Problems with the computer going to sleep on startup

The past 2 nights I've been working in Final Cut Pro and after an hour or so of the computer being one, it goes to sleep despite being in use. The first time it happened last night I found it odd but didn't think anything of it. Well, 5 minutes later it went back to sleep. I woke it up and kept working. It went back to sleep a few minutes later. This kept going on for about a half hour before I figured something was wrong and I should shut down. It was a hot night last night so I thought that may have had something to do with it.
Tonight, I started up the computer and went back to work. After about an hour the same thing started happening only tonight it was more frequent. It would go to sleep about every minute. I restarted the computer and this is when it gets bad. It will go through the startup process and just when it is about to go to the desktop, it goes to sleep only I can't wake it up. I can't do anything. My main monitor appears to shut off completely and my secondary monitor goes to sleep. Not even holding down the power button to shut it down works. I have to turn off the power strip it is plugged into to get it to turn off. This happens every time I try to boot up I don't have a Leopard disk handy to try and boot from that since that is at my studio.
I can't seem to find this on the forum. I'm stumped.
here is what I'm using
G4 dual 1.42 ghz
2 GB ram
20" cinema display main monitor
17" apple display other monitor
I think I'm using the latest version of Leopard but I'm not sure when the last time I ran software update was. Same for Final Cut Studio.

Start up in safe boot:

This forces a disk check called fsck -fy it is similar to repair disk on the disk utility. Once it has started up to your log in screen restart normally and see if that helps

  • Time Machine crashes whenever the computer goes to sleep or into screen saver mode.

Apologies if there is an obvious answer or post about this.  Every time I try to initialize Time Machine, it will begin backing up until the computer goes to sleep or the screen saver kicks in.  When I wake the computer up, I get a message that says "The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk."  The message also tells me that the problem might be temporary and to try Disk Utility to repair the backup disk if the problem persists.
When I run Disk Utility, I am told that the volume cannot be repaired and that it needs to be reformatted.  I reformat the disk, try to run Time Machine again, and get the same problem whenever the computer goes to sleep or into screen saver mode.  Lather, rinse, repeat.
I managed to get an initial backup only if I turned off the screen saver and the sleep function.  However, once I turned them back on, I ran into the same problem when Time Machine tried to update the backup.
I am running OS X v.10.6.8 on an iMac5,1.  The backup is a Toshiba 1TB USB external HD. I saw this same problem posted in the Lion forum (and I cribbed the title of this post from there).  Nobody has offered a solution yet, but it was a very recent post.
    Thanks in advance.

Oh yeah I forgot to say I use an ETHERNET connection.

I have a problem with my computer not going into 'Display Sleep' mode but actually goes into full Computer Sleep mode. Anyone know how to keep my Mac running software and not go into full sleep after I have set it to 'Never' go into 'Computer Sleep' within the 'energy saving' section!
    Any ideas guys?

  • I'm working on my iMac PowerMac8,2 PowerPC G5 (3.1) 2 GHz machine and have been having problems with the computer shutting down unpredictably. After the problem becoming impossible to work with, I shut the machine down. Now a little better, but reoccuring

I'm working with my iMac PPC G5, PowerMac8,2, 2 GHz machine running OS X 10.4.11, and was having a problem for a while with the machine shutting down unexpectedly. There was no clear pattern to when it was shutting down as far as I could tell. For a while, it would also not restart when buttoned on.
I set the machine aside for a while, probably a month or more, and then got it back out after its rustication. It started up and runs significantly better than it had been, but I have noticed it shutting down sometimes now again, though not as frequently as before. Sometimes it runs for a good long time between active work, sleep mode, and active work again. Once in a while it does shut down when no one is working on it (while asleep). But now it always restarts when buttoned on.
I've done the thorough vacuuming of any dust from the unit vents. I wonder if there's anything else I should try. In most other ways the machine works pretty well and has become the family desktop for basic uses, so I'd like to keep it running if I can. A little frustrating to not be able to upgrade all programs (iTunes) to useable versions, but that's another story....
I would appreciate any ideas about the shut down problem.

    Option 1
Reset your PRAM.  Press and hold down the Command Option P R keys while starting your computer.  You will hear the startup chime.  continue holding down those keys until you hear the startup chime a second time.  Release the keys.  If the computer restarts, you will need to reset your Date and Time.  It might be time to replace your PRAM battery.  The G5 iMacs require a 3 volt CR2032 lithium watch/camera battery like below:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/CR2032/
You can find these batteries at Walmart, Kmart, Target, most local drugstore chains, for between $3-$5, or at Radio Shack for $12-$20.
If you have any G5 iMac model EXCEPT the iSight version, you can probably do the battery install yourself.  Watch this video on upgrading your iMac's RAM to show you how to remove the back of your iMac, if you don't already know how:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/imac_g5_mem_m/
While you have the back off, use a can of compressed air to blow the dust out the vents at the bottom of the iMac, the fans, and anywhere else you can.  Also inspect the 28-30 capacitors on the logic board.  Look for dark spots, if they look puffy or swollen, or leaks.
    Option 2
Reset the SMC by removing all cables (USB, Firewire, Ethernet, Modem, Power cord) from the back of your computer.  Let it sit for one minute.  Press and hold the power on button on the back of the iMac while plugging in the power cord.  Release the power on button.  Count to five, the press the power on button again.
    Option 3
Place your original, came with the iMac when purchased install disk, into the slot on the iMac, press and hold the C key while pressing the power on button on the back of the computer.  (If you have upgraded your OS from when you purchased your iMac, example your iMac came with OS 10.3 installed, and you're now using OS 10.5, then use the OS 10.5 Retail Install disk that you had used to upgrade your OS instead of the original, came with the iMac disk.)
Continue holding the C key until you see the OS starting to load.  DO NOT do an OS installation.  At the top Menu bar, select Utilities or Utility, and pull down to Disk Utility.  On the left side of the window that opens, select your normal OS drive.  Click First Aid at the top middle of the window if it isn't already selected.  Click Repair Disk from the lower right area of the window.  When that is done, click Repair Permissions to the left of the Repair Disk button you clicked earlier.
When that is done, quit Disk Utility.  From the top Menu bar (I think its under Utilities) select the Start Up Manager, and choose your normal boot volume as the startup disk.  Restart the computer.  If successful, and you've rebooted from your normal startup disk, eject the install DVD/CD, and you're good to go.
    Good luck.

  • Had an iPhone 4 updating the OS when it was interrupted by the computer going to sleep and now is frozen on "plug into iTunes" screen.  Home/Power button combo will not reset, iTunes does not acknowledge the phone is plugged in.

I recently upgraded to the 5s, so I delegated my old iPhone 4 to a music player/daughter checking instagram and email.  Three days ago I plugged the iPhone 4 into iTunes to update it, the OS began updating.  During the update my computer went into sleep mode, interrupting the OS update.  Now the phone will not do anything but show the screen with the graphic indicating to plug the phone into iTunes.  I've tried a hard reset (holding down power button/home button), plugging the phone into iTunes before/during holding down the home button, holding down the buttons for various lengths of time in various permutations according to info I've found online, etc, and nothing happens beyond a brief showing of the Apple logo and then back to the same screen.  iTunes will make a connection noise when the phone is plugged in but otherwise makes no indication that a device is plugged in (no iPhone button in the tool bar, etc.).  Any ideas or do I need to take it to an actual Apple store and hope they don't tell me it is completely bricked?

Yep, done all that.  Repeatly.  Don't get any sort of recovery mode message or the phone showing up on iTunes at all.  iTunes is most current version, all diagnostics show everything fine, and it works fine with my current phone.  Just....nothing.

  • How long does migration of data/files from iMac to Mac usually take? And does it matter if the computer goes to sleep mode? Will it still transfer data?

    ???

There is no stock answer.....the time to transfer depends on computer speed, amount of data...and so on.
I set my computer to never sleep when I am migrating data.

  • Bought an iPhone5 from Dubai a week ago and am having a constant problem with the touchscreen going haywire. It starts flickering and apps keep opening and closing. Did a hard reset, restore, numerous times, same issue. Anyone experiencing the same issue?

The local retailer Sharaf DG needs 10 days to check the issue, not helpful at all. I spent more money to buy it from the retailer instead of the online store, and when I called Apple support they said they couldn't help me as I bought the phone from the retailer and not online. I'm extremely disappointed as this is my first iOS device and I've been told about how the iPhone is bulletproof. Guess i got a lemon.

Ok Guys, got the device back. Service centre said they replaced the Display and touch panel. I would have preferred a new phone, but whatever. I just hope this does it and the problem is fixed. @Robo, I've also got a new nano-SIM from the carrier, so hopefully now anything that can cause the phone to go crazy, is fixed.
Will update everyone in a week to confirm that the issue is resolved. Many thanks for everyone's responses.

  • MBP 13in drops wifi when computer goes to sleep, I have to restart the computer to reconnect. Help?

I recently did the Lion update on my MBP.  Since then my computer will drop wifi connection everytime the computer goes to sleep.  It will not let me log on network saying invailed password.  I have to restart the computer and then it connects automatically.  This is NOT a router problem. Skip any and all advice about routers.  I have 4 other Apple products all connected to wifi perfectly.  This is a MBP issue.  Please help.

On the MBP, go to /Library/Preferences/System Configuration
Move all the files in the System Configuration folder to the Trash.
    Restart the Mac.
It will not let me log on network saying invailed password
Just in case, open Keychain Access located in /Applications/Utilities
    Select Passwords on the left.
Use the search field top right corner of the window to locate your network keychain.
Now right or control click the keychain then click Get Info then select the Attributes tab.
    Click: Show password
    Make sure it's correct.
    And launch AirPort Utility  /Applications/Utilities
Select the connection on the left the click Manual Setup.
Select AirPort from the menu then select the Wireless tab.
Make sure the password is available there then click Update.

  • IPod Classic auto ejects from iTunes after computer goes to sleep on Mountain Lion

I posted the following a few days ago in the Mountain Lion as I am suspecting the OS has something to do with it, but got no replies so I thought it might be good to post this here too in case this issue would be familiar to some of you.
I usually have both a 160gb iPod Classic (original) and a 16gb original iPod Touch plugged into my computer and connected to iTunes, so I can listen to tracks from the devices straight through iTunes. This has worked very well for years, but since upgrading to Mountain Lion, every time the computer wakes up after going to sleep when I haven't used it for a little while, iTunes ejects my iPod Classic, and I have to replug it, but it doesn't do it with the iPod Touch. This never used to happen before, and is a tad annoying when it happens recurringly through the day.
I have also noticed that, if the iPod is ejected, it seems to erase the play count for the tracks I was playing prior to the computer going to sleep. This is no major issue, but it seems a bit odd.
I initially thought that this was happening on my work iMac but not at home (both running the latest versions of Mountain Lion and iTunes), but it does in fact happen on both computers. This behaviour only started when I upgraded to ML, and although it could be a coincidence, I think it may have something to do with it.
I am using the latest version of iTunes.
Can anyone help with this please?
    Thanks

    Hi there,
Thank you for your reply, that's much appreciated. In a way it makes me feel slightly better to know that it's nothing to do with my iPod, although it is quite frustrating. Don't Apple QA their products before releasing them anymore? I've had quite a few issues with ML since installing it. I understand you get bugs with new products, but that would be one quite easy to identify I'd think. Oh well, I'll have to suffer this like everybody else until Apple get it sorted.
    Once again, thank you.

  • Computer goes to sleep and doesn't wake up

Hi, I have an external hard drive (Western My Book), every time that the computer goes to sleep or I do it myself the computer doesn't wake up, I have to restart, I already used disk warrior, any suggestions? Thank you.

never mind, I changed the connection to a different usb port and problem solved. Thanks anyway.

  • There ain't any problem with the iphone5

There's been lots of talk about the iphone5 battery issues.  I'm one of those unlucky iphone5 owner who got some problems with the batterie.  Some thought it was related to ios6.  I can tell you it has nothing to do with it.  I was concerned about the product quality because of what I was experiencing but I knew it wasn't something that would get out of Apple's control.  They were kind enough to monitor my device and also kind enough to change my phone.  Since I got the new one, I can tell you that my battery issue is forever gone.  I only lost 25% within a period of 11 hours using it normally.  I'm running all features, including LTE,bluetooth, wifi, traffic and so on.  It is performing as well as my iphone4.  So if you have problems with your phone, go back to Apple Store and they will change your device.  I do appreciate Apple!s customer's service and so should you.  As for iOS6, I've upgrated my iphone4, ipad and ipod and there's nothing to worry about.  It's not draining my batteries any faster than iOS5, not at all.

    Using Apple Hardware Test
    Kelley Computing - Rember
But it's covered by Apple's warranty - if you ask, they should erase & reinstall OS X then if it still panics without adding any 3rd party software, there has to be some problem with the computer.

  • Computer goes to sleep whenever i try to render or save a large file

    I have a g5 dual 2.7 running 10.4.6.
I almost only use photoshop cs and final cut pro 5. Everytime I try to render or export a fcp project or save a large photoshop file which takes more than say a minute to process the computer goes to sleep, the scree goes black and I can hear the hard drives stop whirring. There are some things which seem to be uneffected by this, but last night I wanted to render a 40 minute film in fcp, and left it rendering over night, when i came in in the morning it still said 50 minutes remaining, and it should not have been much more than an hour in total
    can anyone help please.

You should check your Energy Saver settings in System Preferences. Change it so that it doesn't put your hard drive to sleep for at least 1 hour; longer if you know your rendering will take longer. Then, even if your monitor goes to sleep, your disks will keep running and the rendering should be completed.

  • A Problem with the A205-S4597 video card

    Hi
I need a video card for my laptop. A technician told me it only comes with the mother board. I wanna know if it's true or not, how can i get it, how much it cost.
The problem with the computer is that it shows a lot of colors at windows startup and then it stops working, so, i took it to the technician and he told me the problem was the video card, but i have to buy the whole mother board, because it isn't sell alole.

Yep.  The video is integrated into the motherboard so you would need to replace the motherboard on that model.  Unless you can do it yourself it will probably cost almost as much to fix it as it would to just buy another laptop.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.
