Processor speed "v" Memory?
Looking at the Options list in the Apple Store.
When dealing with images in Adobe Lightroom, or similar, which is the better option of thees two when spec’ing an Air:
1) faster processor (1.7 Core i7over a 1.4 Core i5) or
2) 8GB of Memory over 4GB?
Yes, it’d be great to have both, but which one is the better option in a shoot-out?
Thanks

Can my old iMac be upgraded for more memory and higher processor speed?
I admit it - I'm not a computer geek. I don't know much about how they work but am proficient in using them. I have an older model iMac. The specs are:
Hardware Overview:
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac6,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: IM61.0093.B07
SMC Version (system): 1.10f2
System Version: Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)
I get the SBBOD all of the time no matter what. I've tried all of the suggestions to resolve that issue but they don't work. Even when only one program is open at a time it does it. The speed of getting anything accomplished has been dramatically reduced over time. All of my software is up to date. All I need to know is, if I take my iMac to an Apple store, can they upgrade the RAM or whatever is needed to make the SBBOD go away and make things work faster? Sorry for sounding like a dummy here but I'm really not interested in how it works, just that it does work.
Thanks for any help you can give!I did the etrecheck as suggested and here is what it came up with. Does anything look suspect?

I have an iMac OS X ver 10.7.5. Processor speed is 3.06 GHz intel core i3, and the memory is 4 GB 1333 MHz RAM. My online banking app is being updated and requires OS ver 10.8 or newer. When I ask for available updates, the system says there are none available. How can I update my system to ver 10.8 or newer to accommodate the new banking app?
You can update directly to Yosemite (for free) through the App Store (this is 10.10). Make sure your existing applications will run on this OS.
If you wish to stay at 10.8, you can order this through the online Apple Store (it's $20), and they will email you a redemption code to be used on the App Store.

Which influence Java performance most -- processor speed, memory or cache
Which influence Java performance under Windows most -- processor speed, memory or cache?
I realize all three are importance. Adding memory is usually simple. But would you choose a slower P4 w/cache or a faster Celeron w/o cache. How much does 8KB of cache vs 32KB of cache effect Java.
Thanks all! This is not strictly a Java issue - you are asking about the the realtive benefits to CPU bound programs of various CPU tradeoffs. There is no one right answer.
More cache (level one and level two) is great, but the 'right' amount depends on the difference in memory access and bandwidth versus the ability of the CPU to digest data and code. If all things are equal (CPU speed, memory bandwidth, processor architecture), then more level one and level two cache is better. But I think there is not a great chance that more cache would make up for significant (>20%) difference in CPU clock rate (again with processor architecture and memory bandwidth held constant).
Clock rates should not be used to compare processors of different designs. A 900MHz PA87xx is a lot faster (at some things) than a 1.6GHz P4. An AMD Athlon running at 1.5GHz gives a 2.0GHz P4 a good run for its money.
The best bet would be to look for comparisions made against CPU bound benchmarks. www.spec.org's specJVM98 and specJBB2000 would be a great tool, but there isn't much existing data to compare. You could of course license and run the benchmarks yourself. You can also look to other benchmarks (look at the comparisons at www.tomshardware.com, etc.) to compare, there are plenty to choose from. -

I tested them side-by-side in Apple Store today and after the same 10 apps loaded, I didn't feel significant speed gain from iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retina Display from my New iPad.
I wonder what Processing Speed and Built-in Memory do the iPad Air and the iPad Mini with Retina Display have.
Can someone who has upgraded give any feedback? Thanks Diavonex.

32gig Memory on Macpro 8 Core - How to use it all the memory and processor speed
Hello Everyone,
I was wondering if any of you out there know a way to have my Mac Pro use more of the memory it has. I have 32gig of memory and I would like to have it use more processor power and memory if possible. I am aware you can use the "renice -10 -p PIDNUMBER"
How can I make it use more of the processors and memory my machine has. Ex. Running Photoshop or Final Cut, Imovie etc.Using the Unix nice command raises the priority of a process, but software will use the amount of memory it needs. You cannot make a program use memory it does not need. Same with processor cores, if software is written to use only one processor or core you cannot make it use more, the software has to be designed for multi-threading to do that.

Amount of RAM useful limited to processor speed?
I have heard that at a certain point the amount of RAM you throw in your computer won't help past a certain processor speed. If this is true, is there a chart out there that will show these limits?
Or if anyone has any opinions as far as a:
Dual 2.7Ghz (G5)
Dual 1.8Ghz (G5)
Dual 800Mhz (G4)
all PowerPC
thanks,
TWithout a list of applications, you could be starving your apps, especially if they need to be open and active. If you work on large photoshop files and not smallish, it is impossible almost to have too much (and you would need a PCIe G5 to get 10-12GB RAM).
Check page-out; number of swap files; whether you are generating swap files.
just scanning and retouching can eat up 2GB RAM.
OS X uses free memory to cache windows, disk I/O, and those won't show up looking at Activity Monitor.
Virtual memory can be 'requested' or 'allocated' but not used, too.
I saw people with 512-768MB be shocked at what a difference even light use (email, web, writing, etc) it was to upgrade their G5 to 1.5GB RAM. There are also programming changes that go into a G5 that are totally different from G4s.
But it has nothing to do with cpu, front side bus.
And no matter what, a nice fast 10K Raptor boot drive always helps -
All
Was wondering if there is a way to change the processor speed or if it has something to do with how you change the batter settings. Ie performance vs battery life. Im running duo core temp and it shows that im running at 1.5GHz and not 2.0. I have a MB Black 2.0 512MB Ram (2GB in the mail)
ThanksThere have been a lot of discussions about memory allocation in the past, but briefly I touch on a few points. When an array is preallocated (initialized) to be a certain size LabVIEW is then able at compile time to set aside a certain amount of memory for that array. Then, if you are using the "replace array element" function within your loop the array isn't growing, just the values are being changed. If you are building the array in the loop, by appending to the existing array for instance, LabVIEW will continuously have to try and allocate memory space to the increasingly bigger array, sometimes having to move it to a whole new memory area. Additionally, and there are discussions of this in the other threads, if you branch the wires to different functions in the loop, LabVIEW will create copies of the initial array, compounding the whole problem, greatly effecting the execution speed, etc. There have been a lot of discussions about the effects of using the various types of variables (e.g. locals and globals) and other efficiency impacts, for instance having an array of double connected to an indicator of single (or any other type mismatch) which is another thing that creates a copy of the data in memory. You can see that it wouldn't take too many of these to start having an impact on your programs speed. Do a search on this forum for memory usage, memory allocation, efficiency, etc. and you will see some of these discussions. One of the "nuggets" which initially deals with "Action Engines" discusses some of the causes and effects. When you do search, check the date stamps, some of these might be a little old.

Model Identifier: MacBook5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
I have an i phone 5 s and i am trying to sinc using this computer mac pro and it doesn't sync trying to see if anyone can give me a solution to this..You need minimally Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
Snow Leopard General Requirements
1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
2. 1GB of memory
3. 5GB of available disk space
4. DVD drive for installation
5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
fees may apply.
6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
terms apply.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
Model Identifier 5,1 or later
3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
Lion System Requirements
1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
or Xeon processor
2. 2GB of memory
3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
4. 7GB of available space
5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply. -

Apple states that (of the MBP lines) it has to be from Mid/Late 2007 or later. yours seems to be right on the line.
Apple says
If you are running Lion, you can find out if your current Mac qualifies by clicking the Apple icon at the top left of your screen, choosing About This Mac, then clicking More Info.
you must also have the latest version of Snow Leapord or Lion -

hi looking at the 12c grid installation doc it mentions that 2 cores are needed for small deployment, and 2cores for dbms repository, it doesnt clearify processor speed for those cores.
any ideas?
I am thinking of installing both OMS and dbms repository on the same box, do i need 4 cores in total to start with ?
thank youThanks Diavonex.

Your Mac meets the requirements but make sure there's enough free disk space.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
