Problems with transfer of movies from Mac to external drive.

I want to transfer movies from my iTunes library to an external drive, in order to back them up for future use. I keep getting the message:
"The operation can’t be completed because the item “Cabaret.m4v” is in use."
How do I solve this problem?

Have you restarted your computer?
By the way, "transferring" is not the same as "backing up". Backing up means more than one copy on separate drives.

While formatting an external drive with a Mac format is best if it will be used only with a Mac, if the files on the drive have to be accessible to a PC also, it's possible to format it in an exFAT format, which both the Mac and a PC can read from and write to. Well, if you are not doing a complete back up of your system, you can simply drag images to an external drive - that will create a copy there and leave the original in place.

Need to transfer home movies from iPhone to external hard drive. The movies were created with Flip Video, not iPhone. I can see and watch them via iTunes but have not figured out how to move them from iPhone to hard drive. iPhone is broken (screen) and locked, but is still connecting to iTunes. I have backed up all photos/videos created with the iPhone, just need to figure out how to get these last videos off the phone. They are very important. I am working off a Windows XP machine. No, the camera wizard will not work for this as these videos are not stored in that area of the phone.

This is what I have done so far and stuck again.
I opened Image capture plugged in IPhone. Device brought up camera roll pics only.
I was able to send them to the external hard drive. Now they have green checks marks. I cannot seem to remove them. Don't want to delete them yet to put into folder for having prints made..
Devices showed IPhone but would only show camera roll I have two other folders and cannot seem to go to them to show up on the device one is Photo library has 300+ pics and
last import folder. I would like to take the 300 also from the Photo library and also copy them or move them to the external hard drive.
What step am i missing , please help.

A FAT32 drive can't store files which are 4GB or larger. You need to reformat or repartition the drive to include an exFAT, NTFS, or Mac OS Extended volume, or use a different drive, or use a way other than an external drive to transfer it.

Can't move a movie from Mac to external hard drive

Hi community!
I have troubles with moving already finished movies from my mac to an external harddrrive. My ext. hard drive is 2 TB so space is not an issue. When I try to move my movie-file (15,77 GB) to my ext. hard drive it says:
"The item “(title)” can’t be copied because it is too large for the volume's format"
This is really a problem. I want to share the movie with my family since it is their holiday that I clipped together. Can anyone help me out?

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.
Just movies can be done with more effort and routine upkeep on your part. There's various solutions depending upon how organized you are and details on the results you desire.

i need to transfer quicktime files (that were captured from video with FCP) to a PC formatted external drive (for editing them in after effects on a PC). the files can be transfered by burning them on a DVD, but that will take a very long time and waste many DVDs because i have 60 GB of material... can this be done (without having to purchase expensive software)?

i downloaded the program, but i'm not sure how to use it... reading the guide just made me more confused... if i understand correctly, it will automatically reformat ALL my files to NTFS-3G ones, which are not as stable... i'm a little scared to install it... though i may have totally misunderstood what it says. i see mostly black when i try to read these kind of things...
anyone out there have experience with this program?

I need to free up storage on my macbook pro, I bought an external drive and have copied the files over. Then in finder after transfer I moved the files to trash off of my MacBook. However, when I check the storage it still shows the same amount of storage space taken up. What are the steps after transferring files to external drive to clear storage on harddisk?

No matter what audio file I move from my desktop to any of my 20 external hhds in finder not itunes the meta data gets lost in the transfer.
My music hard drive died and I'm having to copy all my CDs to a new drive, I like to have all my tags set and ready for when I import songs into iTunes

Consider making a new library with the events you want or move the library and then edit it leaving the events you want to remain.

drag it intact from one drive to the other - be sure both driver are formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and that they both are connected using a high speed wired connection like USB, FireWire or Thunderbolt
Then connect the new drive the the MBA and launch iPhoto on the MBA whild holding down the option key - use the resulting select library window to select the library on the external drive -- always be positive that the EHD is available prior to launching iPhoto on the MBA

Problems with iTunes library copied from Mac

I copied my iTunes from my Mac, and authorized the Windows 7 iTunes to be one of my legal computer.   Some songs wouldn't copy because Windows could not handle the file name or path, but most did.
But iTunes can't find the songs.    When I double click the the songs within iTunes\iTunesMedia\Music, they play, and my iTunes shows one broken link and the new link, which apparently is in the right place.
How do I change things so that iTunes is looking the right place?

I was having the same problem and I knew there had to be an easy answer. I knew it for sure when I saw your topic unanswered. Just right click, or control click on the bar where it says name, album, genre, etc. and select "track number," this will give you the option to put them in their original order.
You can also access this under "view options" in the view pull down menu.

Problem with editable pdf's from mac to pc

I created an editable pdf document with Adobe Acrobat Pro. Users on a mac typed in the document and saved it and that all worked fine. Then they tried to open on a pc and the document was blank. Has anyone experienced this or have a suggestion?

It sounds like they used Apple's Preview to fill in the forms. If that's the case, what you're seeing is expected behavior. Preview doesn't handle form data properly.
I would suggest you ask your users to install Adobe Reader XI to ensure that form data is preserved when saving the PDF: http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Problem with reading file extensions from a Fat 32 Drive

I have been copying image files from my imac 24" OSX 10.6.8 to a Maxxtor One touch external USB drive, the drive is FAT 32 format for a PC. My wife then connects the same drive to her laptop which is running Windows 7. She then sorts the images into different folder gives me back the drive to have more loaded to sort. The problem is when I get the drive back all the image files have a funny little box behind the file extension and the preview icon is blank with a exe in green, the file info says it's a Unix extension.
I tried to remove the little box and open the .tif file or .jpg files and all I get is a image is not readable. The same drive can be mounted back to my wife's laptop and the images open up just fine in Windows media viewer.
What's going on here and how do I fix and prevent this from happening again?

So No one has any ideas on how this is happening and how to go about repairing the problem.
The trouble as I see it comes up once she moves the files into another folder on Maxxtor drive when it's hooked up to the Win 7 laptoop. The Data then is unuseable on my Mac from that point on.
I need to know WHY so I can aviod this from happening again, and how to fix currently there is 250 GB of image files I can not access on my Mac and I still have about 2 TB of image files to go through, and THEY ALL NEED TO BE ACCESSABLE.
Anybody?
