Processor benchmark question

Hi - does anyone know of any benchmark data comparing G5 power to the new Core 2 Duo? I have a dual 1.8 G5 PowerMac and I'm interested in the new 24" iMac. I understand that the iMac processor is a "laptop" version and not the "conroe" - just curious if it is less tha, equal too or greater in power to what i have. Thanks.
Steve

The Intel dual cores are about the same performance as a Dualcore Powermac G5 2.5
http://www.systemshootouts.org/processors.html
However, they are hoobled by a slow bus, the iMac is not upgradable with faster boot drives or video cards like the PowerMac G5 is.
I doubt very much you'll see a noticeable improvement between your machine and a Intel dual core iMac for general use. Perhaps it could shave some time if your doing something longterm processor intensive.
But you'll have to buy all new universal versions of your software.
Wait for the Dual Quads and BlueRay DVD drives to come out, yea 8 cores and 100GB per dvd disk, that's worth upgrading for.
The pitiful little iMac performance increase is not worth the cash.

  • G5 Processor replace questions...

    Hello all,
    I have a early 05 build G5, and after I power up, after 20 - 30 mins the fans kick into overdrive and the comp freezes. I took it to apple yesterday and was told that more than likely it was the processor, which is a common problem with this model. He also said it may be the logic board too.
    My question is, i have a 2.0ghz processor that i guess i need to replace, can i replace it with a higher processor compatible with my model? Say a 2.3ghz. And how difficult is it to replace a processor yourself?
    All feedback is greatly appreciated....

    If you thrash around ebay you will find some cpu's for $100-$200 and some used G5s for $300-$500+. There are also several companies replacing G5 CPUs for around $500. You've got to get a compatible CPU which will require 3 of the last 4 letters of the part number printed on the CPU. Whether it's all worth it is up to you. Here's a take apart guide: http://macinzebox.blogspot.com/2008/07/apple-service-source-manuals.html
    Note that if you do decide to trade out a cpu, you (or Apple certified tech) will need to run the Apple Service Diagnostic 2.5.8 to calibrate the fans.
    My machine did the same thing as yours, went to apple etc. - same diagnosis. I was able to turn off the lower (bad) CPU with open firmware commands and now it's running on 1 processor. I did remove and replace the lower processor (re-seat), it was a little intimidating, but not difficult.

  • Processor Upgrade Questions

    I've seen Xserve dual 1GHz (133MHz) bus processor modules on ebay.
    Question 1. Will these work in a low end 1GHz single cpu MDD (FW800)?
    Question 2. What kind of, if any, speed increase would there be?

    Yes, it should work just fine, seeing how you have the same 133 MHz bus. You would see a pretty sizeable speed increase because you would be spreading the load between two processors insteadn of cramming it all on one. I know that my dual 1 GHz PM blows away my iBook which has a 200 MHz advantage in CPU speed but only one CPU.

  • Checking My Processor - stupid question?

    Hi there,
    Forgive me if this is a stupid question. I've got an MBP Core 2 Duo 2.33 15.4" with 4Gb RAM.
    I'm confused over something. When I look at Istat Pro in the Temp section I'm only getting a listing for CPU-A. As the processor is a dual core, should I be getting a CPU-B? If so how can I do a test to see if something is wrong?
    Thanks in advance.
    Simon

    Look in Activity Monitor (Applications/Utilities) and see the CPU tab - are there two graphs of processor activity? Each corresponds with a single core. Also, it is possible that the program just doesn't read the temperature sensor for the other CPU, or there simply isn't one present.

  • Image Processor Error Question

    Hello,
    I am trying t ouse Image Processor for the first time and I get an error that say's
    Server Interface Error "Step1Icon':375
    Does anyone know what that means?
    Hugs,

    I"m using PSCS5.1 I've reinstalled it twice now and thinking I may have to reinstall it again?   NO NO NO...I have not on purpose removed or trashed anything I am good playing with PS I've been doing it for years but I'm about a ZERO when it comes to being able to do anything else with the computer.
    I use Windows 7.
    I will try the ctrl-alt-shift.
    OK C.Pfaffenbichler..... YOU ROCK! it worked!

  • Fundamental processor use question

    Hi folks,
    I am encoding a Motion file to Sorenson 3 and decided to open Activity Monitor since it said a long time to process. What I cannot fundamentally understand is why Motion is only using 23% of my Core Duo processors in my MacBook Pro. How can I get it to use 98% and decrease the time to encode? Seems like a LOT of wasted processor cycles.
    Any thoughts?
    BTW, my MBPro encodes faster than my dual 2 GHz G5

    Motion does not use the CPU for much. Keeping track of particle locations. stuff like that. It almost ENTIRELY uses the GPU - weak graphics card, weak speed. Powerful Graphics card, huge speed.
    A friend was using an nVidia Fx5200. He recently replaced it with an ATI 9800, his speed went up 10 times. For about $100 bucks.
    Motion is ALL about the GPU... Always has been.

  • Processor Performance Question

    I'm a new Mac user and there's something I don't get:
    I bought this MacBook last week (2.0MHz) and its performance is awesome.
    The thing is that I downloaded this processor temp checker and it says that the current frequency is 1.5MHz. Should I trust this? How could I double check?
    Thanks.

    Under this energy scheme the processor shuold step up and down in processor speed based on CPU demand. The 1.5GHz figure that is being reported is more than likely right. What you can do is run a processor intensive task and it should step up to 2GHz.

  • Processor Replacement question

    I will be increasing my HD capacity soon and was thinking it may be a good time to upgrade the 933mhz processor too.
    Is there anything in particular I should be looking for (or beware of) in a new processor?
    Thanks!

    First, you'll have to decide which is most important to you:
    - absolute performance, which comes at great cost, and may involve some geekish firmware updates, and software drivers, or
    - moderate performance, at relatively low cost and minimal install hassles.
    I chose the later when I put a FastMac 1.5GHz 7455 CPU in my 2001 Quicksilver G4. Considering the processor speed of 1.5 GHz is not that much higher than the 867 MHz processor it replaced, I was still quite pleased with the performance gain I got for $200 (now expect to pay $260) ... of course there is more to performance than just CPU speed - good luck in figuring out the relative merits of the various on-chip RAM configurations used by the CPU upgrade manufacturers!
    http://fastmac.com/g4.php
    Best of all, it requires no software drivers, so I don't have to worry about some future Mac OS update obsoleting my CPU. FastMac does recommend a firmware update for some models, but I didn't need it.
    Things may have changed since I researched the available products back in late 2006, but at that time the installation instructions for several name brand CPU upgrades required booting into OS 9 for firmware updates, and/or installing software drivers all of which sounded intimidating to me.
    If you are looking for things to worry about, there may also be issues with getting rid of the extra heat produced by the replacement CPU, but that has not ben an issue for me.

  • HETIS 865G Giga P4 processor support question

    I bought Hetis 865G GIGA Barebone. It do not work with Intel Celeron processors - the mainboard can't initialize with Celeron. MSI on-site specification tells me about only 533/800 Mhz Bus and Pentium 4 support. Printed manual tells me about 400/533/800 Mhz Bus and NorthWood/Prescott processors support. Where is the truth? I have Intel P4 256K L2 Processor (Wilamette?). Is it possible to install it in HETIS 865G GIGA?

  • Creating word processor gui question

    Hi
    I'm trying to create a word processor gui and I'm new to Java so I'm very new to working with guis. I'm trying to create a menu bar and use Jtextarea so that the user would be able to type in multiple lines of text. I'm completely confused with how to do bc I've been trying and trying but seem to have a problem with my main class and my default constructor. any tips on how to get started?
    my main class looks like this {
    WordProcessorDemo f = new WordProcessorDemo();
    f.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
    f.pack();
    f.setVisible(true);
    f.setSize(800, 600);
    f.setTitle("Word Processor");}
    and it gives me this error msg :
    java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: illegal component position
         at java.awt.Container.addImpl(Container.java:325)
         at java.awt.Container.add(Container.java:252)
         at javax.swing.JMenu.add(JMenu.java:511)
         at wordprocessor.WordProcessorDemo.<init>(WordProcessorDemo.java:62)
         at wordprocessor.WordProcessorDemo.main(WordProcessorDemo.java:18)

    That code is not causing the problem. Look at line 62 in your constructor
    at wordprocessor.WordProcessorDemo.<init>(WordProcessorDemo.java:62)
    You are adding something to a JMenu
    at javax.swing.JMenu.add(JMenu.java:511)
    and it's not liking your parameters or something

  • KT3 Ultra Deluxe Processor Upgrade Question

    I purchased a Computer, custom built by a local shop(before I got into the spyware/virus removal business and woulda possibly tried to build my own) a few years back, and it has been a great system except that now the one online game I play, Everquest, is running slow when 30+ players are on the screen.   Other friends with brand new computers experience no lag/choppyness...  The lag is only experienced with multiple players on screen.
    With some friends, we have decided that it is not my Video card or anything else in the system, but the processor that needs upgrading.
    I have :
    AMD AthlonXP 1800(1507mhz in bios i think)
    MSI KT3 Ultra Deluxe(VIA KT333 chipset based) (it has RAID, so im assuming the ARU model)
    1024mb PC2100 or PC2700 ram..(not sure how to check)
    NVidia GeforceFX5500 256mb Video
    Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy
    Maxtor 7200rpm 40gb hard drive on Raid IDEs(set as dummy IDEs, not RAID)
    Maxtor 7200rpm 80gb hard drive on Raid IDEs(set as dummy IDEs, not RAID)
    Lite on 16x DVD-Rom drive(Primary IDE master)
    Plextor 8/4/4/2/12 DVD-RW PX-708A(Secondary IDE Master)
    Originally windows98 installed by the store.
    Reformatted twice and Windows 2000 installed presently.
    a SMC $10 junk NIC that I will be replacing with a 3com cause im tired of it after 2months(my good netgear FA311 went bad)
    What I am wanting a definite answer on, is whether I can stick a 2600mhz, 333 Barton Athlon XP in this.
    I have searched the forums and most topics say yes/no... 50/50...  so im confused.
    Is it possible to put the 2600 in there...  will that even help...  on player movement/etc in the game..(a friend with a similar system and a Radeon X800 Pro 256mb sees no difference and has similar lag to me(only in large player raids with multiple players on screen))
    I am just trying to see if I can spend $100 to throw a Barton 333 2600mhz in here and I think that should help it..
    or if I have to spend $250+ to possibly get a new PS, ram, processor/mobo the works.
    So.. is it possible?
    How much work would be put into it, besides
    Turn system off, unscrew the fan/heatsink, pop the processor out
    put the new processor in.
    Put the new heatsink/fan on
    start the system?
    Or is there going to be alot of.....  BIOS work involved.

    Friend has very similar system
    1700 AthlonXP
    1gig ram
    ATI Radeon X800 256mb(a premier card I thought?   as in performance) Pro
    He experiences lag/choppiness same as me, at times with 30+ users on the screen/game.
    I had read that officially Barton was impossible, im just asking if there is anyway to put a barton on it and will it work/how much work will it end up needing.
    266mhz 2600s arent available anywhere I look....   no 266mhz is actually..
    So Im just fearing ill need to upgrade the entire motherboard too.. and may be better off getting a new barebones kit.
    Its not gradual... its just when 30 players/characters are on the screen.... especially when they move... it gets choppy, take the number down to 10... and its lag free/choppy free.
    5v and 3.3v = 245 max watts
    5v, 3.3v and 12v = 380 max watts
    115/230 Volts
    3.3=28A
    5=40A
    12=18A
    The NIC is being ordered as im typing this...   hopefully a 3com NIC will provide better power than a SMC 10$ replacement for my netgear FA311...
    It has to be either the NIC or the processor.
    The reason for this im just saying.. is my friend has sound blaster audigy, similar processor(1700), cheap nic, a MSI mobo, not sure if its Ultra3 or not... and has very similar issues to me, despite throwing $350 down on that Radeon X800 256mb Pro, supposedly the best video card you can get.
    It didnt relieve hardly any of his lag... and hes quite....   happy about it... /sarcasm

  • G56 processor compatibility questions

    hi
    i have a g56 106sa and im hoping to upgrade the processor from the athlon 2 to this
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TMRM72DAM22GG-2-1Ghz-PC-Laptop-AMD-Turion-64-X2-dual-CPU-Socket-638-S1-Pro...
    the laptop is well out of its warranty period
    what im worried about is will the bios allow this upgrade ? and are there any other factors that might stand in the way ?
    thanks, alex

    Not sure why you are thinking this is an upgrade. The two processors are very similar: 2.1 ghz dual core AMDs with dual 512kb L2 cache. Here is a head to head comparison showing the Athlon II is actually a bit more capable:

  • Compressor 3.0.3 benchmark question

    Hi,
    Am currently transcoding an 8 min (1.55 GB) file which is a self contained fcp quicktime to a quicktime mov file using the h.264 compressor setting. It is incredibly slow... 33% done at 58 minutes and counting. It doesn't seem to be hung, just interminably slow. Is this normal? My activity monitor is showing compressortranscoder not responding. Does this have an effect on efficiency?
    Original footage was hdv...
    outputting to mov with h.264
    all original settings...
    Did a few test runs with 30 sec clips and they worked fine
    compressor handled 30 sec clip (90 MB) in 4.5 mins... But is really struggling with this larger file size.
    Any input appreciated
    Cheers!

    In the Compressor preset, If you have set Frame Controls to BEST (Resize and Rate), the render times can be extremely long.
    Try dialing them back to "Better". If you need something quickly, turn them off all together.
    Depending on the source material and the playback size, the visual difference may not be worth the increased wait.

  • Benchmark question

    We are evaluating a vendor whose software product will be loading large numbers of records (10,000 to 250,000) into an Oracle database running on an NT server. Can anyone give me an idea (ASAP) as to how long we should expect this to take? For example, if the vendor says their product can load 250,000 records in one hour, is this good or bad? I only need a rough idea, and as quickly as possible, please.
    Many thanks,
    Larry
    null

    I can not help you with the estimation but I want you to give me my idea.
    In my idea it is important what YOU expect of the loading time. If for you 1 hour is acceptable then it can be OK. It all depends on how fast you want to have the records available in the database and when it can/must be done.
    A reflection that you have to make is how the loading time will change after you are working with it for let us say half a year. What is fast now with little data can be slow with a lot of data in the database.
    Are you evaluating other vendors?
