Processing my 7d footage in FCP

Hello Everyone,
I have scanned the web looking for these tips i thought wouldn't be hard to find. Basically I would like to know how to optimize my 7d footage (both 24p and 60fps).
I have discovered the Mpeg stream clip work flow of converting to Apple Prores. But then once I am in FCP, what are some tips I can use to keep the crisp look that comes off the 7d? What about exporting? Is there anythign I can do to optimize quality in exporting say for the web?
Any advice would be helpful
thanks
Johnny

  • My 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

My 2006 - 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV 1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. However, when I open the project on my other Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and FCP 6, the footage works fine as it does on my newer Imac running Mavericks and FCP 7. I have tried a Quicktime update on the Mac Pro that the footage doesn't work on but it says that I already have the newest version of Quicktime installed. I have also tried reinstalling the Final Cut Pro Studio twice, still no fix. I'm completely out of solutions and need to be able to edit HDV footage on this machine. Any help would be great. Thanks.

there was a recent software update that seemed to screw HDV up.  Do some searching here over the last month or 2 and you'll find a bunch of posts and some possible solutions.
Worst case scenario, do as Shane suggests.  But might I suggest you take a look at the user tips section of the forum.  there are some great tips on how to prevent these sorts of problems by cloning your startup drive, etc.

  • Canon 5D Mark II footage in FCP

Does anybody edit Canon 5D Mark II footage with FCP? My playback stops at every blade cut or in the end of the clip for a second before resumes the next clip ... pretty annoying. All the other HD camera footage plays just fine.
    Help!
    Jarmo

I can only covet your camera, but I happen to have a FCP tutorial for the Mark II. It says do this:
    1. Make sure you have latest MacOS (10.5.6 or highter), Quicktime (7.6 or higher), and FCP (6.0.5 or higher). And of course an Intel-based Mac (2.8 Ghz recommended). You may still get some stutter during playback with multiple layers of video, audio, and transitions/filters. But output will be OK.
    2. Make a Mark II pre-set as follows (one day FCP will include one, sigh):
    Select Audio/Video Settings.
select Sequence Presets. Select this one to duplicate and modify: DV NTSC 48 kHz.
Pull down Aspect Ratio and select HDTV 1080 i (16:9). that is is really correct but 1080p is not a choice but you will not convert to interlaced anyway.
Change *Pixel Aspect Ratio* to SQUARE. Do NOT check Anamorphic 16:9
    Select *Field Dominance* Upper(Odd)
    *Editing Time base*: select 30
    *Timecode Path*: 30 Non-Drop Frame
    Compressor: H.264
    *Audio Settings*:
Rate: 44 kHz, Depth: 16-bit, Config: Cannel Grouped
Under SUMMARY tab in Audio/Video Settings:
(make sure Sequence Preset shows name of the one you just made)
    Capture Preset: Generic Capture Template
    Device Control: Non-controllable device
    Video Playback: none
    Audio Playback: default
Click Create Easy Setup (put in your Mark II name) and click Create
    Enable verification tab: checked
NOW when you begin a new project, go to Easy Setup and pull down your newly-created Mark II preset. The tutorial I got this from said to be sure you create a NEW project or some default presets may still be in play.
You may need TRANSCODING if your system still struggles with the above.
Convert H.264 to a managable HD codec (Apple ProRes 422 or 422 (HQ) or DVCPRO HD 1080p30)
I assume you would know the steps doing this, but if not, let me know.
Would really like to know if this works for you. Have the Mark II on a short list of possibilities for a new camera.
    Good luck!

  • When capturing mini dv footage into fcp,  the media comes in sped up.

when capturing mini dv footage into fcp, the media comes in sped up.
    fcp 4.5
    g5 running OS 10.4.10
    has never happened before.

DVCam decks should automatically lock onto the control track and playback OK, it's normally not the case the other way around with regular DV decks that don't pick up on the fact it's DVCam material and play back slowly and with picture and sound breakup.

  • P2 Footage and FCP X

I received some P2 footage (720PN), most of which I was unable to import into FCP 6.0.6 using Log & Transfer so I decided that this might be a great time to upgrade to FCP X.  So I did, but FCP X had the same problem -- about half of the files would not import properly.  All of the files played fine using P2CMS, and in the end I was able to use P2ProLog to transcode everything to Pro Res and then edit in FCP X.
    1) Shouldn't I be able to import any P2 footage into FCP X?
    2) Could the "720PN" be the issue?

I had all of the files transferred from the camera to a hard drive, and I did use import from camera (even though it's on a drive).  Some of the files work and some didn't.  I also checked that there were no weird file names or delete clips -- both of which can cause problems.

  • Transfering dvd footage to FCP

Hi, Is it possible to transfer dvd footage into FCP for editing.
    Thanks,
    Maz

    1. Download and install MPEG Streamclip
    2. Open VTS011.VOB (and choose Open all files) in MPEG Streamclip
    3. Set your in/out points (hit the letter "i" where you want the clip to start, and the letter "o" where you want the clip to stop)
    4. Select the Edit menu and choose Trim
    5. Choose File -> Export to QuickTime (select a video format suited for editing)
As others have already mentioned, this will not work on copy protected DVDs.

  • I am using XDcam footage in FCP

How to i import footage into FCP without losing image quality? how do I get footage into a DVD authoring program without losing image quality and what is best program to use? THANK YOU!!

There is no loss importing into FCP. There is always loss going to a disc based delivery system. DVD is only standard definition and heavily compressed. Blu-ray is much better, but it is far from lossless.

  • Right way to handle progressive 1080 footage in FCP

Just want to make sure how the workflow goes and how the things get done the right way from the beginning.
What I'm trying to uderstand here is how I should set up and what things to consider with 1080p25 material that I wish to keep progressive through the whole process. My hardware is:
Quad 2.5 G5 with 4.5 GB of RAM
    Aja Kona 3 capture card
    SONY HDW-S2000P HDCAM recorder
    FCP 5.1.2
    Mac OS 10.4.8
Footage was shot on HDCAM 1080p25. Should I capture that using Apple uncompressed 4:2:2 codec (1080i50). How is the progressive nature of footage retained as there seems to be no 1080p25 ability in FCP? When I edit back to tape should I use 1080i50 or 1080psf25 on my Sony HDW-2000?
If someone can clarify this step by step, I would be a happy camper...
    QT 7.1.3
Final Touch HD 2.6.1 with Tangent panels

Use the stock presets all the way here... i.e. if it's 25fps, use the Kona's 50i... you won't lose the progressive scan at all, and 50i will not interlace the progressive scan footage.

  • Frame inconsistencies when shuffling footage between FCP and AE

    Hello, all.
I'm working on a little Star Wars film and that of course means everyone's favorite, Lightsabers. The process for sabers itself, although tedious, is pretty easy and everything has been looking good, until now.
I'm starting to export the effect renders (specifically the lightsaber blades) from AE so I can then place them above the source video in another Video Track and set composite mode to 'screen' and blammo, instant effects.
The problem I'm having is that it appears the work we've been doing in AE isn't matching perfectly with the source in FCP. It's tough to describe so I put together an image here http://hair-flap.com/dilemma.jpg
As you can see in the lower left picture, the stunt blades are "bleeding" out from under the glowing blade bits that we rotoscoped in AE. The weird thing is that the stunt blades didn't look like that in AE! If they did, we simply would have drawn that shape instead of the ones we did.
To describe the process I've used:
1: Export clips that need effects work from FCP as QuickTime movies
2: Import those QT movies into AE and draw the blades
3: Export the blade elements ONLY (i.e. composited over black and not the source footage) as .mov
4:Import those elements into FCP in their own video layer and set composite mode to 'screen'
What am I doing wrong? Am I not taking some kind of interlace issue into account? Is the coversion from FCP into Quicktime downsampling somehow? I have so much to learn.

Okay, back with some experimental findings.
What frame rate is the clip when you import it? 24? 30?
I've tried to keep everything in the original 29.97 across the board.
If your source video is interlaced, try doing a field
    render in AE.
Okay, this actually got some interesting results. I did a lower and an upper render and the upper actually looked more in "sync" with a majority of the clip, which is wierd since you said that DV should be lower rather than upper.
At first I thought the problem was solved since frame after frame looked perfect! But then a few went back out of sync, and then it went back in. I counted it out and it's perfectly in sync for 6 frames, then off for 3. (Sometimes there's a varience of a frame or two, but that probably has more to do with the amount the blades are moving and how easy it is to spot) Is this a useful clue at all?
Also double check the AE render's item properites in
FCP to make sure it's being "interpreted" properly.
I played around with some of the settings in the Properties>Format window for the fields and also the format settings (tried HD for the heck of it), but nothing seemed to do anything. Is there something I have to do to 'apply' any changes made in that window?
Thanks all the help, guys! I'm already learning stuff I never would have thought to look for, which makes all the stress worth it. :P

  • Unable to capture HDV footage with FCP 5.1

I've captured HD footage onto my old computer (10.4.11) without any problem but now I'm trying on my new one and it doesn't want to know.
First off there was a problem with the Firewire port ejecting my hard drives randomly so I took it to be repaired and they replaced the logic board and the port works fine.
I've looked at all the posts I could find, I've trashed my preferences, reinstalled Final Cut Studio ( after uninstalling then updating the software). I've made sure the camera is set to HDV playback rather than auto and that the iLink HDV/DV conversion is off. I've tried all the easy setups and all the custom ones I could think of but still FCP (5.1.4) won't allow me to capture. On some settings I have had device control but no image, on others it said the camera isn't connected. The only way I've captured footage is by using the HDV Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50 which works fine.
The camera is a Sony HDR-HC7 connected directly to the iMac with a Firewire 800 / iLink cable or daisy chained through my external hard drive with a 400 / iLink cable (neither of which makes any difference) I can also capture SD footage from both the HDV and a Panasonic SD camera when in DV-PAL setup. The HDV camera also shows up as connected in the system profiler.
This is driving me nuts so any help would be appreciated and if there's any other info I can help with to make this clearer let me know.

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who was having the same problem as you. Although you say the camera playback is set properly, please recheck this. go into your camera's playback menu>menu>standard set>VCR HDV/DV. Unplug your firewire from the camera. Make sure camera is set to HDV NOT auto. replace firewire cable. Now open FCP. Go in Audio/video settings>A/V devices (farthest tab on right). In box for playback edit to tape different from video output (make sure it's checked) mirrored (checked) Video playback 1080i50, Audio HDV. I hope that works now.

  • DVD Footage for FCP Edit - how to tell if NTSC or PAL?!

Hi all, apologies if this seems like a stupid request but I have a job at the moment calling for me to extract footage from a DVD, edit in FCP, add a few bits from Motion etc., but I can't work out if the DVD is NTSC or PAL!
I intend to extract the video (no issues with copyright) via DVDxDVPro but am unsure if the DVD has been encoded in NTSC or PAL. The footage it contains is from both the States (NTSC) and South Africa (PAL) so how do I tell? I don't want to go through a standards conversion if I can help it.
I am keen to try to retain as much quality as possible (client can't provide tape) so also any thougts on the best output from DVDxDVPRo for FCP editing?
    Thanks all,
    Best wishes
    Michael

    Hi Thomas, that's it!
Thanks for this - it clearly shows the TV standard and the resolution plus 4:3 etc., so everything I needed for confirmation.
Glad I cheked because it was in Pal - thought the conversion in DVDxDVPro looked a bit ropey.
This realy baffled me - seemed so simple but couldn't find a way to tell the standard. Learn something everyday...
I am using DVCPro for export from DVDxDVPro - anyone thoughts on a better option?
Thanks again for the answer - and so quick on a Sunday too!
    Kind regards

  • Capture Sony FX1 HDV footage in FCP 5.0.4

    Hi,
Tomorrow we'll have to capture a lot of footage from a Sony FX1 HDV.
I have no experience with this camcorder.
What are the best capture settings in FCP ?
We want the native HDV footage.
    thanks

The best capture settings are those that match how you shot the footage.
If it is HDV1080i/60, then obviously you elect the capture preset.

  • Capturing footage to FCP 6.0.1 from Sony HVRZ1U HD Camera

I'm doing an HD project using a Sony HVRZ1U camera. I'm capturing footage from a Sony HDV GV-HD700 deck. I get nothing in the viewer when I go to log and capture and I cannot capture anything when I press capture because there is no video signal. I can see video on the viewer for the deck. When I change the settings on the deck from AV-DV out, I can see a stretched version in DV quality when I change the settings. I just cannot see a HDV signal to my computer. What are the correct settings for capturing this format? I've tried all the various possibilities and haven't been successful. The deck is connected to the computer via firewire to the HDV/DV iLink cable. Is this deck compatible with FCP? Is the video too much info for the computer?

When setting any Sony HDV device to output HDV you should disconnect the ilink/wirefire cable first, in the menu find Rec In/Out and set the ilink Conv to OFF for HDV. Then connect to the computer when both computer and deck are turned off.
If you have 6.0.1 then why not updated to the latest version, if you do update you will also need to update Quicktime.

  • Reposting this - bringing dvd footage into FCP - progressive scan

I occasionally have clients that need me to bring footage into their projects from a dvd or vhs. I'm looking into getting something that can do both NTSC & PAL and I've come across this product:
    Sharp DV-NC80
    6-Head Hi-Fi Stereo VHS/S-VHS VCR & DVD, CD-R, V-CD Combo Player - Multi System, Multi Zone
My only dilemma is that the dvd player does not have progressive scan. Can anyone let me know if that should matter or not and what progressive scan is for? (I read the jagged edge article, but does progressive scan affect how FCP digitizes dvd material as well?) Thank you.

Unless you are bringing the material in via a capture card, you can't take advantage of the 480p scanrate anyway...
