Problems with wireless bridge

I have an iMac, and I'm using its built in Airport function to share the internet connection with various devices.
I just purchased a WET610N for use with my DirectTv HD DVR which isn't wifi enabled. I took everything out of the box, put the CD into the computer and started the configuration process.
I hit a snag right off. I can't physically plug the WET610N into anything to configure it. The instructions say to plug the wireless bridge into one of the spare ethernet ports in your router.  The iMac only has one ethernet port, the one that runs from my DSL modem into the iMac.
My DSL modem only has one ethernet port too.
The DVR can't see the bridge when it scans for it. The instructions say that it needs to be configured for my network before it can be seen by any devices. I'm at a loss as to how to get this up and working. But, I figure that someone out there has done this before.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide

David Skoglund wrote:
I did. None of their instructions deal with using the built in Airport fuction. They all assume you've got an external router with multiple ethernet ports.
This is why I'm asking on the Apple boards.
I see, I'd recommend using a router instead. While an iMac can act as a router not many users try this route so finding someone that knows the ins and outs of how to set it up might be slim. You can also try posting on the Snow Leopard forums, perhaps someone there may know.
However if I were you I would simply get a router.

I have problem with adobe bridge cs6. Every time I open it Bridge tells me to Purge Cache. I have CS6 on two computers and it works fine on one of them. I have tried to reinstall it without succeeding to fix the problem. Does anyone have the same problem and a solution to it?
"Bridge encountered a problem and is unable to read the cache. Please try purging the central cache in Cache Preferences to correct the situation."

You must have a Mac.  Try this.
Quit Bridge, from user library (NOT system and root library) preferences folder find and delete the com.adobe.bridge5.plist file manual. Do this also in same user library caches folder (Caches/Adobe/Bridge CS6) and inhere find and the folder called 'cache' and drag it to the trash.
restart Bridge holding down option key and choose reset preferences, then try again.

  • Problems with wireless internet on Imac

I have an IMAC since just over a year (MAC OS X vs. 10.6.6), and I have had over the last couple of months lots of problems with wireless connection.
Sometimes it connects without problem, but mostly I have to follow a 'Diagnostic Info' process: I select Airport, then select the wireless network, then have to restart, and then all lights turn green. I can connect then and only after a minute the pages do not load anymore.
Can anyone give me some troubleshooting tips ?

  • Huge problems with wireless, would need some help

Sorry for the bad topic, and sorry for my english.
    And now the problem.
I have just bought my first laptop, and got almost everything to play nice in arch, except the wireless.
    My card is a Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG (iwl3945), and i have a Dlink 524 router (abg).
Using WAP, but can change this if its help.
Right now I'am using NetworkManager (0.6.5-3 from rep) and KNetworkManager (from AUR), and it works very very bad.
It can't connect at startup (or atleast it doesn't...), it takes several attempts to get a connection, it drops the connection and dont reconnect when it does, and so on. Its almost unusable and force me to use wired a connection just to be sure to be able to write this.
After what i read in different forums and mailinglists, there seems to be a lot of problems with wireless at the moment?
Anyone got this combination to work fine? Or are there any other way of configuration i should try? Suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!

I've had a lot of problems with wireless networking for several weeks recently, ever since I upgraded vanilla kernel26 from v.2.6.22 to v.2.6.23 (see http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=40145).  I'm using the Windows driver bcmwl5 for the Broadcom 4311 chipset via Ndiswrapper, and I'm using WPA-PSK (TKIP) encryption.  I also use a D-Link DI-524 router.  What finally cured the problem was to install the new wicd (v.1.3.1) network manager which is now in extra and to set up all networking interfaces in that GUI, abandoning using Arch network profiles and all the detailed setup in /etc/rc.conf.
My /etc/rc.conf now only contains (I'm only showing entries pertinent to networking)
    MODULES=(ndiswrapper capability sg acpi-cpufreq cpufreq_ondemand cpufreq_performance cpufreq_powersave)
    HOSTNAME="RFDellLT"
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng @nfslock @nfsd @netfs @crond !network hal cpufreq portmap wicd sshd cups alsa @openntpd privoxy)
i.e. no more INTERFACES, not even "lo", gateway, ROUTES, NET_Profiles.  Everything is set up through wicd.  You only need to put the wicd daemon in the DAEMONS array (after hal which also loads dbus), and the network daemon isn't needed anymore.  Also you should uninstall any other networkmanager.
To put the wicd icon in the system tray, create a shell script (give it any name) in the .kde/Autostart/ directory in your home directory (if you use KDE, otherwise do the equivalent thing for any other DE/WM) that contains the command /usr/lib/wicd/tray.py.
You may want to try wicd, perhaps it'll fix your problem.  It certainly has gotten good press in this forum.

  • When I updated to 10.4.10, had problems with wireless. Able to fix problem

I have a mac mini G4 since Sep 06. I had no problems with wireless until I updated to 10.4.10. My problem was I could only connect to the internet for about 10 minutes then it would not respond. I had to turn off airport then turn it back on then it would work for about 10 more minutes. I have AT&T DSL, speed stream 4100 modem, and D Link 524 router. I went to D Link web site and found out when I use encryption WEP,WPA,ETC. it has to be hexadecimal key with dollar sign ($) before the hex key (Apple computers only). Before the update, I only used password with no problems for about 9 months. Instead of using a password use 64 bit encryption its 10 hexadecimal key or 128 bit encryption its 26 hexadecimal key. Valid hexadecimal characters are 0-9 and A-F. Example of 64 bit key is $0123456789 instead of password. After I did this, I been on the internet for hours with no problems. I hope this info can help out.

Take a look through some of the other threads in this forum. Almost 100% of Safari 3 trouble after the OS X 10.4.11 update is caused by third party plugins, extensions, and input managers. Check in these folders and report back what you have in them.
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins (this is the Library folder in the top level of your hard drive)
~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins (this is the Library folder located in your Home (username) folder)
    /Library/Input Managers
    ~/Library/Input Managers
Or if you know that you have installed some third party stuff along the way try un-installing them. Again, read some of the other threads here to see who the main suspects are. Once you know what is causing your trouble then, if you still want to use the third party plug-in, go to a site like [Version Tracker|www.versiontracker.com] and look for updated versions that work with Safari 3.

  • Need Help With Wireless Bridging

Hello all, I have recently perchased high speed WiFi for my house so I could do some gaming on my Xbox. Problem is my roommate, who is a tech support professional, set the modem up in his bedroom, my Xbox is old and requires a wireless adapter to pick up signals but since the modem is so far away from it it barely recieves the signal. So currently I'm paying for nothing so I confronted him about this issue and he attempted to fix it by wirelessly bridging a router to the modem but after a month he hasn't succeeded and has given up so now it's up to me and I have no clue where to even begin. The modem we have is a Cisco DPC3825 and the router is a NetGear Wireless-N Router WVR2000 V2. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Denver: I did not actually understand what kind of bridging you want to do?
The modem already has a wireless transmitter. I think you mean the router is picking up the wireless signal and provide the xbox with connectivity via wired cable. is that right?
If correct, It looks like the issue is with the distance/barriers between your modem and router. You need to try to eliminate some barriers in between to get better signl. Try also to put the devices as close as possible to each other.

  • Problem configuring wireless bridge

Don't know of this is the right forum, but no doubt someone will put me right if it isnt...
I'm trying to get my son's hand-me-down G4 Powermac on to our home's wireless network. I bought a Belkin wireless bridge. I can log in to the router, select it and provide the encryption details. The network panel tells me I am connected to the internet via Ethernet, green light. But Safari tells me I am not connected to the internet. I'm using manual config, with the bridge's IP address and quoted Subnet mask. But if I try to enter the router's IP address, I get a message saying that address is not in this computer's subnet. I've got two other macs using the network, so I don't understand why this should be so tricky?
What do I need to do to make the router part of this computer's subnet??!

Specifically, it's an F5D7330. I had it in the box for about a year while the missus and me dithered about whether the boy should have his own web access, but he's 16 now and keeps doing his homework on the house Mac when we want to read about the latest banking collapse...
So I connect the bridge up, switch it on and use a browser to access the bridge's setup menu. It sees our router and i set the encryption.
Then I go to the Ethernet window in Network Preferences on the G4 (an old 450dp, running 10.4.11) and set Config IPv4 to Manual. I type in the IP address as instructed in the bridge startup guide, 192.168.2.201, and the subnet mask 255.255.255.0. At this stage when I check the network status it's showing a green light and tells me I'm connected to the internet via Ethernet, IP address as just typed in. But Safari tells me I'm not connected to the Internet. If I go to the troubleshooting link on the Safari page, it shows green lights for the top two, ISP (the middle one) is slowly alternating green and red, and the bottom two options are red.
So I think that maybe I should enter the router's IP address where prompted in the network prefs - 192.168.0.1 - but when I do this I get a message saying that this address isn't part of the computer's subnet.
I'm afraid I was on the outer limits of my knowledge when I was accessing the Bridge's setup menu. I don't really know much about IP addresses, I am merely obeying orders. All this talk of subnets and such has me completely baffled. But it can't be that hard, surely?
I suppose my question is, do I have to change the IP address of my son's G4 to link to the router, which is already talking to two other Macs in the house? And if so, could someone very kindly suggest how to do it and what it should be! Or if not, I'd be really grateful if someone could explain in simple terms what the problem might be and how I might correct the issue.
I did try the Belkin site but it was a long way short of helpful. Hope someone can help out.
    Thanks

  • Problem with Adobe Bridge

Hello. I have just downloaded a trial version of Adobe Photoshop - to try it out before I buy it. However, I am having problems with not being able to view images and folders I have just created in Adobe Bridge. For example, I've just edited an image but I can only see it in Finder, not in Adobe Bridge. Is this an issue with cached files and is there anything I can do? Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks Curt, In Bridge I can see all the images in my Photo library that were created previously (everything using Adobe Lightroom). The issue has only arisen with new images, and folders, that I am creating now - since downloading the trial version of Photoshop. For example, an image I shoot now and save on my hard drive, will not show up in Bridge, nor will a folder I create say for today's images. I can see everything however in the Mac 'Finder' program, so I know they are there.
I have Adobe Bridge CS6 BUT I have Adobe Photoshop CS5 - both are trial versions. Could this be the issue, I don't think so but I am trying to download the trial of Adobe PS6 as its that version that I would buy. I inadvertently downloaded, and installed, the trial version of PS CS5.

  • Problems with wireless on my MacBook Pro

I've been having problems with my wireless network ever since I got my MacBook Pro. Sometimes the computer will stay connected to the router and I will get full signal but no data will be transferred — I can't even connect to the base station. I have tried turning off wireless and turning it back on, restarting the router, restarting the computer, etc etc and nothing really seems to work. It doesn't matter how many computers are on the network, either. It generally comes back randomly. The wireless works fine on my iBook G4 and my Dell, even at times when it doesn't work on my MBP, and I've never had a problem on the wireless network at work. I've seen various posts on the internet from people with similar problems and the only solution I've seen thus far is to get the wireless card in the computer replaced. I figured I'd ask if anybody here had any pearls of wisdom before I start ******** at Apple.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi Eaglecorpse, and welcome to the forums!
Check that the Card is seated or reseat it, check the Antenna connection.
Does his Router have the latest Firmware update?
AS a test next time you lose it try logging out & back in.

  • Mapping problem with Wireless Keyboard and Japanese iPhone

    Hi everyone:
This seems to be a slightly obscure question -- at least, I can't find a ready answer for it with the search terms I've tried, possibly because most people don't use this particular accessory with the iPhone.
I have an iPhone 4 that I bought from and use on Softbank, the carrier in Japan, where I live.  While visiting the United States recently, I bought an Apple Wireless Keyboard from an Apple retailer.   I wanted to carry it with me for use with my iPhone, so I would reliably have a convenient way to access the Internet without being confined to the touchscreen keyboard.  (I live in a rural area where WiFi spots are uncommon, but my iPhone's access to Softbank's data network is fairly good and consistent.)
However, to my frustration, I can't use the keyboard due to a mapping problem.  The Bluetooth connection is fine -- the iPhone can discover the keyboard.  However, the mapping is off: typing "Q" gets me "A," typing "Z" gets me "W", numbers and punctuation are off, etc.  The key point: This is NOT a problem with the International Keyboard settings (under the Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> International Keyboards menu).  I have the Keyboard setting set to QWERTY, which is the layout of the Apple keyboard; I have tried all the other possibilities, just in case.  None of them work.  Setting the Keyboard setting to QWERTY does not make the external QWERTY keyboard map correctly.
The rather ironic addendum is this: While on a recent trip to Tokyo, I visited the Apple store in Shibuya and, after concluding the main business of my visit (discussing my MacBook's battery problems with an English-speaking staffer), I took out my iPhone and keyboard and asked him about my mapping problem.  He started with the Keyboard menu, tried the same things I had tried, realized they weren't working, and puzzled over the problem for a while.  Then he did this: He hit a key combination (I believe) that brought up a menu on the iPhone's screen.  "Ah, there's your problem," he said, and selected a new setting.  The problem was instantly fixed.
To my chagrin, however, I neglected to write down what "Ken" had done to fix the problem.  Argh... I was looking at the iPhone upside-down; I'd already taken up more than half an hour; people were waiting, and I guess, being used to living in the countryside now, that I'm not used to Shibuya crowds any more.  Anyway, I didn't take careful notes or ask him to walk me through it, and now I cannot recall or repeat what he did.  And I still can't use my keyboard!
Any ideas or advice, anyone?  How did "Ken" fix my problem, and how can I repeat it?  Much, much appreciated, in advance.

THAT'S IT.  Sir, you have solved my problem.  Thank you!!
And I feel a little silly; this will doubtless seem to an expert as if it should have been obvious all along.  But isn't that always the way in hindsight?
Here's what happened: The key combination I was trying to remember was "Apple/command + space on the hardware keyboard," as you just said above.  The "menu" it brings up is, apparently, a list of keyboards.  I take it that this list is the same as the list of the "virtual" keyboards on the iPhone?  I have never had more than one external keyboard -- the Apple Wireless -- but I do have several keyboards active virtually, as the iPhone in Japan seems to come with both the "Nihongo Ten-key" and the "Nihongo Romaji" keyboards active, and I added several other languages as well.
When I hit "Apple/command + space," this list comes up on the iPhone's touchscreen.  Highlighted and checked at the top is "English," just as if it had been selected all along.  But nonetheless, when I first turn on and pair my keyboard with the iPhone, I need to perform this key-combination action, as if to "reselect" English, and then the keyboard promptly starts working properly as QWERTY.  I can only assume that one of the others had been default-selected before -- presumably one of the Nihongo ones? -- and that this was causing the interference.
Thank you again!  You have made me and my wireless keyboard very happy.

  • Problems with wireless mouse/keyboard after upgrade to snow leopard

    Hi!
I am wondering if someone has some insight for me.  I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard from Tiger. I have been using a Logitech S 530 wireless keyboard/mouse combo for a few years.  I am now having problems with them irratically.
    1. When on line and the page is large, I often cannot move the blue bar at the bottom of the screen to scroll to the right. What happens is like a stutter; as I am dragging the bar, it and the page shake rapidly side-to-side. Sometimes, I can drag it to the right, but as soon as I let go, it snaps back to the left.  This does not happen in Word.
    2. When in boxes with dropdown options, only occasionally does that happen.  The dropdown either doesn't show, or it flashes quickly.  Sometimes it will work after clicking many times. This happens with dropdown menus as well as search boxes that have dropdown choices for previous searches or suggested searches a la Google.
    3. When I use my function key or mouse to display all windows, I can't choose the one I want.  Regardless of which one I put my cursor over, only the left-most one is highlighted and comes to the front when I click.
    4. There is a varying lag. Sometimes the system is responsive, and other times there is a lag of varying lengths before the system responds to the mouse action (click, drag, zoom, etc.)
    5. For a while, my left mouse button wouldn't work.  I reconfigured it, that seems to have done the trick.
    6. Today, I can't open any of the menu items on Firefox.  I can move the cursor there, but when I click on any of them, nothing happens. This is okay in Safari.
I have disconnected and reconnected the usb, restarted the computer, and tried to reinstall the software for the mouse and keybord. When I did that, I got a message saying it couldn't install on the current OS, so I went to Logitech and dowloaded and installed the latest version (which indicated it is for OS X 10.6.8.)
I don't know if this is a Snow Leopard problem, but it started sometime after I upgraded.  Thanks in advance for any help!
    Donna

Update all your third party software  or uninstall and reinstall 10.6 versions.
If your going to 10.7, be warned a lot of software will not work at all and your 10.5 era machine will be slow, perhaps even have problems as 10.7 is problematic on older hardware.

IMO save for a new 10.8 machine after this summer.

  • New problem with wireless connection since 27th No...

Main desktop computer (windows xp) is connected directly to the internet via ethernet cable to BTHub3. No problem exists with this  connection.
We have previously had no problem connecting Tablet, laptop, and internet radio via wireless connection to our Hub. Problems now exist with wireless connection to all of these devices:-
    - When attempting to use any of the devices wirelessly, we are unable to obtain a connection to our Network (shown on the list of those available) - indicates -  "out of range" or "obtaining IP address" or "authenticating" or "network disabled - poor connection"
    - On occasions, the devices DO show that they are connected wirelessly but are unable to access the internet or use any programmes requiring an internet connection. Messages indicate - "no internet connection" or "connection timed out - retry" or "cannot access this webpage", even when we are in the same room as, and only a few feet away from the Hub.
    - One anomaly has occurred in that the internet radio did connect and function normally on 2 occasions recently , for a duration of a couple of hours, before loosing the connection. However, during this time, the other devices still refused to connect.
Measures we have undertaken to try to resolve the problem are :-
    - We have visited the "Wireless troubleshooting" part of the BT Helpdesk on several occasions, but had already tried the measures suggested here, including changing channels and hub reset.
    - We have spoken at length to the BT tech. helpline who have been unable to resolve the problem.
    - We have emailed BT Help and received a reply from India suggesting all the things that we have already tried (ie. a "stock answer").
    - We are not confident enough to access the Hub Manager as we feel feel this is beyond our capability.
We would be most grateful if someone could help us.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Wingman2, the first thing I would do is uninstall BTDesktop Help if you have it installed. It can cause more problems than it solves.
I would also suggest that the first thing to try is a factory reset of the homehub by pressing a pin into the recess button on the rear for about 20 seconds.
After you have done a reset if you still have problems, download, install and run inSSider. It will show you the wireless channels and which one your Homehub is on. You want to find the channel with the least congestion, ie. least number of users. Once you have that you need to change your homehub onto that channel.
See link for insider. Use the free version.
    http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/
See link how to change channel on homehub
    http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/14094
After that if you are still having problems you could try setting the home hub to b/g only instead of b/g/n. If one of your devices is not "n" capable it could help.

  • Problems with Wireless connection AFTER 10.4.2 update

I have read several topics on wireless problems AFTER the 10.4.2 update and wondering if anyone (or Apple) has found a fix to this problem. I cant get to my network or the internet via airport. I have tried zapping the pram, resetting the permissions, rebooting, checking for more update on a wired connection, reinstalling both 10.4.2 combo and 4.2 update and still nothing. This happened RIGHT after the reboot upon completion of the update. Im stuck and wondering if anyone has a solution or has any one SUCCESSFULLY contacted Apple and have they got a solution to fix the problem??

I'm having the same problems with accessing my airport base station (first generation snow at 4.0.9) after loading the airport admin 4.2 patch. I loaded the 4.2 patch on my g5 and G4 running 10.3.9. The response/across of the wifi connection is very poor. I can't use chicken of the VNC to manage the G4 from the G5 anymore at all due to the slow response and accessing the internet via either the G4 or the G5 is like a dial up connection. The broadband speed test results are 192mb to 274mb up and similar down.
I have a 12"powerbook (DVI 1gig version) with 10.3.9 that I have not loaded the 4.2 patch on and I am not having any issues with wifi access to the base station or the internet. broadband logs in right at 2.8mb via DSL. I also have a Dell laptop that I access the internet through the airport base station and I have no issues with speed and the same 2.8mb broadband speed test results.
Conclusion something in the airport 4.2 patch has changed the airport cards ability to see the base station.
With all that said, my question is - How do I back out of the 4.2 airport admin patch provided by apple or how do I resolve the slow response times between the airport cards in the G4 and G5 and the base station?
    Any help?
