Procedure to move highlighted files en masse to new folder

This procedure should be quite simple, but it escapes me!
How can I move an entire group of highlighted files into a new folder?

Typically an inadvertent 2x click on the file name "deselects" the group and re-selects just the file you are pointing at when you click.
But you know what you want to do, so your hand is already performing the drag/drop before your head registers that only one file is now selected.
Happens to me on a semi-regular basis.
After you have selected the group of files, (assuming list view) try pointing at the date/or time area, click and drag from there instead of the filename.

How to move all files to the top level folder?

I want to move all files within a particular folder -- and all files in all sub folders -- to the top level. i.e. I want to collapse the folder structure to just one folder. Assume that there are no files with the same name.
*Method 1*
My first thought was to use Find:
1. Limit Find to the particular folder.
2. Find all files in the folder with Size > 0.
3. Switch to List view. All files are listed.
4. Select all files and drag to the top folder
5. Delete all sub folders manually.
Problem: Pages files are not found, and maybe others aren't.
This is a simple method and I'd like to stick with it.

What condition should I set within Find so that I can be guaranteed of finding all files?

It was suggested in another thread that I use Terminal to move all files to the top level, but I couldn't get it to work. And there was a problem with files that consist of bundles.

What is the easiest way to consolidate all files within a folder to the top level -- assume no duplicate names -- and at the same time remove all sub folders?

Thanks for the suggestion of EasyFind.
To find all files in a certain folder I typed in *[a-z 0-9] as a Boolean search (this thread won't let me post the exact characters required by EasyFind). That should cover every file I've ever named. EasyFind came back with "11719found/12316done".
Any idea what the missing 500 files would be? I'm hoping they are files that I don't need to know about (invisible files, system files and so on).

How do I duplicate a photo and move ONLY 1 copy to a new folder?

I am going nuts. After making a duplicate version of photo, I want to move the copy to a different file such that the photo can be in 2 locations. i.e. one copy in the original location, and then 1 copy in a separate location to be used for another purpose. i.e version 1 (summer vacation), version 2 (Daniel's high school). When I try to do this and drag a copy to the other folder, it keeps moving BOTH versions. So, I have 2 versions in either Folder but I can't get it to keep 1 copy or version in each folder!!

I did a little experimenting:
I seem to be able to copy a master to another project by option dragging if the image is managed. If it's referenced, it seems to copy a version that is still dependent upon the referenced master in the original project.
I can also drag just one of the versions to an album in another project which of course is also dependent upon the referenced master in the original project.
However, I can not copy just one version to another project. They both come, and all I can do is delete one of them.
NOTE: If I delete both with "move referenced files to trash" checked and they're referenced, the MASTER FOR THE ORIGINAL PROJECT IS GONE TOO!
I should also note that I did this as an experiment and have no need or desire to do this in my own workflow. IOW: I don't recommend it.

Media Files Sorted/Copied into new folder

I have a huge project and thousands of files I need to find all the media(quicktimes) of specific shots with the same shot/take lable and copy those files into a new folder so i can send them to someone else to edit with.

Highlight all the clips in the BROWSWER that you want to transfer and use the MEDIA MANAGER and the COPY option.

Every time I save a file it creates a new folder

Hi,
weird problem, never occurred on other Macs. I have a preso and every time I save it I see an Expander application running which creates a new folder file. Let's say I have a preso called Effects.key, when I save it or in auto-save it creates Effects.key folder,   Effects.key folder 1, Effects.key folder 2, Effects.key folder 3......an on and on and on....
What's happening ?

right click on one of the original Keynote files, select;   get info
in the Open With dropdown option; (if Keynote is not the listed), select other,
     then navigate to Keynote in the Applications folder
select; always open with

I exported a .tif file and created a new folder for it. Why doesn't the folder show in the catalog?

No, by default, exporting does not cause the photo to appear in the Catalog, nor does it cause the folder to appear in the Folder Panel.
There is an option in the Export dialog box that automatically imports the exported photo into the catalog, maybe that's what you want, maybe not. I rarely see a need to have exports included in the catalog. Most people export only when needed for non-Lightroom purposes, and in that case, there's no reason to keep exports long-term, as you can always re-create the exported photo by exporting it again.

How do I move multiple files from download?

After I download a group of files, I should like to move them all en masse to one folder on my MacBook. However, it I select all the files (via shift-click) and try to drag them to their new home, the files instead all open up inside their native applications. Absent any other solution, I have been forced to move each file one at a time from the download folder to their new location, which can get dreadfully tedious. Is there some way I can move them all in one fell swoop and be done with it? Thanks for any help you might provide.

I also subseqeuntly discovered that if I clicked on the tiny magnifying glass in the Download window, the files opened up in another Finder Window, from which I was able to do the combination command-click or shift-click to do the bulk move of the files.
I will try your suggestion of changing the Download destination in preferences the next time I am faced with this; that sounds like that would be even easier!

How can I move the permissions.sqlite file to a new folder or a subfolder?

I am using a syncing program to keep cookie exceptions on multiple computers all equivalent. Unfortunately this is causing a problem because places.sqlite changes frequently and cannot be synced while FF is running. So I want to move the permissions.sqlite file to a new folder or a subfolder so I can only sync that one folder. Is there a way to specify the location of this file?

Sorry, there is no way to move that file out of the Profile folder, or specify a different location for it, built into Firefox.
One extension that might be able to help you do that is Pike's Bookmark Backup extension. BB allows you to specify which files are backed-up and where those backup files are saved. It also has a backup interval setting, IIRC. <br />

Trying to move files into a new folder and th finder folders disappear and show latest open application

I did not have this problem running the beta. I upgraded to the shipping version yesterday and whenever I try to move a file or application into another folder, both folders disappear, the desktop screen flashes, then I see the finder folders behind whatever application I had open last sitting on top of the finder window. If I let go of the mouse nothing moves and the windows close.

I'm having the same or similar issue... I think... trying to do a little house cleaning in the file structure. For example, in our events folder I'm creating archive folders (i.e. - 2004, 2005, ect...) and when I use the Files Panel to drag and drop the past event pages into the newly created archive folder, the pages loose all their links.
Image link prior to and after moving are the same (../images/logo1.gif)
It does ask me to confirm that I want to move the file but nothing about updating the links. Is it due to the way the files are linked in the original files?

Script/Automator Get Filenames in Folder and Move Each File into Folder based on Filename?

I have searched for an answer to this and I have searched through multiple file renaming apps on the app store too but alas I cannot find anything that does what I want so I ended up looking into Automator as my saviour but I am a total NOOB.
What I want to do is point automator to a folder of my choosing
Automator then takes each file in that folder and creates a folder with the same name as the file and then move the file into that subfolder.
Sounds easy enough eh
I'm totally stumped, anyone have any guidance ???

This is a PITA to do in automator - automator does not handle loops the way it should - but in applescript it looks like so (open this in the applescript editor, select the file you want to run it on in the Finder, then run the script):
