Procedure to replace boot drive.

Hi folks,
I'm feeling especially dense tonight.  Have been googling and just can't find what I need.  I have an Imac running OSX 10.8.5  My boot drive no longer passes SMART.   I have an external drive running time machine.  My question is......  When I install a new drive, is it just a simple matter of booting using control-R and restoring through time machine?  If not, what exactly do I need to do?
Also, how dificult is it to take apart the Imac and replace the drive?
And lastly, I need to make sure I'm interpreting this correctly.  In my disk utilities window, topmost it displays: "500.11 GB ST3500418AS"  in red.  If I select that, on the right side of the screen is displayed "This device has a hardware problem that can not be repaired"  It does not give me any   verify or repair buttons to use.  Right below that on the left is my Macintosh HD.  My computer was running poorly, and checking around utilities, I found that this drive had errors.  However, verifying, then repairing that drive worked great.  The computer is running great again.  So, am I correct that "Macintosh HD" is a partition of 500.11.........?  And that the drive is physically failing?
Thanks folks.  I couldn't find what I wanted on Google, I don't know why.

What model year is your iMac? If it is new enogh that it came with Lion or Mt Lion Pre-Installed then yes once you change the hard drive you use Command + r key (Not Control + r) and that may boot you to the Online Internet recovery system from which you can Restore your Mac from your Time Machine backup drive.
If it older and originally came with Snow Leopard then you;ll need to use the original system reinstall disc to boot the computer and then Restore fron your time machine backup drive. Once you repplace the hard drive on system older than when Lion came out you might not have access to the Online recovery system as it wasn't included on older Mac computers and the drive that has the built in Recovery HD partition from the install of either Lion, Mt Lion or Mavericks is no longer in the system.
So what model year is your Mac and what version of OS X came on it when it was new?

  • Procedure for SSD boot drive in Mac Pro?

I just purchased a 115GB SSD that I want to use as the boot drive in my Mac Pro running OS 10.6.8. I've read several articles about how to set this up but none seem to be working for me. On the SSD boot drive I want only the essentials: OS, Home Folder, Apps. Everything else (docs, downloads, music, photos, movies, etc.) needs to go on my 1TB storage HD. The problem I'm having using Carbon Cloner and Super Duper to copy the OS, HF and apps to the SSD is they're copying too much data, filling up the SSD with non-essentials (there should only be about 90GB of data being copied but much more seems to be transferred). I can't seem to lean-down what's being moved. Would doing a new install with the Snow Leopard DVD and then copying over only the essential files/folders with Migration Assistant be better, more specific?
Has anyone perfected this procedure, and can give me step-by-step instructions? All help is greatly appreciated!

There are dozens and dozens of threads, MPG, MacRumors and elsewhere.
don't move anything from  "home" except the bare essential ~/Library (1GB at most) with CCC and deelect everything else. That should get you down to size.
Before you bought I hope you asdded up the /applications and good estimate. most users can get an OS/apps into 60GB or less (the max I would want to see on SSD you have) FCP and some others or if you hae a lot of large apps - some allow for installing in alternate locations as well as into system/library.
Some - there are always some - have had trouble cloning. Some had trouble with installing, too. Can't win for losing at every turn sometimes.
Been there, but look again at MPG series.

  • Replacing Boot Drive on Power PC G4

    I have a Dual Ghz, Power PC G4 (2.1), OSX 10.4.7
The original hard drive (80gb) is just about full and
I wanted to upgrade to another, larger drive.
I do have two other 80 gb drives in the computer used
for other files. But that is a separate issue.
I was told that I can only add up to a 120 gb drive to
replace my 80 gb drive. But when I went to Fry's they
    didn't have any 120 gb so I bought a 200 gb Maxtor
    ATA/100 internal Harddrive kit.
But on the box it says that for a driver larger than
137 gb it requires a Mac compatible ATA PCI card with
    48 bit bios support.
So I bought an eXrack Serial ATA Mac PCI Host Adaptor
Card, 2-Port Serial ATA 133 Dual Connection card.
But before I tear into my G4 and replace the harddrive
and try and install the card, I was hoping somebody
might tell me if I'm on the right track. Can I install the 200 GB drive and if so, do I need the PCI card I purchased?
Or should I hold out till I find the 120 gb drive?
Or should I try and get an external drive and boot
    from that?
    That's all for now.
    Dual 1 Ghz Power PC G4 (2.1)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2 additional 80 gb seagate drives

This is the first time I have posted and I do appreciate the responses. It's good to know there is a community out there that gives a darn.
As for what I ended up doing...I believe my Mac is one of the Pre June 2002 Macs so I bought a lacie D2-250 GB external drive, connected it via firewire, and then dragged most of my applications and other files (Sound Track Loops, etc.) to the Lacie and now I have enough room on my boot drive to make new installs.
And for now that's how I'm going to leave it until I buy my Pro Mac next year.
    Thanks again.

  • Procedure for replacing a drive

I have a drive that is failing (original XRaid), and have bought a new Seagate 250 to replace it. Anyone care to outline the steps for me?
    Cheers,
    Will

    The procedure is simple:
+ remove the failed drive from the xraid
+ remove the drive from the caddy.
+ put the new disk in the caddy
+ put the caddy back in the xraid
+ see the raid set rebuild (high activity on the disks, messages in xraid admin)
BTW, Is the disk bigger than the original disk? You cannot swap an apple 250GB disk for a seagate 250GB disk. The latter are a few MB smaller, so the xraid will ot except them as big enough.

  • Procedure for replacing hard drive and transfering data?

I am replacing my original hard drive with a much bigger one. All of my data is backed up using Time Machine. Is there some way for me to transfer data from my old hard drive to my new one using a quick simple method like Migration Assistant rather than doing a restore to my new drive once it is installed?
I have used Migration Assistant many times when buying a new computer and it always works perfectly. I have never done a full computer restore so I am a little worried about that process (needlessly?).

I ALWAYS build my own drive (takes 5 mins). More storage and less money.
    Use FireWire not USB.
USB is packet oriented and data transfer is managed by the CPU, Firewire is a streaming protocol and data transfer is managed by the CPU only to initiate transfer, after that, Firewire handles the rest dropping CPU load to nearly 0%.

  • MacBook Pro does not boot past apple screen after replacing hard drive

After replacing hard drive on MacBook Pro 13 inch early 2011 model, the screen only boots to the apple logo.  Do I need to re-install the OS?

The problem is that the OS is not in any where else of the MacBook Pro than in the HD / SSD. If you replace the Hard Drive, then you will need to Re-install OSX into that hard drive, it's pretty easy.
    1) Power up your Macbook Pro, as fast as you can press and hold the Option key (ALT). You'll see that it opens the bootable-devices you have, you'll see a Recovery partition, click it.
(If the Hard Drive contains data do the following)
    2) In the menu select Disk Utility.
    3) In Disk Utility go ahead and select the Hard Drive that is inside the MBP.
    4) Erase the content.
(If the Hard Drive contains no data continue with the following jumping the last 3 steps).
    5) Select Re-install OSX.
    6) Select the Hard Drive in which you want to install it.
Follow the steps of everything else (it should take approximately 1 hour to do the whole thing).
    Hope this helps!
    Later.

  • HT4889 Replacing System hard drive with a new one. How to get everything over to the new boot drive?

Replacing System hard drive with a new one. How to get everything over to the new boot drive? Should I use Carbon Copy or does apple have a better untility to do this?
I can't get my current system drive (OSX 10.8.3) to start on the first try. I always have to shut down and restart again to finally see the Apple logo.
Have used disc utility to repair the disc and permissions several times and that works. The next time I boot up, it works fine and I get the apple logo, but then the second time I boot up, it's back to the blank screen again and it only boots after the second try.  I have tried this repair three different times now always with the same result. Works right the first try (after the repair) then from the second time on it doesn't work. I just get the white screen until I reboot a second time.
Thinking I should change drives but what's the easist and best way to move everything over to the new drive so it will boot correctly with all my data on it. This is the system drive for a Pro Tools 10HD setup. MacPro 3,1 with 16 gigs ram and OSX10.8.3 on it.
    Thanks for any help!

If you have a time machine back up of your current drive you can do this
Shut down your computer, install the new drive. While the computer is off plug in the external hard drive that you have your time machine back up on. Hold Option key while the computer turnes on, let go of the option key once you get a grey screen. Shortly after you'll see  a list of bootable drives, select the one that has your time machine back up on it and boot into that drive.
From there go into disk utility, format your new drive too, osx extended journaled ( I think, double check that, its been awhile since ive had to do this), hit format
Exit disk utility and then you can use time machine to copy all your exisit data to the new hhd and then your pretty much done.
There is also a program called Carbon Cloner that will do esentially the same thing however I've never uesed it.

  • De-Activate/Re-Activate- Have to replace my boot drive

My boot drive has a bad block for the 2nd time in 6 months, so I'm going to replace
I will be cloning the drive via Mac Disk Utility to the replacement drive
I don't want to waste any Activations, so do I DE activate prior to cloning and then Re activate after replacing the new drive?
I assume this will count as only one Activation on one machine?
BTW, Adobe chat seemed clueless about this
    Thanks in advance,
    Marvin

Well actually I believe that activation is computer specific and not hard drive specific. So deactivation should not be necessary.
You can check with Customer support but you should be fine or just uninsall and reinstall. I believe if the activation has to be repaired it will be automatically done for you.
It might even tell such I had to do this once and so I could not deactivate the license I had to simply reformat the drive and reinstall and when I launc it the first time it told me the the activation had been repaired.
    That was my experience.

  • After boot drive replacement questions

My boot drive, on which the Lightroom 5 software was located, failed and I just got the boot drive replaced and downloaded Lightroom 5.  Fortunately my Lightroom 5 Catalog Previews, Catalog Preview.Irdata and all important Lightroom Library were located on a separate drive that was not impacted by the boot drive failure.  How do I go about linking those files to the Lightroom 5 I just reinstalled?

Apparently the computer repair place saw fit to rename the drives that were not impacted in any way by the boot disk failure.  So when I double clicked the catalog I ended up with all questions marks under folders in Lightroom.  I have googled looking at "find missing folders"  and "synchronize" and found nothing that makes obvious sense to me.   When I tried the missing folders option I get a message that "the selected folder or one of its subfolders is already in Lightroom. Do you want to combine these folders"   And then gives me the option to merge or cancel.  I have chosen cance as this doesn't sound right.  Any more help would be appreciated.

  • I have 2007 iMac intel, 10.4.1 with a crashed WD 2500JS boot drive. Bought a WD 3200E(AAX) which claims it is for Mac OS but documentation is unclear on WD site and plugs are different. It's SATA 7200, no instr. for boot inst. What is ideal replace?

After boot drive crash, I need to replace hard drive on 2007 Intel iMac running 10.4.1 (updating to Snow Leopard with Time Machine after replacement). There is a question not answered in lit. and docs about suitability of WD3200AAKS as replacement for WD2500JS for boot drive. The amps on the 5 and 12 VDC pins are very slightly different. Any body with a comment will help to minimize a problem with very bad timing! (When is a hd crash well-timed?!)

Thanks Kappy, the plugs are OK, just inset a little, so it looked different at first: My concern is the slightly different amperage of the 5 and 12 VDC pins, a very minor diff. not likely a problem. BTW, the little four wire cable with the tiny circuit that sticks to the side of the drive is a heat sensor that triggers the fan if it gets hot.

  • Ibook not booting, replacing hard drive doesn't help

This one's got me stymied. It's my sister's computer (ibook g4 14" 933mhz 150gb hard drive, 640mb ram). Here are the symptoms:
    1. Starts up past the apple gray screen to a blue screen.
    2. Won't start up from CD either (except hardware test CD)
    3. Started in verbose mode, it comes up with a couple of errors (one about applers232 something or other and the other about applepmuuser). If they would be helpful, I can reboot a couple of times to get them better (it boots past the verbose stuff to a bluescreen).
    Fixes attempted:
    1. Replaced hard drive (reinstalled os x 10.3 via target disk mode from another ibook g4)
    2. Ran Hardware test, no problems detected
    3. Booted into single user mode, fsck checks out fine (several times)
    4. Ran disk utility (via target disk mode) and it comes up clean (not surprisingly)
    5. Reset pram
    6. Reset nvram

Are you able to boot the iBook with the other Mac utilizing TDM?
If you've not tried that, then that would be my next step. Set up the other Mac for TDM then plug it into the iBook, boot the iBook while holding the option key until you get to the startup mangaer, select the TDM Mac-drive and continue. This will help you determine if the logicboard is shot. If it runs ok with the other Mac in TDM then it most likely is not the logic board, unless its the IDE controller on the board.

  • Mac pro 2.66 Quad Core - boot drive mirrored, replace?

    All,
I have a Mac Pro 2.66 Quad Core system.
I got all 'sexy' when I set it up - loaded four 1-TB drives in the 4 bays, Mirrored the boot set, also mirrored the secondary set for data.
I am getting ready to have these guys filled up (I do lots of video, pics, etc), and am thinking about 'growing' the drives to 2TB or even 3TB disks (mirrored of course, I'm paranoid).
So I am thinking about the 'how' of moving my data to the larger drive, getting things set up.  I have not had any of the drives fail, so I haven't needed to do a swap out yet.
Can I simply take out one of the mirrored boot drives, put in a larger drive, and it will then rebuild the mirror?
or if anyone has some info they can point me to, I'd appreciate it.
    thx

You cannot just add a larger drive and grow your RAID Volume size. You need to create an empty larger RAID Volume and COPY the data to the larger Volume, e.g., from your Backups.
Mirrored RAID is NOT Backup. It merely extends the time to repair to keep a drive failure from becoming a data disaster. RAID gives you no protection from human error, crazy software or file problems that happen "just because". You still need backup.
One of the best ways to get increased performance from a computer with the ability to support multiple Internal drives is to keep only System, Library, Applications, and the hidden unix files including paging/swap on the Boot Drive, and move everything else off. This dramatically reduces competition for the Boot Drive and everything speeds up. A Velociraptor is a little faster, and an SSD is incrementally faster still.
If that is all that is on the Boot Drive, you do not need to RAID it, since it can be reproduced from DVDs or downloads in short order. All your User files and Preferences are on other drives..
Implementing this would suggest a single small fast Boot Drive, typically with an offline clone as Backup for emergencies, and forget about RAID-ing the Boot Drive.

  • Reinstallation questions after boot drive replacement

I joined CC last year.  At the time I had Lightroom 5 installed and upgraded via various upgrade discs as well as CS5 which I arrived at via various upgrade discs.  When I joined the CC it downloaded the latest versions of both Lightroom and CS.
So now I will be starting over with a new boot drive and fresh reinstalled windows 7 ultimate installation.  My lightroom catalog was on another hard drive so it was unaffected.  My questions are as follows:  Do I need to reinstall Lightroom and CS from my various discs?  Or can I simply access CC from the link in my join up email and will it download the latest versions of those programs without me having any previous versions on the hard drive.   My final question is once I do have Lightroom downloaded again will it seek out and find my Lightroom catalog on the other hard drive?  Or do I manually have to link Lightroom to the catalog and then it will work as it did before?  Thanks for any help.

This is mainly a user-to-user forum.  And many, many Creative Cloud users never use Lightroom so they're unfamiliar with how it works.  That's why you should post product questions in the appropriate product user forums.
once I do have Lightroom downloaded again will it seek out and find my Lightroom catalog on the other hard drive?
    Not likely.

  • Proper procedure for replacing drive in Xserve RAID RAID5 set

I've got a five-drive RAID-5 set (with a sixth hot spare) in an Xserve RAID running the 1.5/1.50f firmware. One of the drives in the RAID-5 set has an amber/orange status light on and has been getting occasional errors like to following:
    Timestamp: 11/10/10 10:34:53 AM
    Priority: Warning
    Controller: Upper Controller
    Type: 112
    Event ID: 1000
    Event: Disk 5 Reported An Error. COMMAND:0x35 ERROR:0x10 STATUS:0x51 LBA:0x19B80
Description: The drive reported an ATA error. This is a failure in the communication from the RAID Controller to the drive.
I have double checked the drives in RAID Admin and, as the drive is only in a warning state, the hot spare has not been pulled into the RAID set yet. As this is an old drive, I'd like to replace that particular drive first. I have a current, full backup of the data, but want to make sure I understand the process correctly.
I understand the "Installing or Replacing an Apple Drive Module" section of http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/XserveRAID_UserGuide.PDF, but it and RAID Admin's built-in help don't describe what will happen when replacing a drive in a RAID set that has a hot spare. When I pull out the drive and replace it, will it correctly use the newly inserted drive or will it use the hot spare? If it uses the hot spare, will the hot spare revert back to a hot spare once the new drive is inserted or will it permanently become a member of the RAID set and need to be moved to the original drive's slot? Or, should I just pull out the hot spare, pull out the failing drive, and pop the hot spare into the failing drive's slot?

Hello, makkintosshu, and welcome to the AppleBoards,
If you pull out the drive the RAID should/will immediately start rebuilding using the hot spare. The hot spare will become a new permanent member of the RAID and the new replacement drive will become the new hot spare. The physical slot locations of the drives don't matter you can build a RAID from any combination of drives as long as they are on the same side.
If you pull the hot spare and then the failing drive the RAID will wait for a new drive before taking action. I find it hard to recommend this course of action unless there is a really good reason for you not wanting the hot spare to become part of the RAID. Rebuilding is going to take a good long while and you want it to start as soon as possible - as long as the RAID is not rebuilt your data is at risk. Letting the RAID rebuild hang as you physically swap out the failed the drive strikes me as bad idea that needs a really good justification.
    HTH,
    =Tod
