Problems with .png files when printing

Hi,
When sending my InDesign document to print (from exported pdf's)
some of my .png files are showing up with semi transparent boxes
of a different shade than the surround. This reflects the size of the files.
On screen these discrepancies are not apparrent.
Where does this problem lie? In the way I have made the .png's?
Or a setting in InDesign?
Or with the printer?
Any suggestions welcome,
Thanks
Nik

  • Problems with color matching when printing...

         Hi, I work for a small family business in the P.O.P. industry.  We currently have myself and one other designer, we both take illustrator files that have come from the graphic design firm that we contract with and get them ready to print on our Vutek QS3200.  However ever since acquiring the printer we have begun to run into problems with the colors when printing.  When the files are exported off of my computer, I use either .tif or .pdf files, they print as they should, the colors seem to match the proof and everything goes smoothly.  However when the other designer exports a file, he tends to do mainly pdfs, the colors tend to be extremely different from where we want them.  Also we will get very strange results, such as yesterday he kept getting a faint yellow 1/2" border around his prints.  After I believe 3+ hours of him trying, I was given the original CD and instructed to try.  After 15-20 minutes of making the changes that we needed to make (adding a new price point) and ripping, mine printed perfectly.
         We both use Macs, both have CS3 Design standard, only differences between the computers are mine is newer and a bit faster, and I'm running OS 10.5.6 and he has 10.4.  He has also at some point loaded various color profiles, whereas my CS package is just whatever the default is when I loaded it.  When we were being trained he grabbed the color profile off of the Colorburst RIP server and loaded onto his computer, plus I believe he has a couple for freelancing purposes on there as well.  My thought is that these profiles are somehow corrupting the files that are going through that computer, but I honestly am lost with it at the moment.  He believes the problem lies within the fact that he does not have the newer OS, I honestly cannot see that as having any effect on this at all.  I was wondering if anyone has run into any similar problems, or if anyone might have any advice on this issue?  I would really like to be able to solve this, as I was hired to do mainly structural design for the P.O.P. and I'm having to put in a lot of overtime to get my work done along with the additional work that I'm having to do.
    Thanks for your time

    I've got a few years experience calibrating large format printers.  First, the Yellow sounds like a file problem.  I used to work with two workstations, one PC ( RIP station ), and one Mac ( file prep station ).  I tend to agree with you in that the OS is probably not the problem.  But, any Colorburst profiles should remain in the RIP, not in the originator application.  My workflow consisted of creating EPS files that were based on established color settings in their given applications ( i.e., Illustrator, Photoshop ) which were interpreted by the RIP which had it's own calibrated profile ( perhaps more than one based on how many different substrates were being used ).  Your partner may be complicating things by incorporating a RIP profile prematurely.  If there are deviations big enough to be noticed, there has to be something in the application color settings that is causing some type of corruption.  This could lead back to the operating system, but I would think it lies somewhere in Bridge or the application color settings.  Start there.  You should seriously consider implementing a calibration system if you do not have one already.  Another slight possibility is the driver's ability to interpret files coming out of Leopard vs. files coming out of Tiger.  It may benefit you both to be in the same operating system dynamics, using the same driver versions and RIP profiles.  At the very least, match everything that is currently working successfully and put them on both machines.  If there is still a noticeable problem in color matching, then something is seriously wrong and you should call in a prepress profiling expert.  Hope this helps.

  • Problem with margins shifting when printing.

    I have an installation template on an 11x17 sheet with 3/8” margins. There is a “left” and “right” version on each side (basically mirrored) and the intent is that they align front to back when you hold the sheet up to the light. When we print a proof, two sided, on our laser printer, the drawings match when the single sheet is held up to the light, but the margins are no longer the same; each is offset by a 1/16” in the same direction. BUT when you print one sided on our printer and hold the 2 sheets back to back, the drawings are off by 1/8” because the margins are off by the 1/16' in different directions. This creates a problem when it is sent to the commercial printers as they are printing single sided to their printing plates. (The problem still appears in the exported PDF file the printers use)
    The problem is, I can’t get InDesign to stop shifting the content on the page that 1/16”!
    If I look at the page, the margin guides show the correct 3/8”on both sides.
    If I look at the Master page, the margin guides show the correct 3/8”on both sides.
    Under “Margins and Columns” in InDesign, I found the correct margins set (0.375 - 3/8”) all around,  with 1 column and a 0.1667” Gutter. Ha .. I thought I had found it! So I removed the Gutter and checked “Enabled Layout”, But when printed, same problem.
    I then though it must be on the master pages and found and did the same thing as above, still no luck!
    Then I created a new master page and set it up as above and reapplied the new master page, still no luck!
    I’m stumped!?! If we can’t get these margins correct we can’t send it to the commercial printer.
    Thanks in advance for any help!

    Well I don't know for a fact that it is, but the customer is a major International Fortune 500 Company and this is an Installation sheet printed and included in one of their product packages, so I would imagine it is an offset press.
    Besides, if the commercial printer was using a commercial Laser printer, can't they print 2-sided? There is no problem when it is printed 2-sided, the images align because both margins are offset in the same direction. It is only when it is printed 1-sided (one side to each printing plate) that the problem becomes obvious because the offsets are in the opposite directions. (BTW, it is B&W)

  • Wrong with font file when printing InDesign

    I get an error message when press print and the message is "There was a problem with the font file" (translated from Swedish) I have tried to change font but it dosent help. Anyone that have a solution to fix this problem?
    I have started to use latest InDesign CC when this happened after used it for a couple of weeks. Running a HP 64 bit workstation with Windows XP

    Sounds like it is warning you are missing a font in the document when printing it.
    When you open the InDesign document, In the lower-left corner of your screen, do you see any errors?
    Double-click the error. This will display the Preflight panel.
    Click on the Expansion arrow next to Text.
    Do you see a 'Mssing font' error? If yes, keep expanding until you can select the actual error.
    At the bottom of the panel, click the expansion arrow to the left of Info. You'll be able to see a bit more information about the error, and also a tip on how you can fix it. E.g. you can either install the font on your computer, or replace it with another font before printing. If you click on the link to the far right of the error, it will take you to the text in the document that is formatted with a missing font.

    Hi  - Go ahead and try the steps in this document.  It will walk you through cleaning the contacts on both the cartridge and in the carriage.  What can happen over time is ink residue can accumulate on the contacts preventing the ink cartridges from working properly.  If this doesn't resolve the issue, try setting the cartridge with the nozzles face down on a damp paper towel for about 45 seconds just to resolve any problems with the ink nozzles.
    Hope that helps.

  • Discoverer Plus - Problem with Page Orientation when printing pdf's

    Hi,
    When printing pdf's in Disco Plus I have a problem:
    My workbooks are a mixture of landscape and portrait pages.
    I am printing the entire workbook and then using cutepdf to produce a pdf.
    If I print to paper I get the correct landscape/portrait settings.
    If I print to pdf then landscape pages appear vertically when I view on screen so that the text is running from bottom to top of the page.
    So it is picking up th portrait/landscape settings from the individual worksheets but cutepdf has not realised that the pages are landscape so they appear on the screen vertically.
    This was not a problem on discoverer desktop so I am confident that this is not a problem with cutepdf.
    Any thoughts?
    Justin

  • IE6 problems with PNG files (no, not transparency)

    For some reason, although all the images seem to appear just
    fine, IE6 keeps
    acting like it can't finish loading the two PNG files on the
    page. It just
    hangs at the last byte, it seems. I can leave the browser for
    an hour and
    I'll still come back to a status bar indicating 1 file
    remaining, *.png
    (even though that file is visible and fully loaded
    on-screen).
    http://www.vilverset.com/mark.html
    It's like IE6 can't "close the connection" on PNG files once
    it's opened for
    download.
    It more than likely has something to do with the attached
    pngfix.js file to
    enable alpha channel filtering in IE6. But since Murray
    recommended this
    specific fix, I won't go out looking for another one. There
    might just be a
    typo somewhere causing this.
    Thanks.

  • Problem with CSS files when placed in multiple locations.

    Hi,
    In our application we have a folder structure for the code files. Folder structure looks something like the one shown below:
    ABC
    ---Scripts
    ---Stylesheets
    DEF
    Scripts
    Stylesheets
    Common
      ---Scripts
      ---Stylesheets
      The problem is, if we create a CSS file and place it in its module specific folder (Eg: ABC) to which it belongs to and call the CSS on a page, then the styles are not getting applied to the page. But if we move the stylesheet to the Common folder, then page renders properly. In common folder, we already have a common CSS which is used across the project.
    Facing similar problem with module specific and common js files.
    We have to move all the module specific files to the module folders and all the common files to be placed in the Common folder.
    MII Version: 11.5
    Please help!
    Regards,
    Rajesh.

    Rajesh,
    Also note that, If your html is referencing to multiple css files then the last referenced CSS file style classes will override all the style class having same names in the previous css files.
    for example,
    say CSS1 has
    .bodycolor
    background-color:yellow;
    .button
    color:red;
    h1
    font-size:50pt;
    and CSS2 has
    .bodycolor
    background-color:red;
    .button
    color:yellow;
    And your HTML is,
    <html>
    <head>
    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css1.css"/>
    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css2.css"/>
    <title>CSS Test</title>
    </head>
    <body class="bodycolor">
    <h1>Hello World</h1>
    <input type="button" class="button" name="B1" id="B1" value="      Click         " size="50">
    </body>
    </html>
    In this case the classes "bodycolor" and "button" will be overridden by css2 file but h1 will be taken from css1
    Hope this helps!!

  • Best way to work with .png files for print

    My client suppllied 100 color .png files (screen captures), about 1700 pixels wide for his book. I opened one with Photoshop, saved as Tiff, converted to Grayscale, cropped to 300 dpi and placed in InDesign, but the InDesign file size is almost 2mb. Is there a better method?

    That’s not what I mean at all…I mean what ever they are, they are. Just place them and be done with it.
    There is nothing you can do with them in Photoshop that will make them better.
    And you are incorrect…the fact that one page document is 2 megs does not mean the full document will 200. Graphics are linked, not embedded, by default.
    Do not embed them.
    I’m going to move this thread to the InDesign forum.

  • Problem with special characters (&) when printing using XSL-FO ...

    Hello everybody !!
    I have a problem when I want to print a Report with a link to a URL where the character "&" is present :
    I want to have something like : src="file:///...webfile?param1=val1*+_&_+*param2=val2"
    In my XSL-FO file, I wrote : src="file:///...webfile?param1=<xsl:value-of select="IDARTICLE"/>*+_<xsl:text>&amp;</xsl:text>_+*param2=<xsl:value-of select="MARQUE"/>"
    When I try this only with FOP, it works. However, when I upload the XSL-FO file to ApEx, it says my PDF file is corrupted when I want to open it.
    What do I have to put the '&' symbol when I want to print the Report ??
    Could anyone help me ??
    Thanks by advance,
    Pierre C.

    I believe this relates to something I have actually found in my own testing.
    It is probably due to the Template not being URLEncoded prior to transmission to the FOP processor.
    I actually determined that special URL characters, like '+' and '&', are lost on transmission because the type of submission is POST with x-www-form-urlencoded, but the fields are not actually encoded entirely. The XML Element contents are encoded prior to transmission in order to preserve data.
    Work around would be to URLEncode the template as it sits in the WWV_FLOW_REPORT_LAYOUTS. I have been able to successfully get around the problem by doing that.

  • Problem with Reader file when we try to save a pdf version of filled in file.

    We currently create fillable forms in Acrobat XI and enable them for fill-in with Acrobat Reader.  Our end users are able to key information and save it to the enabled pdf file with Reader, but they want to create a protected version of the form so nothing can be modified once they have approved it.  They have been creating "locked" pdf versions of the completed form using CutePdf software.  The PDF files they are creating open fine with Acrobat Pro XI or our free FoxIT reader, but when we try to open the files they created with CutePDF with Acrobat Reader, they are quite distorted.  According to users, this worked with older versions of Acrobat Reader.  Please let us know if you have any suggestions (other than switching from Acrobat Reader to the free FoxIT reader.
    Thanks for the help!!
    Ken K. - 2191

    Can't endorse FoxIt or CutePDF, since I don't use either of them, and Adobe doesn't like us endorsing thrid party products in their forums anyway. On top of that I know several people who had really bad adware experiences with FoxIt, so I'd say stay away from it.
    Most likely neither of these software developers has updated THIER software to work with Acrobat/Reader XI and the problem lies with them, since PDF is an Adobe format and they must follow the lead from here, not vice-versa.

  • Header problem with photosmart 8180 when printing with company letterhead

    I print many letters through MS Word 2003.  When I print a letter on plain paper, it looks fine and is the correct distance (1 1/2") from the top of the page(s).  Our letterhead consists of a 1" dark band with our logo included and our address across the bottom of the page.  I then insert our letterhead to print a final, the printer moves the letter (date, name, address and body) down another 1", meaning the printer is using the bottom of the band to measure the top margin.  It also ignores the bottom margin of 1" and just prints into the address, instead of going to the next page.  Both types of paper are the same 8 1/2 X 11.
    We have Konica network printer and I previously had a HP 930 printer and never have seen this before.  I have uninstalled the printer and reinstalled and the only change I have made since is to change the the paper type, under "Print", "Properties", "Features", "Paper Type", from Automatic to Plain Paper.  Neither helps.
    I have an extended email list with HP Customer Care, telling me everything from installing a 990C driver (or virtual printer?) to have me check to make sure I knew how to load paper.
    I then spent over an hour on the phone with an HP rep and even gave him control of my computer, to no avail.  He thinks he fixed the problem by having me reduce the top margin, to say 1/2" and basically trick the printer into printing at the correct place below the band, but the second page is now too far up because of that.
    I hope someone can help.  I found it hard to believe that this has only happened to me.
    Thanks for any help.

  • Problem with receiver file adapter printing data line by line in .txt file

    We are working on e-payments integration with one of the bank. As part of text file generation, we have a written a UDF which accumulates all Invoice details( 10 input fields information ) into one string and then sends output line by line with a delimiter separation for each invoice.

    Bank requires a file in above format separating invoice in separate E band.( one invoice collection in one E band)
    As per our scenario, multiple invoice details from an idoc(PAYEXT) have to be written to a text file line by line.  i.e one invoice details per one row.
    After the execution of the scenario, in SXMB_MONI, the message display clearly showing that the invoice details are printed line by line. A java function used in message mapping for the writing the invoice details line by line.
    But actual file that is written to a text file is showing all the invoice details in written in single row.
    When I enable the option Word wrap in the notepad, then only I can see the details in desired format.

    Hi,
    I am taking outputs of Customer Facing Documents from SAP R/3 using Jetform Output Designer Version 5.4.0.130.
    The printer I am using is HP LaserJet 5100 Series. From the information I gathered this uses PCL 6. Therefore I compiled the file with the presentment target HP Laserjet 5000/5000N(PCL6)-[hp5000x]. When I use the PDF viewer as the default it gives me perfect alignment of the various fields. However when I take a printout everything is disturbed.
    Can you please suggest, what is the best approach to take.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Paul

    There is a difference in resolution between PDF print and PCL print. E.g. PDF is default 1000 dpi, which is fine for screen view, yet most printers are 300 dpi or 600 dpi.
    If you make a copy of the PDF.ICS to apv_PDF.ICS. You can change the resolution by opening the file with a text editor like Notepad. Set the value to match your printer. Choose your custom PDF printer driver in Output Designer and recompile the form.
    You'll find it in the \Config directory where your designer is installed. ..\JetForm\Output Designer\Config
