Problems with Saving to iPhoto

I recently install Elements 9 on my iMac.  I keep both unedited and edited photos in iPhoto, transferringthem to and from the Elements editor.  A few days ago, however, I started to get a different screen when I clicked the "save" icon after I'd finished editing. It offered different file formats and storage locations.  I had always saved in jpeg, and this had been done automatically; i.e., it was the default.  And by default as well, the editied photo was automatically returned to iPhoto just by clicking the "save" icon.  I must have inadvertently done something to alter this. 
There's a "iPhoto Library" location option under the current drop-down menu, but as iMac users know this is some sort of hidden graveyard.  It's not the "Events" location where the photo came from.
I can save it to the Finder and then import it to iPhoto, but this is a pain.  How do I restore it to the defaults?

Okay, good. Then try going into the PSE Editor preferences>Saving Files>On First Save and make sure it's set to save over the original.
Note that there is a big old bug in PSE 9/mac which means that just by opening this particular preference window PSE will stop automatically attaching the file extension to files you save. For iphoto it shouldn't matter, but for any image you open from the desktop you'll need to add the file extension manually when you save, from now on.
