Problems with selection tools

I am having trouble in CS6 with selecting a portion of my photo, with any of the tools- quick-selection, lasso or magnetic lasso. What happens is that once I have completed my selection, I get strange rectangles of 'marching ants' throughout my selection. These show up as different colours on the layer mask as well. When I first used quick selection it worked properly.
Is the tool somehow corrupted?

Thanks Trevor. It was both. After considering the issue, and using the tool in Elements on my laptop, I decided somehow the tool driver file had been corrupted, and did another install, which thankfully fixed the problem. I'm new to CS6 and was very surprised to have this kind of thing happen. I did a separate backup of my uncorrupted CS6 program files, and plan to do another backup this morning, just to be safe.
Fortunately, it's all good.

Problem with Selection Tool

I've used Adobe CS2 for awhile now - but after switching computers and installing Adobe CS2 Illustrator - the selection tool fails to work correctly.
Problem: When an object (such as a shape like a box) is selected with the selection tool (black arrow), I am unable to resize it. Same goes for text boxes.
To be more specific, when the selection tool is placed on the box's side it turns into a triangle arrow top without the the line attached to it. When I looked it up in help it said that the selection tool should only change to the triangle arrow top "when it is over a selected object or group." Under normal circumstances the selection tool changes to a double arrow and allows me to change the size of the box's side.
Any ideas???
Obviously not being able to adjust the size of objects makes using Abode difficult.

I'm trying to complete an illustration in inllustrator cs6. When I select the image there's no longer a bounding box that can be
manipulated (scaled, rotated etc.) like in previous versions of illustrator. I have to select an object on the path and then
select a tool from the tools palette to execute the simplest task. Please advise.

Cannot move objects with Selection Tool

Having problems moving a selcected with Selection Tool: the selection does not move.
Also cannot isolate imported picture as it always seems to be selected, even when deselected: Selection Tool always activates first layer even though I'm on another layer
Any new imported burshes i make up are not saved, even though file names shows up: only managed to save one brush
I nearly awlays have to re select stroke width everytime I use selection tools or re open file.
Are the problems due to compatibility issues with Mac OS and Illustrator CS4, as this new version is know to be very buggy in the industry.

I apologize for the unavailability of the site, owing to some mess by the webhost. This is an extract:
Up to Illustrator 10, almost all the preference settings were included in the AIPrefs/Adobe Illustrator Prefs file, and almost all issues with corrupted settings could be solved by deleting or moving it; in some rare cases, moving or deleting the folder holding the settings was required.
From Illustrator CS on, the preference settings have been spread over a number of files/subfolders so in many cases deleting the AIPrefs/Adobe Illustrator Prefs file is not enough: the easy solution is to move the whole folder rather than trying to figure out which file(s) may be corrupted; just deleting the folder without moving it first has proved fruitless in some cases.
Therefore, the cure all consists of the following steps:
1. Close Illustrator.
2. Make a search including hidden files and folders and including subfolders for the folder holding the preference files; the name of the folder depends on the Illustrator version, and the position of the folder depends on the OS version. There is one folder for each version and for each user so it is important to find the relevant one.
Up to version 10, the name of the folder is Adobe Illustrator [X],
From version CS on, the name of the folder is Adobe Illustrator [X] Settings.
[X] is the version number; up to 10, it is just a number, and above that the Creative Suite version number, CS, CS2, CS3, CS4, and so on, is used (the corresponding standalone versions still have simple numbers, CS is called 11, CS2 is called 12, CS3 is called 13, and CS4 is called 14, but the version numbers with CS are used in the folder name).
3. Either:
a) Create a subfolder and move all the contents into it; or
b) Move the whole folder to a place where you can find it again, such as the Desktop.
With both you may recover the contents of the folder by moving it back if the issue is not solved and get your preference settings back.
a) requires creation of the subfolder, but it makes recovery easier, especially if you create a shortcut to the preference settings folder, and you can skip the search if/when corruption occurs again.
You may delete the folder/contents subsequently.
4. If you have Windows Vista, restart Windows. If not, continue to 5 without delay.
5. Restart Illustrator, and see whether the issue is solved.
If the issue is solved, and you wish to keep as many of your preference settings as possible, you may move the folder back and repeat 3) - 5) for groups/individual files/subfolders until you have found the corrupted one(s). You may also start by only moving the AIPrefs/Adobe Illustrator Prefs file.

Our understanding:
Assume that both the forms are running from two different machines/instances, issuing commit at the same time. In this case, forms will start executing the statements written in ON-INSERT trigger, the moment POST command is executed. Though the commit is issued at the same time, according to oracle, only one of the request will be taken for processing first. Assume that calling form 1 is getting processed first.
So, it fetches the value available in COLUMN_1 of TABLE_A and locks the row from further select, update, etc. as SELECT...FOR UPDATE command is used (note that NOWAIT is not given, hence the lock will be released only when COMMIT or ROLLBACK happens) and proceed executing further INSERT statements. Because of the lock provided by the SELECT...FOR UPDATE command, the statements in calling form 2 will wait for the resource.
After executing the INSERT statements, the FORM_CHILD is called. The rows inserted in to TABLE_A will be queried and shown. The database changes will be committed when user closes the window (as COMMIT is issued in its WHEN-WINDOW-CLOSED trigger). Then the SELECT...FOR UPDATE lock will be released and calling form 2's statements will be executed.
Actual happenings or Mis-behavior:
Calling form 2 starts executing INSERT statements instead of waiting for SELECT...FOR UPDATE lock. Also, the value selected from TABLE_A.COLUMN_1 is same in both the calling forms, which is wrong.
The rows inserted into TABLE_B are having similar COLUMN_1 values in calling form 2 and they are fetched and shown in the called form FORM_CHILD.
Note that in calling form 2 also POST only is issued, but the changes posted there are accessible in calling form 1 also, which is wrong.
Kindly suggest us as to how to fix above problem. It will be much use, if you can send us the information regarding the behavior of Oracle Forms POST built-in also.

You have several problems:
1. On-Insert will ONLY run if you have created a new record in a base-table block. If you haven't done that, then the POST command will not cause it to run.
2. Select for update without a "no wait" will lock records for the first form, but when the second form tries this, it will hit the ORA-00054 exception, and will NOT wait. The only way you could make it wait is to issue an UPDATE sql command, which is not such a good way to go.
All POST does is issues SQL insert or update commands for any changes the user has made to records in a form's base-table blocks, without following with a Commit command.
Also understand that Commit is the same as Commit_Form, and Rollback is the same as Clear_Form. You should read up on these in the Forms help topics.

Problem with selecting text in Adobe Reader XI

Hi all, I am encountering a problem with Adobe Reader XI and it is very strange I could not find an alike issue on the internet so I guess I have to submit a question with it.
So here it is, I am using Adobe Reader XI Version 11.0.2, operating system: Windows 7. I do not know it starts from when but it has the problem with selecting text - to be copied in pdf documents. I ensure that the documents are not scanned documents but word-based documents (or whatever you call it, sorry I cannot think of a proper name for it).
Normally, you will select the text/paragraph you want to copy and the text/paragraph will be highlighted, but the problem in this case that I cannot select the text/paragraph, the blinking pointer (| <-- blinking pointer) will just stays at the same location so I cannot select/highlight anything to be copied. It happens oftenly, not all the time but 90%.
This is very annoying as my work involves very much with copying text from pdf documents, I have to close the pdf file and then open it again so I can select the text but then after the first copying or second (if I am lucky), the problem happens again. For a few text I have to type it myself, for a paragraph I have to close all opening pdf documents and open again so I could select the paragraph to copy. I ran out of my patience for this, it causes trouble and extra time for me just to copying those texts from pdf documents. Does this problem happen to anyone and do you have a solution for this? I would much appreciate if you could help me out, thank you!

Yeah, I totally agree, this is very strange. I have always been using Adobe Reader but this problem only occurred ~three months ago. It must be that some software newly installed I think. But I have no idea.
About your additional question, after selecting the texts and Ctrl + C, the texts are copied and nothing strange happens. It's just that right after I managed to copy the texts, it takes me a while to be able to select the texts again. For your information, I just tested to select the texts and then pressed Ctrl, the problem happened. And then I tried pressing C and then others letters, it all led to the problem.
I guess I have to stick with left-clicked + Copy until I/someone figure the source of this problem. Thanks a lot for your help!

Problem with: select 'c' as X from dual

Problem with 'select 'c' as X from dual'
I get 2 different results when I execute the above with SQLPlus (or java) depending on the instance I am connected to. For one instance the result is a single character and for the other the character is padded with blanks to 32 chars in the SQLPlus window (and java). Does anyone know what database setting causes this to happen? Is it a version issue ?

Using 9.2.0.6 On AIX 5.2 I get the single byte result:

If the databases are on different Oracle Homes you may want to check the sqlplus global logon files for any set commands.
If you executed the two sql statements from different OS directories you may also want to check your sqlpath for sqlplus .logon files.
Try issueing clear columns and repeating the statement. Are the results the same?

Problems with Pro Tools 8, is it the software?

Hello, I know this is "Apple Discussions", but since I'm using Pro tools 8 with the new macbook pro, I might get some answers here. I recently bought pro tools 8, I already have logic though, but wanted to be in the pro tools world too so, the thing is that every time I use Pro Tools 8 with the digi 003, the session Im working on will stop with just a few plugins, and man this happens a lot, on the other hand is that nothing happens when I use the digi 003 with Logic 8, I mean, I could have like 20 plugins and It would not stop at all. Can anyone identify with this problem with pro tools 8, Because people tell me that on pro tools 7.4 that doesnt happen at all.

PT8 is much better with plug ins than PT7x, but is not in the league of Logic. I am a huge PT fan and use both Logic and PT8, and as much as I love the look and superior interface of PT8, Logic is like an ugly old car that goes 200 MPH. It's a performance beast. I've had ridiculous amounts of plug ins in Logic with not a whimper from the program.
PT8 is much more sensitive to things like whether you are using Firewire drives to record to (as opposed to internal SATAs on a Mac Pro), and many 3rd party plugs cause PT much grief. For high track counts and lots of plug ins, Logic is still King Kong.

Trouble with Select tool in Acrobat 9

When I try to make a selection in a .pdf, the selection box is randomly sized and placed. For example, I select an area in the middle of the page, but when I let go of the mouse the selection box reduces in size and moves up/down the page. I am selecting an area with graphics, no text. This does not happen with all my .pdf documents, only certain ones that have been created within certain programs (e.g., ArcGIS 9.3 and geoPDF's).
The Snapshot tool works fine, but the resolution of the selection is much poorer than what I get with the Selection tool after I paste the selection into a Word document.
Is there a way to fix this, or change the settings on the Snapshot tool for better resolution so that I can use that tool instead?

I suspect that's not the problem, as I have no trouble selecting an area of any size I wish of images/objects most of the time. The Select tool, at least in Acrobat 9, allows you to do this.

Illustrator 2014 CC crashes (while dragging with selection tool)

What could be wrong?

Font Explorer X Pro 3.5.4 (plugin not installed for Illustrator CC)
I don't have any 3rd party plugins as far as I can tell
I've tried restarting the app, restarting the computer, clearing preferences, closing the laptop lid, closing other apps, removing plugins, etc. Restarting the computer actually worked for a few minutes, but then it started crashing again.
To reproduce:
1. Create a new file or open existing.
2. Create a square.
3. Drag with the selection tool.
4. App crashes.
I've seen many other threads with the same problem, but none of them were solved.

Problem with move tool? (Win 7)

On Photoshop CS4 , everytime I select the move tool and decide to move an object among a layer , it moves the object off screen , making it difficult to bring it back to the canvas to move . I know it isn't jumping layers , because only the object inside of one layer i moved , but ... am I the only one that has this problem ? How do I fix it ?
It doesn't only have this problem with the move tool , but with the text tool , marquee tools , and the brush tool , as well . The text tool would jump off screen , the marquee tool would position the marquee somewhere other than where I clicked it to be , and the brush tool would sometimes jump out of the brush outline . Can someone help ?

You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.
A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.

Problem with Eraser tool in PSE7

I have the PSE7 (using in Windows Vista) and have been using it for scrapbooking since early May09. I've had no real problems with it up until yesterday when my eraser tool stopped working. The magic eraser will still work, but the regular eraser will no longer erase. I've tried going out of the program and coming back in with no difference. I've tried rebooting the computer hoping it would reset but no difference. Has anyone else had this problem or does anyone have any ideas on how to fix it? I would greatly appreciate any help as I "can't live without my eraser tool"! ;0)

If you have a tablet, the mouse and pen can not both be on (or touching) the tablet at the same time.
If you don't have a tablet or the above isn't causing the issue, the next thing to do is reset the eraser tool. With the eraser selected, click the eraser icon in the options bar...not the tool box...and select "reset tool" from the context menu.
Item "A" in the diagram of the options bar in this help index page is the tool icon which houses the reset tool(s) context menu.

If the above does not fix the problem, the next step is to reset the application preference files.
To reset all of your Photoshop preferences, hold down the
Control+Alt+Shift (Windows), Command+Option+Shift (Mac) keys as you launch the application.
EDIT: You have to press those three keys immediately after you launch the editor portion of the application to get the delete user settings dialog to come up. If you don't get a dialog, you did not press those three keys fast enough.

Problem with lasso tool in PSE10!!

Will start using lasso tool and then the picture will flicker and the lassoo tool will not function to continue with the selection. Has worked ok in the past but not now. Have tried reset tool but did"t work out problem. Why the flicker of the picture as this throughs the alignment of the lassoo off and you cannot continue with the outline. Very frustrating!!

99jon sorry to report that I went into my lassoo tool this morning and I am still having a problem with it. I tried hitting the info on the picture until not responding appears on upper left of windows and went ahead and began my selection with the tool and bam the screen flickered and ruined the alignment of the lassoo and rendered it non functional. would it be better if I tried a re-inastll of pse 10? The above technique did work late yesterday,but not now. Thanks!!

Problems with selections in cs5

Hey there, Recently i started noticing some weird behaviours that didn't happen before involving selections in photoshop cs5.
the first thing i noticed was that when i made a selection with the lasso on any given layer and hit transform, the tool didn't automatically select the active pixels like it did before. instead, the transformation box was around the whole selection I made even if the borders didn't contain active pixels. this is a really big problem for me because when I have my objects set in a certain place and I want to transform them in that position, thay move around a little bit beacuse the selection is not constrained to the shape. I was wondering if this is some new feature in cs5 that can be changed. or some old feature that I accidentally toggled on.
My second problem is that when I'm making a selection either with the marquee tool or the lasso tool then I swiitch to the move tool to move the selected content and then switch back to a selection tool to remove just a part of thet previous selection so that I can move the rest of the content, appart from deselecting that area, it erases the pixels contained in the deselection. and I just want to remove that selection, not delete the pixels. I'm also wondering if this is a function that can be modified or if I have a bigger problem.
Any help will be deeply appreciated.

One workaround might be to switch to the Move Tool and hit the left and right arrow in sequence.
Ad 2)
One workaround might be to enter and leave Quick Mask Mode by hitting Q twice.

Problem with Marquee Tool

I'm having a problem in Photoshop 7.0 where I can't see the borders of the selected area while dragging the cursor. Once I release the mouse button I can see the borders OK, but not while dragging. This makes precision selections difficult. It seem to happen with any tool used to select an area i.e. marquee, lasso, pen, etc. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
