New Install - startx results in blank screen with mouse cursor
I installed Arch on my desktop last week with no issues, so I wanted to install it on an old THinkpad R31. Everything with the installation went smooth, but when I try to 'startx' all I get is a blank screen with a mouse cursor that I can move around. I've installed xorg-xinit, xorg-twm, xorg-xclock, and xterm.
I'm not getting any significant errors in the logs, or even the terminal I issue 'startx' in.
I'm not sure what the problem could be...
Here is my output from 'startx'

According to his first post he has both xorg-twm and xterm installed.
I do indeed.
I went ahead and installed LXDE anyways, just to see what would happen. Exact same thing, it looks like everything is about to load but only the mouse cursor shows up. My Xorg.0.log is the same, so I won't post it again.
I do get an error in the console about the openbox menu.xml file missing but I doubt that's related.

What causes a slow mouse/cursor response on a fast machine?
I have a system that has always displayed poor cursor redraw performance with certain adobe applications. All rendering and other effects are fast, but basic mouse selections and button knobs are extremely unresponsive. I have searched and searched and can not seem to find out what causes the mouse cursor speed issues. Does anyone have any ideas as to why my mouse would slow for such basic Interface interactions? Do I need to change my hardware, settings, displays, BIOS, etc?
Any insight into what the mouse redraw/refresh is called in terms of computing would help me search for a solution. And if you have a solution as to why my mouse cursor acts drunk and sluggish when interacting with the Adobe UI's in premiere and after effects and sometimes Photoshop I would greatly appreciate the help.
Thank You. I attached a screen shot of a very basic selection interaction that is dog slow. The selection box redraws like there is a lag in some process associated with the square box overlay.

CliffYour answer is in this part of your specs:
> (driving two 30 inch dell monitors)
It takes a long time to draw and redraw the pixels to the screen(s) with such large monitors.
We can mitigate this by making some changes in how our UI is drawn to the screen, and such changes are a rather high priority for use to work on for the near future. -
Xorg-server 1.6 - black screen with mouse cursor
Hi
First of all: I'm really new to Arch, so maybe there is a real easy fix for this problem
Since upgrading to xorg-server 1.6 (and today to 1.6.1) I'm not able to get a running Desktop Environment.
Usually I am using gnome with compiz-fusion on my Geforce 4 (nvidia-96xx 96.43.11-4 driver).
When I boot my machine i see gdm and I am able to login. I can hear my login sound but I only get a black screen with a mouse cursor.
I added a new test user to my system without compiz and get the same.
I tried my old xorg.conf from 1.5, generated a new one with X -configure and tried without xorg.conf but everytime the same
Actually I'm not sure if the xorg update is responsible for this, because i did not watch the upgrade-process....
I googled this problem and was searching similar things in this froum, but I wasn't able to find something
Here are some files
xorg.conf (i know there are some bullshit things in it, but it was workig )

Last edited by MueLLe (2009-04-15 21:35:42)I'm having a very similar issue. Sometimes, when I boot and type in startx (I'm not even a GNOME user--I use dwm and no graphical login manager), I just get a black screen. No mouse cursor, so I think X doesn't even load. It only started with the xserver 1.6 update and the update to that hasn't changed anything. What I've been doing is just rebooting until it loads normally (takes one to three times). Is anyone else having this problem?

Gnome Black Screen with Mouse Cursor after Login
I am using Archlinux 64bit with a Gnome Desktop Environment. Everything was running normally uptill today. When i ran "sudo fc-cache", my system froze. I couldnt open any other app but i was able to access terminal. I restarted using "reboot" command. After that I was unable to log in to my desktop.
The Gnome login screen comes and after entering the correct username and password, all I can see is a black screen with mouse cursor. I then started gnome manually with "startx" and it worked. But still I am unable to use normally (that is the graphical login). I reinstalled gdm but it didnt work. Please help me out.there are a lot of processess running... dunno killing which process will not cause a problem
here is the xorg log ( sorry i dont have much knowlegde to analyse it )

New screen standby bug (black screen with mouse cursor)
It seems there is a new issue with adobe messing up the monitor standby process.
This time the monitor turns of at the setup time, but after a few minutes turns on again showing a black screen with the mouse cursor in the middle.
Happens with me if i have any kind of webbrowser running in the background, as soon as i quit the browser my screen stays off again. But with open browser windows it often turns on again and shows the black screen with the mouse cursor.
Anyone else experiencing this problem?I haven't been able to reproduce this. What makes you suspect Flash Player? Do you see this behavior if you uninstall the player? What output do you get if you type the following commands in a command prompt window?
powercfg -lastwake
powercfg -devicequery wake_armed
Thanks,
Chris -
For example on Find-A-Grave when filling in the form to add a memorial there are several blocks that you fill in including location. For some blocks you type in the information and others are pick one of the preset selections. I generally hit the tab key on my keyboard and goes to the next block except when it comes to the preset selection blocks. If I use the tab key to go to the next selection it skips right past the next selection to the selection below that. For example, after I fill in the year I hit the tab key and type u for the United States under the country selection. But in order to get the next block to appear I have to hit tab again (but only when using your browser). Your browser then skips past the state selection to the county selection. Then when I pick the state using the cursor it does it again and drops down to the Bio past the county selection.
When I use Internet Explorer I don't have this problem. I merely hit the tab button on my keyboard and it goes to the next selection rather than as your browser does that is skips to the block below.
Is there some reason you have it set up this way because it is quite annoying to have to go back up each time using the mouse cursor rather than continuing to use the keyboard to fill in everything (typing, tab key or using the arrow keys). To say the least it slows the whole process down a lot. No, it is not my computer. I've had the exact same problem using another computer. No, it is not the find-a-grave website. I just used it as an example. Using your browser forces me to stop using the keyboard to fill in a form and use the mouse and then the keyboard and then the mouse and then the keyboard and then the mouse, etc when it shouldn't be necessary when filling out a form on a website. Are you having the problem with just the one site? Others?
Please post some public linkss.

[Solved] Login freezing with busy mouse cursor and black screen.
After installing some recent updates I have suddenly found a problem when starting the login manager for Cinnamon.
After booting I am greeted with a black screen and a "busy" mouse cursor - like a stopwatch. I can't ctrl-alt-backspace to restart X.
What fixes it is - if I ctrl-alt-F2 to a new console and kill -9 the Xorg process. This causes X to restart normally. I have to do this every time now
I don't know if this is systemd related or what, but it only seemed to happen after the updates below.

WOW! That did it
Could you explain what happened or why this fixed it please?
Thanks for your help.
I don't know the details to be honest, but the title of your post basically describes my situation with GDM when I used accountsservice >0.6.25, so I figured it was worth a shot, since the symptoms were the same.
Also, Cinnamon depends on accountsservice if I'm not mistaken, so it didn't seem unreasonable that the update broke Cinnamon too.
I'm glad it works now. Let's hope a updated, working version of accountsservice is released soon. -
No mouse cursor on one monitor - Windows 7 Boot Camp
Hello,
I installed Windows 7, and ran the boot camp installer; however, since then, my mouse cursor does not appear on one of my two monitors. I can still click on things (if I can figure out where my invisible mouse is), but the arrow itself is just gone. This is only the case within Windows; mouse works fine on the Mac end.
Hardware in question:
Computer - Mac Pro with NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 graphics card
Monitor with issue - Hannspree widescreen monitor connected via HDMI cable + HDMI to mini DV adaptor
Other monitor - hp fullscreen monitor, connected via VGA
I'm wondering if it has something to do with my NVIDIA drivers on windows, because the mouse shenanigans seemed to start after this step in the Bootcamp installation process.
Any ideas for how to fix this?
Thanks very much. Then google for Cirrus Logic Audio for Mac running Windows.

* You are running Vista or Windows 7 on a Macbook
* You have no or low audio/ sound. In macbook pro, you may also see a red light in your audio jack.
*Step 1:* Download the Macbook Pro Cirrus Logic CS4206A Driver from our server.
+(As a request, please do not hotlink this file anywhere else or our server will automatically remove the file from server.)+
+In case the above download link does not work google+ CirrusAudio.10.6.1.zip
*Step 2:* Extract the right type of Driver
(depending on your windows XP/ 7/ 32 bit/ 64bit)
Step3: for Windows 7 only: Right Click on exe file of driver.
Select Properties> Compatibility > run in compatibility mode
Select Windows Vista from drop down menu and Click OK
*Step 4:* Double click the driver and install. -
Illustrator CC Suddenly Crashes when mouse cursor moves a drawn object
I've relaunched and tried re-installing Illustrator CC twice and didn't solve this unexpected crash problem. It has never happened since I paid for this software months ago.
Illustrator won't crash when:
- using the keyboard arrows to manually move any path or drawn shapes/ objects
- using my wireless mouse to draw objects/ new paths from clipboards, colour boards etc.
Illustrator CRASHES when:
- using my wireless mouse and macbook's touchpad mouse to move any new or old drawn paths/ objects/ shapes/ lines etc.
In my Opinion - ROOT OF PROBLEM:
- Wirelss and macbook's touchpad mouse cursor causees it to hang then crash 1 minute later.
Why would my mouse cursor suddenly be the cause of this crash problem when it was working fine all along?
Below is the error message, need a SOLUTION or ADVICE ASAP as I use this software to run my design business, thank you!

Thanks for your input Jacob.
I don't remember downloading added plug ins etc except downloading free fonts from reliable websites, which i've done that before and didn't cause a crash.
This is BEYOND frustration, and ridiculous as if a virus or my illustrator software has decided to disconnect cooperation with mouse cursor (macbook touchpad and wireless usb mouse)!! It's fine for Adobe Photoshop btw.
Will try your other options link, but it looks TEDIOUS to even begin! Just lost a client due to this disruption, bummer! -

ind_mun = combo2.getSelectedIndex();
Do_Accion2();

Mouse cursor snaps to point on screen
I posted this two days ago in the Mac Pro forum, but after searching for a solution since then, I've come to two conclusions: 1) the problem is not a hardware one and 2) using OS X without a mouse is horrendous. Forgive me for copying and editing my own original postings. First, here is a digest:
- the cursor snaps back to its starting point on the screen after ca. 1/2 sec of movement, I can hardly move the cursor to halfway the screen before it snaps back
- not a hardware problem, appears with Kensington Expert Trackball, Magic Trackpad, Apple Magic Mouse and keyboard used as mouse
- not connected with a single user account, appears in the login screen, main user account and system operator account
- the snap-to position differs in the login screen and user accounts
- turning of the computer, unplugging does not work
- resetting PRAM does not work
- unplugging + replugging trackball USB-cable does not work
- the problem appeared suddenly in mid of normal use.I had not changed in settings before the problem
Any ideas? Is it possible to contact someone at Apple directly?
Below my original messages:
I started having a strange problem with the mouse cursor. I started the computer, the mouse worked fine as always. Suddenly the cursor started fixating on a point on the lower right portion of the screen. I would move the cursor, it would move maybe halfway across the screen for a split second and then snap right back to the starting position.
I tried shutting down the computer and restarting. Didn't help. The cursor behaves the same way in the login screen too. The only difference is that now the "homing position" is somewhere in the upper right part of the screen.
I have a Kensington Expert trackball and a Magic Trackpad. I've removed the trackpad, in case it had started interfering with the trackball (never done that before though). Didn't help. I've unplugged and replugged the trackball USB-cable, no help.
I had the Mac Pro unplugged for over a day as I was travelling and the Kensington Expert Mouse too. Behaved exactly the same when I switched on the computer again. I tried resetting the PRAM. Didn't help.
I don't know where the problem lies. The mouse cursor keeps snapping to a position in both the login screen and my user screen. The snap-back position is different in the different screens. The cursor returns to its position when both the Magic Trackpad and the Expert Mouse are connected or when only one of them is. I can move the cursor half a screen, then it snaps back. Clicking functions, but I never have any time to click anything when the cursor bounces back to its spot.
My final remedy would be reinstalling Snow Leopard, but before I try that I would like tro try something less radical. I would also delete the mouse .plist file, but I don't know where it is. I guess that probably would not help, as the cursor behaves crazy even in the login screen, so the user setting should not be the problem.
I've come to the conclusion, that the problem is not a hardware one. The mouse cursor snaps to point on the screen when I use: 1) a Kensington Expert Mouse, 2) a Magic Trackpad, 3) the Magic Mouse that arrived with my computer and when I turned on 4) use keyboard as mouse. The problem also is not tied to a certain user because it appears 1) in the login screen, 2) my user account and 3) the sysop account. I can't figure out where to look for the problem or fix it.I give up.
I've tried everything I can think of, to fix the behavior of the mouse cursor. I've zapped the pram, I've fixed file permissions, I've removed all startup items, I've tried starting the computer in Safe Mode. No can do.
The mouse cursor snaps back to a position on the screen when I try to move it. This happens within a second, so I might be able to move the cursor half-way across the screen, but that's it. It doesn't matter how fast I move the mouse. The cursor is dysfunctional in the normal user account, the administrator account and in the login screen. It works perfectly fine in Safe Mode.
The mouse cursor misbehaves when using a USB track-ball, the Magic Trackpad or the keyboard with accessibility settings.
After advise received at this site, I tried booting up in Safe Mode and after that the cursor worked for a month or so, but the problem returned. I see no rhyme or reason why the problem appeared for the first place, or why it reappeared. I had originally had two pointing devices the track-ball and the Trackpad connected to my Mac Pro at the same time. After the problem first appeared, I removed the Trackpad. I returned it to use a day before the problem reappeared, but I don't know if that is the cause of the problem. The computer had worked perfectly fine for some months with two pointing devices before the problem appeared.
I've noticed that some other people have had the same problem. One had a feline related fix, which doesn't help me since I don't have a cat. Another fixed the problem by switching off the Internet, but that didn't help me.
What I now would like is to make an official bug-report, so that the problem could be fixed someday. I hope Apple is listening. I also plan to reinstall Snow Leopard (I have 10.6.7) next weekend. I had hoped to install a new OS only when Lion got out, but I don't seem to have much choice not. I can either simply reinstall or make a clean reinstall by erasing the disk in the process. I'd like to avoid reinstalling my programs, but I feel it is safer to wipe everything and start from scratch. Even then, I have no assurance this doesn't happen again. -
Hello, I have a problems with using mouse in Indesign CC. I am using Indesign many years ago (CS1, 2 etc.) but I never hit this problem before. When I pres ctrl+space for zoom via mouse, the cursor always disappeared, so I can't select the place for zooming. Next problem is when I printing document. I am using always print to pdf (2400DPI/350lpi/CMYK) and during print, the mouse pointer is very, but very slowly. I am using three monitors and move cursor from left to right can takes aprox. 2-3 seconds. And last problem. When I can select whole paragraph by 3x mouse click, nothing happened for first try. Then if I move mouse cursor for some pixels on the screen, all works. Do you see the same problems? I am using PC (i7 processor, 16GB of memory), Indesign CC 64bit (czech language), so I don't expect any problem with PC performance. Indesign cs6 which I am using in parallel doesn't have any problem with mouse cursor. Thx for any idea how to solve it... Ilja

IDCS5 Win - changing mouse cursor
At times I have code that processes a lot of data in ways that are not amenable to progress bars (for example, saving a single, large file to disk). During those times I would like to change the cursor from its standard arrow to another standard such as an hourglass. I see lots of general documentation on changing cursors that are specially made, but nothing that describes the process for changing from one standard cursor shape to another. Nor is there any sample code/snippets that demonstrate the procedure, as far as I could find. Does anyone have a suggestion where to look or what boss to use to change a mouse cursor from one icon to another?
TIA!
JohnI took a quick look at the header file and it all seems waay too simple. Are you sure you're talking InDesign here? (grin).
Thanks Dirk. This is what I was looking for.

Mouse cursor disappear using photoshop cs5.5
mouse cursor disappear using photoshop cs5.5 ( IMAC MID 2010 )
Before proceeding further, it is to be highlighted that the version being referred to is Photoshop CS5 Extended which is actually Photoshop Version 12.1 and is a part of Adobe Master Collection CS5.5. A screenshot of the version information is attached below for information.
Hence, I dont understand the concern expressed by many about the lowest version eligible for scripting being available in the product.
My version is in effect 12.1 and not 7 or 8.
Accordingly someone may advise on what script to use for inserting the EXIF data onto the image. I also want that the positioning of the text is predetermined and same for a batch of images required to be processed. I dont want to fix the position of text for each individual image.
