Producing DVD's from FCP  projects.

The last time I tried authoring my own DVD's was in 2005 on Adobe Premiere and it was a bit of a nightmare. Since then I have been editing on FCP and I am now considering authoring some DVD's from my material. Is it in general terms as complicated as it was in years gone by? I remember DVD duplicators demanding DLT's and all sorts of problems with encoding formats etc. Am I faced with a living nightmare? By the way, the authoring is quite simple, contents, scenes....... and thats about it!

#42 - Quick and dirty way to author a DVD
Shane's Stock Answer #42 - David Roth Weiss' Secret Quick and Dirty Way to Author a DVD:
The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:
1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.
2. Open DVDSP, select the "graphical" tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.
3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.
4. Now, select the green one, right click on it amd select the top option "first play".
5. Now drag your QT from the broswer and drop it on top of the green monitor.
6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the "general tab" in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select "16:9 pan-scan."
7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.
THATS ALL!!!
NOW...if you want a GOOD LOOKING DVD, instead of taking your REF movie into DVD SP, instead take it into Compressor and choose the BEST QUALITY ENCODE (2 pass VBR) that matches your show timing.  Then take THAT result into DVD SP and follow the rest of the steps.  Except you can choose "16:9 LETTERBOX" instead of PAN & SCAN if you want to see the entire image.

Can someone plz help in easy 123.. steps how to make a dvd for my client to view..
    Thnx ever so much

I don't want to sound too harsh, but you really need to read the manual and do the tutorials.
You shoot, capture and edit in FCP. You export that to MPEG2 using compressor and you import the resulting video and audio files into DVDSP. You add a menu and set up buttons to get to the footage, and you set up navigation so that your client can get back to the menu at any time. You build and format that (i.e. burn the disc).
That's the process, but it is very much more detailed than any of us could write here.... it's all in the manual and tutorials

  • Producing NTSC dvd's from PAL projects

    Hi
I'm in Australia (PAL) but would like to produce dvd's that can be viewed in the USA.
If I produce a NTSC version of my PAL filmed project in idvd, will it work in NTSC dvd players in the USA?

when you set iDVD to NTSC/29.97 and import a PAL iMovie, iDVD will convert your material and creates a NTSC videoDVD ...
... my experience, going vice versa, NTSC >>PAL, told me, that the underlying QTengine doesn't show a good result.. so, the long way for a probably better result is:
export your iM as 'QT/Full Quality' ..
download and use for free JES Deinterlacer
open your iMexport, choose 'Project, conversion' and let JESDI do the conversion..
drop THAT new file into a NTSC iDVD project..

  • How to make a DVD 5 from a project?

I have a FCP project just short of 3 hours long and my client has demanded a DVD 5 preview copy with burnt in timecode. Can anyone advise on how I can do this?

You said,"I use a DVD recorder to create BITC copies directly from FCP's Timeline."
I used to make a master on my Sony DVD HD deck and then down convert it onto a DVD recorder, with the time code display on.A bit long winded. I didn't realise you could go from the time line, are you simply playing it back ie pressing the "Space bar"? and if so how do you burn in the time code?
I think I'd rather try and burn a DVD on the computer, I'll give it a go.

  • Creating 16:9 Widescreen DVD's from FCP 5 16:9 project

    Hi would appreciate advice
I'm running Final Cut Studio with iDVD5. I have created a 16:9 project. All the Video / Audio etc settings are set to DV-PAL Anamorphic (16:9) with the Anamorphic check box ticked. Can Apple please tell me (can't find info in FCP or iDVD help) the proper way to Export the finished 16:9 FCP 5.0 Timeline so as to create 16:9 iDVD's. I understood it was suppose to happen automatically but when I Export the Timeline, Quicktime Movie keeps converting to 4:3. I've tried setting it to DVD- PAL 48kHZ Anamorphic but it still seems to revert to 4:3 (and takes 2 hours to create QT movie) What am I doing wrong? Do I need to resize in the Export Settings to say 1080 x 576...Or is using the Anamorphicizer as suggested in iDVD forums the proper way to do it? Why is it so hard I thought it was suppose to be easy....thats why I upgraded to FC Studio and iDVD 5...Please tell me the CORRECT way/settings to produce 16:9 DVD's please?
    thanks
    Waz

I believe the problem is there is no problem.
Don't bother resizing. That will just make more problems.
Widescreen DV is the same format as Normal DV. The 16x9 format is just a playback property which you enable from whatever app you're using for playback. All you need to do is tell iDVD that the footage is supposed to be in 16x9. I don't use iDVD that much since getting DVDStudioPro so I can't tell you exactly how to do this, but I believe it's a simple checkbox or the like.
Why not use compressor to create a high quality widescreen MP2 and AIF file then import them into DVD Studio Pro? DVD studio is just as easy to use as iDVD once you complete the tutorial and you will have much more control over your presentation. It's a great program to learn if you have FCP studio already.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to make a self-playing DVD from FCP project of 75 minute film.

A Quicktime film has been made in Final Cut. It is about an hour and 15 minutes long. It needs to end up on a self-playing DVD.
Maybe this is a question for the FCP boards (or for DVD SP, which I don't know well): What's the approach to get this project to DVD?---having it look best on the DVD. Are there compression best practices?

Or you may be able to make a Kiosk mode DVD from a QT file / folder using iDVD. (btw ...I've done this successfully thru iDVD6 but I have not yet tried it under iDVD08):
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4764361&#4764361
Please note that this approach is the only way I know of to make a DVD (w/in iDVD) that plays by itself and with no menu whatsoever. Hence the DVD will always play in a continuous loop until you press stop or eject on the remote. Or if you prefer you can also use Roxio Toast which has a similar feature.

  • Problems encoding a DVD from FCP project

I'm trying to create a DVD from a short 3min project I just cut in FCP 6. It is an HD project and when I do a straight QT export the file is about 1.2 gigs and looks great. However, when I try to use compressor to make an MPEG, it may come out looking fine on my computer, but when I burn the DVD it looks blockly and pixelated. I assumed I'd lose some quality going from HD to SD, but this isn't looking right. Even simple the white text supers come out looking bad. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Judge the quality on a TV, not your Mac's display...
Use the high quality 90 minute preset for MPEG (DVD) production, but change the motion estimation to Better from Best... try that seems to me it looks better.

  • Using actual DVD footage in FCP projects

I produced some short movies using iMovie and have them saved as playable movies on DVD using iDVD. I want to incorporate these short movies into a project I am putting together using Final Cut Studio.
What is the best way/software to use to rip my previous movies so that I can use them again as part of my new project. My movies are unprotected so in theory this should be straightforward to do but I don't know where to start.
I have looked at the DVD file structure and all the files are 'Video_TS VOB' files and I have no idea which files are which.
I basically need a way of cutting my movies from my DVD and then being able to reuse them as part of another DVD.
    Any help would be appreciated

Do you have the original source file used to make the DVD? Use those if you can. But MPEG\Stream clip with transcode those VOB file sfor you no problem. I believe QT will open VOB as well. Make sure you export then uncompressed.

  • Creating DVD's from imovie projects: quality issues

Currently have a HD project created in imovie, when burn to a DVD, using the best quality setting there is still a very noticeable decrease in quality compared to viewing in imovie. Any suggestions on maintaining the HD video quality

You need to use Toast to burn HD DVDs. iDVD cannot do this.

  • Freeing up space from FCP project

    Hi All.
I recently shot about 30+ hours of interviews in Europe, captured it all (about 450 gb), made a sequence of each interview, added a translation audio track and then made dupes with in/out points to use as clips. I've ended up with as many dupe sequences as I have "clips".
Now I want to free up space on the hard drive but when I trash the original clips I lose everything. Is there a way or have I painted myself into a box?
    Thanks, SHC

You can use Media Manager to copy just what is contained in the Sequences to another location. Once that's been done successfully, you can delete the original media.

Yar, and the new FCP7 version's almost reliable.
BE SURE YOU TEST the new copy before you delete the old one.

  • Making a DVD from FCP X project

A few projects ago, I could render a movie for DVD from FCP X onto a DVD to burn.  Then, it would be working for hours and hours and never finish.. a day later, it wasn't finished.  Can't make one since.
What could be the problem? I s some part of the process too big for my hardware or software?  Can I change something to allow it to work again?
Any ideas?  Perhaps something is set wrong?
    Thank you for any suggestions.

    What version are you running?
Do you get a Publishing Error -29?

  • How do i take a project from FCP to DVD so it plays on a DVD Player

Help, i need to export a project from FCP in a format which will play on through a UK DVD player and TV. What format do i export to ?
I then understand i need to import this into DVD Studio Pro set it up to Loop and then burn to DVD R, is this correct ?
    Help please
    Hillster

    Export QT/Current Settings/Self Contained/Audio and Video.
Drop it into Compressor and choose the DVD preset that matches the total number of minutes of video and also use dolby2 audio.
    Import into DVD SP.
Delete the menu in the graphic view. Set the track to first play and loop or end jump to itself.
Drop the video and audio assets into that track.

  • Best way to downconvert from FCP to import to a SD DVD SP project?

    hi-
I am working with 1080/80i HDV footage in FCP and would like to create an SD DVD in DVDSP. SO, I need to downconvert my HDV sequence to a lower-res--correct?
I have talked to and/or read stuff from 10 different people today about this and have received 10 different answers. Can anyone chime in and shed some light?
    Should I:
-create a new sequence in FCP and copy/paste my old stuff into it and render out? if so, what res should the sequence be?
-export straight from FCP to a lower res quicktime?
-dump back to tape and then re-import at a lower res?
-export at hi-res and then use some compression software to convert it to low?
    any help would be appreciated--gracias

thanks--i tested that way and it seemed to work well. it takes a while though--15 hours for the whole 45 minute show. the good news is that when you do it that way your chapter markers come through.
    thanks for the help.

  • Imovie09 Burning to DVD from HD project file

I have just burnt a HD edited imovie project file to a DVD using the 'large settings' in IDVD after exporting to media browser. The results when played on a DVD player are extremely low quality. There appears to be a considerable patterning affect on the pictures. The same poor quality is apparent when playing the DVD on the macbook. Playing the AVCHD project in Imovie is fine. Can anyone help with this, or experienced the same problem? I have just upgraded to Snow leopard, and have produced DVDs before using Leopard and Imovie with the same settings. Thanks

So you must downrez at some point in the workflow. Some users have problems and/or think they get better quality out of direct PR/AME exports than using DL for this purpose.
I would test the workflow by creating three short test sequences - one with a clip from one camera, a second from the other, and a third with both in a sequence using the same settings you are using in your edit. I would use the "drag a clip" to the new item method for making each of the first two sequences. By short I mean 30 seconds to 2 minutes with a mixture of still and action.
Export using whatever method you pick of those recommended, but use CBR 8 instead of VBR etc. Bring the resulting files into Encore. Yes, look at the files exported on the computer, and look at Encore preview, etc, but also burn to a disk and watch on multiple TVs. There are lots of issues in best quality.
