Processor and Graphics query for G4 PowerMac 'Digital Audio'

Hey all, two questions here...
Question 1
Ive got ANOTHER new processor and graphics card for my Digital Audio G4. The processor i had in it before was a Sonnet Encore ST/G4 1GHz, ive replaced this with the same make of processor but at 1.4GHz. The processor works fine and the machine runs fine, but it isn't listed properly in the system profilers...
In OS9 it's speed is described as "about 656Mhz" and in OSX its described as 0MHz!
Im not too worried since everything seems to be working fine, but i want to be sure that its not going to suddenly blow up on me, and if anyone else has had things like this happen with these processors or configurations. Ive still got the 1GHz should anything go wrong, but newer, more powerful stuff is always good!
Question 2
The new graphics card i put in is a ATI Radeon 9600 Pro PC & Mac Edition. Ive read a few things on the internet about it sometimes not working with DA Power Macs but thought id chance it anyway, i can always sell it on if it didn't work...
Well the card works in both OS9 and OSX and displays everything fine, its recognised by both systems and everything. The only problem is i can't change the display settings, on both systems the only display option ive got is x736 (or whatever it is thats closest to it), there are no other options available, i can't choose anything else in the Recommended menu, not can i change from Thousands to Millions of colours.
Of course its generally agreed that these cards work better on G5s than G4s, despite it saying on the box that it supports G4s. Ive also downloaded the ATI Displays Control Panel to see if i can control it that way, but to no avail. Does anyone have any info or words of advice on this?
Cheers all!

Good to hear, thanks!
Do follow the advice to add as much cooling as you can, & use the best Ceramique Thermal Paste you can find.
Did you clear all the Caches yet?
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
Just sits there occupying very little space & never interfering, unless you need to invoke it in Single User Mode.
Look for the 10.3 version of AppleJack 1.4.3.1 (326 KB) (For Mac Jaguar and Panther), here...

  • Processor and graphics card upgrade for hp dc5100 MT(EF633US)

Can someone kindly tell me a variety of Intel processors and graphic cards which i can install in my pc coz right now i'm using Intel pentium 4 CPU 2.80 GHz and Intel 82915G/GV/910GL express chipset. but i would like to upgrade to a faster processor and a graphics card which can play games which require large graphic memory (eg FIFA 2013,GTA 5.etc)

    Hi:
Personally, I wouldn't invest the money to upgrade that PC.
You would be better off getting an off lease newer dc5800 MT or dc7800/dc7900 model that has a PCIe x16 video slot.
The killer for your model is you can only install a PCI graphics card.
Very inefficient and pretty expensive for what you get in return.
After you install the required microcode update, the best processor I know for sure you can install would be the P4 650.
Below is the link to the quickspecs.  The supported processors are listed on page 7.
I do not know of anyone who that has installed the 651 or 661 processors and got them to work--even though the specs state they are supported.
You can try the 651 or 661 and if you do, please let me know if they worked for you.

  • Can I upgrade my processor and graphics card in my HP Pavilion g6-2244sa Notebook PC?

Hi I bought this laptop 2 years ago for gaming purposes and school work. I was told by the shop assistant that it can run most fo your big games such as Call Of Duty and FIFA. Well frankly i was lied to and this laptop struggles to even play the simplest game Minecraft a game about pixelated blocks that you destroy and place and this can't even run it I am very annoyed about this and seeing if i can upgrade the machine never crossed my mind until now. So i am asking to see if it would be possible to upgrade the Hardware of this machine mainly the processor and graphics card, here are the specs of my laptop:
Processor- AMD E2-1800 APU w/ Radeon HD graphics (2CPUs) (1.80)GHz
Graphics Card - AMD Radeon HD 7340G
    RAM - 8Gb
    Memory - 1Tb
Now I am wondering if this machine's processor and graphic's card can be upgraded and if so what would be the price of it and where would be the best place and if the cost is too much would i be better off buying a new machine?
If you need more specs reply with the ones you need and i'll get them for you thank you for the help!

Put this way if that system isn't costing you 2,000US or more then it will not play Call Of Duty and FIFA regardless of what the store sales person says. To play those games your laptop has to fall into the catgory called "Gaming Laptop" Specs and those come with cost and weight to show for it. Your laptop is only good at low games resolution and will not handle graphics intensive games. Those requires Gaming Laptop specs those cost money to be had. So if you still want to Game COD style you need to put down the cash for serious Game Laptop to perform under pressure. Forget about upgrading your current system what you want is a Serious Gaming Laptop if your going to play COD.

  • Recommend compatible PSU and graphics card for P35D3?

Recommend compatible PSU and graphics card for P35D3?
This weekend I’ll be taking my rig to a PC repair shop and ask them to swap out my PSU and my graphics card.
Because I’ve RMA’d all the components (see signature) several members of different forums, and the tech support of the various components, seem to think that my boot problem is because of a compatibility issue with either my Ultra X3 600W PSU or my XFX 8600 GT and my P35D3.
I need to be ready to make decision, without having time to research, if the repair tech recommends a replacement.
    Here’s my considerations:
I selected the Ultra because it's both modular and 85% efficient (it also has the required 8-pin cable to power the P35D3's CPU and it has SATA power cables.
I selected the XFX 8600 GT card because it is dual-link (2 DVI outs -- Dell 30” & Viewsonic 19”) and it has no fan, and is DX10 ready. I’m not attached to the idea of no fan. I’m a speed freak but not a gamer or an over clocker--I like the option of trying out games.
Both the Ultra and the XFX are somewhat medium priced.
If the repair tech discovers that other PSUs or graphic cards work then I might be able to get Ultra or XFX to accept a return. Neither company accepted my offer to pay extra to exchange mine for another better model.
    Suggestions please.
    Thank you,
    Kerry

  • Processor and Graphics Card Upgrade For HP ProBook 4445s

    Hey guys,
I wanted to ask that  I have a HP4445s with the A6 4400m processor and don't find it enough to play games.
The processor is a little bit slow and the graphics are kind of horrible for a gamer.
I feel like upgrading to a new processor.
The one that  I found nice is the
    AMD FD8350FRHKBOX FX-8350 FX-Series 8-Core Black Edition Processor
I just wanted to ask whether I could upgrade to this.
I also wanted to find out that it says that there are no integrated graphics, so does that mean I will have to purchase a new graphic card?
    Thanks,
    Please reply!

That is a desktop processor and will not fit in any laptop. Right now some of the HP Support pages are down but I believe you can install an A10 AMD CPU which would improve the graphics just a little. There is no graphics "card" as you might be thinking of. It is a flat motherboard inside the laptop case with all the chips including video soldered on that board. The video comes from within the processor working with helping chips on the motherboard. An A10 processor provides slightly better graphics but nothing that will increase the gaming potential very much. That is a business laptop for doing Powerpoints and Spreadsheets and maybe watching a youtube video or playing a DVD. It is not a gamer. HP now makes the Omen laptop at about $1500 which would handle most high end games.

  • Where can I get a new replacement motherboard and graphics card for HP Tx2 touchsmart 1340ea? Cost?

my computer has been getting either blue screen of death, or your machine has been turned off to save your computer or pixels jumping around across screen, so on white screen was getting streaks of blue from top to bottom and on black streaks of red dancing about, OR no screen at all - blank.
Now machine won't even boot up.  This all happened both on cable and wireless.   Product no VJ667EA #    TX2 Touchsmart 1340ea.
There have been no upgrades of hardware , and on software front only thing is regular updates of windows.  It was running Windows 7 64 bit professional.
It is now totally dead.  If you try to boot up you get the electric symbol light up, and caps lock and end /number lock light up and flash... thats it.
We just tried to blow out dust that is all.  I have a nasty feeling HP doesn't want to sell any parts and only bothered about selling folks like me  a new machine which I am not going to buy.    This one didn't last more than 18 months, just long enough to be out of guarantee.  Here's hoping I am wrong and there are replacement motherboards and graphics cards (it

    You're very welcome.
What seems to be unfair is I can buy that motherboard directly from HP in the USA as you saw, but for whatever reason you can't buy it directly from HP in the UK.
I still think you would be better off checking out what related notebooks may be for sale out there on eBay UK.
I buy all my PC's on eBay in used condition for great bargains. I do limit myself to the business PC's and notebooks that HP makes, however.
Best of luck in whatever you decide to do.

  • Sound and graphics drivers for Satellite P200-1EE and Windows XP

    Hello all,
I just bought a new Sattelite P200-1EE. I had it downgraded to Windows XP Service Pack 2. from Vista.
    I have two problems:
    1. I cannot find the graphics driver for the ATI Radeon Mobility HD2600 for Windows XP. When I hit the link,
I get an "could not connect to remote server".
    2. I cannot get the sound driver to work. In fact, I can't even see the sound card. Ishel there something else I need to install?
    Thanks for any help

    Regarding the point;
    1) It looks like a driver server issue possibly the guys maintain the server. I would recommend checking this in next few days.
    2) First of all you have to update the XP to the latest state. All available MS hotfixes for XP must be installed. Very important are these patches; KB888111 and KB835221. You have to install these patches before the sound driver installation.
    Best regards

  • A whine (and veiled query for advice)

A longish time ago, in a state far away.....
I had a license to Photoshop, the bee's knees of creative software.
(an even longer time ago, in another universe, I used PageMaker 1.0 on a Mac 512 with internal and extermal floppy drives and no hard disc, and THAT was the original "bee's knees of software" moment... but I digress)
I take my time upgrading, because I don't make (most of) my living using creative software, though I love it, and because (truth be told) I'm cheap.
So when I got around to upgrading my old PS license, Creative Suite was out. As I recall, it required an upgrade of my MacOS, which I intended to do, but put off. Shortly after I actually ordered the new software, CS2 had come out. I called and asked about a boost to CS2 for the price of shipping; it was granted. So far so good. I rec'd a package. It said something about Creative Suite 2 Premium. Not being a regular upgrader (nor indeed a regular purchaser of any software), I assumed I would only be able to access the Photoshop upgrade installation, based on my prior serial number. I tried to install. I got an error. I phoned support. The gentleman asked what package I had. I told him.
He said, "Oh, they sent you an upSELL package, not an upgrade."
    "Oh?" says I.
"Yes. Tell you what I'm gonna do: I'm going to unlock the whole thing for you, for free."
I thanked him profusely and danced a merry jig....
....LITTLE KNOWING what a mess I had gotten myself into.
As is common knowledge, somewhere in recent years, an upgrade of the MacOS made CS2 effectively incompatible with operating system; Adobe Bridge was rendered inoperable on my Mac, while the main applications slllllooooooooowwwwwweeeeeedddddd wwwwwaaaaaaaaayyyyyy dddddooooooowwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnn.
So I've been limping along, in my cheap-******* way, trying to be patient with the software (I'm still only at OS 10.5.8, afraid of what Snow Leopard might do to my fragile software stalemate). But here's the thing: I do so little professional work, that I can hardly justify the $700ish to upgrade from CS2 to 5 (I know, "Where were you for CS3 and 4? Well, if I'd bought those, too, I'd be out EVEN MORE money now, wouldn't I?).
And here's another thing: I HATE ILLUSTRATOR. I know, the flagship vector art app. But I confess I was a FreeHand man--- especially waaaay back when v 4.0 came out (back when cell phones were still "neat-o" and dinosaurs roamed the earth), and I have never understood Illustrator. Just didn't click with me. And then damn Adobe went and bought out Macromedia (last version of FreeHand I had was 7, before the MacroMedia buy-out), and what happened to the best of FreeHand? Toilet, that's what. (I don't really know what happened, but that's my infrequent-buyer perspective.)
And here's another-nother thing: I'm old school (in case you missed that point), and all these apps are so complex, I really need training. I'm not dumb, I've been a Mac tech and advanced user for decades (I absolutely rely on a tablet--- doesn't that make me at least sorta cool??)--- I just don't use it enough to justify what--- with the requisite training--- is now REALLY EXPENSIVE SOFTWARE.
I use Photoshop quite often. I have loved (early) PageMaker, and really got good with QuarkXPress, and am tolerating InDesign, but....
The last "here's-the-thing" thing: I use to love Adobe. Thought their heads and hearts were aligned, and their products well-designed. Now.... well, they're just a really big software company, at odds with Apple. Crazy, or what? The two modern personal computing companies that MADE EACH OTHER'S FORTUNES (too strong?), bickering like pre-teen siblings. Anyway....
What's a feller to do? I must have Photoshop, I REALLY REALLY want a good page layout program. It'd be FUN to have the other stuff (I DO use Acrobat, though not to its fullest potential); love to learn about web design. But don't really have the money to prioritize for those bits. I'm getting so pissed off with the crankiness of CS2 on my Mac that I'm almost ready to chuck it (and the small income I make from using the products, for clients who are often personal friends of mine).
    Any thoughts to share??
Thanks for reading. You have the skill of listening. That's invaluable in this world.
    Cheers,
    Ben in Ohio

As long as you have a valid serial number for CS2 and an Intel Mac you can upgrade to CS5.
Whether it would be worth it to you, nobody can answer.

  • Powermac digital audio two displays

with a ATI RAGE 128 Pro graphics card, the one standard on the digital audio powermac. it has the ADC connection and a VGA. does that card support dual displays? would you be able to connect an apple studio monitor to the ADC port and also power a VGA monitor?

    Hi, Alarkia -
The original ATI RAGE 128 Pro card does not support two monitors. It is designed for one monitor, but comes with two different connectors to facilitate connecting different kinds of monitors.
Adding a second monitor to that card is not a good idea - best case, the second monitor will mirror the first; worst case, the card will fry.
You can replace the original AGP card with a newer one which is dual monitor capable; or add a PCI card in an available PCI slot to support one or more additional monitors. Doing this will also allow the additional monitor(s) to be used in extended-desktop mode.

  • Mac OS 9.1 for PM G4 digital audio

I have a PowerMac G4 digital audio and want to install Mac OS 9.1 on it. That particular machine requires a version of 9.1 with ROM 6.7.1, different than the standard 9.1 installation disk.
Anyone have a lead as to where I could obtain the correct disk (or, download that particular ROM)?

Did you ever find a copy of this OS?
In a similar boat here, the only way I can get all of the software/drivers that I need to work is to run OS 9.1 - so I am trying to replace my 2x1Ghz G4 running 9.2.2 with a 733MHz G4 DA... bought one off of eBay because the guy said he would include the 9.1 disc (even though it was running 10.4),  well, after I paid he wrote and said he couldnt find the disk.  I called Apple and they said that I could get a replacement disc from them (for $12?) so I told the guy I would take it anyhow (and he said he found the disc)  ... well, got the computer and the included disc was for an iMac, no big deal, called Apple - and this time the person says that they no longer carry that OS - and there's nothing he can do (this was like 5 days later so I can see how things would change).   So now I have a whole lot of crap that I can't use - and really no where to turn ... I have been looking for this disc for months now.

  • Swap Processor from G4 Quicksilver 80Mhz to G4 Digital Audio 466Mhz

If I swap the processor from quicksilver 800mhz and put it in my digital audio 466 mhz G4 will it work?
    g4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi
it is actually possible, although whether it's worth the effort I'm not sure.
The CPU upgrades database at www.xlr8yourmac.com contains a number of reports from people who have installed a Quicksilver processor in a Digital Audio (select Apple AGP Slot for the Mac Model and Apple for the card manufacturer).
Both have a 133MHz system bus so the processor will run at the same speed (800MHz) without having to fiddle with the resistors that control the bus multiplier ratio.
The main issue though is the Quicksilver processor card requires a 12 volt feed to one of the screws that secure it to the logic board, although this can be taken from a spare hard drive molex power connector.
There are also possible heat issues, as the Quicksilver has a small fan between the processor heat sink and back of the case, where as I don't think the 466MHz Digital Audio has a processor fan at all.
    I hope this helps.

  • Solaris 10 x86 5/08 audio driver for SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio

Hello out there, I recently installed Solaris 10 x86 5/08 on my IBM ThinkPad T60 (2007-63U) and I'm really impressed how well it is working.
The only thing I've found not working so far is the audio.
I've installed the Solaris Audio Drivers 1.0 from:
    http://www.sun.com/download/index.jsp?cat=Hardware%20Drivers&tab=3&subcat=Audio%20Devices
...but it still is not recognizing the audio device.
Everything else is working great (thank you Sun and the OpenSolaris Community!!!!!!!), so getting the audio working would be even better.
Any pointers anyone has on what to look for on the system (e.g. in /var/adm/messages) or how to configure the audio to support the SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio would be greatly appreciated.

...well, I've tried building oss-v4.0-build1016-src-cddl but I haven't been able to get it to work.
In preparation for the build, I did install Sun Studio 12 (from http://developers.sun.com/sunstudio/index.jsp ), patched it, and installed gawk-3.1.6 ( from http://www.sunfreeware.com/indexintel10.html ) and ran configure/make install as instructed which successfully completed.
The following is what I get when executing ossdetect:
    ================================================================================

To note, the Solaris 10 x86 5/08 installation I am running on is the full distribution +OEM.
I also cannot find the "soundon" or "soundoff" scripts referenced in the OSS build instructions.
    Any pointers would be appreciated.

  • RAM for a G4 (Digital Audio) 467 MHz?

    Hi,
The mac I use at work is (I think!) a G4 (Digital Audio) 467MHz model running OSX 10.3.9 Panther. My employer has said he will consider ordering more RAM for the computer and has asked me to do the legwork. Ideally I want to max out the RAM on this computer because it's unlikely my employer will be replacing it any time soon.
From reading this forum, I gather that Macs can be picky about RAM - I'd like your recommendations about what/how much to buy. Currently two slots have RAM of different sizes - am I correct that the computer will work more efficiently if all the slots have the same size RAM?
Here are the specs for the computer:
    Hardware:

Thanks in advance for your recommendations!
    frano

Your G4 DA uses 168-pin PC-133 (unregistered, non-ECC, non-parity) SDRAM. A 16-chip (8 chips on each side), 512 MB DIMM is the largest that's supported in each memory slot. As long as the SDRAM meets the criteria, it doesn't need to be purchased from a Mac memory dealer, although you may have fewer compatibility problems (since some memory merchants aren't really familiar with Mac memory requirements). Unlike some PCs, Mac OS X doesn't run well with inexpensive/marginal quality memory, so your choice shouldn't be based on price alone. You can check out this dealer's prices, and compare prices at Ramseeker.com.
As far as mixing memory having different density chips, you may find a performance boost by using similar-density memory. A 512 MB DIMM with 16 chips and a 256 MB DIMM with 8 chips both have 256-Megabit chips. A 16-chip 256 MB DIMM and an 8-chip 128 MB DIMM have 128-Megabit chips. A 16-chip 128 MB DIMM has 64 Megabit chips. If your 128 MB DIMM is low-density memory, having more than 8 chips (either on one side, or 4 on each side), I'd remove it and replace it with something larger.

    Hello Niel
Thanks. I didn't realize that I can get up to a TB! Wow! What type of TB do I buy, any suggestions of specific ones? Is there G5 specific Tb disks to install? Or just any as long as they have the right measurement size? And what size do I need to remain within?

  • What is the best graphics card for my Powermac G5

    Hello every1 @ discussions.apple.com!
I am thinking about upgrading my Graphics card. Currently I have a radeon 9600 in My powermac G5 (early 2005 2.3 ghz dual), it works fine but its a bit slow and drops frames on anything HD. I have been looking around and the best card that i will not need to flash/format to work would probably be a NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT DDL (I really dont want to have to flash the card as it seems like a slightly complicated process and i would like to keep within all the manufacturers warranties). My main goal is to obtain the best card possible for HD video editing or viewing. I was wondering if there where any superior cards available for my mac that would serve those purposes better.
    Many thanks in advance.
    All the best.

The performance differences vary by software in use.
Some software runs better with a Geforce, other with a Radeon.
The Radeon cards will do better with games, but the Geforce will likely do better with 3D and pro apps.

As far as viewing HD, any one of the cards will give additional horsepower.
I use a Geforce 6800 GT and a Radeon X800 and I don't see any difference between the two with regard to handling video.
Of course, the two cards do much better than the Radeon 9800 series or other offerings OEM.
After that, it's all up to the CPU, free space on the boot drive and RAM.
Oh, yes, one other benefit of the Geforce is two DVI ports.
The OEM Radeon cards each have one ADC, one DVI.
