Processing Nikon Scan 4.0.2 NEF files in PSE 7 Raw Editor

I own a Nikon Coolscan 5000 ED. The scan software Nikon Scan 4.0.2 can produce "raw" files with NEF extension. On the web I found some remarks concerning this file type stating that the scanner NEF is not really a raw file. A scanned pixel has already 3 color values, so there is no need for demosaicizing. It is stated that in fact the NEF file is a type of TIFF file instead.
Anyhow, importing this scanner NEF file in the PSE7 Adobe Camera Raw Editor seems to impose no problems. After editing the image can be saved including the editing parameters, so the original image may be restored or changed by repeated editing. By choosing "Done" the editing info is saved in a XMP file additional to the NEF file. You also may Save As DNG file containing the editing parameters together with the image data in a single file. The processed file may also be loaded into the Editor Workspace directly for additional fine tuning.
My question comes down to: is this is a viable solution for real raw processing of the scanned images. The scanner NEF file is not exactly raw, so I'm not sure whether or not the ACR Editor (or converter) handles the image data correctly. Does the ACR Editor know that the scanner NEF file is already demosaicized? And is the additional metadata (like colorspace) correctly interpreted?
Do you have experience with or knowledge about the quality of this type of workflow, please let me know. Any comments are welcome!

PS I also posted this subject in the forum: Photoshop Elements Technical Issuses and got the suggestion to try this forum. I'm using the Windows platform.

Thanks Thomas and Ann for your valuable info.
I understand that the output color data of a scanner is not really Raw. Contrary to camera's, scanners are reading linear RGB data so there is no need to convert or demosaice the data. May I conclude that the Nikon's proprietary "Raw" NEF format comes down to TIFF with embedded reversible editing parameters that can only be used in the Nikon Scan (editing) software?
Consequently, when importing the Nikon NEF's in ACR5.2 the embedded parameters are lost (possibly because ACR is not supporting the Nikon Scanner "Raw" format). So there is no advantage in using the NEF format and outputting in TIFF should be just fine.
Anyhow, I prefer using ACR as a start instead of the standard editor because of its fine and reversible editing tools. But how do I import TIFF's in ACR? When opening a TIFF in the PSE7 Editor, this file type is opened in the normal Editor. How do I switch to the ACR? Is it possible to save the ACR reversible editing parameters embedded in the same TIFF file or as accompanying XMP file ("Done") or should I "Save As" a DNG file.
And above all, can I be sure that the Color Management defined in Nikon Scan (sRGB, Gamma) is maintained while processing the file in ACR?

Since you can open any jpg or tiff file in ACR, I would guess that ACR handles these files exactly the same way, but that is just a guess.

  • I recently bought full edition of Lightroom 5 for my Nikon D610 but when i connect my other camera, Nikon D3100 for editing my NEF files it says not supported files. What am i doing wrong?

I recently bought full edition of Lightroom 5 for my Nikon D610 but when i connect my other camera,Nikon D3100 for editing my NEF files it says not supported files. What am i doing wrong?
    Thanks in advance

Often, this error message means that you have used some version of Nikon software to transfer the photos to your computer, and this has corrupted the files. There is a fix which uncorrupts the files at http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/fix_corrupted_nef.html
But you said you get this message when you "connect my other camera Nikon D3100", the key word being "connect", and this doesn't really fit the description I just gave. This error message normally happens after you have transferred the photos to your computer via Nikon software, not when you connect it. So ... maybe you need to explain a little more ... what exact task (what menu options, what are you clicking on, what are you trying to do) when you get this error.

  • Lightroom 4.4 cannot partly read Nikon Capture NX2 changes in NEF files

    Good Morning,
if I improve a NEF-File in capture NX2 and save it as a NEF-file and afterwards will import these files into LR, then the changes are available on the LR Importscreen (great), but during the import-process in LR the changes - embedded in the NEF-file - disappear, and I just see the original NEF-file before the changes. Looking to learn how to solve this problem.

Nikon Capture NX2 uses its own proprietory process to render the raw data and produce a viewable image file which Lightroom cannot use.
Lightroom has its own process and profiles developed for your camera model, it uses these to render the raw data and produces a viewable image file. The view you see on the import screen are the thumbnail jpeg's created by your camera which enable you to view the image on your camera's screen.
Adobe may have created aditional profiles for you camera to emulate the look of your camera, in the develop module these are located in the Camera Calibration and can be choosen there (Camera standard, camera landscape, camera portrait etc.). There are also tools for you to create your own profile and look for your camera if  you wish.

  • Nikon d600, cannot open my NEF files in RAW.  I have PS cs6.  Please help!

I have a Nikon d600, Adobe PS cs6, and cannot open my NEF files in RAW.  Please help!

In Photoshop, if you go to Help/About Plug-Ins/Camera Raw, what version of Camera Raw is reported? There should only be one version. And since you have Photoshop CS6 you could install Camera Raw 8.3.
Since you downloaded with the Nikon program, it could have changed your raw files such that they cannot be opened in Camera Raw. I understand there is a utility somewhere that will fix the files if that is the problem. But I don't recall how to find that utility.
Next time you have raw files to download, I suggest you use Lightroom to do the downloading from the card. I see no value in using any of the Nikon software to perform that task. If there is any chance that you still have the images on the card, I would suggest trying to download them again using Lightroom. But first you would have to remove the ones that you downloaded initially.

  • LR 5.7 and Nikon D7200. unable to import NEF files.

I have LR 5.7 and a brand new Nikon D7200. I upgrades LR3.x to 5.7 and now i am unable to import NEF files. Is there a solution? did i do something wrong?

Though this is not productive, and to those on the thread, my apology, JimHessI have had the service for greater than a year and I am month to month  - so I would be surprised if there is a cancelation fee. With Respect To the 'do not get it' the camera is 2 days on the market, so yes, I do understand no support right now, but, as you stated in your earlier post, 'a couple of months' THAT is what I do not understand! I do not know if you work for Adobe, or just a user but that is where my comments started.
In My Humble Opinion 2-3 weeks, that is something understandable. Now, it is up to Adobe, a business, to make the decision of how many resources they put on this, and thus the timing. As a consumer the only 'vote' I have is my dollar!
The cloud market is great for companies that get a constant revenue stream to fund their business, verse perpetual licenses where they obtain lumps of business from upgrades. When they build a new version with enough value to drive their install base to move/pay for the next upgrade. To the consumer the value of the cloud, should be continues and timely enhancement and not waiting for long next release schedules. That is why over the next few years I will give more money to Adobe that buying perpetual licenses, the continues and timely updates.
I will let you have the last comment on this, as I am done on the negative side.
What is more useful is posts like trshaner who is showing novices like me how to continue to use the product through features in the product.

  • D7000 NEF Files in PSE 7

Hi all!  I just got a new Nikon D7000 and PSE7 isn't recognizing the NEF files.  It has no trouble opening the files from my old D50.  Yes, I updated the product and yes I installed Camera Raw 5.5 but it still isn't working.  Any help would be much appreciated (before I toss my laptop out of the window in frustration...).

You would need to upgrade to PSE9. Alternatively you could download the Adobe DNG converter. I regularly use DNG raw files in Adobe editing software and the format works well. However I would recommend keeping your NEF files as your back-up copy.
    Windows:

    Mac:

  • Photoshopcs6  mac 0sx10.9 unable to open NEF files, already installed camera raw  DNG converter 8.6

just installed photoshopcs6 running mac 0xs10.9 , installed DNG converter camera converter8.6 and still unable to open NEF files

Which nikon camera are the nef files from?
If you go to Photoshop>About Plug-In and click on the words Camera Raw, what version does it say?
Have you tried Help>Updates from within photoshop cs6 to the camera raw 8.6 plugin?
(then you shouldn't have to use the dng converter, unless your nikon is a very new model)

  • Opening .NEF files in PSE 3.0

I can do this via 'Graphic Converter'  saving as a tiff file, but is there a way I can open the .nef file from a Nikon D90 directly in PSE 3.0 ?
I should point out that my ignorance of this subject is down to the fact that I shoot film, and don't possess a digital
    camera.

Another option you might consider is downloading
    the adobe dng converter 5.6.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Macintosh
This will convert the d90 files to adobe dng (adobe's camera raw format), which can
then be opened in photoshop elements 3, just like any other camera raw file.
I think the latest camera raw plugin for pse3 is 3.6.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3549
You want to experiment with one file first, with the different compatibilty
modes in the dng converter, until you find the one that will open in pse3.

  • Can't open .NEF files in photoshop or RAW. Help!

I was always able to open .NEF files in RAW when I had my old computer, but I just recently got a new computer and now I can't open them. Does anyone know how to change the settings so that I'm able to open these files in photoshop CS5 Extended/RAW?

Try installing Camera Raw 6.7.1 manually

  • Cannot open NEF files in PSE 9

I have just installed a second version of my copy of PSE 9 on a laptop. When I try to open an NEF file I get the message 'Cannot open [file-name] because it is the wrong type of file'.
I can open these files on the version I have installed on my PC so am confused as to why this should be different on the laptop.
I understand I can get around this by converting the files to DNG format but I'd much rather open them directly in pse as I currently do on the version installed on my PC.
Is there any way to get this fixed?
    Thanks
    Neil

    Hi,
Are both PC and Laptop using the same version of Camera Raw - in the editor go to Help -> About Plug-in -> Camera Raw to check the version.
You may have updated your PC but not the Laptop - go to Help -> Updates
Failing that, please let us know which camera model you have.
There is a forum for PSE - best to ask questions there.

  • Some Nikon D300 NEF files don't appear in Bridge CS3 (Mac)

    Hi all,
I'm using a Nikon D300 and just upgraded to CS3 on my MAC in no small part because the D300 was not supported by CS2. I am running into a problem though.
I always shoot in both JPEG and RAW modes. When I open Bridge I always see each JPEG version of a shot.
However, only about 50% of the time can I see the NEF (RAW) version of the thumbnail. The rest of the time I only see a generic "RAW" thumbnail with no image. This sporadic NEF viewability carries over to the preview pane when I select such a NEF file.
Furthermore, Camera Raw cannot open the NEF files that are not visible in Bridge. When I try opening them I get a message saying "Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this file type."
I have tried purging the Cache (through Tools) as some indicated in other forums threads but this has not helped. I have also downloaded the ACR 4.4 plugin and installed it in the correct library location.
Has anyone else experienced this (whether on a Nikon or other camera)? Any advice?
    Thanks

I've finally solved the problem with having only some of my NikonD300 NEF files viewable in Bridge/readable by Photoshop! Jon Michael Riley had said he was having similar problems so I wanted to make sure he and anyone else has the info on what worked for me.
The issue does not have anything to do with purging the thumbnail cache or installing the latest version of Camera RAW 4.4.1. While they were good suggestions (offered by Adobe's Technical support people also), they do not resolve this particular issue.
I read that an earlier version of what Jon described as "Nikon's clunky software" had corruption issues when images were first transfered from the camera via Nikon PictureProject Transfer. It looks like the latest incarnation has the same issues. Nikon products can see the transfered images without a problem. HOWEVER, Adobe Bridge/Photoshop cannot rectify the corruption issue caused by transferring photos using Nikon's utility.
So here's the solution: DO NOT use Nikon PictureProject Transfer! It is a piece of garbage! Instead, make ADOBE PHOTO DOWNLOADER the default tool to transfer images from the camera. To make it default do the following:
Open Bridge, pull down the Bridge CS3 Preferences. Select the "General" preferences set. On this screen you will see "Behavior". The first clickable box reads "When a camera is connected launch Adobe Photo Downloader". Select this box to render this the default transfer tool.
If you still have the pictures on your memory cards you can re-transfer them using Adobe Photo Downloader. All your NEF files should now be readable by Bridge/Photoshop. I've told Adobe Tech Support about this problem with Nikon's software. Hopefully they'll be able to check this as an option if others call in with similar problems.
Unfortunately I have not figured out how to repair the corruption in the files I transfered earlier using Nikon's piece of garbage software. Since I don't have the images on memory cards anymore I can't just re-transfer them. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to do this? Will I ever be able to access my earlier NEF shots?
    Cheers,
    Greg
Thanks to everyone for trying to help resolve these issues.

  • Nikon Df Nef File Thumbnails not showing in Adobe Bridge CS5

    HI,
I am having trouble getting NEF thumbnail to show in Bridge CS5, but only from the Nikon Df. All other, older, NEF files are showing up without a problem
I have installed the latest updates (Camera Raw etc)
I would appreciate any advice on getting this to happen.
    Thanks

Ok thanks for that, at least I wont be chasing my tail.
I did install the DNG converter 8.3 but I still NEF files as a NEF icon. Any clues to what I may not be doing right there?

You need Adobe camera raw version 8.7. Unfortunately your software pre-dates the camera. ACR 8.7 is only compatible with PSE13. But it is possible to download and install the free DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download (.exe file) click here DNG Converter 8.7
Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.7
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

Do you have access to another Mac to see if the disk can be read by it?  If it can't then you're pretty sure it's the disk. If it can then there may be issues with your optical drive which might be cleared up by using a cleaning disk on it, one that uses dry brushes (no liquid).
If you have access to another Mac and it can read the iWork disk make a disk image of it so you can move the disk image to your iMac and install from the disk image.
