ProBook 4540s - Maximum Supported Memory ?

I will buy a ProBook 4540s (Intel i5) very soon.
At a lot of places on the Internet, it had been mentioned that it supports upto 8GB DDR3 RAM. But, on a details page at HP site, it had been mentioned as "16GB". So, I'm a bit confused here, though I guess that it might be 8GB. I want to know about this for sure.
Thanks

  • Processor hangs after adding more RAM to probook 4540s

    hey ALL
recently i upgraded my laptop hp probook 4540s to 16 GB RAM
I am having two identical (Same part numbers) RAM sticks of following specs:
    manufaturer:   TRANSCEND
    Memory         :   8 GB (each)
    Frequecy       :   1600 MHz
    Type               :    DDR3
    PC3                 :    12800
the issue is the lowness of processor. Processor utilization meter shows 70 to 80 % utilization with these two sticks running.
If i install only single module of 8 GB then the System runs great. i have checked both modules individualy by installing each of them in single channel configuration. also i changed the slots in single channel configuration. in single channel configuration everything runs great.
the complete specs of my system are :-
    Specifications
do anyone have any idea of what is going on
i shall be very thankfull to everyone for helping me on this

    Hi,
According to the Maintenence & Service guide for your notebook  a maximum of 8GB is supported in your notebook.
The modules supported are PC3-10600, 1333-MHz, DDR3. They are not PC3 12800 modules like the ones you have installed.
That would seem to explain the issue you are having.
    Best regards,
    erico.

  • HP Probook 4540s upgrading RAM

    Hi,
I would like to upgrade my memory (4GBs are not enough in theese days) for probook 4540s
Now, I have 1 module with theese specifications:
    CPU-Z:
    DIMM #                1
        SMBus address        0x52
        Memory type        DDR3
        Module format        SO-DIMM
        Manufacturer (ID)    Hyundai Electronics (AD000000000000000000)
        Size            4096 MBytes
        Max bandwidth        PC3-12800 (800 MHz)
        Part number        HMT351S6CFR8C-PB
        Serial number         (Personal information removed)
        Manufacturing date    Week 38/Year 12
        Number of banks        8
        Nominal Voltage        1.50 Volts
    Question is:
Can I add newer model to the second slot?
    I want to buy:
    HP SO-DIMM 4GB DDR3 1600 MHz Unbuffered
    Certificated for PC3-12800 (B4U39AA)
It seems, the new model of ram module should be compatible with my notebook, but will be compatible with my old module, while working on 2x higher frequency?
Or I have to buy 2 new modules and  replace the old too?
Or I missed something and it is not compatible in any way?
Also, I have red at other forums, that upgrading memory up to supported 16GB takes some performance issues. Is it still ture, or is this already fixed?
    Thanks for answer

    Hi ,
The model supports the following specification of memory.
    Standard
    DDR3 PC3-10600 SDRAM (1333 MHz)
Two SODIMM slots supporting dual-channel memory.
    2GB and 4GB SODIMMs
    Maximum
Upgradeable to 8192MB with optional 4096MB SODIMMs in slots 1 and 2.
    Dual-channel
Maximized dual-channel performance requires SODIMMs of the same size and speed in both memory slots.

  • Probook 4540s HHD randomly gets very slow

Hey, I have hp probook 4540s running windows 7 ultimate 64bit.
Problem is HDD sometimes (after startup) being very slow, transfer speeds according to resource monitor are ~200kb/s, windows startup takes around 30minutes. HDD transfer speeds do not get better no much how long u wait.Cpu and memory usages are regular (=low) while this happens. All diagnostic programs (hp ones) do not find any issues.
First I assumed it being a virus or windows problem so I formatted HDD and re-installed win7, a few days went by and it happened again. Computer has latest bios, and drivers, except update sp59047.exe which should be firmware for hdd this computer has. Running this sp59047 opens window which says hdd is correct for this update.. then it restarts computer which ends up in ms-dos looking command prompt saying failure. This environment has autoexec.bat and auto2.bat which both return 'failure' while i try to run them.
HDD itself cant be seen but it has sticker 'replace with hp spare 641672-001 and 8k12a0. I'd expect software issue but this is fresh windows 7 with only regular stuff (firefox, adobe flash, .Net, directx, teamviewer, and kaspersky antivirus).. when problem first time appeared this computer didn't have any antivirus, so likely kaspersky isn't causing it. So, ideas what might be the problem? Lack of that firmware update? HDD about to fail? Computer still has warranty for 2 weeks, but I hate dealing with dealers when problem is something like this which passes build in-tests and happens randomly. Haven't tried with HP yet thou.

I am sorry, but to get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since this is a commercial product. You can do this <HERE>

  • Maximum possible memory address space using OS 10.6.2 and iMac 8,1. . .

    Hello,
My understanding of the 4 GB spec. of maximum supported RAM for my iMac 8,1 is that it is a legacy of 32 bit architecture, where the address space is 2^32 unique addresses. But that is for a 32 bit system. . .
Obviously my (and most other) mac is configured with 64 bit architecture, add Snow Leopard (using 64 bit kernal) to the mix, and I expect the address space to follow suite, and support 2^64 unique address (~16 terabytes of RAM).
So it seems that the 4 GB spec. is obsolete.
Can anyone provide for me a clear technical explanation of this? (Or point me to such a resource.) I'm not really interested in anecdotal information of the "I plugged it in and the System Profiler said X" variety. I've searched this forum and Google for an answer to this question to no avail.
    Thanks,
    -SkepticalRobot

You seem to understand correctly. What is it you want to know?
When your computer is booted into the 32-bit kernel the memory space accessible is restricted to the 32-bit limit of 4 GBs. Thus, running a 64-bit capable application still limits the application to the 4 GBs unless the application is written to allow it to address more than that. I don't know if any such application exists for OS X. If you boot the 64-bit kernel (requires that your model will boot the kernel) then the address space is limited by the 64-bit maximum of 16 TBs.
In order to take advantage of the increased memory space you must use only 64-bit capable applications that can address that much memory. You also would need to be able to install that much RAM in the computer. Your model supports a maximum of 6 GBs.
It's questionable whether booting the 64-bit kernel makes much sense given that you cannot install enough RAM to much exceed what is usable with the 32-bit kernel which is a maximum of 8 GBs (4 GBs per channel, and the hardware is dual-channel.) Furthermore, there are no larger memory modules for laptops than 4 GBs, and they are very expensive. And, there's a limited number of third-party applications and utilities that are 64-bit capable. This is especially a problem for system extension modules which may not be 64-bit capable and will not work with the 64-bit kernel.

  • SSD for Probook 4540s

do probook 4540s with windows 7 ultimate 64-bit support SSD storage, and if it support, will it replace my HDD or my optical drive ?

    Hi,
Normally we replace the HDD with SSD, you can use the ODD but you need more hardware for it. Replacing HDD with a SDD is very simple interms of hardware but recover software may take a bit longer. The following shows how in general which can apply to many other machines.

  • HP Probook 4540s Sudden Shutdown Without any Warning

I have a HP Probook 4540s laptop bought in November 2012. It has Core i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50 Ghz chip with 8 gb ram and 500 GB hard disk. Till 2014 it was all OK. But now it has started giving me problems like it shut downs when it is at low battery say just about to reach 10 %. No low battery message just complete shut down(bam, screen goes dark). Now I have done the following steps
    1. Battery has been calibrated it did solve the problem but it again started to happen.
    2. I got my laptop's fan replaced 28 days back on i guess Jan 5, 2015 and vents are clean
    3. I use Hardware Monitor Software to monitor the temperature and the results are as follows :
              >> During Normal Operations it remains between 50 to 55 C (is it Normal ?) What should be the ideal temperature ?
              >> Hard Disk temp is 60 to 64 C.
    4. I use battery saver mode and everything set to normal
    5. Drivers and BIOS Updated
    6. Used HP Support Assistant to check battery health it shows OK.
    7. I have changed the values also like I set the critical level, low battery and reserve battery but i guess that also not working.
    Now My Question is
    1. Is it due to overheating ? During normal operations like when plugged in it doesn't shutdown. Works Perfectly.
    2. Or the battery is giving me trouble and needs to be replaced. After 100% charge it gives me around say 1 hr 30 mins of use but when it is about to hit  11 or 10% the system shuts down.
Please provide me with a solution
P.S. I don't use my laptop for gaming

  • HP Probook 4540s: Fingerprint Scanner Not Working

    Hi,
Problem: Fingerprint Scanner - Windows log in does not give option to log in via fingerprint scanner.
Overview: After installing fingerprint drivers from the HP site and using the HP Protect Tools to successfully enroll fingerprint, I tried logging in via this method but the windows log in screen does not display this option. Device manager correctly identifies and shows the fingerprint sensor - however, the control panel says no biometric devices detected.
I really need help in sorting out this issue. Details of what steps I took trying to make the scanner work are given below.
    Specs:
    1) Probook 4540s
    2) Windows 7 64-bit
    3) i5-3210m, 1Gb Hd 7650m, 4 Gb 1333Mhz, 750Gb 5400rpm, VFS 491 Fingerprint scanner.
Details of the problem and steps I took to install drivers:
After a fresh installation of Windows 7, I went to the HP driver site to download the latest drivers for Probook 4540s:
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=5229457&...
I installed the drivers in roughly this order:
    1)realtek ethernet controller drivers,
    2)audio drivers,
    3) the chipset and USB 3.0 drivers (but not the Intel MEI driver)
    4) Intel video driver: faced an issue such that drivers were not being allowed to install. After disabling switchable graphics in the bios, I was able to get these drivers to install.
    5) AMD video drivers: installed after the intel HD graphics driver - installed but Catalyst Control Center was not being displayed. So I re-enabled switchable graphics in BIOS, re-installed these drivers and CCC was now available.
    6) HP hotkey support
    7) HP universal camera driver
    8) Validity Fingerprint sensor
    9) Synaptics Touchpad driver
    10) Atheros wifi & bluetooth
    11) Jmicron card reader
After driver installation, I installed the HP Protect Tools. After prompting for a PC reboot - which I did - it asked for setup of security etc.. Part of this pocess was the enrolling of my fingerprints - successful. However, upon log off/ restart of windows, an option to log in with the fingerprint scanner did not appear in the Windows log in screen.
I opened the Control Panel, and found there was no biometric devices tab, even though device manager showed biometric device and validity sensor (VFS 491). I then proceeded to uninstall HP protect tools and the validity driver for the fingerprint sensor, then made sure these services were running:
    -Credential Manager
    -Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
    -DCOM Server Process Launcher
    -RPC Endpoint Mapper
    -Windows Biometric Service
    -Plug and Play
Then as suggested in another forum post, I first installed this :http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp55001-55500/sp55109.exe and then the validity drivers from 4540s drivers page, and then HP Protect Tools.
After reboot HP Protect Tools as before would enroll my fingerprints, but again no prompt at windows login came to log in with fingerprint. However, one change after the installtion of http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp55001-55500/sp55109.exe was that in control panel there is now a tab for biometric devices; however, it says that windows did not find any biometric devices installed. An image is attached showing both the device manager and the control panel!
Please HP provide a solution. Thanks!
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Ok problem solved. I dont know whether it is related to the installation of HP windows 7 Essential System Updates and Intel MEI driver or not - but I did install these.
What really worked without doubt was this - > install both the fingerprint drivers and then the HP Protect Tools. Once rebooted, open HP Protect tools, then go to administration in the bottom right corner -> Administrative Console ->Increase System security -> tick windows login security and your done. Now you will be able to log in via enrolled fingerprints.

  • Drivers for ProBook 4540s (Microsoft Windows Ultimate)

As we can see at this HP page for ProBook 4540s drivers, it has not been offered drivers for both 32-bit & 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate. I want to know whether drivers for those versions are available at anywhere &/or is it OK if I install drivers for an available version (Such as Windows Professional 64-bit version) in Windows 7 Ultimate. Will they be fully compatiable with the ultimate versions?. & anything I should know related to this matter would be great. I'm specially concern about "Windows 7 Ultimate - 64-bit" version, as I'm planning to install it on my new ProBook 4540s - i5, which I will buy very soon. Thanks

  • HP ProBook 4540s slow to boot up, all programs run slow, long delay, show non-responding messages

    Hello,
I have a HP ProBook 4540s  running windows 7  (desktop shows:  Test Mode  Windows 7 build 7601)
    The HDD is a Toshiba mk5061gsyn 500gb
For the last month or so the computer has been running very slow.  The computer has always booted/start windows a bit slowly.    Now it takes about 3-5minutes to get to the welcome screen then it takes a couple of minutes to load windows. Soluto shows all the programs that are being loaded on startup.  (I never messed with this).  I've run several antivirus programs and the system is clean.   Back in June I had the same problem but there was malware found, not this time.
I ran speccy and it shows "warning" under the S.M.A.R.T  section.    I used the HP system tools and ran the HDD test and no errors were found.    When I tried using the HDD test from Toshiba and I couldn't run the scan test, it only showed the model name and serial #.
I'm not sure what to do next?

Is there any other way to use a graphics card?
    Hi,
It already has video chip (card). As mentioned above, no way you can add an external video card to your machine. Actually there is one way which requires the following steps:
    (a) Buy a new motherboard which supports external video card,
    (b) Buy a new video card,
    (c) Buy a new cooling system,
    (d) You may need new power supply (charger)
And at the end of the day your machine may NOT work as you dream and the total cost would be more than the price of a new, better computer.
Hope this explains a bit more.
