Processing system audio output
I need to figure out a way to equalize the output signal from the system's main audio output. I need to equalize the speakers hooked up to my soundcard, and I want the equalization to happen to everything going out of the sound card.
Does anybody have an idea?

IPhone/iPod - Processing internal audio stream (whatever audio is playing )
Hi Guys,
I think this is probably not possible but is it possible to write an app that can process any playing audio from the iPod app, for example to add reverb?
Any help would be much appreciated.
All the best
AndyHi KT,
Sorry for being a bit slow here, but are you saying:
1. the iPod app on the iPhone can act as a host for AUFX components.
Or
2. You can write an app that can intercept the system audio output and use this in a AUGraph with AUFX plugins to modify the audio.
Or
3. Something completely different.
Thanks

Help! Something freakish has happened to my audio output
I have no clue what I've done, but suddenly I am only getting audio output from odd numbered tracks on my timeline.
There is no problem with the source audio, it's fine, I checked it.
What should be happening is that Track 1 (and all subsequent odd numbered tracks) come out of my left speaker, and Track 2 (and all even tracks) out of my right speaker. ie dual mono.
Suddenly I'm getting Track 1/odd tracks out of both speakers, and Track 2/even tracks out of none.
This is probably something hyper simple and obvious but I have no clue what it is. I even tried trashing the Prefs and fiddling with user settings. Changing User Prefs: Audio Output: Default Stereo Prefs (it's normally on a custom dal mono setting) makes no difference at all.
Please please someone help because it is going to be an absolute nightmare only working from alternate tracks.
Dual 2.5ghz G5 Mac OS X (10.4.8) 4gb RAM, 250gb HDThank you - I did check that - but it wasn't that. After rebooting and preferences trashing multiple times and even buying new speakers, I finally found out what it was.
In the Apple System Preferences: Hardware: Sound: Output the Balance was set to left. I have absolutely no idea how this occurred, I didn't even know this setting existed and I hadn't accessed any system preferences for days. The sound "vanishing" happened mid-edit - one moment I was working on the timeline, the next half the sound had gone. I do have some memories of the speakers crackling, but I don't know if it was around the same time or not. The (old) speakers are working absolutely fine now the Balance is set back to the middle.
So I can only assume there is some very very obscure key combination that I inadvertently pressed that changes the system audio output balance. Or another application such as iTunes messed with it. It remains a mystery, but thankfully things are back to normal! -
Differnet Final Cut system's outputting audio at different levels.
I recently got a new Mac Pro to update my Final Cut rig.
I have 2 BetaSP machines that are set so -20db tone coming out of FCP hits their VU meters at 0db.
Today I swap out the machines, and the new machine is putting out -20 at a much lower level. So I figure, adjust the machines, go about your business.
Problem is, I have 1000 or so video files that have been mixed with the old system, and while the Tone output from the new FCP is lower, the audio from these files is not.
I've gone through all the settings I can find, and nothing seems to hint that the audio output is adjustable.
Any help is greatly appreciated.Tony Bullard wrote:

In the previous line you mean 'The new machine' is the new MacPro?
And with 'adjust the machines' you mean the BetaSP's?
please be more specific.
Problem is, I have 1000 or so video files that have been mixed with the old system, and while the Tone output from the new FCP is lower, the audio from these files is not.
So you are saying that when you send out a -20db tone out of FCP (on the new MacPro) is coming out lower level than the old mac? And that video files come out on the same audio level on both Macs?
It's digital, so should be the same all the way. Somewhere a setting is wrong.
I've gone through all the settings I can find, and nothing seems to hint that the audio output is adjustable.
It is. Depends what you are looking at.
And what your hardware setup is. How are you going from FCP to the BetaSP deck?
So what's your system setup.
How are you comparing?
Are you aware of the Master slider in the audiomixer? (Option 6). I always keep that on 0. It only applies to sequences or clips that you have opened at that very moment in the Viewer or the Canvas. Is it changed in level somewhere?
Depending on the hardware setup:
Did you check the audio output from the Mac under System Preferences?
Or if you use a Decklink card for output did you check the Audio Processing settings in the Apple > System Preferences > Decklink settings?
Or what other setup do you have?

Apple TV2 missing analog audio output for multi-zone system
Found out the hard way that most receivers can't support digital audio in multiple zones (i.e., Zone 2). Since Apple TV2 (ATV2) dispensed with any analog output, if you have a whole-house system that depends on mult-zone to distribute audio to various speakers, you won't be able to use ATV2 to stream music to anything other than Zone 1. The only outputs are HDMI and optical (both digital audio). I think I found a work around (which, of course costs more money) which is a "de-embedding" device from Atlona that takes HDMI in and splits out the audio to analog and passes the HDMI through to the receiver. The analog audio output then lets me connect to the analog in on the receiver so it can stream to all zones. I figure Apple just didn't have enough real estate on the new product to make room for analog, but it's a pain. Hope this helps someone. If anyone knows a better work-around, I'd love to hear it.
I have the same issue with a MacMini I use for music. My solution was to use an inexpensive optical splitter - one feed to the optical input of my receiver and the second to a DAC. Then run standard RCA audio cables from the DAC to the analog Zone 2 inputs.
Here is a link for a DAC
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=104&cp_id=10423&cs_id=1042302&pid=6884&seq=1&format=2
They should have the splitter as well. -
itunes 11.1.3.8 shows a speaker icon in front of the seclection but it is not playing. the progress bar does not move. there are speakers attached to the system and all other programs do profuce an audio output.
Go to the Edit -> Preferences-> Playback
In The bottom section of the page click the drop down menu by Play Audio Using and select Windows Audio Session or something other than "Direct sound" or whatever it displays. Click Okay. This worked for me! I hope it works for you too!
Thanks,

Can't change audio output in System Preferences
I have installed an M-Audio Firewire Solo interface on my Mac Mini and have made it my default audio output device in System Preferences. When I go to change the audio output back to "Headphones" (the built-in output on the computer), it will not allow me to do so. I click on Headphones, close the window, reopen the window, and the Firewire Solo output is still selected. I'm guessing there's an easy solution to this?
Welcome to the Mac and Apple Discussions.
Open the Preferences folder in the Library folder on the hard drive and look for the files com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist and com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist and perhaps any others. Move them to the desktop and restart or log out and in. The system will rebuild them when it starts up again. You might try removing them one at a time so you are able to identify which is the corrupt .plist file, if in fact it is a .plist problem.
If that doesn’t fix anything, look for similar files with .audio.xxxxxx.plist in your Users Preferences folder: Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences and try removing those. The .plist files usually can be removed without causing problems as they are automatically rebuilt. If it does cause a problem, you can move the originals back to their respective folders from the desktop, replacing the ones that were reconstructed after the restart and you’ll be back to the way it was before you removed them.
And then I’m out of ideas. But keep posting until you get it solved. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people on this forum. If you don’t get any response for a while, respond to your own post with the word “Bump” to get it to the top of the stack again. -
Internal speakers and audio output gone from System preferences
i can't get macbookpro 2010 to recognize internal speakers and audio output. only optical OUTPUT. CAN'T GET ANY SOUND EXCEPT FOR OPTICAL PORT
yes it is on, i have tried reinserting headphone plugs to possibly release micro switch but no avail. i tried resetting PRAM and that also did not work. this just happened over the last day or so. can't figure out what made it do this. i have no optical device, so the switch shouldn't have triggered.

TV off audio output possible to external sound system?
One thing i like about ATV2 is the ability to ;isten to my itunes music.
I havnt bought one yet but wanted to know if it is possible and if so how to have the TV turned off and audio outputed to my external speakers? My current speakers are not SPDIF just anolog inputs
It would seem crazy to have to run the TV screen while I was just listening to music. My TV has HDMI inputs and looks like an optical in as well.
Any comments on best way to set this sort of thing up or do I have to have the TV on?Yes.. If you have a separate av receiver powering your speakers (even if it passes the video signal through). if you just plug external speakers into the TV you turn them off when you turn off the TV.

Asrock ION330/Nvidia HDMI - No audio output
Machine was running archlinux and not been upgraded in over 6mths but HDMI audio worked fine. Decided to do a scratch build since all the changes in that time and have a nice clean system.
If it helps, this is what I install. Ssed this exact same install process for another Asrock ION330 and Acer Revo3610 (both same hardware) but neither use HDMI at all. Both VGA with either optical or analog audio. Both work with no additional config.
pacman -Sy nfs-utils screen ntp alsa-utils mlocate xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-server-utils mesa nvidia ttf-dejavu xfce4 gamin slim mythtv unrar lirc xbmc wget
Get no sound output but also zero errors on any of the following commands. I should add that the receiver does not detect any audio coming in, ie it usually identifies how many channels of audio and type it is receiving.

1/4" with optical audio output
Does anyone actually use the digital audio output? Like in a home theater for Dolby Digital? Does the MBP output DTS?
The digital audio output works great. As an audiophile, it's one of the best things about my MacBook Pro. I use mine to not only connect directly via optical cable (toslink) to an external DAC, I can use my MBP as a digital front end for my audio system. I also use my Airport Express to stream music digitally to my pre-amp. The great thing is there is no signal loss between my MBP (source) and the preamp or DAC. This is completely different from using the audio output jack in an analog manner. The difference is astounding. You can buy an optical cable, also called toslink, fibre optic cable, fibre cable, online or at most big box electronics stores. Not all cables come with the mini adapter though, so make sure to find one that does. Monster makes one for about $40, but you can find them online for as little as $6 (before shipping.) The absolute best deal I found was from PowerMax.com. Delivered, this cable was less than $20! The cabling is small in diameter, but it is high quality and the mini adapter snaps into solidly into place. It is a great product at a great price and will make an extraordinary difference compared to analog. Find it here: http://www.powermax.com/parts/show/serv-922-6540 It's made by MonsterCable (MonsterCable is labeled on the external shielding.) It does come with a mini adapter and will work with all the Apple optical digital inputs and outputs. The digital audio output will export Stereo, Dolby Digital (Stereo, 5.1 and 7.1) and DTS. It's a pure digital signal. I can connect my MBP to my 50" 1080p HDTV and use the optical digital out to output the audio in Dolby Digital 7.1 into my audio system. Awesome! Apple was genius to design the audio jacks (input and output) to accept both an analog and digital cable in the same jack. For less than $20, try it, you'll love it. Also, regarding Apple's Airport Express; I rarely used my Airport Express in an analog manner. I couldn't stand the loss in sound quality. I mean, what's the point of having your music in a lossy format stored on your computer if you can't get that same high quality out of it. Using the Airport Express in an analog manner, the degradation in sound quality isn't even worth it (for me.) As an audiophile, quality (both the recording process and the playback process) are everything. By connecting the Airport Express with an optical cable to my pre-amp or DAC, I use it almost daily to stream music and now can truly used my MBP as a digital front end and music server. It's one of the greatest upgrades ever in my audio system and it was only $20!

My speakers don't show up as an audio output. How do I fix this?
I honestly have to say that everything was fine yesterday, but somehow I can't select my speakers as an audio output. When I searched many forums about this problem, people seem to think there's an option for that in the sound settings. Well take a look at this:
I use Bluetooth headphones for the time being, but that's just an uncomfortable temporary solution. Also, weird enough (yet probably somehow not coincidental) my mic gave up on me as well. I get basically the same screen:
I also have no clue of how to remove that Procaster Audioredirector, and to be honest, it drives both me and my dad completely nuts. Is there anyone who understands this? If so, please do help!Alright, here we go:

Applescript to switch audio output
I am having a little trouble with this applescript which is intended to present a dialog with some choices and switch the audio output accordingly. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've started a gist too.
tell application "System Preferences" to activate
tell application "System Events"
get properties
set asrc to choose from list {"Internal Speakers", "Living Room", "Girl's Room", "Master Bedroom"} with title "Sound Picker" default items {"Internal Speakers"}
display dialog "src is: " & asrc
tell process "System Preferences"
click menu item "Sound" of menu "View" of menu bar 1
delay 2
set theRows to every row of table 1 of scroll area 1 of ¬
tab group 1 of window "sound"
set theOutputs to {} as list
repeat with aRow in theRows
if (value of text field 1 of aRow as text) ¬
is equal to asrc then
set selected of aRow to true
exit repeat
end if
end repeat
end tell
end tell
tell application "System Preferences" to quitHi,
The following script, tested under OS X 10.8.2, should do the trick.
set asrc to (choose from list {"Internal Speakers", "Living Room", "Girl's Room", "Master Bedroom"} with title "Sound Picker" default items {"Internal Speakers"}) as text
if result is "false" then return
display dialog "src is: " & asrc
tell application "System Preferences"
reveal anchor "output" of pane id "com.apple.preference.sound"
activate
tell application "System Events"
tell process "System Preferences"
select (row 1 of table 1 of scroll area 1 of tab group 1 of window "Sound" whose value of text field 1 is asrc)
end tell
end tell
quit
end tell
To have the script run in the background, just comment out the “activate” line above.

Do movie recording with INTERNAL SYSTEM AUDIO [soundflower doesnt help in this case]
Hi, I used to use a screen capturing program called Snapz Pro X. What I liked to do was record myself playing guitar / singing etc. I had my audio come from Logic during the capture so I could have effects on the mic as well as have multiple tracks. I basically opened up photobooth and screen captured the video from there, and used the audio capture to get the Logic audio. For some reason Snapzpro won't let me record internal systme audio anymore so I tried to switch to something else.
I see on this new quicktime you can record video similar to photobooth. When I go to the settings, I only see you can choose microphone. You cant capture system audio. So I downloaded soundflower to re route it. When I do a video record and play something like iTunes it works in the render, but I cant hear the music playing as it is in the recording process. This is the main problem for me.
I want to use soundflower to be able to record whatever audio is coming out of Logic Pro and just use Quicktimes isight for the video. If I change my Logic pro pref in audio output to soundflower and record it works BUT you cant hear audio WHILE recording doing this.
So I basically cant hear anything while recording which defeats the purpose. Keep in mind im not recording anything in logic at all. Im just capturing the audio from the program.
How can I record in a program like photobooth or quicktime for the video part and then be able to have the captured audio from logic pro in it?
And by the way, I am not interested in recording separate things and then combining them in post. I want something quick and easy I can do right on the fly.
ThanksI realized why Snapz Pro audio isnt working now. I just recently got an audio interface, the "Duet 2" from Apogee. I use it to plug in microphones and guitars into my computer.
I just did a test with the in and outputs set to the mbp and the audio worked fine. When I plugged in my interface and tried to capture audio with Snapz Pro, it crashes everytime. I guess it just can't work together.
Screen capturing the isight window is kind of a crumby process to do what I want to do.
If anyone can figure out a way to record video directly from quicktime or photobooth and use the soundflower audio for logic please let me know...it seems like a better process
Thanks
