Problems with Sony DCR-SR100

Help!
Does anyone have this camera and has tried to import video to iMovie??? I can't figure out how to do it. I realize that this camera has only a USB jack, and no firewire, but regardless there has got to be a way to do it.
Thank you for your help!!!

Hi There,
We've just bought Sony's DCR-SR30E (European version of your SR40). I chose the camera primarily for it's recording capacity and ease of use. I was disappointed to find that:
a) Sony don't supply a Mac version of their ImageMixer editing software with the camera.
b) Neither iMovie or Final Cut Pro would import the mpeg2 video from the camera.
No to be discouraged I found a link to ImageMixer1.5 for Mac in small-print, in the camera's handbook, here's what the Wikipedia has to say about the application: "ImageMixer also has an editing software, but most users claim that it is incredibly hard to use, and is almost obsolete when compared to other movie editing programs such as Windows Movie Maker and iMovie." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ImageMixer
http://www.imagemixer.com/e/sony/index.htm
So that leaves me with no option but to forget about editing and burn the mpeg files straight to DVD/VCD or, as suggested above, convert the camera files into a format recognised by iMovie or FCP.
Step up FfmpegX http://homepage.mac.com/major4/
A clever little shareware app that acts as an OSX front-end GUI to some powerful Unix video encoders that where inherited from OSX's Linux predecessors or are available to install as open source codecs. With this baby converting from Sony's mpeg2 files to DV files that open in FCP, is a relatively simple drag-and-drop process.
But wait their's another challenge! The mpeg2 files generated by the camera are 'muxed', the audio and video are multiplexed into a single track. Muxed DV video can be imported into FCP but once you render your edited project you loose the sound. In iMovie even the converted muxed DV files can't be imported.
Now FfmpegX has in its tools tab a de-muxing utility that will split apart the 2 audio and 1 video track from the original file into 3 separate mpeg2 files. Thats as far as I've got I'm open to recommendations on how to proceed.
As this conversion process is getting more complex all the time I'm looking for a shell script that will automate the demuxing and conversion to DV of the video track.
Also, would you use an audio conversion utility to get the stereo mpeg2 audio files into PCM format them add them as separate tracks to the DV movie? Or import all 3 files into FCP and recombine them on the timeline?
Any help you can give will be welcomed as I'm getting in over my head here

  • Problem with reading mpeg files from Sony DCR-SR100 30GB Handycam

I just purchased a new Sony DCR-SR100 Handycam.
I can upload successfully to my desktop (PowerBook G4)via a USB cable.
I have all the latest updates for iLife, iMovie, Final Cut Pro and Quicktime. None of those applications will open the imported mpeg.
When trying to import the file to the iMovie application I get the following error message:
"The file could not be imported. The file M2UOOOO4.MPG can't be imported; Quicktime couldn't parse it: -2048"
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Igor,
    welcome to the  board
... hm, sorry to say, but:
iMovie is a video edit app meant to work with firewire connected miniDV camcorders
you try to teach the old dog new tricks... just one kind of mpegs can be handled with iM, that is mp4, imported via iPhoto6 (some stillcams can record a kind of "movin' images"...)
sooo, you need to convert your stuff...
mpegs are meant for playback only, they are a delivery format (thanks, Lennart, for this phrase).. editing/processing such files, needs to demuxx them => 3rd party tools...
there's a very good and free solution:
    Streamclip (free)
not using a miniDV camcorder, you miss the convenience of the iApps...

  • Sony-DCR SR100

I bought the new Sony DCR SR100...it has no firewire port...it has only USB for downloading video (it is a tapeless camera...it is a videocamera that records to hard drive)...i can't download to my power book G 4since Apple program uses only download via fire wire...any ideas? is there a 3rd party application?

Okay, one thing at a time..
"..You may be able to download its videos into iPhoto, as that now imports the videos which digital stills cameras can shoot.." ..If you have the latest iMovie, you should also have the latest version of a program called "iPhoto".
It's primarily a program for downloading, storing and editing photos. However, the latest version(s) will also download movies (..automatically..) from digital stills cameras: cameras which normally take photographs, but (..on many cameras..) also shoot video clips onto a little 'chip' or removable card inside the camera. (..Just as many movie cameras also shoot stills..)
If you connect your camera to your PowerBook via the USB cable, and switch the camera to Play mode, and then to Stop, and you then start the "iPhoto" program on your PowerBook, the program may - I haven't tried it - see that the camcorder is connected, and may look inside it for a folder which holds videos, and may then offer to import the video into iPhoto.
If it does, and if you let the program import whatever it finds, it may then create little 'thumbnail' pics inside iPhoto to represent these videos.
You could then select one, or more, of these clips, and click on 'File' and 'Export' in iPhoto, and export one or more of these to your 'Movies' folder, ready for editing with iMovie. (..I'd explain how to move these videos to the 'Movies' folder, or how to edit them from the 'Pictures' folder, where they may be sitting, but I won't bother with that just now. Let's just do one step at a time..)
If iPhoto doesn't recognise the camcorder, or the movie clips sitting in the camcorder, then Plan B:
"..with this new camera, i plug it in...and an icon appears on the desktop but no program opens...if i open the icon, there is a collection of folders (none of which make sense to me.." ..Good, so far..
I don't have this camera, so I don't know the names of the folders you see when you double-click on the icon to "open" it. But here's how to find out which items are - probably - your movies, and how to "drag'n'drop" them (..i.e; how to move them from the camcorder to your Apple..) very easily.
    (a) Open each folder, and look for anything which ends in .AVI or .MPG or .MPEG ..those are the likely names of movie files. So anything called, for instance, "D0001397.MPG" or maybe "D0002738.AVI" is probably a movie. If you see a name like that, click once on it to highlight it, and then hold down the 'Apple' key (..just to the left of the Spacebar at the bottom of the keyboard on your Apple..) and jab the letter "i". That combination of keys will then "get Info" about that file.
A window should pop up showing details about that file, such as the "Kind" of file it is, and - more importantly - its "Size". If the Size is only small, something like, say, "12KB", then it's too tiny to be a movie. If the size is more like "300KB" or bigger, then it probably IS a movie!
(..Likely sizes go up from, say, about 200KB or more, all the way to 999KB and then change to 1MB or more, such as, say, 8.7MB. Sizes then go beyond 999MB to 1 or more GB..)
If it ends in .MPG or .MPEG or .AVI and is a large size, then all the other files which have the same endings (..such as .MPG or .MPEG or .AVI..) will also be movies. You could then - with that file selected (highlighted) - just drag it across to your 'Movies' folder (which should be showing on the left-hand side of the computer screen) by holding down the mouse button on your PowerBook and dragging your finger across the 'trackpad' area, then releasing your finger off the mouse button when the file's name is sitting on top of the word 'Movies'. That's "drag'n'drop". The file will then be copied from the camcorder, via the USB cable, into the Movies folder on your PowerBook!
You could then select all of the similarly-named items, such as .MPG or .MPEG or .AVI, by clicking on one of them, then holding down the 'Apple' key and clicking in turn on each of the others ..if they're separated by other-named files in between.. and that will select all of those files, one by one.
But if all the similarly-named files are all next to each other, you could just click on the first one, then hold down the Shift key, and click on the last one. Then all the files between and including the first and last will all be selected!
Then just "drag'n'drop", as before, and all those chosen files will be copied at the same time!
..But maybe, before copying them all, just try playing the first one which appears to be a movie file ..just to be sure. You can do this by holding down the "ctrl" key (bottom-left) while you click on the file's name (..eg; "D0001397.MPG" or "D0002738.AVI"..) and when the window pops up saying "Help - Open - Open With - Get Info.." etc, slide your mouse down to "Open With" and then choose "QuickTime", and maybe the file will play its video. If it does - all's OK! ..Drag'n'drop them all, and they'll be playable, but will probably need further fiddling-around-with to make them play - with sound - in iMovie. To do that "fiddling-around" you'll probabaly need to "..download and use this MPEG2 Works program to convert the Sony videos into an iMovie-compatible format!.."
And to download it, just click on those blue(?) words "use this MPEG2 Works program" above, and that'll take you to the web page from where the program can be downloaded.
I haven't written (b) because this reply is long enough for now. Maybe after I've had breakfast I'll write siggestions (b) and (c).
Meanwhile, other people may give their suggestions, which may be even better than these!..
P.S: Matti suggests an alternative to MPEG2 Works, called MPEG Streamclip - click on that blue link - (..which I'd forgotten about..) in his nearby post in this topic, here.

  • Capturing Problem with Sony TRV330

Capturing problem with Sony digital8 trv330.
I recently purchased the above camcorder from eBay for capturing old 8mm/Hi8 tapes for editing purpose. The camcorder set to A/V -> DV OUT connected with Firewire to my Power G4 and the Easy Setup was DV-NTSC. The playback on the capture window looks OK except there were no timecode in the Timecode Duration Field and the Current Timecode Field (both shown 00:00:00:00) during playback but there was timedoce in the camcorder viewfinder. When I click the Capture Now button, the capturing window show up with message “waiting for timecode ….”. I have to click “esc” to stop the capturing operation. I trash the Preferences and Ran the Disk Utility without success. I also tried the Easy Setup with DV-NTSC DV Converter as well as DV-NTSC 32Khz, nothing work.
My set up is: Mac Power G4 version 10.5.5/ F.C.E. 4.0.1/ QT7.5.5/ Startup 160 GB-89 GB available/ Scratch 350GB-277GB available. Folks, I need help. Thanks everybody.

Hi, I have a similar problem. I am trying to digitize my 8mm tapes (via firewire) using final cut express (4.0.1). Using easy setup I use DV-NTSC DV Converter and do capture now. I transfer the entire tape but notice the audio is out of synch with the video. This problem gets worse throughout the transfer process. When I use the esc to complete the transfer I get the error " The audio sample rate of one or more of your captured media files does not match the sample rate on your source tape....." So after searching around it is recommended I change the audio sample rate to 32 kHz option. However, when I do this using easy setup and picking DV-NTSC 32kHz I cannot use capture now because I have no timecode and so the window comes up with the message "waiting for timecode". Since there is no timecode this option does not work. Any suggestions? Thanks, Dan

  • Sharing with Sony DCR-PC9E -PAL

    HI,
I've just tried to share from imovie HD to my Sony DCR-PC9E-Pal and it says that my Firewire cable is not connected. It is, and have had no problem with my old iMovie. I have updated the software and still a have this problem. It does show that it is reading the device but cannot export to camera.
Any suggestions or direct me to archives if that might assist.
    Best
    Tony

no, that doesn't matter - I'm using iMHD5 + an old Sony TRV14 - works like a charm...- but no export , it's an European model.... (without "E" in its type)
be sure, you have all updates installed…
    try this:
IMovie can no longer export to camera after installing Final Cut
    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n93804
or, quit iM, launch Garageband, play a few notes, quit GB, launch iM agian (that very strange procedure is known here as "Garageband Crazy Fix" )
    and, finally, something about Sonys:

  • FCE compatability with SONY DCR-HC28

Hi - I recently bought a SONY DCR-HC28 to download a lot of footage into a project, but
Final Cut Express doesn't recognise it. Has anyone got these 2 working together ? Any tips ?
    Thank you
    James

No - I've used Final Cut a lot before, without this problem.
I bought FCE recently, and this is my 1st experience with it -
without managing to connect any camera to it.
I'm hooking a firewire cable to the computer, making sure the computer is restarted, switching the camera mode to play/edit, going through the
'easy setup' sequence: NTSC Firewire Basic (as well as the other NTSC
permutations), then capture - no good, then view - refresh A/V devices....
    still nothing...........
will try the 2 suggestions you made. Thanks a lot.

  • Problems with Sony NX3 AND Sony Z5 avi files

Very, very strange problem. I will try to give as much detail as possible so bear with me.
I currently edit with two different computers. One uses Premier 3 the other uses Premiere 6. I shoot with several different cameras, but for purposes of this discussion I will talk only about the Sony Z5 and the Sony NX3. I capture my footage on a CF card (Z5) or SD card (NX3)
All HD footage shoot with the Z5 and/or the NX 3 works fine on either system. However any SD footage that is over a certain length will not import into premiere 6 (if it's from the Z5) or the length of the footage will only be 2:37 (on footage from the NX3). However the SD footage from either camera will play perfectly on the system with Premiere 3.
Any ideas on what my problem with premiere 6 is?

I caputured footage from my ZU1 yesterday that encountered time code breaks. They should not have been there. My only thought is that the breaks occured when I shut the camera down and started recording later.
Maybe... I assumed it was user error... I was wondering if perhaps a setting in the camera was causing the breaks when the camera powers down.

  • Importing DV  via  USB  with Sony DCR-HC36

I used two cameras recently to get different angles on the same shoot. One was the Sony DCR-HC36. I have also connected an external drive to have more space. But since I am using a MacBook Pro I only have one fire wire port so i am trying to use the USB port to import the film. Can I do this?
Would appreciate any suggestions as to how I can solve this problem.
    B

You can't use the USB from the camera. You should try daisy-chaining the camera through the drive. If the drive has two FW ports you should be able to do that.

  • Final cut express 4 with Sony DCR VX2000E

When I connect my camcorder Sony DCR VX2000E through the firewire 400 socket I get the message it is not connected or switched on. I can't capture any video.
    Who can help ?

Nobody with the amount of information you've provided. What OS, what version of QT, what drives are you using, how are they and the camera connected, what settings are on the media, what settings are you using in FCE, and does the system profiler see the camera?

  • Battery Problem with Sony Xperia Z1 Compact

I have a very uncomfortable problem with my Z1C. Each time I use apps too long time (5 minutes), my telephone is off because of poor battery. I don't know if the problem comes from the battery or from the new version of Lollipop. By the way, I have allready reinitialised my telephone and uninstall all my games but nothing has changed. For exemple, if I launch a video on  you tube  or if I use the screen mirror with mty TV, the telephone is switch off  quickly and if I charge it, the battery comes back to 100% very quick ! This problem is very important since I use the last version of Lollipop. It's very uncomfortable and I am seriously thinking of changing of telephone if I can't solve this problem soon...

I'd suggest that you do a PC Companion phone repair, this will do a clean installation of the latest firmware and will also wipe your internal memory.
Open PC companion -> Support zone -> Phone/tablet software update -> Repair my phone/tablet (blue link style). Follow the steps given, do not connect your phone until prompted to press volume down while plugging USB cable.

  • FD Trinitron WEGA KV-30HS420 problem with Sony Blu-ray players

I have a Sony FD Trinitron KV-30HS420 television, which has worked very well over the last 11 years or so.  I've owned a Sony BDP-S780 Blu-ray player for a few years, and it has worked very well with my TV.  I believe I updated the firmware on the blu-ray player a month or two ago, to the M07.R.0631 version from December 2014.  When I plugged a USB flash drive into the player - one I've used several times before successfully - the screen went black.  The only difference I can think of is that I created folders on the USB flash drive, and put the mp4s into the folders.  I think I may have had a similar problem with the blu-ray player a year or two ago when I also used folders on the USB drive, but I was able to fix the problem by unplugging the player and rebooting.  That did not resolve this issue. Now, if I try to turn on my player, which is hooked to my TV via HDMI, the "Sony Blu-ray" symbol appears as usual, then the thin blue line that stretches partially accross the screen horizontally, but at the stage where the screen will usually flicker and the blue line will expand to fill the whole length of the 16:9 screen, the screen instead turns black.  It appears the player is still functioning (as I'll explain below), but the TV is no longer able to process the signal. I spent several hours with Sony tech support going through everything - checking the connections, swapping HDMI cables, lowering the resolution on the player, and changing other player settings, but I still have the same problem.  If I hook the player up to a newer Vizio HD television, everything works fine - which is why the player seems to be functioning ok.  If I hook my HD DVR to my television, it continues to work fine as well - so I don't think it's a problem with my HDMI connection on my TV.  It appears to be a communication issue between the blu-ray player and the TV. I have been meaning to buy a second blu-ray player anyway, so I purchased a Sony BDP-S5500, thinking that might resolve the issue.  But the exact same thing happens when I plug it into my Sony TV.  That blu-ray player also works fine with the newer Vizio TV.
I spent several additional hours with Sony support making sure there wasn't an issue with the new Blu-ray player.  This included about an hour of hold time, and being forwarded to over 4 different support staff, including an "escalated" forward to a "Level 5" support staff.  I had to repeat the issue several times to the staff, including Yeng (Employee #C8WZ), Charlie (Employee #C75Y), and Mel (Employee #C822).  The first staff I spoke with - Eric - told me he'd call back the next day after checking compatibility issues.  Neither he, nor any other Sony staff, called back after 2 days, so I called support again - they had no record of my conversation with Eric, and I had to start the whole process over again.  The Sony phone support so far has been very disappointing, to say the least. Any help would be appreciated.  I'm guessing that by plugging in the USB with the folder structure, it somehow triggered a setting on the older BDP-S780 blu-ray player to use an updated setting - a setting that is common with the software on the newer blu-ray player.  Has anyone else had a similar issue with one of the FD Trinitron WEGA tvs?  Thanks for your help.

Your older TV is not capable of displaying either 1080P or any progressive program at tthat. On a standard definition (SD) non-progressive CRT like yours, blu-ray is a complete waste. Even if it could accept the signal, it wouldn't look any better.

  • MDP to HDMI display problem with Sony Bravia

    Hi,
I've tried without success to connect my 2010 MBP to my Sony Bravia KDL-40W2000 using a Griffin Video Display Converter and an HDMI cable.
The TV isn't displaying a picture and no audio is transmitted either.
When the Griffin adapter is connected, I see an additional Display preference window (titled 'SONY TV'), but whichever options I choose in that window, I can't get anything to come up on the TV. I've tried all the resolutions possible and have experimented with turning mirroring on and off. Every combination ends up with the same result: the display is fine on the MBP but nothing appears on the TV.
I've looked through the TV's menus but there seem to be only a few relevant settings to tweak, and tweaking them hasn't helped. Sony's support team told me that their TVs aren't designed to accept HDMI input from computers(!), which just doesn't seem right given that others have had no problems in connecting up their kit to Sony TVs.
I know the HDMI cable is fine as it works when connected to the TV via another device.
I'd guess that the Griffin adapter is faulty, although if this were the case I wouldn't have expected the extra Display preference window to have appeared.
Is anyone able to diagnose the problem before I try to get the Griffin adapter replaced?
    Thanks,
    John

    Hi John,
Did you fix your problem? I have an uncannily similar problem. I bought my MBP in December '09, and recently bought a Neet mini HDMI adaptor (http://www.amazon.co.uk/DisplayPort-AUDIO-v1-3b-adapter-cable/dp/B002SKJKE2/ref= sr126?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1282087795&sr=8-26) and HDMI cable. But I can get nothing at all through to the Sony TV through it. My Sony TV is KDL-40s3000. I went into the Preferences - Display and it didnt detect the Sony there, and in the Sony menu, under Settings - Set-Up - HDMI Set-Up, it never detects any device either. Under the channel on the Sony I chose for this, it does say "out of range". Perhaps that has something to do with it. Any solutions you found, please let me know!

  • Aperture 3 problem with Sony NEX-5n raw files

    Hi all,
I have a Sony Alpha NEX-5n camera and my brother advised to take the pictures in raw format in order to keep all the information the sensors gathered when making the picture. The problem I have is that the software Sony provides with the camera does not allow me to convert the raw files into other formats. I downloaded Aperture trial because my camera was listed in Apple webpage as one of the models that can use raw files with Aperture. My problem is that every time I try to import the raw files, Aperture tell me that it doesn't support the format, and I cannot open the photos in raw and therefore I cannot work with them. I can work with the JPEG, but that is not what I want.
I wanted to buy Aperture, but there is no point for me to do that if I cannot work with the raw files. Maybe it is the trial version, but then Apple would be posting the wrong information in the webpage and therefore should remove my camera from the list (it doesn't say anything about apgrades or updates).
Does anyone else have the same problem? Can anyone confirm that once I buy it, Aperture works with the raw files even if I have to update it?
Thank you very much. I am a Apple fan, but if it doesn't work, I will buy Lightroom or Corel even if they are more expensive.
    Savarena

    Hello Savarena,
Try to install the RAW compatibility update: Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.9
    - if is possible to do that with the Trial Version. This update supports your camera.

  • Problem with Sony NEX-5 camera raw images in Aperture 3.

Aperture 3 cannot says the RAW files from my Sony Alpha NEX-5 camera are an "unsupported image format". Aperture 3 is a full new copy (not an upgrade) purchased 10 days. My mac is an iMac 3.08 GHz Intel 2 Core, running 10.5.8, and with 4GB of 800 MHz RAM. All software upgrades have been performed.
Aperture 3 says RAW files from my camera are supported. I downloaded directly from the camera by USP in the correct USP setting in the camera , i.e. 'mass storage mode'. Preview can see the .arw files but iPhoto and AP3 cannot. I've read that a possible fix is to down load via a Firewire 800 card reader. I'd rather avoid that as they cost about AU$170 - which is quite an impost when AP3 just cost me AU$249.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Karl McC

    Thank you e2photo.
Yesterday I found a similar post about the same issue with a new Canon camera. They fixed the problem by copying the files from the camera to a folder on the computer. Then they loaded the files into AP3 from the folder. Great news; it worked!!
Thank you for your thoughts on iMovie as I had not tried to download movie content yet. You prompted me to do a little trial. No problem. iMovie 08 read the ACVHD movie and it looks great.
    Kind regards,

  • Is iMovie 11 compatible with Sony DCR HC90?

I've got ImageMixer loaded on the machine, and I'm using the firewire cable, but iMovie just won't recognize that there is a camera connected.

I have a Sony Handycam DCR-HC52 with a Firewire cable attached to a MBP and I am glad that AppleMan 1958 is on the case, so to speak, because I am experiencing the same symptoms.  iMovie '11 is not recognizing the camera as an import source.  Unless the Apple Support community can solve this one, my next possible way to transfer the content will be to play the Mini-DV source through a LCD TV and record the video and ambient audio with my Nikon CoolPix digital camera.  I have already established that I can transfer video files captured with my CoolPix to iMovie (by dragging and dropping them from the iPhoto Event Library).  Despite the obvious reduction in image and sound quality, it could work.
