Process printing without black? (CMY with NO K)

I've just been informed that the process used to print the food packaging tubes that I am working on DOESN'T use black!
Thus leaving me with the C,M and Y channels. Now, I could very easily remove the black channel of my images in the Channels palette in PShop - which of course will impact upon the tonal range of my images.
Is there some way that I can convert the images from either RGB or CMYK to CMY - whilst retaining/approximating the darker tones using only three channels?
I'd really appreciate some help here - I'm lost. I've had a bit of reading online and the only info that I can find relates to inket printers and such.

With a proper color managed workflow there is no need to convert source RGB to CMYK in Photoshop. Ideally the conversion occurs at output. Or, the printer converts the RGB for you (check with the printer).
Ideally you would have the printer's ICC profile so you can soft proof the printing condition, no matter who does the conversion.
But let's say you don't have the printer's ICC. At  the very least, try to find out what you can about the inks used, the press dot gain, and the Total Ink Limit.
Edit: Color Settings. By CMYK, "Custom CMYK". Specify the appropriate ink colors, dot gain. Separation type, GCR. Black generation None. Enter the total ink limit (it will be between 200% and 300%). Note the name at the top of the dialog and hit enter ONCE.
By CMYK, scroll up to "Save CMYK". Save into your color sync profiles folder.
Then CANCEL. You do not want to change your global color settings. Creating the custom CMYK was the goal and you've done it.
Now with a source RGB image open, View: Proof Setup: Custom. Device to Simulate, select the CMY profile you just created.
For CMY output, Save As. Format, Photoshop PDF. By "Color" at bottom right tick "Use Proof Setup". You will notice that "As a Copy" automatically ticks on.
Now in the Save Adobe PDF dialog, select a PDF standard such as PDF/X-1a. By compression, select the appropriate settings. By Output, "Convert to Destination", and make sure the destination is your custom CMY profile.
Now you have CMY PDF output, and you still retain the native source RGB image.
You also have the option of importing the source RGB image into another app such as InDesign, and performing the conversion to CMY when you output from there.
I should emphasize, the custom CMYK should only be an option if you simply can't get a CMY profile from the printer. But either way, keep your source RGB image and soft proof print color and convert on output. Saves you a lot of time and headaches, and you can move to whatever CMY or CMYK that suits the print job.

  • Printing in black only with depleted COLOR cartrages doesn't work.

I just downloaded a missing W2 and NEED to print it like yesterday. My yellow and megenta cartrages are empty. But the document is black and white but NONE of the ways of printing in black only work because HP uses my VERY expencive ink to do things OTHER then printing? Really??? Is that for real? Does HP really charge an arm and a leg for ink and then use it for purposes OTHER then putting said ink on paper?

I have the exact same issue. The instructions state specifically that it will print with a depleted cartridge in grayscale but nothing works. I had to order one online. What is infuriating is that I rarely print in color. If I knew this would be an issue I never would have bought this printer.

  • Illustrator CS3 files prints without black when sent to printer

    Howdy,
    First, excuse my noobiness.
I have a large (dimension wise) illustrator cs3 file that consists of a warm gray color for the background and solid vibrant colors on the fore. No linked images, only vectors. Everything is in cmyk. I printed to our laser just to see how the colors are looking and they were fine. Then I plotted it in-house at full size and those prints looked fine too. I sent the same illustrator file to our printer but when they printed it their prints looked pastel/too light as if the file I sent them didnt contain any blacks. Exporting to a .tiff fixed the problem, but I really wanted to avoid .tiff files because of how large the graphics are going to be in the end (about 3ft wide by 18+ ft tall). Is there something that I should've done before turning in the illustrator files to our printer?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi
am sorry but that means if u made atiff u need to make a pdf and print right in acrobat ie (pdf/X1 a) or
if u to print in AI u place that pdf Linked Dont embed it works if its not ya colour Values

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 - Now won't print in Black Ink Only!

Hi! After previously owning the Hp Officejet 8500a pro and experiencing numerous issues related to the 'Black Only' printing! We then decided to scrap the HP Officejet 8500a and move on to a new printer! We did a LOT of research into the new printer and at the time of purchasing the 8600 around August 2012 last year, we found no online content of similar issues relating to the 8500.  We even contacted Live HP support to check if the 8600 would print in Black Ink Only with the colours cartridges levels at empty. The HP live chat representative informed us the printer WOULD indeed print in black only with all COLOUR cartridges installed and empty. Since we bought the new 8600, we have replaced just the Black setup cartridge with a Genuine HP Black 950xl. A few days ago all colours where at about 10% levels, apart from the yellow which then ran empty. We have been printing in Black Ink Only with the following message appearing, since the yellow ran out: "Yellow Cartridge out of ink, click continue to print in Black Ink only" As of this morning, the below message appeared with no option to print ink black only! "Depleted cartridges must be replaced to resume printing" The Yellow and now Magenta where out of ink, with no option but to purchase both cartridges, we replaced them and ran off 8 order sheets in Black Ink Only.  Both cartridges where replaced with Genuine HP. Directly after printing these 8 pages, the current Ink Levels are now: Magenta - 100% fullCyan - Has now ran out with a Red X (Annoying!!!)Yellow - Is showing a 10% Ink level with a brand new cartridge installed!!!Black - 40% full 1. Why am I no longer able to print in Black Ink Only with the empty colour cartridges installed?2. Why is the Yellow showing 10% full with a brand new ink cartridge installed full of ink? Does anyone have any advice on how to resolve this, I would very much appreciate some imput. Kind RegardsKev Challis

I know it won't print without a cartrige. I was trying to explain that this "problem" is one that needs to be prepared for in advance by not having empty cartriges installed. I am not trying to find a way around the way the printer is made to function. My printer came with the color cartriges that I plan on having for a long time because I rarely need to print anything in color. The link Jason posted clearly states that this printer, being a IIC, needs all cartriges installed in order for it to print. Here is the section:  For example, a driver color setting (by selecting "print in grayscale with the black cartridge only" in printing preferences) specifies printing using only black ink. In addition, many IPH printers can operate in "reserve mode," which allows the user to continue to print with just the black cartridge when the color cartridge is removed or not installed. In HP IIC systems, all supplies are required to be installed in the printer for the printer to function. (empahsis mine) Why it needs all supplies installed to function? I don't know and don't care. Why does it not print with empty color cartriges installed (the first question of the person that started this thread)? I don't know and it doesn't really matter. Have one set of color cartriges on reserve in case one of the ones you have runs out of ink. Don't want to hassle with this "problem"? Own another printer that is not an IIC inkjet printer.

  • Photosmart Premium C309G not printing in black

I've replaced the black ink when I noticed the printing started to fade and the levels were low. The new cartridge did nothing. The page I was trying to print had black letters with a light blue shading behind it. The light blue turned a light gray, but there was still no black. I tried a doc that had only black lettering and nothing came out. Plus, on that last page, the printer passed the paper through faster than other pages, and faster than it did when I altered the color of the lettering. The different colors are fine. It's just the black that's not working. I took the first cartridge back to the store telling them it didn't work and decided to buy all five cartridges new. Did a realignment, which failed 4 times, did a diagnostic test, black showed up there, but still wouldn't print on a regular page, tried another alignment and cleaning of the printhead...losing a lot of ink from the new cartridges...not good, they are too expensive...I need a fix for this and can't seem to get things to work, I've gone through at least a dozen pieces of paper, and tried to print over each one to see if it would work, to no avail. Please help!!

I am having a similar problem, but I just bought the printer so it is particularly mysterious. It never printed color, and after successfully printing one black-and-white document, it has decided not to print black either. It goes through all of the motions, but then spits out blank pages. I have replaced the black ink and taken all the cartridges out and put them back in again. Nothing seems to help. I would appreciate any advice. I would rather find some way to fix it than return it to the store.

  • WiFi printer which can work with one cartridge also at a time (black or color) in a colour printer

All-in-one (OfficeJet or Inkjet) WiFi printer which can work with one cartridge also at a time (black or color) in a colour printer.
Even if colour cartridge is over, w/o replacing I can still print with black cartridge.
    Which printer is suitable.

Since I upgraded to Firefox 19 from 18.0.2, on my Windows XP (SP3) laptop, I, too, can no longer open a new window. File-->New Window does nothing; also can no longer tear off a tab and open it in a new window (it stays where it is). Also, if I right-click on a tab and select Move to New Window, nothing happens. All of these worked fine in FF 18.0.2. All of these work fine with FF 19 on Windows 7. Only an issue on my XP laptop.
After trying to open a new window, and not seeing the new window come up (and yes, I waited a long time), I decided to close my current window, which had multiple tabs open. Instead of just closing, it pops up the message reminding me that I'm about to close all those tabs. If I say close, and then go into the Task Manager, the Firefox application has disappeared (as expected), but the firefox (and plug-in container) processes are still running. So I have to manually kill the Firefox process to get it to quit. it's as if it thinks there is another Window open (the one I tried to open but never appeared). This happens every single time! I've restarted my laptop, and that does not resolve the problem.
Is there a way to downgrade back to v 18.0.2 until this is fixed?

  • 6600 Won't print in black without full complement of color cartidges

Just experiencing this inability to print balck or greyscale without all the color cartridges, which I don't use.  This is one of the sleaziest practices I have encountered in the industry.  Both the software and the manual contain outright lies.  Instead of fooling around with these apparently useless and deceptive responses from HP, as a recently retired attorney with a lot of time on my hands I'll pursue my own solution - I'm filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission for unfair trade practice.

Page 72 of the Officejet 6600 user manual says the following: Printing with black or color ink only
For regular usage, this product is not designed to print using only the black cartridge when the color cartridges are out of ink. However, your printer is designed to let you print as long as possible when your cartridges start to run out of ink.
When there is sufficient ink in the printhead, the printer will offer you the use of black
ink only when one or more of the color cartridges are out of ink, and the use of color ink
only when the black cartridge is out of ink.
    • The amount that you can print using black or color ink only is limited, so have replacement ink cartridges available when you are printing with black or color ink only.
    • When there is no longer sufficient ink to print, you will get a message that one or more cartridges are depleted, and you will need to replace the depleted cartridges before you resume printing.  -------- HP and other printer manufacturers have different printer technologies for different needs.  For inkjet printers: Some have printheads built into the ink cartridges.  These printers can typically print with one or more of the colors completely empty, or even with color or black (but not both) cartridges removed. The Deskjet 6980 series is an example, or for an all-in-one see the Officejet 8040a.Other printers have separate ink supplies and replaceable printheads.  An example would be the Officejet 7110 printer.  The printhead in these printers can be replaced if they are damaged by running the printhead with colors out.  Some of these printers will allow printing with a color out, other will not.  If the printer is run without ink in one or more colors the printer may be damaged, but the user may be able to recover without having to send the printer for service.Other printers have permanent printheads.  To run these without some ink in all the colors would risk causing damage to the printhead due to clogs, air ingested in the printhead or burned out printhead firing resistors. The Officejet 6600 is an example of this type of printer. For printers with fixed printheads this could require service to get the printer to print properly again when the ink is finally replaced.  The document here describes how ink is used.  While the document is written for HP Inkjet printers the same principles apply to inkjet printers from other manufacturers.  If you never print in color a laser printer would likely be a better choice.  If you occasionally print color but mostly black an IPH printer like those in the first category above may be a good choice.

  • Printer aligns BUT only with Black and Blue all other diagnostics print with all colours

Initially when installed the printer REFUSED to align, took 7 attempts (OK I have heard of Einsteins quote !). Each time I used the printer screen to ALIGN PRINTER - the process failed. So I looked on the web, and:
    Cleaned the cartridges,
    Cleared the vents
    Removed and cleaned the printhead
    Prayed
    Tried again
All to no avail, so then I tried doing the diagnostics via the PC software, and here the mystery deepened.
When running the HP Photosmart B210 Series tool box I got three differing results from the three printing options
A Print Quality Diagnostics Page gave me Ba full five colour printout
Align Printheads gave me black and blue lies/boxes/grids and the Alignement Successful message
Print Diagnostic info gave me all four colours with lots of meaningful info including the 73 Print head Calibration COnfidence Level:0
Any Ideas ANYONE, before I bin this and buy a Kodak or Epson in disgust
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

What exactly is the issue?  The alignment aligns the color printhead to black printhead, and only one color (cyan for your printer) and black are needed for that.  (There is likely an additional set of blocks that prints gray blocks fading to white.  This section is used to calibrate the energy for the colors.)  The other test pages you printed will print various diagnostic or test pages which will use all the colors.
A successful alignment page requires the page be printed on unused white paper and requires that the black and cyan sections are printing properly.

  • How do I set up the printer default so that it prints black only, with all my devices and iMac

Have an Officejet 8600 Plus, used with an iMac. Also using wireless feature to print from iPads and iPhones. The printer has been setup from the iMac to print using the black ink cartridge, only. The problem is with my devices. I am unable to figure out how to set up the printer to print in black when I print from my devices. Is there a solution to this?

Hi symo46, welcome to the HP Forums. I understand you are trying to determine how to print with black ink only from your iPad. As you may have experienced using Airprint you will not have any options other than number of copies, however the HP ePrint App may have the option you are looking for.
When printing from the HP ePrint App, if you are printing Office documents or PDFs you can use black ink only.

  • Hp Officejet Pro 8500 will print but not anything with black ink. It keeps aligning itself.

My Hp Officejet Pro 8500 will print but not anything with black ink - i have checked the black ink cartridge and it is full. Whenever i print anything in colour (only option) the printer goes into an alignment/maintenace loop that lasts for a long time and does not fix the problem. What should I do?

Clean your printerhesd 4-5 times until the black fully restores.  I am on my third complete cleaning and have gone from 0% black to approx. 60-70%.  So, it works just takes time.
