Problems with Retina Macbook pro and time machine backup

I was able to successfully copy over data from myn old macbook to the new pro via a time machine backup.  But now can not get it to use the time machine to start creating backups.  I have tried with two different time machines (home and office) and on both I am getting the same error: unable to create sparse bundle.  Tried updating the airport firmaware reboot etc, any ideas?

Here is the actual error:
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Test/new mac book.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1).

Do you have Parallels installed by any chance?  There is a known problem that causes symptoms similar to this.  You do not need to actually be running Parallels at the time and nothing in ActivityMonitor would point to Parallels.  An update corrects the problem:

iTunes is a mess! It couldn't find it's own libraries and I was forced to create a new one. Now I don't know where my music is or if any's missing.

    How crap is that?
    It's not crap at all.
It's not that simple. For example, I've 3500 songs on my MacBook but don't want them all on my phone, so I have to manually select each song again???
There has to be a solution.
Why not simply make a playlist with the songs you want on the iPhone?
and maintain a current backup of your computer.

  • I'm having a hard time setting up my external hard from with my AirPort Extreme and Time Machine Backups.

I have been using a Mac Mini with an external hard and Time Machine.  I bought an Airport Extreme and have had problem setting up the hard drive using the USB port on the Airport Extreme.  I also just recently bought a Mac Book Air and hope to have both computers back up to the external hard drive using Time Machine and Airport Extreme.  I have been using the optical drive from the Mac mini to load programs into the Mac Book Air.  I think I'm just getting confused in Finder.  I am just not seeing the hard drive.  I ended up plugging the hard drive back into the Mac Mini and that is work fine again.  How do I setting the external hard drive up to the AirPort Extreme and use for both computers?  Or at least to start with the Mac mini.

It's critical to understand that Time Machine (TM) stores backups differently between local and network drives. That would mean the TM backup on your locally attached USB hard drive will not be directly useable when it is connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). There is a way to copy a local version to a network version, but it is not fool-proof. When you do connect this drive and point TM to it, TM will start a brand new backup, leaving your existing backup as is.
If your current backup is critical to you, you may want to consider getting a second USB drive to attach to the Extreme and use your existing one as a backup ... or use TM's multi-backup process to backup to more than one destination drive alternatively.
So, at this point, you may want to make a decision on how you want to go forward to help provide a solution for you.
To directly answer your question, when you go to select a destination for a Time Machine backup, the drive(s) that show up under "Backup Disks" are those that TM already recognizes and has backed up to. Those listed under "Available Disks" are drives (either local or on the network) that TM can back up to.

  • Problem with daisy chaining HDDs and Time Machine

I have purchased 2 WD My Passport Studio FireWire 2TB HDDs which I have daisy chained to my MacBook Pro.  One I have assigned to be the Time Machine backup the other as an additional data drive.  Both are formatted for Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  I setup Time Machine to backup both the internal and external drive.  When I set it up everything looked OK in Time Machine Preferences, but the daisy chained data drive displayed on the desktop with the Time Machine backup logo and the backup drive displayed as a standard FireWire data drive. However the backup worked successfully and backed everything up to the correct backup drive.
I have since established the following:
    1.  If both drives are daisy chained and then plugged in, the data drive shows up with the backup icon and the backup drive shows as a data drive, but Time Machine backs up to the correct drive.  This is the case regardless of what order the drives are daisy chained.
    2.  If the backup drive is plugged in on its own it shows up correctly with the backup drive icon.  If the data drive is then daisy chained to the backup drive both drives show up as backup drives.  Time Machine backs up to the correct backup drive.
    3. If the data drive is plugged in on its own it shows up incorrectly as the backup drive.  If the backup drive is then daisy chained to the data drive the backup drive shows as a normal FireWire data drive. But Time Machine still backs up to the correct drive.  Exactly the same as case 1 but the drives have been daisy chained after connecting to the MacBook Pro and the result is the same.
    4. However if the data drive is plugged in on its own, showing up as the backup drive, Time Machine backs up to the data drive incorrectly.
The first three points are just annoying as the drive icons do not display correctly, although it does indicate to me that Time Machine is confused.  But what I don't like is the fact that I can't just use the external data drive without the backup drive being present.
How do I overcome this problem?

Launch Disk Utility and select one of the volumes in question. Click the Info button in the toolbar. In the Information window that opens, note the Universal Unique Identifier. Do the same with the other volume. Are the identifiers the same?

  • Image size problem with Retina Macbook Pro

I exported raw images to Jpg and then resized as 1200 x 800 resolution images through "Easy batch Pro" app. When I uploaded them, they were extremely large. I've tried it several times and the result was always the same. Is it a problem with "Easy batch Pro" app, or something with Retina Display resolution? I also resized them as small size like 600x400, but the image was totally broke, and apparently had different look when I saw the original via aperture. What should I do?

What's the problem exactly?  Call and complain.  It's up to them on how they want to handle it, but if it's something normal or minor, they'll just fix the issue under warranty and send you on your way.  That's how warranty works.  In instances where a user has had repetative failure of the same kind or others with the same system, a complete replacement was done, but those were issues that border on the "it's a lemon" idea.

If i had to guess, I would say prosessor stress is to blame.  When you are running a virtual machine, it borrows resources from the host to run the guest OS.  The CPU, however, is prioritized Host first, then guest second.  With a 27" display connected via Display Port. that is a larger strain on the processor.   Honestly, on my 23" iMac, I see a WORLD of difference between the speed of the host and the speed of the guest.  That is just something you live with on virtual machines, nothing compares to hardware.     I'm sorry I dont have a better answer, but that is all I have.

  • Macbook pro and time machine

hi guys , just want to know if i have a mbp with 2 users on it and i set up time machine with the admin user , will the second user also be backed up automatically to time machine or do i have to set the other user up as well ?

    security master,
if you set up the Time Machine backup to back up the entire disk, then all users’ data will be backed up.

  • Noisy MacBook Pro on Time Machine Backup

My older model MacBook Pro (Model Identifier 1,1 - Intel Core Duo) running OS 10.6.8 has developed a noise during Time Machine backups to my Time Capsule.
It sounds like a vibration noise (very subdued) but noticeable.
Starts when TM Backup begins & stops some seconds after it ends.
If I 'Stop Backing Up', the noise stops in a few seconds; it begins again if I restart the backup.
As the backup occurs every hour, it is quite distracting.
The computer is working great with no obvious problems.
    Any suggestions much appreciated.
    ...John

Can you identify where the noise is coming from?  My suspicions point to the HDD.
    Ciao.

  • Using Remote Disc to transfer Office to Macbook Air and Time Machine backup

    Hello,
I just bought the new version of Macbook Air. At the store they said that transferring programs such as Office for Mac was as easy as just opening the sharing folderin preferences on my Imac and new Air and it would be a breeze. Do I have to install anything from the DVD that came with the Macbook Air to enable anything, or will I just, by wifi, start the two machines communicating?
Also, is there any easy way to just backup my last Time Machine backup from my Imac to the new Air, or does this take some doing? Can I backup the Time Machine info while still keeping all of the info on it for my usual work with the Imac?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

First, the instruction book that comes with your MBA will walk you step by step through how to use remote disc. Its not just an open and play thing -- you do have to futz with your other machine, copy over security codes to allow communication, etc -- but it will walk you right through it, so the manual is the place to start.
You can use your Time Machine backup by using the Migration Assistant -- that starts right off the bat when you first initialize your MBA right out of the box, or you can go to Applications>Utilities>Migration Assistant anytime you want.
One thing you should be aware -- you don't really have too many options for the migration -- it will copy over everything from your TIme machine so you better have enough room on your MBA to do that. You can select if you don't want files copied (i.e. music) but that is about it. I did just that wiht my MBP backup on TIme machine -- it was about 100 GB and my new MBA is 120 GB. No problems there, worked perfectly.
Don't do your migration wirelessly -- about 100GB wirelessly on the MBA with a fast cable broadband connection would take 16 - 20 HOURS to do a migration. Connect your MBA via the optional ethernet dongle to an ethernet cable, and hardwire that to an open ethernet port on your router -- 100GB will then take about 2 - 3 hours instead.
ANother thing you should be aware of -- while Apple really touts the Remote Disc and wireless capabilities of the MBA, they are for the birds. Invest the 99.00 in a superdrive. It will be the happiest purchase you make for your MBA. If you install your MS Office via remote disc, for example, your installation will take about an hour. It takes 3 minutes with the superdrive. That is the same for anything you try to do via remote disc. Yeah, it works. It just takes hours and hours of your time. I don't know about you, but I have no interest in waiting an hour for a program to install.
As to your final question -- your Time Machine backup will ALWAYS remain associated with your iMac. After the migration assistant completes, you do not have a connection to that backup on your MBA anymore. You will have to do a fresh backup of your MBA if you want to back it up to your TIme machine. The Time machine makes a specific backup for each computer that you own. You can copy from the backup, but you can't reaccess it later. It will remain accessable to your iMac.

  • New Macbook Pro Restore Time Machine backup?

How can I restore a time machine backup on a new MacBook Pro?
    Thanks!
    Damien

Not brand new, a few months old, already installed progams I wanted to carry over.  Now i was trying to do the Migration assist for the files I want and now I'm getting this message:

  • Just started my new Macbook Pro, from Time Machine backup and the password is not working

Just got home with my new mackbook pro, and going through the startup process I booted from a time machine back up of my 2007 macbook. When I got to the login part of the process, after the new macbook was registered and ready to go, and now my password is not recognized.

    Sorry about that.
I just got done posting back and forth with someone with a similar problem (not exact).
Turn the power off by holding down the power button, that is if just one push does not turn it off.
Then turn it back on and hold down the Option key. That will give you a startup screen where you can select which partition on the drive to boot into. Select the Recovery partition. From there you can use Disk Utility to wipe the Macintosh partition of the drive and then do a reinstall of the OS from the Apple website.
You need a internet connection to do this and depending on your internet speed it can take a few hours to complete. If you have a fairly fast internet connection it may still take 1-2 hours to download the 3.5+GB file to do the reinstall.
Before you go through all this try turning the system off and back on a few time to see if Lion can recover on it's own. I doubt it but it's worth a shot.
Again sorry for the condescending tone.
    Happy New Year.

  • Printing problems with new Macbook Pro and Canon I9900

I would like to know why my printed output on the Canon I9900 is showing up much darker than the image shown on the screen. I have installed the latest driver from Canon and am still having this problem. I have tried the different Colorsync profiles listed for the Canon and have not seen any improvement. I am using 4x6 matte paper by Kodak and have selected the correct paper type and settings.
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi there,
I would like to know why my printed output on the
Canon I9900 is showing up much darker than the image
    shown on the screen.
The answer to your question is simple; colour on a monitor is made differently than colour on a printed image. Monitors combine Red, Green and Blue (RGB) in a process called Additive colour while printers use Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black (CMYK) with a process known as Subtractive colour. The matching of what you see on the screen to what you get printed is a time consuming (and expensive) process and often subject to a users preference.
For the home user this process is often too complicated. If you accept that what you see is not what you will get then half the battle will be won. However, that doesn't mean that you cannot get good output on your printer. A number of applications give you the ability to adjust your output. You just need to experiment with a number of settings to get a 'workflow' that you prefer. If you can tell me which application you are using to print from I may be able to offer some values that will help.

Hi. You might have a memory problem. With one or more of your ram being bad. If this is so you can try removing the ram one at a time and try to restart . You can also switch ram slots to make sure ifs not the ram slot. Before you do this try a pram reset. Command/Option/P/R holding down these keys while starting up for three chimes. Also a SMC reset.http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202768
