - from Mail only the header will be printed, but not the message itself
    - from AppleWorks is ssems as if only the first "pixel-rows are printed from each line
    Any help?

Hello, Same problem with HP Deskjet 895Cse. I had printer on my G4 tower running 10.3. My macbook pro was networked through the G4 to printer, all good. I just moved my printer and plugged in directly to macboook pro USB port................ Iregular printing. With normal size fonts, 12, just the top few pixels of each sentence gets printed. With larger fonts like 36 or 48, the print is pretty interesting, but not readable. Sometmes it just spits out pages with 1 sentence, top bit only, on each page. Appleworks, word & pdf's from preview, all print the same. HP alignment, HP test , HP clean all show normal. ?????????????????????
