/proc/acpi/event: Device or resource busy
Hi
ACPI has been working fine on my Acer Travelmate for a long time - but suddenly it broke. I can't start acpid deamon - I get the following error:
acpid: can't open /proc/acpi/event: Device or resource busy
Does anybody know how to fix it?
Hello, I have the same problem, but I think (not confirmed yet) that the solution of putting acpid before hald might work... (i can't restart this notebook right now...)
Just posting this because i used "lsof" to find what process uses the /proc/acpi/event file... so it would help you to find why you can't access it even when acpid starts before hald....

Button/lid (no /proc/acpi/events?)
I must be missing something obvious but it seem that when I close my laptop's lid, the button/lid section of handler.sh is not triggered. I have acpi running fine, it even seems that other events are successfully triggered (like ac_adapter), but not button/lid. Essentially I'm trying to run 'powersave -u' when I close the lid.
Help please? Thanks for the reply. It seems like this might be part of a bigger problem though, because I don't seem to have a /proc/acpi/event. What I have in /proc/acpi are ac_adapter, battery, button, embedded_controller, fan, power_resource, processor, thermal_zone, and video.
Also, when I start my computer, Arch says that the acpi daemon started successfully. But if I stop it (also successfully) and then try to start it again, it always fails with "acpid: can't open /proc/acpi/event: Device or resource busy".
Here's some sample output from /var/log/acpid which doesn't seem to be very useful. The exiting lines are probably me manually stopping acpid, although it never starts up again unless I reboot..

Unable to add partition on raid array, device or resource busy.
Greetings,
I want to be able to create a disk image of a software raid of one of my arch box.
I'm able to create my image with G4U successfully. I'm also able to restore my image without error on my new box.
When my system boot up, I make sure that my raid array are up by doing cat /proc/mdstat.
I can see that md1 and md2 are 2 of 2 and active raid 1. But, when I look at md0 this is what I got:
md0 : active raid1 sdb3[1]
6289344 blocks [2/1] [_/U]
I try to add the partition sda3 to md0 array with this command:
mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --add /dev/sda3
The output of this command give me this :
mdadm: Cannot open /dev/sda3: Device or resource busy.
It seems that this error only occurs on /dev/md0 (/) array. I'm 100% sure that both, my image and my drive (vmware hdd) are good.
This is my partition table:
/dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 = /boot (md1) 100MB
/dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 = swap (md2) 2048MB
/dev/sda3 /dev/sdb3 = / (md0) 8GB
I have also tried the image creation with Acronis... same error.I solved my issue.
My menu.lst was wrong..
kernel /kernel26 root=/dev/md0 ro
I should add this to my menu.lst:
kernel /kernel26 root=/dev/md0 ro md=0,/dev/sda3,/dev/sdb3
Now it work.
I followed the archlinux raid guide who's telling this:
Nowadays (2009.02), with the mdadm hook in the initrd it it no longer necessary to add kernel parameters concerning the RAID array(s).
Which is wrong because my distro is 2009.02, if someone can add a note to the wiki it can be usefull.
Thanks for your support -
Socket, device or resource busy, transport endpoint
I'm becoming mad, when I see this $hit msg again.
I have external USB 1TB drive and usually struggle with these random errors, warnings.
The most often is:
umount2: Device or resource busy
umount: /mnt/k: device is busy.
(In some cases useful info about processes that use
the device is found by lsof(8) or fuser(1))
Less often is this damn:
Cannot stat file /proc/6134/fd/26: Transport endpoint is not connected
Fuser -k does not help.
Most of the partitions are in NTFS.
Before there was no reason to restart Arch to get access to this partitions again.I was trying to install EBS R12 on OEL 4 update 7. But I could not get linux to let me activiate my NIC (realtek ethernet card r8101). I understand the problem is Linux assigning same IRQ with another device. Someone suggested to disable plug and plau from BIOS. However my Bios does not have a feature to do that. My system is a Toshiba Satellite A200 laptop. Question is - Is there a way to disable PnP from within linux. Or is there away to solve this problem without having to disable PnP from BIOS. Your assisstance is much appreciated.Chris,
Post Linux questions in [Linux |http://forums.oracle.com/forums/forum.jspa?forumID=135] forum.
PS I try to install from OEL5.2, it installs good but it gives me errors in the final check for HTTP, Login Page, JSP and a couple of other areas. Besides, I do not have a metalink access so I could not get the right configuration. That is why I wanted OEL 4. 7Did you try to start all the application services and run "rapidwiz -restart"? -
Deprecated /proc/acpi/
Hello,
Sorry, my english sucks.
Do you recommend to keep these options enabled in the kernel?
Deprecated /proc/acpi files
Deprecated power /proc/acpi directories
Deprecated /proc/acpi/event support
or the related acpi pkgs in Arch are updated for use /sys/ ?Most acpi modules should have switched to sysfs by now but you'd have to read the documentation for the acpi-module you want to use.
I'd still keep it around. It doesn't hurt and it's shorter than /sys/devices/platform . -
Hi,
I have a Dell Inspiron 1150. I'm struggling to get it to recognize acpi events such as the lid closing or the power button. The acpi modules I have loaded are ac, battery, fan, button. To monitor acpi events I typed
cat /proc/acpi/event
in a terminal. Is there some module I'm missing? Other acpi functionality seems to be working - I can throttle the cpu, I can get information about the state of the battery and it can detect when the ac adaptor is plugged in.goldfish2 wrote:You wont see anything happening in /proc/acpi/events using cat, if it works or not.
I beg to differ.
An example output from my (working) desktop:
$ su
Password:
[root@newcastle philip]# /etc/rc.d/acpid stop
:: Stopping acpid [DONE]
[root@newcastle philip]# cat /proc/acpi/event
button/power PWRF 00000080 00000001
button/power PWRF 00000080 00000002
button/power PWRF 00000080 00000003
button/power PWRF 00000080 00000004
[root@newcastle philip]#
I've aslo examined the acpid log, and I get a few random ac_power events but I can't seem to reproduce them -
/proc/acpi/button does not exist.
/proc/acpi/button does not exist. Any ideas?
or, anyone knows which module is the owner of /proc/acpi/button?
Thanks!I am having the same problem, even with a stock kernel. There is no power button
device and therefore acpi_listen does not detect putton press events. I am on a
Thinkpad T420s, which used to work until a recent reinstall. Here are the
outputs that were originally requested (most of them look quite similar to
enicham's):

I originally posted this question to the community section and was advised to post it here. Please bear with me as this will be a long post. I'm including the scenarios involving this reoccurring issue, the trouble shooting steps I've already
taken and the results of several diagnostic tools and logs.
I have a Sony VAIOS VPCEBB33FM lap top since 2011. I have had this issue on an off for a long time. I'm at my wit's end. Any new insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Scenario Details
1) Some times it's on and off through out the day, sometimes it won't work all day, and once in a while it will work fine for the entire day.
2) I've had this issue across several wireless services, Clear Network accessed with WiMax, Library Wi-fi, Comcast cable internet using wireless router and Wi-fi, and Comcast Xfinity Wi-Fi, to name a few examples.
3) Other devices in the household or library will work with no problems such as my smart phone or my roommates' laptops or desktop computers.
4) Once in a while, the built-in wireless adapter is not found and I have to reinstall the driver. Also the diagnostic tool has had to reset my adapter on an increasing basis.
5) I had my hard drive replaced in December 2014 and my system restored from the System Restore disks that came with it when I bought the laptop. Even though I've been online on an infrequent basis it worked just fine for a while. Now that
I've been online a bit more I'm having the same issues again.
Below are my attempts at trouble shooting so far but I still have not been able to consistently resolve my DNS issues
1) Restarting my adapter
2) Turning off my laptop and removing the power supply for 5-10 minutes before turning it back on.
3) Using the IP Config in Command Prompt
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
4) Using the NetSh reset in Command Prompt and restarting my laptop
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
netsh winsock reset
ipconfig /flushdns
[restart laptop]
5) Configuring the TCP/IP in several settings
Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click Properties.
I have used the following settings:
a) Obtain an DNS server address automatically
b) OpenDNS
208 67 222 222
208 67 220 220
c) Google DNS
8 8 8 8
8 8 4 4
6) Updating the driver for my Intel Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6250 AGN and Intel Centrino(R) WIMAX 6250 from the Intel website previous having my laptop wiped clean in 2014. It still did not resolve the issue. My laptop
manufacturer as not come up with an driver update for my adapter since 2010. I haven't tried to update the adapter driver from Intel's website since having my laptop repaired due to the fact that Intel strongly recommending using the manufacturer's updates
instead and frankly it didn't make much of a difference when I did it the first time.
7) The last one I've tried as of today is going into Services and changing the start up type to automatic for the following:
Computer Browser [changed from manual to automatic]
DHCP Client [already set to automatic]
DNS Client [already set to automatic]
Network Connections [already set to automatic]
Network Location Awareness [changed from manual to automatic]
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) [already set to automatic]
Server [already set to automatic]
TCP/IP Netbios helper [already set to automatic]
Workstation [already set to automatic]
...and I'm still having DNS issues.
My only guessing are that my laptop came with a lemon adapter that needs to be replaced, some advanced setting(s) that I'm not aware off, or my firewall/anti-virus is interfering. I've used Symmantic Anti-virus and Firewall in the past and currently
Avast Anti-Virus with Microsoft Network Firewall. I've had DNS issues with both anti-virus/firewall set ups.
Below are the results from the diagnostics and tests that I've ran.

'screen' no longer works in Yosemite - Resource Busy
For many years I have used USB serial devices to connect to external machines, using commands like
$ screen /dev/tty.usbserial-FTFZXCV 115200
Since the upgrade to Yosemite, this no longer works. The screen commands give an error
'screen cannot open /dev/tty.usbserial-FTFZXCV for R/W - Resource Busy'
There was a similar question from April but that talked about using lost to identify an orphan session.
$ lsof | grep usbserial # no output
$ pgrep screen # no output.
The permission seems sensible:

Disk Utility reports "resource busy" and can't create an disk image
HI,
Just succesfully updated to Mountain Lion on my MBA and iMac. No problems. A very smooth proces.
But, on my iMac the Disk Utility are not able to create new images at all! I'm not sure if this relates directly to the update, as
DU works fine on the MBA.
I have tried to create a simple disk image from a folder, sparse bundle disk images and sparse disk images - with and without encryption.
They al gave this output from DU: "Unable to create "MYDiskImage.sparsebundle." (Resource busy).
I understand from other postings on the web that others have experienced the same message from time to time, but have not seen a fix for it anywhere.
I can see the "disk iamge" in the DU window (left pane) but are not able to locate it with Finder or on the computer anywhere, but are even able to "repair the
disk image with DU, but then there is actually no disk image when trying to locate it. Very strange.
Any help?
The DU log has this info:

2012-08-01 07:59:21 +0200:Hi Darth,
Thanks for the suggestion. Somehow I managed to solve the issue (the question was posted in July), I think I restarted the computer a couple of times, but it's interesting that you mention Drive Genius and Drive Pulse, as I also had that app running!
Maybe Drive Pulse was also turned of here in my process and helped to solve the issue.
Anyhow, thanks. -
Using DD in terminal or Restore in Disk Utility gives me 'Resource Busy' er
Hello, I'm trying to restore an old Hard Drive image OS.dmg to a usb hard drive that I have.
I'm using the command:
dd if=/Users/Shared/OS.dmg of=/dev/disk5 bs=1m
And I'm getting
dd: /dev/disk5: Resource busy
What would cause this error? I'm not sure why it's "busy"
Thanks
Josh
PS.. I get the exact same thing when i try to do it in DiskUtilityTry using the lsof command to list the open files on /dev/disk5.
Is /disk5 enough of a description? It does not match what the df command in Terminal would show, which specifies both a device and a partition on the device. -
"ORA-00054 Resource Busy Error" when running SQL*Loader in Parallel
Hi all,
Please help me on an issue. We are using Datastage which uses sql*loader to load data into an Oracle Table. SQL*Loader invokes 8 parallel sessions for insert on the table. When doing so, we are facing the following error intermittently:
SQL*Loader-951: Error calling once/load initialization
ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1
ORA-00054: resource busy and acquire with NOWAIT specifiedSince the control file is generated automatically by datastage, we cannot modify/change the options and test. Control File for the same is:

)- it occurs intermittently. When this job runs, no one will be accessing the database or the tables.
- When we do not run in parallel, then we are not facing the error but it is very slow (obviously).Just in case, I am also attaching the Datastage Logs:

Where is my /proc/acpi/video interface? Can't find it!
Hello!
I'm using a custom kernel. (2.6.23.8) For my xorg config I need a /proc/acpi/video interface (the nvidia driver need this interface).
I searched in the kernel config, but in Power Management / ACPI there isn't a "Video" Option.
How can I active this interface?
Thanks for your help!
Best regards,
FlasherHello,
I had the same problem a while back. You have to go into Device Drivers / Graphics Support, and turn on the first option, "Backlight & LCD device support". Under that option, choose "Lowlevel backlight controls". At this point, the video option should magically appear in the ACPI section.
Works for me. There may other dependencies I don't know about.
HTH,
peart.

No battery identified in /proc/acpi/
After the last couple of kernel updates, I no longer have a BATx folder inside /proc/acpi.
I used it to pipe the results to a little script I use on my statusbar, which keeps track of my memory usage, battery left, etc.
The strangest thing is that dmesg acknowledges the battery is there, and acpi returns the correct percentage and everything. It's just gone from /proc/acpi.
Anyone else had this one happen?
My laptop is an Acer TimeLine 1410.
dmesg | grep battery
[ 5.630145] ACPI: Battery Slot [BAT1] (battery present)
acpi -i
Battery 0: Full, 100%
Battery 0: design capacity 4400 mAh, last full capacity 4264 mAh = 96%
Last edited by Onyros (2011-10-10 13:34:01)Using /proc to store ACPI information has been discouraged and deprecated since 2.6.24. The same data is available in /sys now and interested parties can (should) subscribe to ACPI events from the kernel via netlink.
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/25845
acpitool upstream needs to fix this.
