Problems with terminal application - characteristic HD noises

Hi,
I hope you can advise me for the rather obscure problem I am having. I have installed Darwin ports and am using the python app hellanzb, which is an automated usenet downloader. The problem that I have is that now, when starting up the terminal for the first time, quitting the terminal or opening a new shell, the system grinds to a halt for approx. 30s, during which time the HD spins in a consistent way. (dot-d-dot, dot-d-dot, dash, dash as it happens). Now I can understand this happening if the python app is already working but the fact that the behaviour is repeated when the hellanzb app is not working is confusing me.
The obvious solution would be to get rid of darwin ports but some of the programs that darwin ports enables have been handy to me (the R stats program).
Any ideas or has anyone else encountered this minor (but annoying glitch)?

Trashing the preference file brought up the terminal window much faster - it defaulted to the tcsh. I was previously using the bash shell and when I changed the shell in the terminal preferences file, the hard disk whirring pattern described above started again and the terminal prompt took ~15s to appear, something that was instantaneous in the tcsh.
I guess that this mean that the problem lies with loading the bash shell. Is there a tcsh equivalent to .bashrc? I have been using bash because my friend told me that it was better than tcsh. Would the best option be to switch to tcsh?

Problem with Terminal.app - unable to input '^' (Shift + 6)

I'm experiencing a strange problem with Terminal since this morning: I'm not able to input symbol '^' (Shift + 6) in any terminal application. Both Terminal.app and iTerm.app show the same problem. I'm able to input '^' in all other applications, as you can see, without any problem. Is it something related to key bindings? Anybody with similar problems?

What terminal emulation are you using? Which shell? I suggest you look into whatever terminal emulation you are using. Try googling for the type of terminal emulation you are using to see if that sheds any light on this issue.

N95 problem with ''Help'' application

Dear all,
I've update recently my N95 with new software release 20.0.015, but the problem with help application is not resolved...The problem is the following: when I try to open HELP I receive the error message MEMORY FULL, but my free RAM is 23/24 MB and the free memory on the device is 112 MB. Can you help me to resolve this problem?

I have the same problem - no in any applications or using the Help application itself.
Of possible interest ?>: is a 'help folder' I have with a name displayed in the Help application as 4x boxes.
Using: -Menu -Tools -Utilities -Help
...I have an odd looking file listed at the end (after 'ZipManager' & before '3-D ringing tones'). The name is displaying as 4 x boxes - presumably non display characters ?>
Is this folder on all N95s ? (i.e even those with a working Help) ?
Anyone know how/where to locate this folder ?

Try downloading another app - any free app is fine. See if that resets the other apps and allows them to work again.

I have a problem with my application update since i updated to iOS6

I'm having problems with JavaFX applications run on raspberry pi. I did all the steps of the videos of the course: overclocking, uncommented what I had to uncomment about the framebuffer but Exceptions are still happening. The Fireworks demo example does not work. Someone went through this problem? Java applications are ok. As the versions of java in netbeans project and also on "properties" and they are all JDK 8. So if someone can give a hint, I'm very grateful!

Email settings problem - your device encountered a problem with this application's server

Hi,
I'm getting the following message
"your device encountered a problem with this application's server" when I try to add an email in Email settings. This problem is occurring since 15-NOV-2010. I'm using O2 service provider. i've called them and reported this problem. O2 service provider did all possible troubleshooting and they adviced everything is ok on their side. They don't know why am I getting this message.
This is really frustrating and not able to add an email or edit my existing email settings. I did reboot my handheld more than 10 times but no luck. Please can anyone help me to sort this problem out. PLEASE HELP

I am having the same problem since last 2 days. I have a BB curve 8900 with O2. I called them up today morning. They said that the problem is at their end and some of the customers are getting affected. Luckly, I still can access the setup using webclient.
Hopefuly they will resolve this issue soon.

Problems with EJB Application with many CMP's

I had been working with a Sun engineer in reference to a major problem with a large CMP Module with over 120 cmp beans with many relationships. It was filed as a bug and just recently they released Update 2. I installed this update and now I can build our complete application in Sun 1 Studio 5. Now, there seems to still be a problem in the application module. If we create the application and add our session module, cmp module and web module there is not problems. I can create the ear file and deploy this to S1AS7. Now if I exit the IDE the next time I return the Application shows that there is a error (red error indicator). I cannot expand the application to see the modules. The same problem was in S1S4 but it was not that big of a deal as it allowed you to add the modules back in, save and export the ear. But, now in S1S5 you cannot do a single thing with this module. Even the menu items to delete are not available. The only thing we can to is create the application again and add the modules etc. Also, if I right click on the application and select view error information it does nothing so I cannot even see the error that is causing this trouble. Also, we know it is something with the application and the cmp module because we can add just the web moduel and session module, save, exit and return and the application is fine. It is only when we add in the cmp module that after saving and returning things are wacked.
Has anyone else seen this problem with the application?

I have found the error. In the ide log it showed that the entity expansion limit was reached for the DOM parser. I added this to my ide.cfg and all works well now.

Apperently the limit is 64000 and with the very large modules it was just not enough.

Problems with Installer application

Hi!
Lately I've been having problems with Installer with several packages. Some pkgs install just fine, but others fail whenever they try to run some preflight or preinstall scripts.
My mac is new MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo shipped with 10.4.8. I think these problems might have started after some late Security Updates.
I've been doing maintenance tasks prediotically as well as repaired permissions and disk in single user mode. I've also tried to copy Installer from my Tiger install DVD's but with no luck.
Either system.log, console.log nor CrashReports don't show anything. Installer's own log just announces that install failed while running presomething-scripts. But when I run these scripts manually from Terminal, they work just fine without any errors.
I'm hopeless. I wish won't have to see the day coming when I'll have to do that so well known regular windows-like format and reinstall procedure with OS X. Sadly there's several packages I need to have installed, so if reinstall is the only solution please throw some backup and restore tips at me.

The first package I noticed this problem with was DivX for Mac installer. The Installer's log pointed that installation failed while running the preflight script. The script is pretty long, but mainly just removes older version of DivX libraries and applications and when I run it from the shell, it works just fine.
I've also tried downloading it again along with another versions, but all the Installer fail at the same point. I've also tried to find some help to this problem from their forums, but it seems to me that I'm the only one having this problem.
Another package which I found failing is Missing Sync for Windows Mobile. I just ordered HTC TyTN -phone and tried to get Missing Sync working. Missing Sync itself installs correctly, but there's a application which comes bundled with MS called Mark/Space Notebook. The installer is multipackage installer and during the installation of M/S Notebook it fails while running preinstall script. The preinstall script is really simple, like this:

I haven't yet tried these packages on other Macs, but I'm positive they will work just fine. I believe that the problem must be either the Installer app, or something in my shell environment that makes it fail. Any ideas what could it be?
When searching help from this forum first to this problem I ran into post that indicated the same problem and the fix for that was recreating admin/root account. Although I am pretty familiar with *BSD and UNIX systems, I didn't quite get what was meant by that. As far as I know the root account can't be easily recreated?

HP T410 All-In-One (H2W21AA) serious RDP problem with terminal server

firmware that was out-of-the-box got some graphical problems with RDP, so i updated the Smart Zero Core Image to the latest Z6A44019 Rev. 1 (11 dec 2013). Graphical problem gone, but new, much more unpleasant problem emerged.
This thin client is connected to Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, all updates are up-to-date. Terminal Server.
the steps:
- i connect from my machine (W7SP1x64 with latest updates) via RDP (mstsc.exe or tsmmc.mmc - doesn't matter) to the terminal server
- i open up the remote desktop services manager, right click on the user that's connected from the T410
- i hit "remote control" button
- for a moment i see some bits of user's desktop, but in less than a second my RDP session drops with the following error:

the problem is not present for the rest on the terminal users (that are connected from a unix thin clients), i remote control their session without any issues.
Please help me. We are building a new office and planning it for using PoE on every workdesk with your T410 Thin Client. But the fact that i can't manage them remotely brings me a lot of grief.

when i remote control session, it connects and works for some time, but at some point (which can be even a second from connection) it disconnects, throws me back to my admin session, and on the client side of t410 the following message appears:

Problem with Terminal on launch

All right, I guess this best fits into UNIX discussions, though it's more of a problem with the terminal itself.
Recently, I wrote a relatively simple application with Xcode. I wanted to see the output of the app, and since I was too lazy to open up Xcode or browse around for the file and I knew that I only had to use the up arrow in terminal to launch it, that being the last command, I did so. Everything worked as expected. Until the next launch of terminal, that is.
When I next launched, Terminal seemed to have automatically entered that command. As a result, the app executed immediately without any input from me, and then Terminal displayed Process Completed. I relaunched. Same thing. I used shiftcmdn to enter a new command. I did only cd, hoping that it at least wouldn't bother to display the application's output (rather long) on next launch. So now, when I launch terminal, it immediately enters "cd; exit".
What I see is exactly as follows:
Last login: (Date) (time) on ttyp1
cd; exit (this is sporadic. It's sometimes here, and sometimes...not.)

Again, this all happens immediately without any input from me.
I can't really do anything useful in terminal at present. I've tried opening new terminal windows, relaunching, logging out and in, rebooting, resetting, ctrl-c...the works, and I don't know what else to try.

This is common? How does it happen?
I don't recall exactly how it happens - something to so with how you launch the app, or save a window setting or something. What I do know is that if you search these (and other) boards you'll find a lot of people reporting the same thing - of course 'a lot' is a relative term, but it happens often enough that I knew the solution even though I've never been affected myself, either.

Strange problem with desktop applications randomly freezing

Hi guys,
Over the past two weeks I've noticed that a few, very specific applications, have been crashing horrifically for me. Specifically, they're Firefox, Chromium and Eclipse and anything else powered by Java as well. I found the Eclipse issue people talked about on here regarding the upgrade to Xulrunner, but they only partially fix my problem.
What happens is the applications will randomly freeze, completely. The gui locks up and the window becomes a grey box, and the only way I can get rid of the window is with kill -9.
I've tried figuring out what's wrong, but honestly I have no idea. I'm running 32bit Arch, with a Nvidia 8800GTX card on the official binary drivers, using Openbox. Everything as of the time of this post is up to date throug Pacman.
Also, with the amount of problems I'm seeing on Gnome3 in here, what about creating a temporary sub-forum to hold them all? It would certainly tidy this one up a lot.

My system has started "freezing". Actually, usually when I'm browsing the net, Chromium stops loading pages. Conky stops updating, and usually I can't switch to another programs. I can't start xkill from menu, menu opens but nothing starts. If I run "ls" etc in Terminal, nothing happens
I can however control+alt+F1 to CLI, but if I try to login nothing happens.If doesn't help even if I kill X (I started it with startx). And if I don't kill X, I can't go back from CLI with control+alt+F7, there's just a black screen.
I'm using Nvidia drivers also, and XFCE4. This started happening some time ago, I think I was using Gnome2 back then. And I have updated my system, and this has happened at least with 3 kernel versions. There's nothing on logs. Well, actually, there's "TCP: Possible SYN flooding on port 6881. Sending cookies" errors on everything.log. But those don't happen when system freezes. And sometimes Chromium stops loading pages but other programs don't freeze, I think it's a problem with cache or something.
Not really sure if this everything happens because of Chromium. I think I'm gonna switch back to Firefox and see what happens. Usually I'm running Chromium, Opera (use it just for a couple of pages), couple of Terminals and Kaffeine.
