Processors in Solaris

Is there a way in Solaris, where I can allocate one of the processors to a Process (say Oracle server).
Thanks,
Ashok Raja.

  • Installation of solaris 10 on x86 intel dual core or core 2 duo

    hi all,
    while i am installing solaris 10 on x86 machine which has 250 GB hard disk and 4 GB RAM with intel dual core processor
    the first steps are going cool i.e. in the first cd it asks about partitions and it is accepting the partitions and also the partitions sizes what i am giving are:
    / -- 30 GB, /etc -- 6GB, /home -- 6GB, /usr -- 6GB, /export/home -- 100GB, /var -- 9GB, swap-- 10GB
    and after the first CD got installed it asks for restart the system and when it
    boots then i am getting the booting option and i selected it as solaris and one more thing to tell is it has already Windows XP pro+sp2
    after selecting it boots with solaris and
    after few seconds it restarts
    please tell me if any body knows that is there any compatability issue with the processor that solaris is not going to support for intel core 2 duo or dual core processors
    looking for the good reply

    OK, so what are the options if we run the HCL check and come up with some incompatibilities??
    I have Solaris 11/06 (from DVD media) installed on a brand new Dell Inspiron 530 (dual boot with XP). After the grub menu appears, and selecting 'Solaris', it takes about 3 minutes to get to a command line. I get a few errors at that time, such as:
    file in / differ from the boot archive: /etc/path_to_inst
    cannot find /etc/devices/mdi_ib_cache: no such file
    I tried running 'svcadm clear system/boot-archive' and it seems to attempt to boot into a graphical CDE, but I just end up with an unintelligible multi-colored display, and need to power off.
    I've checked the HCL and found some incompatibilities, but I don't know how to work-around these?
    Running the Hardware compatibility test came up with the following:
    No Solaris Driver
    No Solaris Driver
    Communication
    Conexant
    HSF 56k Data/Fax Modem
    No Solaris Driver
    No Solaris Driver
    Network
    Intel Corporation
    *82562V-2 10/100 Network Connection*
    No Solaris Driver
    No Solaris Driver
    Multimedia
    Intel Corporation
    HD Audio Controller
    Can I simply disable the Modem and the HD audio in windows XP device manager, then reboot to Solaris, to get around these two (I tried this already)??
    For the network card driver incompatibility, there is a Sun doc that says the workaround is to run: update_drv -a -i '"pci8086,1064"' iprb, but when I run this command at the initial Solaris command line, or try to edit any file for that matter, I get the error "read-only file system" Seems I have my hands tied in maintenance mode.
    Thanks.

  • Solaris 10 x86 intallation problems

    I have an athlon based machine which was happily running XP this morning. I had previously divided the disk to use a Linux distribution on one half and XP on the other. I wanst using the Linux bit much due to graphics driver problems so I decided to replace it with a Solaris 10.
    I duly went through the installation and was told that the solaris boot loader was incomaptible with the Linux one, grub I think, so I overwrote it and proceeded with the install. During the disk layout procedure I asked it to preserve my XP partition and use the rest for solaris. I had to shrink the solaris bit beyond teh full size by 100k or so and eventually it was happy, or so I thought.
    Solaris is now duly installed and runs fine. I just need to sort out a network card driver. However my problem is that the sun boot loader sees the old XP partition as an extended dos partition (partition 3) and wont boot from it....
    WHat have I done wrong?
    Please dont tell me my XP partition is lost! Is there some tool I can use to make it bootable again? I have seen the grub bits on the GNU site. Are these any use?
    All Help gratefully recieved.

    FYI: I tried yet another version of solaris as i found out that theres a bug in the 64-bit kernel on update 4 for alot of new processors. Solaris 10 x86 update 7 did the trick! :). Installed right away on a standard 'Solaris 10 (64 bit)' VM. I still find it strange that the most recent version of solaris 10 fails to even start the installation.

  • How to find out if I have Solaris v11.0 or v11.2? Where is 64bit Solaris?

    How can I find out if I have Solaris v11.0 or v11.2 installed?
    Does Solaris "2010.11"  mean  Solaris 11 or Solaris 10?
    Assume I have installed Solaris 10 or Solaris 11.0:
    Can I update Solaris with the integrated Update Manager to Solars 11.2 or do I have to install a new Solaris 11.2?
    Finally when I go to Solaris 11 download web page
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris11/downloads/install-2245079.html
    I miss a x64bit Solaris download link.
    I found only an x86 version (which means 32bit for Intel CPUs)
    Thank you
    Peter

    There are two places to look for versioning information:
    $ uname -v
    That will return 11.0, 11.1, 11.2 etc
    Strictly speaking that is only the kernel version but unless you do "very advanced" things with packaging it is acurrate.
    $ pkg info entire
    That will get you information about which SRU (patch) level you are at.
    As for 64 bit that is the 64 bit version.  For Solaris the term "x86" means Intel/AMD compatible processor.  Solaris 11 only boots on 64 bit SPARC and Intel/AMD processors.
    Since Solaris 7 there has been support for running both 32 bit and 64 bit applications on a 64 bit kernel.  Solaris 11 only delivers a 64 bit kernel for all supported processors.

  • CATIA V5 and Solaris, how to do it???

    Hi people,
    I have a question that I cant seem to find clear and good answer, what system am I suppose to install V5 catia on, where can I download that particular version of solaris, and can that operating system run on the AMD processor or is there any difference between Intel/AMD processors for Solaris.
    Please if anybody has any knowledge on this metter.
    With Best Regards.
    Marko

    Hi Marko,
    This isn't gonna work I'm afraid: Dassault offers two binaries for Catia, Solaris SPARC and x86 Windows... In other words, the x86 version of Catia isn't going to be compatible with Solaris x86 as it's an MS Windows code...
    Now a little note of hope: PTC has released a version of Pro/E for Solaris x86, so if Dassault sees a market for this they will follow... All it takes is a big customer commited to Solaris x86 interested in Catia...

  • Does Solaris 10 support OmniORB v.4.1?

    Hi Guys,
    Just want to confirm if OmniORB v. 4.1 is still compatible in Solaris 10.
    If not any suggestion what can I use to replace OmniORB v.4.1?

    Hello Bruce,
    each new release adds some features and new kernels.
    It's not possible use patches to get these features.
    To support new systems between the release cycle (Solaris 10 3/05 GA, Solaris 10 1/06), there are <b>temporary</b> HW releases (Solaris 10 HW1, HW2).
    Btw. the <b>temporary</b> is a quote from the "Release Notes Supplement for Solaris 10 3/05 HW2".
    In Solaris 8 there have been PSR releases after the last "normal" release Solaris 8 2/02.
    The features from the HW releases are included in the next following release. That means the two HW releases are replaced by the Solaris 10 1/06.
    <table border="0" align="center" width="90%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td class="SmallText"><b>Quote:</b></td></tr><tr><td class="quote">
    The minimum OS version for 1.5 GHz UltraSPARC IV+ processors is Solaris 9 9/05 and Solaris 10 3/05 HW1
    The minimum OS version for 1.35 GHz UltraSPARC IV processors is Solaris 8 2/04, Solaris 9 4/04, and Solaris 10 3/05
    </td></tr></table>
    Unfortunately systems that can be upgraded to UltraSPARC IV+ are beyond the scope of these user-to-user forums.

  • How to access performance counter directly?

    What I am going to do is programming with hardware performace counters of UltraSPARC T2+ processors in Solaris 10. I programmed a loadable syscall to invoke the hv_niagara_getperf or ultra_getpic, trying to get the counters' data. But there just comes a panic, unresponsive without any text notice, and then reset. I don't know what's the real causes because I am not very familiar with SUN servers.
    I did some experiments both in primary domain and logical domain. In primary domain, both hv_niagara_getperf and ultra_getpic lead to panic, and in logical domain, hv_niagara_getperf return the ENOACCESS status and ultra_getpic lead to panic.
    My question are:
    1, If there is some initialization works or privilege settings to do to prevent panic?
    2, If Logical Domain can be set privileges to access hardware performace counters? (I read the Hypervisor api manuals and it says only one domain can access performance counters. But vcpus is divided and allocated to different domains, every vcpu has its performace counters, how can I do to access their own performace counters in different domains?)
    3, I know there are methods such as libcpc, cpc module, and pcbe module for users or develpers to get performace data. What I am working at is to make some threads performance tuning on UltraSPARC T2+, Is the overhead acceptable to use these library or modules supported by the OS architecture.
    Please help me, indicate my fault and give me some advice or instruction. Thank you very much.

  • Loaded Solstice AdminSuite and now pcplusmp error!

    Wow, I've been running my Solaris 8 (fully patched) on a Compaq Proliant twin Xeon system for a couple of months now. I've been working it, tweaking it, getting it ready for prime time to take over as primary web server for a 2000 box. Today I installed Sun Solstice AdminSuite and when I rebooted (it prompted me), it fails at the kernel load. The error message I get just before the panic is:
    warning: pcplusmp: acpi_probe illegal type header in APIC DT
    Looks like a kernel issue but I don't know what. I've searched the web, Sun, everywhere and can't find anything useful on this. Has anyone had this problem with a dual-processor server? Any light you can shed would be appreciated.
    -Steve

    I am seeing the same error on a PRIMERGY BX6320-S2 blade with AMD QUAD Opteron 8350 Processors running Solaris 10 x86 U5. Even after patching with the latest release bringing the kernel to 137112-03.

  • Problems installing Sol 10 x86 on Compaq Harware

    Please Help! I am a newbie to Solaris and I am trying to understand some of these postings in this thread. I am trying to install Sol 10 on a Compaq DL360 with dual proc 1.26 MHZ and 3 GB RAM. It has an imbeded 5i array controller with two 36 GB drives attached set up as RAID 0.
    I have downloaded the Sol 8 UTI disk for the controller and seem to be able to successfully add the driver for installation. Note: I renamed the directory from Sol_28 to Sol_210 as instructed earlier in this thread. I get a warning message after loading the driver that says :
    Solaris could not detect a primary disk.....
    However, the system has detected a disk controller without a driver, and assumes that the following disk maps to the primary disk:
    /pic@0,0/pcie11,4040@1/cmdk@0,0:a
    Choose continue to confirm the Solaris bootpath of the primary disk.
    I press F2 to continue.
    I continue with setup and choose Interactive text console. It boots the kernel then I get some memory resource overlap warnings but setup continues. Then I get two warnings that read...
    Warning: /pci@0,0 /pcie11,4040@1/sd@0,0 (sd1): Request Sense couldn't get sense data
    and
    Warning:/pci@0,0/pcie11,4040@1/sd@0,0 (sd1): Sychronize cache command failed (5)
    Setup continues...
    I choose language as English and get same two warnings again. Setup continues. I enter network config info, and set root password then continue. Then installation starts and I get this error...
    One or more disks are found, but one of the following problems exist:
    Hardware Failure
    Unformatted diskThen I push f2_ok and I get kicked out to shell.
    What am I missing? Did I miss something? I tried this on another machine, a Compaq Proliant 800 with a 4200 controller with same results. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Batch inserts and insertion order

    I'm inserting about 14,000 rows in one transaction, each by calling a stored procedure that has only the insert statement with a sequence.next_val to generate the ID. I don't commit or rollback in the procedure.
    I call the stored procedure using a PreparedStatement and batching the calls. After 14,000 calls to addBatch() I call executeBatch().
    The order in which I call is determined by the application and is critical because we want the ids to match that order.
    I see the order of the rows following the id's values does not match the order expected.
    Luckily I can export the same data that is inserted to a file as a "preview" and after I saw the order problem in the inserted data I exported that preview file and I was puzzled to see the order is fine there. This is the same application and I did not even restart it.
    Moreover, looking at the code, it is impossible to insert the data in the order seen in the table, mainly because the rows that are sent together are appearing interleaved with rows that were sent afterwards. There are no duplicate rows, just out of order.
    My questions are meant to rule out causes:
    1) Is there any chance the Oracle Thin Driver is changing the order of the batched procedure calls?
    2) Is there any chance the Oracle 9.2 is receiving the inserts in order but executing them in parallel so the insertion order (i.e. the order in which they get the sequence's value) is different to the order of the calls?
    3) Is it possible that large batches are executed in parallel by the engine?
    The database has 32 processors (runs solaris) and 48GB of RAM. I'm using JDK 1.4 and Oracle's thin driver for Java 1.4 (ojdbc14.jar).
    Thanks in advance for your help.

    The order in which I call is determined by the
    application and is critical because we want the ids
    to match that order.A table does not have "an order". Unless you specify an ORDER BY clause with your SELECT the order of the returned data is not specified and never guaranteed to remain the same.
    Luckily I can export the same data that is inserted
    to a file as a "preview" and after I saw the order
    problem in the inserted data How die you export (i.e. retrieve) the data?
    Did you supply an ORDER BY?

  • Weird exec failure

    Hello,
    This is not a DTrace question, rather a question about suggestions on how I could find more information (possibly with DTrace's help) related to the problem that I am going to describe:
    One user has a simple Fortran program - one single source file. The user has about 15 copies of the source file, the difference between them being the value of a parameter. After he starts 12 such processes, when he tries to start another one the answer at the shell prompt is simply 'Killed'.
    I assume nothing about what the program tries to do although I can get the source for it. What I tried to find out was why this process was killed.
    The system on which the user tried this has 24 processors and runs Solaris 9.
    First I thought it could be some resource limit, but I tried as root and the same thing happened ('Killed' when running more than 12 processes at the same time).
    The BSM record for a failed exec looks like this:

    The 24 processor system on which I ran this has just been upgraded. Since I already have Sun ONE Studio 9 installed on other systems, I tried compiling and running the program on a 2-processor server, one running Solaris 9 as well. On this one, after running 3 processes concurrently I got the same message.

    # ldd ./rez_1.5

    =============
    On a workstation (1 processor) with Solaris Express b58 I ran the command while doing a
    dtrace -n '::*kill*:{printf ("Entered %s\n", probefunc);}'
    in another shell. Nothing appeared, although ldd reported "execution failed due to signal 9" as well.
    No matter what that program may be trying to do, this all seems weird to me. Am I wrong ?
    Just getting a SIGKILL so abruptly ?
    Any ideas ?
    What other probes could be helpful for seeing signals while they are being sent ?
    Thank you,
    Vlad.

    Once exec(2) has passed the point where the old
    address space has been destroyed, the only way it can
    fail is by killing the process itself. My bet is that
    the program has a rather large BSS segment, and there
    isn't enough swap to reserve the space. (ldd(1) works
    by setting up some environment variables, then running
    the program itself, which is why it would fail)
    To verify this, you can run /usr/ccs/bin/size
    /path/to/program The third field is the BSS
    segment.
    You are right:
    $ size ./rez15
    28468 + 940 + 1200000976 = 1200030384which is roughly 1GB.
    You could also look at the proc:::exec-failure probe,
    which will probably give the same answer BSM does --
    EAGAIN.
    What other probes could be helpful for seeingsignals
    while they are being sent ? You should look at the proc provider -- in particular,
    proc:::signal-send.Thank you very much for the answer.
    I first thought memory could be the limiting resource. I dismissed the idea because vmstat showed a lot of free space. So did '::memstat' in mdb -k - reported 87% free.
    Now that you told me what the problem is I see the only command that shows me I don't have enough memory is swap -s :
    $ swap -s
    total: 129136k bytes allocated + 11656752k reserved = 11785888k used, 3454144k availableWhich shows a lot of memory reserved.
    And running ps -o vsz I can see 1 GB for each process.
    In general I think the performance parameters from the output of commands like vmstat,mpstat,iostat,swap could be documented in more detail.
    At least the basics.
    For instance, could I find documentation on reserved memory ?
    Thanks again for your reply,
    Vlad

  • Dual-CPU motherboard programming

    Hello, I would need to test a program on a dual-cpu (UltraSparc II) computer. Is there a mean to choose one of the CPU to execute my program? In both C and assembly language...
    Thanks by advance.

    Hi,
    Here is a proposed soln.
    It is always an LWP (light weight process) that gets scheduled on a
    processor in Solaris OS. So the soln is run your program on an LWP
    (ie bound thread) and bind the lwp to a processor.
    Here is the pseudo code..
    void * foo();
    main()
    create a bound thread with funcion foo;
    exit this thread (use thr_exit);
    foo()
    bind it to a processor using processor_bind
    system call (man processor_bind);
    execute what ever u want here....
    exit the thread;
    so when ever your program gets executed there is only one thread and
    that thread is executing on only one processor.
    Alternatively use pbind :)
    Hope this helps.

Installed right away on a standard 'Solaris 10 (64 bit)' VM. I still find it strange that the most recent version of solaris 10 fails to even start the installation.
