Procedure to apply cpu in RAC

Hi,
Ours is a two node RAC - 10.2.0.4 db.
whats the order of applying CPU-july 2008 path in these nodes..?
Should it be applied to 2 Db homes + 2 ASM homes.. Both homes are different.
I read the readme file.. But cant get clear order of applying patch.
Any info wud be helpful.
Thanks
Ramya

When you download CPU patch there's a README (patchnote) file explain how to apply patch correctly in different setup, RAC, ASM and Data Guard etc.
Read and follow this file.

    Hi user8884603,
as Rajesh has mentioned, all info is in the readme file, but lookout specifically:
If you can apply the patch while the DB is open or CRS is started.
If you must apply the patch on all nodes in the cluster or only from 1 node.
As which user specific tasks must be done.
    Hope this is helpful.

  • Listener not stoping while apply CPU(patch)

Any body know the effect if i dont stop listener while apply CPU(Patch), i dont want to stop listener which is serving 30more dbs also....

You are heading for a train wreck.
If the CPU is going to patch the listener code (did you read the docs to see if it is?) then it is going to affect all 30 instances.
But then 30 instances on a single server is, by definition, a train wreck waiting to happen.
If you are the junior DBA I'd suggest you talk to the senior DBA immediately. If you are the only DBA it is time you either called in a consultant or had a long talk with management about the concept of consolidation as you are presiding over lunacy.

  • Basic Steps for applying CPU Patch

    Hello,
I'm asking for someone to please post a basic step-by-step procedure for appling an oracle cpu patch. Nothing too detailed, but something I can use as an outline.
    Thank you

If you look in the readme.txt it will have all the steps needed and what to do if it is rac or not; but very high level:
    - shutdown the database
    - cd into the patch directory
    - issue $ORACLE_HOME/OPatch/opatch napply -skip_subset -skip_duplicate -local
    - Startup
    - run from sqlplus: catbundle.sql cpu apply
    - run utlrp.sql
    checking logs along the way

  • Applying patch on RAC seetup

    Dear all,
Tomorrow i need to apply a bug fix patch on my RAC Set up database. For that please tell me the step by step process , how to apply it.
    it is 2 node RAC.
    Database version : 10.2.0.4
OS:linux rhel5 i have couple of doubts on it.
1)For patch to apply , we need to down both the nodes and we have to apply that patch ( or ) making one node down and applying the patch on that node is enough to minimise the down time .
2)let me correct my steps are wrong.
    Steps to down the database:
    1.on both the nodes:
    1.database down.
    2.asm down
    3.node apps down
2.intrim patch which we downloaded we have to keep it in oracle/home/bin/opatch directory on one of two nodes is enough.
    3.set PATH environment variable
    4.set HOME environment variable
5.Go to opatch folder , and go to patch number folder.
    6.opatch apply
    after that
    7. node apps upp
    8. asm upp
    9. database upp. will do right.....no need to apply on both the nodes....applying on one node is enough right.
or else if any one of you have detailed documentation , please give the link here or mail to my id
    [email protected] Regards,
    Vamsi.

I have applied such patches several times. I am confident that I can apply any patch any time.
But sorry to say I can't tell you the steps, I'm afraid that I'll miss something. and the smallest mistake can make your activity miserable. There is no generic method to apply a CPU/PSU patch. Methods differ.
The best guide for you, is the readme attached with the patch.
The generic method to apply the patch (probably):
    1. Be cool, calm and confident
    2. Without being lazy, go through each and every line of the readme.
    3. Put the steps on a notepad (your interpretation of the readme)
    4. start the patch application process
I know I have not answered your question, but this is the way which I follow.
    Regards,
    S.K.

  • How to apply CPU patch

    Hi...guys...
I want to apply the CPU patch for 2-NODE RAC Database..
Actually I never applied patches..plz can any one guide me how to apply the CPU patches for RAC...
    As per as my knowledge..
    1.apply the patch for clusterware.
2.apply the patch for database level...
    is its right...
Another thing is how to upgrade the 10.2.0.2 to 10.2.0.4 for RAC ...
    plz help me..

    Hi,
you are right, clusterware always has to be on the same or higher patchlevel as/than the database so you will patch it first. Generally, the hardest part is finding the patch on metalink, once you have found it, there is a readme with every patch that has very detailed instructions on what to do. For CPUs and other patches, you will generally bring down services on one node, then run opatch on that node. Once it is done patching, it will tell you to restart all services on that first node and shut down services on the other node(s). Once you hit OK opatch will continue to patch the remote hosts.
The upgrade to 10.2.0.4 will be a bit more complicated. AFAIR there is a real installer with that one and once you are done patching the software you also have to patch the database itself which means downtime.

  • Procedure for migration from 9i Rac to to 11g Rac.

Aim is to upgrade 9i Rac to 11g R1 Rac on Solaris 10.
    1) Apply patch on 9i Rac to upgrade it to 11g Rac.
2)Install pre req patches on 9i (Oracle 9.2.0.8)
    3) Install 11g Database Binaries. Migrate data of 9i using 11g Software.
Can i use 9i Rman backup to restore and/or recover in 11g? (as recovery is required for a day data).
Please advice me the Best process for the Exercise.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    4 - Patch clusterware
    5 - Create ASM instance
    6 - Patch ASM instance
    7 - Install DB software
    8 - Patch DB software
9 - Run dbca (create DB)
    10 - run "crs_stat -t" to check status
you can run cluvfy before or after every step.
11 - migrate old DB to RAC

  • Apply CPU before upgrade?

We are upgrading from 10.2.0.5 to 11.2.0.3 as well as applying the October CPU within the same outage. We are installing the 11.2.0.3 oracle binaries ahead of time outside of the outage. Is there any reason we can't apply the October CPU to the binaries we install prior to upgrading the DB, to save outage time? Should we still run catbundle after the upgrade or would the changes it makes be included in the steps that the upgrade performs?

Yes you can apply the CPU (now renamed to SPU) ahead of time, then run any post install scripts in the CPU after the upgrade is completed. See this MOS Doc
Best approach for Oracle database patching sequence to latest/required patchset along with CPU/PSU/any-other-one-off patch [ID 865255.1]
Oracle recommends that you apply the latest PSU instead - PSUs includes CPUs/SPUs and are also released quarterly. Pl be aware that once you apply a PSU, you will need to continue to apply PSUs in the future (you cannot apply CPUs/SPUs).

What is your EBS,OS and Db version? Which note did you follow? Do you have patch list?
Did you check apache log file, alert log file?
    For a now..
    1. run adadmin utulity and compaile invalid objects

  • APPLYING CPU PATCHES

    Hi Hussein:
I am planning to apply the CPU patches for my EBS instance. I know that the application server and the Database server patchsets are cumulative. So I can apply the latest CPU.But the EBS patchsets are not cumulative. In order to get the list of all the patches that needs to be applied since April 2006,I need to query AD_APPLIED_PATCHES with the EBS patch numbers since April 2006 right? Is this the right approach.
    Regards,
    Bala

    Bala,
If your instance release is 11i then you are correct. You need to query AD_APPLIED_PATCHES (I would prefer querying AD_BUGS table) to get the list of applied patches.
In R12, CPU patches are cumulative.

  • Apply CPU JAN 2012 Patches in R12.1.1

What are the steps in appling CPU JAn 2012 patches in R12.1.1 ?
    Regards.

    Hi;
What are the steps in appling CPU JAn 2012 patches in R12.1.1 ? It depends which CPU patches wanna apply. For some of our client we are just appliying database patches. For some other they also want to some other patches which is for Oracle Fusion Middleware products.
Mainly for ALL patches, You need to check README part of patch. For each patch those steps are different also their prereq and post installation steps.
So you question answer is check readme part for patches
PS:Please dont forget to change thread status to answered if it possible when u belive your thread has been answered, it pretend to lose time of other forums user while they are searching open question which is not answered, thanks for understanding
