Processor Whine on the Newest MBPs (hate to beat a dead horse, but...)

I was curious as to whether the infamous CPU whine (which I experience extensively on my Blackbook) still exists on the newest MBPs (i.e., Santa Rosa). My Blackbook has featured no less than three of the major known (or "unknown" if you are Apple) issues--the whine, the screwed-up trackpad, and persistent difficulties awaking from sleep--and I need to find another option. I suspect that the whine is still there on Santa Rosa MBPs, but I figure that it may be drastically reduced. I also hear that the trackpad is much better on MBPs than on Macbooks. Thanks.

It is definitely the processor. I have had the exact same problem (as stated above) and I am sure that it is the processor (I know because I used a program to modulate the processor load with a slider and you could hear the noise change pitch until--finally--it went away). My hypothesis is that when the MagSafe adapter is plugged in, the computer switches over to a more high performance mode in which the computer uses more of the available resources, meaning that the processor has to do less work, and thus goes into an idle state more often. And yes, I think that frequency=intensity here. Another hypothesis might be that the adapter somehow amplifies the noise electromagnetically (this might make sense since the MagSafe both--obviously--conducts electricity and is secured by a magnet). At any rate, I didn't think that the noise was the processor at first, either, but as it turns out it is. And despite what others say, I think it's an Intel screw-up and not Apple, although Apple should take responsibility (more responsibility, that is). Indeed, I have had all sorts of problems with my Intel Macs, whereas I never, not once, had a problem my PPC Macs.

  • NEW MBP: any overheating issues with the newest MBP?

I'd like to know if anyone experienced any overheating problems with the newest models? Plus, are they really all warped?? I wanna go for the 15-inch one...

My MBP, received a week ago, got loco on me once and really started heating up with the fans going full-blast, but it turned out to be Spotlight happily trying to index a very large external firewire drive with an extensive photo collection. Once I disabled indexing on that volume, things returned to and have remained normal ever since. For ventilation purposes, you need to leave the area around the keyboard and around the display hinge free, since that is where the fans push the air in and out thru the machine.
That's also why the jury is still out, regarding using a MBP for intensive applications in a closed-lid, external KVM configuration.

  • For all users of the newest MBPs - freezing problem

I spent the whole last week trying to detect the problem of the freezing OS (every N minutes, a freeze for 20-30 sec).
If you're experiencing the same issue, don't waste your time uninstalling 'suspicious' software like I did… this helps. Really:

Downgrading the EFI 1.7 (preinstalled or installed with Software Update) to EFI 1.6 solves the problem. No more freezing. The update procedure seemed a bit risky to me but well, it worked (you can use an USB stick, I used my external USB hard drive)
    My tech specs: MacBookPro5,4, 2,53 GHz, 4GB RAM, HDD - Hitachi HTS545025B9SA02, OS 10.6.1
One more thing: in case of other strange problems, try uninstalling Logitech mouse drivers if you've got those. That one solved my coreservicesd crashing problems. I'm waiting for the incoming update of Logitech.

yes, I did. I spent at least 8 hours searching for a solution here, in the forums and tried everything making sense... The EFI downgrade was the only thing that helped.
My personal opinion is: Apple should offer the EFI downgrade option to all users in an official way. It looks like my favorite vendor does not want to admit they made a hardware+software mistake (the EFI 1.7 update solves some HDD issues on some new MBPs but causes other problems on other MBPs).

  • I have synced my Iphone 3GS to the newest itunes version to get IMessage, it worked but now it doesn't and i have tried resyncing my phone but it still doesn't work. what should i do?

I have synced my IPhone 3GS to the newest iTunes version to get IMessage, it worked for a while but now it doesn't work and I have tried resyncing my phone but it still doesn't work. what should I do?

Basic troubleshooting steps clearly outlined in the User Guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new device.
If you have been through ALL of the troubleshooting steps and you're still having problems, then you'll need to bring your phone to Apple for investigation.

  • I'm trying to download the newest version of CC programs on my computer but somehow get older versions

I'm trying to download the newest version of for instance Illustrator (october 2014, including Creative Cloud Libraries, Lady with Sunglasses version) on my computer, but somehow I still get the older version (no libraries, Lion version). What do I do wrong? I tried a new download of Creative Cloud, removed all the Apps and tried a new Illustrator... still the 'old' version.

I'm using an iMac with the newest OS X Yosemite. I tried to reinstall Creative Cloud, removed all the programs. But I still get the 'old' 2014 version with the Lionhead, not the Sunglasses (october 2014) with interactive libraries. I use Adobe iPad apps, for instance Adobe Brush, Adobe Shape and Adobe Color and it's so great to have all the things you make with these apps in your Illustrator & Photoshop libraries. Somehow it worked om my laptop, but not om my home computer.

I cannot connect to my new google+ account using Firefox 6. When I try to access google+ I get a message that I need to update Firefox, which I have done twice. I can access gmail and everything else that google has to offer - I think. Please help.

Open System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Proxies
Deselect any checked boxes on the left then click OK.
If none of those boxes were selected, it might be a Safari extension causing the proxy dialog.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

  • I downloaded the newest flash player 10..... but it wont work? why?

when i go to a site that needs this newer flash player it says that i need to download the most recent.  but i already did? i have ie windows 7.  anybody having the same problem?  this problem just occured about 2 days ago.

Sorry, but we had a power failure yesterday and power was not turned back on until middle of night. I had given up by then and gone to bed.
I am getting very confused with emails from your forum. I started receiving 60-70 emails from forum support each day and from all different subject lines than my original question. The above was not my original question either. Most refer to different issues and different operation systems than mine. My original question was "Is updated Adobe 10.2.159.1 and FF4 compatible?"
Is Pat handling my problem now? Why am I receiving all of these emails from him with different subject lines?
The last few request I received from you were to go to Tools,Help, get version #. I replied there was no help button in tools menu. I looked everywhere I could think, sent you what I could find, but, now I don't think my reply was correct. While scanning one of the emails I rec'd today from Pat, I went to start, right click computer and here is what I found:
    Window-Microsoft Windows XP
    home-version2002-service pack3
    Intel R
    Pentium(R) 4CPU 2.80ghz
    2.79 GHz, 504 MB ram
    Physical address extension
Nothing listed about 32 or 64 bits.
At bottom of page under System:
    Microsoft Windows xp
home edition-version 2002-service pack 2 - Still nothing listed about bits.
I did not look for the Kill-bit Key email from Pat because he was replying to someone else and copying me. I am sorry, but, I think I may have deleted his instructions on how to do it, because I did not realize he was asking me also. Again, the subject was different than my question.
I am so sorry for being so stupid about computers, but, all I ever had to use them for was work and personal. Internet browsing was mainly used to play Pogo and Facebook and occasionally check out a web-site.
I have not been able to go into the registry and find a log from Malware System. I see Malware progam listed, went into each file, the only thing I can find is licensing files and such. I cannot find a log of my scan.
I didn't follow your request to go to web address, install Malware & update yet until I hear back. I told you sometime last week that I had installed Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, per an email from your Forum support. I ran a full scan and found email worm and followed their instructions to quarantine. Should it be deleted instead? If so, sorry again, but, you will have to tell me how. I had always quarantined per my programs instruction. Found the following about email worm:
Adware. My Web 5\5\11\file\c:RECYCLER\S-5-21-1060284298-12292727272821-682003. Hope this is what you need.
My version of Malwarebytes is version1.50.1.1100. Is this old? Should I go to web site and download again?
Sorry for such long replies and unending questions. But I would like to know for sure, who is handling my original question now? With 60-70 emails each day, it is hard to keep up with each request and I am afraid since subject line is mostly Updated Flashplayer won't download.
Sorry to be so much trouble, but just let me know whose emails I should follow now, and I will try and get all requests taken care of as soon as I can.
    Thank you for your help.

  • I have lost iPhoto , was advised if I updated to the newest operating system Maverick that iPhoto would reload but it hasn't worked, any ideas how I can retrieve it without laying?

    any idea iron suggestions please?

This screenshot shows which previous versions of iPhoto are compatible with Mavericks.  It also indicates which versions qualify for a free upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 and which require a purchase:
Note 1:  every day more users are reporting problems with iPhoto 8.1.2 so I've included it in the non compatible category.
Note 2:  If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 application on the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.5.1.
If you don't have a backup of your hard drive from before you upgraded to Mavericks where you can restore the previous version of iPhoto (if it's compatible with Mavericks) you'll need to either use the disks that came with the Mac (if there were any) or an iLife 11 disk or purchse from the App Store.

  • Having just upgraded to the newest version, I chose to disable infoaxe (Flip), but it didn't happen! HELP!

I was tricked into signing up for flip by getting a message from a good friend whom I had not heard from in a long time. I e-mailed her to ask about it and didn't get a response. Foolishly, I then signed up and am very grumpy because some of my friends then got the same message from me. It's a valid site, but I refuse to be part of a scam like this. Then when I updated to Firefox 8.0.2, I was asked to choose which add-ons to keep or get rid of. I got rid of 3, only this one was recognizable to me. But when I opened Firefox, it was still there.

It is working now. I no longer get the message about the item not being available in the US and I can access the store.

  • A few questions and comments about the 2010 MBP i7

Hi! I'm pretty new to owning a Mac computer and I actually always wanted one. I bought the top of the line Macbook Pro 15" i7 8GB, 500GB SSD notebook. I have a couple of questions on its usage.
    1) Overheating is a big issue. Many people noticed overheating with the i7 MBP. Temperatures range from 38C to 60C when using iTunes/Safari/Word. Temperatures shoot to the 70C-85C when playing games. Once you hit the 70C mark, the notebook part above the keyboard is pretty hot. However, I wouldn't care if it doesn't damage my computer so my question is, will 85C temperatures damage a Macbook Pro?
    2) Screen Scratching: Do MBP screens scratch easily? I have quite a few fingerprints a day on the screen but is it like the iPod Touch anti-scratch screen?
    3) Freezing: I've been having the MBP for 2 weeks now and my MBP has frozen twice. It wasn't because of the heat but Finder wasn't responding and I could not force quit. However, it worked after 30 seconds. Does this happen often and will it be a long-term issue?
Even after the overheating issue, Macs are still better than PCs. It's so much easier and neat than a PC.
    5) Do you guys have any tips to using a Mac? Any accessories?
    6) I installed SMC Fan Control. If I set it to 6000 rpm, will there be any significant damage to the fans? Are the fans durable?
Thank you all for the help!

Just came across this thread while looking for info on the newest MBPs, and their (lack of) ability to cool themselves. Wanted to throw my 2c in.
I have to strongly disagree with the recommendation to not install fan control software. I have an early 2008 MBP, and I frequently play video games and encode video. When left to defend itself, I have witnessed the CPU temp reach 202 F. Sorry, but that's totally unacceptable, and I manually adjust the fans to mitigate the heat.
After 2 years of this, I am convinced the excess heat has harmed my system. It's very disappointing to hear that the new models still have problems with heat.

  • How loud is the whine on the new 2Ghz MacBook?

I have been seeing alot of posts about people complaing about the whining thier MacBook is making. I was wondering how loud it is, and if its really anything to be concerned about. My old iBook makes some noise, but its not anything that annoys me, and you can't even hear it if there is some other noise in the room (i.e. TV, music, etc.).
Also, people have been talking about mooing, what the heck is that?
    Thanks!

Mine doesn't. When plugged in I get a very very faint buzz from the charging but it's not the CPU whine like the 15" MBPs have and it's about 10x fainter in volume at least. I've gotten very good at hearing the CPU whine and this isn't it (at least on mine).
My black macbook whines too when the AC adapter is
    plugged in

  • Newest MBPs and their serial numbers

    Hello,
I was wondering what the serial numbers for the newest MBP are right now. I just got a MBP, and before I open the box, I'd like to know if it is one of the newer units.
    thanks much

The serial number is printed on the outside of the Apple packaging. I recieved a W8617 (week 17) at the end of April.

  • Papers2 and the newest version of Pages (5.0.1)

I have a problem: I'm working with Papers2 (software from mekentosj), and the newest version of pages (5.0.1). But after updating the newest pages version, it doesn't allow me anymore to cite any papers.. It says: this version of pages is not supported.. Anyone has the same problem and knows how to resolve it?!
    Cheers,
    Leonie

Apple has removed over 90 features from Pages 5.

Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.
Archive/trash Pages 5 and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

  • I want to update my computer to the newest software version

I want to update my computer to the newest software version I have 10.6.8 but I am not sure if all of my files will delete. What will happen if I update?

With any update/upgrade you should always do a back up first.
If you have files that have been done on a Clssic Mac platform, they need Rosetta to run, this only runs on SL.
So consider that, also some older versions of iWork...have some issues as well.
But your machine should be able to run Mavs.
