Processor fan speed: is this value normal?

 Hi,
I own a Pentium 4 2.4 GHz mounted with the standard cooler that came on the "in-a-box" package. All this is mounted on an MSI 845PE Max2 FIR.
I'm reading CPU Fan rotation of about 2700RPM. Someone told me that this should be a lot higher (something near 4500RPM). Is this true?
By the way, I installed the SpeedFan software and tried to modify the rotating speed of some fans, but it didn't make any effect. Does my motherboard support this feature?
 Best regards,
 Norberto

  • MSI P6NGM-L system temperature and processor fan speed

    Hi folks,
I've got a MSI P6NGM-L board that is reaching a system temperature of 46ºC-47ºC at everyday load (not playing games or doing heavy work... just browsing, email, text editor, etc). My case has got a frontal and rear 120mm (exaustor) fan, and my processor (Core 2 Duo E7200), an Akasa AK-965BL cooler. My graphics board is a XFX Geforce 9800GT with Zalman FC-ZV9 cooler. Overall temperature is just fine, except for the system temperature, that is 32ºC when the system is turned on and is cold, and reaches about 47ºC after some time and using. I disabled the onboard NVIDIA on BIOS, but that didn't make any difference. Is that temperature OK for my configuration, or somehow high?
I thought about taking off the northbridge heatsink and applying Arctic Silver 5 in it, but I don't know if that would make any difference, and it would give me a big job, because I would have to take the board off... so I don't know if it's worth.
Another question, is P6NGM-L board PWM compatible? I tried using speedfan to control the processor's temperature but it says it's at 100%, and I know the cooler is in silent operation. If so, what software should I use to control the processor fan?
    Thanks for any help

I don't have a way to measure my room's temperature, but it's quite hot... something like 26ºC.
I thought that with all the cooling I've got inside my case the system temp would get lower, but it is still the same under normal load, even since my case had only one exaustor and stock coolers.
What about the processor's fan speed? Can I really change it by software? I plan to do some overclocking, so I would like to do tests with the processor cooler in full speed... I've googled all the way around, but couldn't find substancial information about P6NGM-L support for that.
    Thanks

  • Imac Intel Fan Speed/Air flow - Whats normal?

    Hi,
I have had a intel imac for about a month now, and it is quiet. The air flow coming out of the back slot is warm air, BUT you can hardly feel the flow..
and now i have set up a another imac for someone at work and have a few more to do.
Anyway this other imac when started the fan was loud, not tooo loud but you could really hear it, BUT the airflow was cool air and it felt right that it should be cool air coming out and you could really feel the air. But now that i have moved it to another desk and put ram in it, and started it, the fan has quieted down like my imac and the air flow is warm and much warmer on the top left of the air vent slot.
    - So what is right?, should we be able to hear the fan, or not?
    - Should the air flow be cool or warm?
    - Should you be able to feel the flow on your hand?
    - Is the fan on a sensor, ie if it gets hot it works harder...
Both imacs are now quiet, one is more warm/hot than the other (as it is brand new), i think over time it will cool down....
    - or it is pot luck what happens with them?
    - Also if i get a temperature widget what would be normal
    regarding the reading ?

  • What's normal range temperature and fan speed for a 27" iMac?

    I have a new iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), 3.4 GHz Intel Core i5, 8GBs ram, and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2048 MB.
Smc fan control reads up to about 131°F and around 1200rpm fan. Is this within normal range? At what point should I be worried?
    Thanks

1200 rpm is the minimum fan speed according to iStat Menus and other sources. If your fans are at the minimum that means your system is not concerned about the temperature. On my system currently the fans are at minimum (1199rpm) and the temperature is 104°F. The room ambient temperature is 74°F. Your system looks normal to me. By the way, my system is also a 27-inch late 2013 iMac with the 3.5ghz I7 CPU. The Haswell CPUs are very efficient and low power.

  • [Solved] Asus L1366 mobo, cpu fan speed control

    Hi, everyone,
I finally have this new core i7 system, to replace my old AMD athlonx2.  I have one question about the CPU fan speed control.
I remember that in my old system, the cpu fan speed control works out of box, no configuration is needed.
But when I install arch 64 on this new i7 system, the cpu fan is running at its maximum speed constantly while the CPU temperature is modestly low. I know there is a wiki teaching how to do it.
However, I am just curious why it doens't work out of box any more? Does CPU fan control work for you guys out of box normally? especially the new Core i7 cpu users?
Please let me know, really appreciated it.
    Thanks a lot.
Update: the issue is solved, see my last post, the solution is blacklisting: asus_atk0110, instead use w83667hg.
    Cheers.

First off, it would be useful to know what the sensors-detect script actually reports.
Okay. How fan control works on Linux: First, navigate to /sys/class/hwmon
Each of these folders, i.e. hwmon0, stands for a sensors monitor / fan controller on your mainboard that may control one or several fans. Inside hwmonN, there should be a subfolder called device, which contains several interfaces if your BIOS allows software-side fan control. You can read them with cat and write to them with echo.
    Examples:
pwm1_enable shows if OS-level fan control is enabled (1) or disabled and in BIOS control (0). Changing fan speed won't work if this is disabled. (i.e. cat /sys/class/hwmon0/device/pwm1_enable reports 0 -> disabled; you could enable it with echo 1 > /sys/class/hwmon0/device/pwm1_enable).
pwm1 allows to change fan speed. The values range from 0 (fan off) to 255 (full speed, 12V).
fan1_input shows the current RPM if a fan is connected. You can only read from this interface. Its useful to check all of these in the each of the hwmon folders to find out if there is actually a fan connected to the fan controller (they often have more ports than mainboard manufacturers use).
There might be a fan1_div, this is somehow related to how the kernel reads the RPM, I don't know how it works.
temp1_input interfaces can appeare too, if some of the chips have temperature sensors located somewhere. I *think* lm_sensors places the core temperatures it reads from CPU (the coretemp-isa-000X thingies) in one of the hwmon-folders too.
There might be interfaces for different fans in the same hwmon folder, i.e. pwm2_enable, pwm2, fan2_input, etc., all interfaces with the same index belong to the same physical fan connector, and all in the same hwmonN are managed by the same IC on your mainboard.
Warning: These interfaces, if they work, control the fans directly without any kind of security measure. If you shut some essential fan down, it will stay off until you reboot your CPU shuts down.
(If you see something likein0_alarm, in0_input, in0_max, etc. it's a voltage monitoring chip.)
If one of those interfaces can do something, OS-level fan control does work, if none of those folders contain a working pwm interface, fan control seems to be unavailable.
Sometimes there is an option in the BIOS to enable it, and for some BIOSs software-side fan control only works if dynamic fan control is disabled in the BIOS and fan speed is set to a static value - or vice versa.
I don't know what you are using to control fan speed, there are many applications that use these interfaces, i.e. GNOME or KDE power managers, so I'm not sure what is happening:
    IF: Windows 7 enables OS-level fan control and sets it the RPM to those you observed and you have nothing that provides fan control in Arch and so fan control stays at BIOS-level, which might also read out a different sensor / the same sensor differently or it might be more conservative in setting fan speeds altogether;
OR: You have something that provides fan control installed in Arch and it reads out a the wrong value supplied by lm_sensors and thus sets a higher fan speed.
Anyway, possible solutions I can think of:
Find out if you have some kind of fan control software and what it does. For example, I use the fancontrol daemon, I can't help you if you use something else.
The wiki mentions how to assign a fan speed to a certain temperature sensors. You might assign it to a different one. For example, there are no sensor chips on the mainboard of my EEE (no temp1 etc.) so I assigned the fan speed to the temperature reported by the BIOS via ACPI (those are in /sys/class/thermal, also no "device" subfolder on EEEs):
    FCTEMPS=/sys/class/hwmon/hwmon0/pwm1=/sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp
You could also change the MINTEMP/MAXTEMP values to one higher than those you actually want to compensate for the effect of lm_sensors reporting temperatures that are too high.
It is currently not possible for a mortal user to change the coretemps lm_sensors reads, see this post, last paragraph.
There is a configuration file, /etc/sensors3.conf, you can change sensor names and adjust offsets here, but only for the monitoring chips and their sensors that are on the mainboard.

  • Xorg 1.6, nivida drivers, and fan speed

I know the older nvidia drivers are not compatible with the new xorg, nor the nvidia-utils as I tried and found out!
I have 2 issues with this pc: I have a 6800gt nvidia card and the fan is constantly near 100% or close enough! I tried to install and run nvclock but it wont change the fan speed for this 6800 model. My xorg is below but I am not sure the drivers are working too good as the glxgears are only 140fps! I have a an older laptop with a smaller graphics card getting over 1000 fps!
NOW, before anyone gets excited I know glxgears is not the "best" benchmark, but its a decent one and accurate enough that I wont go from 140fps using it to 1000 fps using a similar bench.
I also tried to update the driver to the nouveau-drm driver but not sure if its installed or how to get it loaded in xorg. Any suggestions on these 2 issues?

  • MSI Afterburner Fan speed?

i have a MSI Radeon HD 5970 g.c. and i recently adjusted fan speed to cool off to about 35 degrees C when pc starts.
to do this i raised fan speed to about 60%.
normally, the fan comes on and while progressively cooling my g.c. it cycles down to a lower fan speed.
just recently though, the fan has stopped cycling down after startup or during gameplay that causes lots of heat, cycling up to account for the heat.
i have MSI afterburner v2.0.0 with latest graphics drivers and what not(im pretty sure, as of feb. 4,2011)
is this a common problem or is there something simple i can do to fix?

Try downloading Afterburner 2.1.0 Beta 7 here and see if that changes anything.
The one you have is older and known to have issues.
    Edit:
Here's a quote with from the changes they made:
    Quote
Fan control settings are now being forcibly reapplied after changing the clocks via unofficial overclocking path to bypass bug in AMD driver causin the fan control settings to be reset to defaults after programming PowerPlay table
So that might be the problem you have.
    Good luck

  • Defult fan speed increase

    Hi,
I've had my macbook about 9 months now and this last week the fans on it have been spinning at 1792 rpm all the time. Before they used to spin at about 1040 and the increase is annoying because the fans are now clearly audible.
I'm just wondering whether chances are that dust has built up inside the macbook/ I've read elsewhere on the net about resetting the PRAM which is a hardware controller for the fans.
    Does anyone have any advice?
    Thanks
    Andy

Since you haven't included your specific MacBook model in your profile or posts, it is hard to say exactly what is normal for it, but as a reference my less than one month old white MacBook 2.4 GHz (still the newest version for now, I think) typically idles at about 43° to 45° C CPU temperature & 1800 rpm fan speed. This is in rooms from about 18° C to 24° C, with the MacBook on a hard surface & nothing obstructing the vents or keyboard. Above 24° or so, the operating temperature & fan speed begin to creep up, but so far anyway the fan never runs slower than ~1800 rpm.
At 1800 rpm, the fan is "whisper quiet" -- not until the CPU load hits a sustained 30% or so do I really notice it.
If yours used to run quietly but doesn't now, & the cause is not a heavy CPU load, you still must consider the effects of changing ambient air temperature before deciding there is something wrong with it. For example, the weather in your part of the U.K. may now be warmer than it has been in the previous 9 months of ownership & you may not be using it in a climate-controlled space. Since you say nothing about that, we have no way of knowing if that is a factor or not.
Also, remember that this is an exhaust fan that cools everything in the case, not just the CPU. You may want to check with a utility like iStat Pro to get a more complete picture of component temperatures. If you notice some other component is running hotter than the CPU, it may be a clue that points to the cause.
As for your supposition that dust buildup is the cause, it is possible but probably unlikely unless you have been running the Mac in an extremely dusty environment. One thing to keep in mind in this regard is that some cooling air normally enters the case through the gaps between the keys, so vacuuming the keyboard may help.

  • IMac 27, i5/i7 - Fan speed / temperatures during gaming?

    Hi all!
This is my first post in this forum. I have searched a lot in the internet, but I have not found any reliable information on this topic.
I currently have a MBP (see signature) and I am really happy with it. However, each time I am playing a game (just casually), the fans accelerate to 6200 rpm within a few minutes which is really annoying (= very loud, high frequency noise). Typical games are Sims3 as well as the Steam games TF2, Portal, and Torchlight. Furthermore, I am playing games like Black&White2, Bioshock or Chess using Parallels 5/Win XP.
I am now looking for an additional desktop computer - and I am loving the idea of buying an iMac i5. However, I would really hate to hear this loud fan noise again... (the alternative would be a Dell XPS 7100, but I really love OS X after 20+ years using Windows).
Thus, I am looking for reliable data (fans rpm, cpu/gpu temperature) during gaming (under steam os x, parallels, and boot camp). Also any experience on long-term reliability of iMacs used for gaming is appreciated.
Thank you very much in advance!
P.S.: Hope my english is not too bad, since I am not a native speaker...

It's a simple match - the more power your computer uses, the hotter it gets, and the faster and louder the fans. The graphics card and CPU are the most power-hungry parts, and are used at a high percentage during gaming.
That said, my current iMac is the i5 (27", 4850) and it doesn't spin up the fans at all playing Torchlight at full native resolution. It does start whirring a little playing Bioshock/Portal/HL2, but not so loudly - the fan speeds go from 1100 (normal, nearly silent) to 1450 or so.
Temperatures I've not followed - but they don't actually matter, just the noise that is made to keep them under control.
In Boot Camp, much the same - although I don't have a fan-speed monitor for Windows, again HL2 would just slightly speed up the fans.
But! I would suggest waiting a short while, it's 10 months since the iMac range was last refreshed so it could be just about time for them to be updated.
ps Your english is perfect, I would never have guessed you were not a native speaker.

  • Change fan speeds on Lenovo G560?

Hey there, I'm wondering, is it possible to manually change the fan speeds on this laptop? When I'm rendering a video in Sony Vegas it heats up my laptop and I'm just wondering is there a solution other than laptop cooling pads?

as i know, controlling the fan is not possible for this serie of lenovo.

  • Unlock Fan Speed

I have an HP ENVY 14 1111nr pc. It has an i5, 6Gb or RAM, and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics card. I just want to know how you unlock the fan speed on this laptop. I know there is a way because I have friends at school that tell me its possible, but I just dont know how. Lately my pc has been running warm, and I want to be able to control the fan speed.

Quote from: poxxxy on 13-September-12, 18:15:28
Thanks, already know my way around Afterburner though . Its limited to 80% max fan speed... thats the issue! I want to unlock the 100% fan speed.
I downloaded the newest GTX 580 BIOS from the MSI website, and modified it with NiBiTor. There are numerous articles on how to do, and flash the BIOS properly, with a google search.

  • Resetting fan speed

I had a buggy 10.6.4 system, so I went back to 10.6.2, and everything seems to work now.
In 10.6.4 i had SMCfanControl running fans at 2500-3000rpm. After doing a clean 10.6 install followed by the 10.6.2 combo update, and installing SCMFanControl again I cant get the fan speeds down to where I want them. It's as if they are locked to the speed from before the clean 10.6 install.
How can I get them down ?
If have tried to uninstall SMC and then installing Istat instead, but I can't get them to do the job either.
    What to do?
    Thanks
    -Oex

I'd try uninstalling scmFan first followed by an SMC Reset: shutdown, disconnect the power plug, hold the power button in for 5 seconds, reconnect power, power up. Check the fan speeds at this point to be sure they have returned to the defaults. Then, if you like, reinstall smcFan.
To uninstall smcFan: drag the app to the trash and trash these files: */Users/your user name/Library/Preferences/com.eidac.smcFanControl2.plist*
    */Users/your user name/Library/Application Support/CrashReporter/smcFanControl_long string of numbers.plist*

  • N670 PE fan speed

Hi, I would like to slow down fan speed on this card after startup (and after restart also). Is it possible ?
I know about Dust removal technology, but I believe with my Fractal Define R4 computer case I can live without this feature.
Probably the best solution will be modify my current vbios but I don't know how. Can you help me ?
    Here is my vbios: http://leteckaposta.cz/245094170
    S/N: 602 - V284 - 030B1302115960

    no, didnt help
I think it has nothing to do with Afternurner at all...
Don't know whether I can post link to another forum but this guy explains it perfectly
couple of posts later he solved this issue with modified Galaxy and MSI PE vbios
I already know that MSI has something like bug in vbios and didn't help if original vbios is modified with 100% power as 200W (175W is default).. GPU will be still throttling however not at ~100% power but at ~90%,
so increasing power limit doesn't help at all, no matter if it has modified power limits or not
on the other hand this Galaxy&Msi vbios works perfectly without throttling, which I have confirmed... so its not hardware issue

  • Is this normal fans speeds for MacBook Pros? See videos of my MBP in action

I can't figure out the fans on my MacBook Pro. The lowest normal speed for the fans in 2,000 rpm. They will spin up at times for no apparent reason to 5,0000 or 6,200 with nothing taxing the CPU while it's also pretty cool, usually around the high 30's or low 40's celsius.
The other night I was converting a movie with Visual Hub, with the process taking 80% of the CPU and the temp reaching 75 c with the fans staying at 2,000 RPM until about half way through the eight minute conversion. This is a time I would have expected the fans to kick in much earlier than they did.
I have reset the SMC previously with no effect. Coming from a Polycarbonate MacBook this machine is much nosier, but also much cooler running.
Check out the videos I made showing iStat and Activity Monitor during these episodes. Thanks for any feedback. I'm coming to the end of my 14-day return period and wanted to verify if my MBP is operating like others.
    VIDEOS HERE.
    Thanks for any feedback.

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggests.
S.U. -- I ran the Apple Hardware Test when I received the computer and it found no problems.
Travis -- Thanks for the insight to what normal range is for the MBP.
I opened a case with Apple to get the ball rolling and get assigned a case number. The tech on the phone could not look at the videos but didn't think there was a problem from my descriptions. He did suggest I take it in for a look.
Online I made a reservation for the Genius at the Apple Store that night. While I was waiting I was curious how other MBP's handled some serious thrashing. Since it was late and nobody was in the store, I loaded iStat Pro on three of the MBP's and opened Terminal. In two windows I ran yes > /dev/null and let them run.
On all three machines the fan speeds never got higher than the lower 4K rpm range. They all settled in around 90C and stayed there. One MBP ran these processes for about 40 minutes and the highest fan speed I remember seeing was 35XX RPM, and again around 90C, but it would fluctuate up or down a few degrees.
When my appointment came up I showed Rex, my Genius rep (Cleveland, Legacy Village store), what I had done on their machines just to get some perspective on how other MBP's handled both cores running more than 90%.
My MacBook had been asleep for a few hours. When he woke it up the fans went immediately to 4200 rpm and stayed there. He hooked up a super-duper, special, double-secret HD via firewire and booted off that. The problem persisted.
He took it in back to crack it open. He was looking for any loose connections but found none. He could not find any errors but agreed that something was amiss with my MBP.
He was not sure if my computer, being a refurb, was different when it came to returns. We called Apple on my cell, got a rep, and he arranged for them to take back my Mac since I'm within my 14 days.
So props to Rex for his great customer service and a happy ending.
