Problems with SATA DVD drives

I recently purchased this MacPro. I have since added 2 SATA DVD drives to the system that originally had 2 PATA drives. The problem that I am having is that initially I can eject the disk from both drives but after 5 minutes both drives stop responding and neither will eject. Has anyone else had similar problems. I would appreciate any ideas.

Yes I did. When I unchecked it I was able to eject them. Thank you very much. I knew it was something simple that I was missing.

    Problem with SATA DVD/RW

I use the Plextor PX-712SA's with no issues. However...I do not believe the SATA versions require jumpers. Try plugging them in on SATA port 1 or 2, making sure those are enabled in BIOS of course. Make sure all connections are secure. There have been some issues with these particular drives not operating properly, but it has not been an issue with seasoned system builders, so the problems may be with the builder himself. Usually, Plextors are so good, they'll almost burn a paper plate! Try a different medium, maybe another brand of blank CD or DVD.
You may also want to check Device Manager in Windows, to see if it is listed "This device is working properly"!

    HI,
did your friend installed the XP from a MS Cd or from the Toshiba recovery CD?
At my Toshiba notebook the autoplay section is also setted to Music file and works properly!
When did this failure occured for the first time? Did you used the MS System recovery option at Start - Accessories - system prog. - System recovery
Perhaps the backsetting of your system solve the problem!
You can also check if a firmware update is available for your drive! (If it is a Toshiba drive go to http://www.toshiba-europe.com/storage/index.asp?nav=HOM&page=HOM&frame=home

I'm running an Intel Core 2 Duo e6850 on an MSI p35 platinum motherboard with 64 bit Arch installed.  The drive gave me some problems when I installed arch; I could boot the CD, but once I tried to install any packages it told me that no CD drive was found, so I had to install from FTP.  I'd really like to have 64bit Arch on this computer, so I'd really appreciate any help.  Thanks.

I have the LiteOn DVD burner, and encounter the same problem as you. Tried everything suggested by others, nothing worked. Finally got it to install when I changed the memory settings from 667 to 400.

  • Having a problem with the DVD drive not being recognized by the computer

Compaq Presario CQ60-215DX NOTEBOOK PC, WINDOWS VISTA,  Error 10 when trying to reinstall the driver, says cannot start.
I went thru the HP troubleshooting and it said to see the mfg of drive to solve problem!  I finally bought a new DVD drive P/N498479-001 for replacement . uninstalled the old drive & then reinstalled the new drive , restarted the computer & it still will not recognize the DVD player! Same error code, same problem. The problem started when I tried to play a CD that appeared to be scratched pretty badly, however my desk top played the CD with out problems? When you click on "computer" the drive does not show up!
I did install a new router a couple of days before this happened, but I am using a data cable to it, so that should not be a problem. Any Ideas?

Apple has moved on from Firewire and the current iMacs (and most MBPs) have Thunderbolt, USB3 and USB2.
There are Firewire toThunderbolt adaptors. Here's one. You also want a four pin to nine pin FW cable to run from your camera to the adaptor.

  • Satellite L505-S5990 Problems with CD/DVD drive.

I have a new Satellite L505-S5990 using Windows 7. I have tried to burn a backup disc using my laptop but I keep receiving an error saying that the burner is busy or that I should update the driver. I have already updated the DVD/CD driver to it's latest version. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this problem?

Go into device manager, uninstall the DVD drive, then reboot the system to have WIndows automatically re-install it.  This often times take care of the problem.

  • Problem with cd/dvd drive on my Satellite 1900-303

    Hi Every body
I bought a Satellite 1900-303 in 2003. Recently, it's cd/Dvd drive stopped to work properly. whenever I put a Cd in the driver it assumes that the CD is a audio cd. if the CD is completly Audio cd or partly contained audio files it opens the cd without any problem. but if cd is data CD or software CD after trying along time my system hangs up. I change the settings of the properites of Cd drive in Autoplay section from Music file to other options such as "mixed content". but after inserting CD into the drivers it agains changes automaticaly to the "music file". I showed my notebook an expert in computer system and facility, he tried to reinstall windows XP to solve the problem but it didn't work. Since the driver was not working he used external driver to install windows XP. but the problem has not been solved.
Is there anybody who knows by accident what I should do to recover it?
    Awaiting helpful advices.

  • Problems with cd/dvd drive in L305D

I have the L305D-S5900 Satellite. So far this problem has happened twice, and I'm getting tired of it. I got the computer about 1 month ago. When I got it, I started taking off the bloatware and such that came installed on it(all the trial programs). And loading my own programs. After a while, I tried to test out the gaming abilities and played some full screen game. So far, everything worked. I shut the comp down and the next day, turned it on only to discover the cd/dvd drive stopped working. I went through device manager to see what the problem was, and listed next to the drive is this:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
I hadn't uninstalled anything relating to the drive, and it was working before I turned it off the night before. Even stranger is that when I did a search for an updated driver for the cd drive, it tells me that the driver installed is the most recent and I don't need one!
When I open My Computer, it lists the hard drive, and doesn't even show the cd/dvd drive installed. Also, I use daemon tools as well to provide virtual drives if I need them, and if I add a virtual drive to the computer, it doesn't show that either. If I put a cd or dvd into the drive, it doesnt autorun and I can't access the disk. however, I can boot from the drive if I use the toshiba recovery cd.
long story short, I had this problem the first week I got the computer, and I couldnt figure out the problem, so I did a fresh install and wiped everything out to start again. Well, yesterday the same exact problem occured and I can't figure out how to solve it.
I know I wrote a lot, but I wanted to describe the problem in-depth. Any solutions not including a fresh install would be appreciated.
    thank you very much.
    -Andrew

Here's one of the possible solutions for that. Type regedit on the Start Search box then click regedit on the Programs List. It will open the Registry Editor window. Look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} then delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters in the right pane. After that, restart your computer. Check if the ODD will show up on the My Computer window.

I just bought a new dvd-burner. At the first boot I noticed a lot of messages along the lines of:
    ata2 exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x2 frozen
and an extremely long boot time. 3 to 5 minutes. When finally booting in to system the drive seems very sluggish to mount. Should I disable sata and pata in mkinitcpio? Is my new hardware crap?

  • Terrible problems with CD/DVD drive on Power Mac G4

    Hey guys,
I am pretty much unable to use the CD/DVD reader and burner in my Mac.
    My Mac is a G4 dual-processor 1.42GHz with 2 GB of RAM running Mac OS X 10.4.11.
    Here are the problems:
After a while of reading or writing a CD or DVD, the drive seems to freeze. The disc cannot be ejected.
Any application which attempts to read or write to the disc thereafter will become a zombie (orphaned) process. Force-quitting the application or kill-9'ing it does nothing.
This strange "infection" will eventually spread to all open applications, which will colour-wheel. Even ejecting the CD with the button on the drive (which doesn't always work) doesn't help.
If you manage to restart before this takes complete hold, nothing happens. If you do "sudo shutdown-r now", the screen goes blue and the little grey spinner appears. When you are forced to pull the power, restarting takes 20 minutes as the computer checks all drives.
This happened with my standard-issue SuperDrive, so I bought a new drive to replace it, thinking it was faulty, but exactly the same thing happened.
This has gone on so long, and it drives me insane. If anyone has ever experienced any similar problems, please let me know, as I've never found any info on the web about it. Please help if you know how to fix this!
    Thank you in advance,
    John

If you don't have a spare battery but do have a digital multimeter you can do a quick voltage check on the installed battery. If it is the 3.6V half-cell variety it should read at least 3.2V.

  • Problem with CD/DVD drive

Well, it's broken. Doesn't play CD's, DVD's, or burn CD's. What are my options of replacement and how much would it cost me? Can I get an external system maybe?
Also, the 10.2.8 model is getting so old, it doesn't work with most of the new downloads/programs that are coming out. Is there anything I can do to upgrade this system? Or would I be better off buying a new computer?
    Thanks for your help.
    ichild

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    1. A new internal drive will be much quicker (16x Dual Layer) and will cost around $40 plus fitting - so free if you do it yourself and I'd guess around $70-80 (it's about £55-65 in the UK) if you have someone do it for you. (e.g. Pioneer DVR111)
    2. External Firewire drives will also be much faster (16x Dual Layer) and will set you back a little under $200 (e.g. Lacie) but should include the great Toast application.
If you install an Internal you'll need to either upgrade to Tiger or install Patchburn.
    3. You can certainly upgrade your machine from 10.2.8 to Tiger so it's more compatible with current applications (you'll find it a much nicer OS too!) You may need to upgrade your RAM to keep it happy though (256Mb is the bear minimum).
It'll be cheaper to update your current machine; but in the long run you may find it cheaper to not spend out on Tiger and a drive now when this money could be put towards a much more capable Intel Mac. Only you know your needs now and available cash flow!
    regards

Most likely it is the driver since it was working.  Was the reinstall of the old drivers an install, or a Restore back to an earlier date?  I would have done the Restore thereby getting the actual drivers and settings I had before the update.  You can still try this if it hasn't be too long ago.
If I have been helpful, a Kudo is always appreciated.

  • Scary "rattling / vibrating" noise with iMac DVD drive

I have an iMac for 2 months now and experience problems with the DVD drive. With some DVDs (not all, but still too many for my taste) it spins around quite fast and makes a scary sound as if the DVD is vibrating (rrrrrrr) inside the iMac's superdrive. I am a bit affraid it will damage my DVDs. When I try to burn a DVD with iDVD or Toast the DVD is ejected by the system with a HW error.
I called the Apple help desk and was asked to burn a DVD with finder. That went ok. Next DVD with iDVD failed. I was asked to install iDVD again, because they thought it could be a software issue. The next DVD I could burn without problems, so the case was closed. Later burning some DVDs failed again, but at the moment the majority succeeds. And reading some already written discs makes sometimes a scary noise, but I can still read them.
I am not sure if I should call apple again, because it not always fails. It is very disappointing to be having these problems with my first Apple. Didn't expect that at all. Every time I insert a DVD now, I wonder what will happen. But it would be a pity to have to add an external dvd reader/writer to the beautiful integrated iMac.
Anybody a suggestion, or is it better to call Apple again?

I also have this problem with my 2.4ghz, 24" iMac. It started a few months back and it didn't seem to affect the media I stuck into it and for about 75% of the time the vibration was minimal. Now some DVD media are getting stuck in the drive and it takes a lot of tries with the eject button before enough of the DVD or CD shows itself to pull it out ... otherwise it gets sucked back in and I am back trying again.
What has just freaked me out is that some of the discs I have just burnt, when inserted, ask whether I want to write them i.e thinks they are blank ... when they go perfectly on my powerbook or my wife's G5 iMac. I just thought I would check out the support forums for a lead, but doesn't seem like a regular fault so its off to the repair shop under warranty (up to a week wait around here).
So can't help that much iDijkman ... I suppose get it fixed while you still have some warranty.

  • Problems with my DVD/CD-ROM Drive (MS-8216)

I have a BIGGGG problem with my DVD/CD-ROM Drive (MS-8216)
I was copying somethin in my comp, and the cd got BOOOM into pieces inside.
My warranty expired 1 month ago, so i clean it in the inside. After this it is like this :
       - i can watch 700mb movies AVI format with no problems, but when i want to copy anything in my comp from the cd it always stops rotating at 6% of copiyng and BANG it stops and an error has acourde. Same with the dvd's. Please don't ask me about my comp config couse i know it has no problem with that. I left every thing like it was inside ---  impecable, no wiress unplugged and i've upgraded the firmware also
What can it be. Thank you

if you can read the CD, but not copy from it, try this program:
    Isobuster
It allows you to read with a much better accuracy than the generic windows driver.
However, i'm afraid your drive has been damaged in the explosion and this is only a work around, not a real solution.
The good point is that DVD burner are now cheap, but it is not much...

  • Mac Pro Early 2008 problems with firewire 400 drives

I am having some sporadic problems with firewire 400 drives and am trying to figure out my best options going forward. System 10.5.2 has hung on me twice in the first week of use, and each time I noticed from console there were some problems accessing one or more of these drives (even though I wasn't doing any reads/writes to/from them). Just before one of the crashes, Disk Utility also had problems "seeing" these drives. My external firewire drives are:
    Maxtor OneTouch III 750GB
    Acomdata enclosure/Seagate 400GB
    LaCie d2/160GB
    LaCie w/Lightscribe DVD
I have this "cobbled" arrangement because I just upgraded from an eMac and needed these drives to manage video files, audio files, photos, etc. While I'd love to go out and buy new internals to install in my spare bays, and migrate the data to them, I will have to do that in stages as my budget is tapped out at the moment. My MacPro is the base version of the early 2008 units, with 300GB internal.
In the interim, is it worth troubleshooting firmware updates for these externals, or am I destined to continue to have firewire problems? Is there a straight-forward/inexpensive way to remove these drives from enclosures/install in drive bays with an adaptor? I believe the external hard drives are all ATA type drives.
Thanks in advance for any counsel.

I would assume that the Maxtor may be SATA. Does it have an eSATA port? Also, there were a lot of threads (in OS X Leopard forum) about those OneTouch units. Same can be said for LaCie problems.
Yes, check for firmware and configuration. In some cases, and what I do with any new OS, is to reformat all drives - gradually. Given the age of the eMac I'd guess firmware is out of date, and that the drives are formatted some time ago. While you don't have to use GUID, it is a good idea eventually, or just reformat a drive.
