Does anyone have a suggestion for producing Enhanced Podcasts using a windows machine?

Image Size for Enhanced podcasts

I've started producing enhanced podcasts but the images never look good. Most are grainy. I've stuck with iTunes recommendation for art work of 300 x 300 pixels at 72 dpi. Is ther a better size/setting?

I've never understood why Apple recommends only 72dpi - perhaps to reduce storage space on their servers. ...Your G5 and PC screens are probably much higher resolution. MacBooks are around 110ppi. Try upping the image setting from 72 to 110 and see if that reduces the grainy appearance.

URL's in Enhanced podcasts not working?

I did some tests tonight, and confirmed that STP2 does NOT properly embed the URL's in enhanced podcasts. I confirmed this by producing a podcast w/ the URL's in Garageband and it works perfectly.
How do things like this slip by the testers and get shipped in final retail by Apple? I bought STP2 specifically do to podcasts, and it can't even do that right.
How do I file a bug with Apple on this?

Viewing chapter artwork in M4A enhanced podcasts

Hi, I just acquired a new iPod Nano.
I can't seem to see the chapter artwork when I listen (and watch) my enhanced audio podcasts (m4a) (Among others This Week in Media and sneaker.fm) .
I'm also a podcast producer and tried watching my podcast on the nano, but unlike my older iPod Photo it does not seem to show the album art coupled to each chapter. Do I miss some sort of setting?
I really really wanted just to see FULL SCREEN chapter artwork while watching the m4a files. Please fix this or help me!

I wanted to add my comments about how disappointing it is to not be able to view enhanced podcasts on the 3G nano. I develop them for educational use (you can embed large images for Quicktime computer based viewing and we have little need for live action video). I do hope Apple gets this fixed-or makes an official pronouncement if they intend to abandon the enhanced format. It would be a REAL pain to have to redo my extant material in the video format. There are many annoying minor bugs in the 1.1 upgrade-these are described in other posts. The price we pay as early adopters I suppose.

Enhanced Podcast breaks in Firefox

We're producing what we call an enhanced podcast. The workflow is completely Apple: iMovie=>GarageBand=>iWeb=>.Mac account. The podcast is audio only, but includes artwork, chapter markers and URLs all done in GarageBand. It plays flawlessly in iTunes, Safari, Opera and Flock, but displays that ugly shadowed Quicktime missing image with a built-in link to Quicktime download when loading in Firefox version 1.5 or 1.0.6. This is all on the same Powerbook G4 running 10.4.5. I've observed the same Firefox behavior on two WindowsXP machines as well, all running Quicktime 7.x. Any ideas?

Enhanced Podcast pics, full screen?...

I can make an enhanced podcast, but the images on the ipod are surrounded by lots of white space. Now as a designer, normally I like white space, but in this case, I would like to fill the screen with the image (like the photos on the ipod photo and nano).
What is the best resolution? Aspect ratio?
Is it possible to make them bigger?

I am VERY interested in this answer...I produce podcasts that are a series of pictures put together in GarageBand. Technically is this still a video podcast? If I try to play them in frontrow they ARE NOT full screen like TRUE video podcasts. What is the difference in the file?

Special Handling of m4a 'enhanced' podcast files?

I decided to try an enhanced podcast for my first attempt at podcasting.
I am getting into trouble.
First I notice that typing the url of my file in a browser window earns me an error message.
MP3s hosted in the same directory load up in a browser window just fine. m4a files somehow don't load at all. 404 error. MIME type error. My host swears there's nothing wrong with the way their servers are set up.
At this point I have:
1 - an enhanced podcast m4a file, produced by Garage Band, and tested fine in iTunes.
2 - a validated rss feed. http://www.asahramusic.net/podcasts/asahrafeed.xml
3 - a 'test' podcast (iWeb) of that same m4a file hosted on my iDisk. http://web.me.com/kolai/Site4/Podcast/Entries/2008/10/30_Sounds_at_thebeach.html
4 - an error message when I try to point my browser to the same file but this time hosted on my 'pro' host. http://www.asahramusic.net/podcasts/AsahraPodcastbyChrisBurns.m4a
Result: When I test the feed in iTunes (Advanced>Subscribe to Podcast) manually, all information tagged in the xml feed shows up fine. When I click to download the actual epidose I see iTunes spinning its wheel for half a second then hanging up. Kinda like my browser does..
Which leads me to believe there's something wrong with the way my host handles m4a files.
I thought I'd ask you all if there's anything I should know about m4a files or hosting enhanced podcasts in general.

The correct URL for your media file appears to be
http://web.me.com/kolai/Site_4//Media/Asahra%20Podcast%20-%20Chris%20Burns%20set .m4a
The '%20' bits are spaces in the filename, and you shouldn't do that, but the file will be located at this URL - I can't actually check whether it plays at the moment (I'm on Linux).
You should use this actual URL in your XML file, not the version starting with the domain name particularly as so far I can't find a version which works).

Enhanced podcasts and iPod display dimming

Can anyone suggest a smart way of ensuring that iPod displays always remain backlit to display the pic content of enhanced podcasts that I produce?
I'd never really thought about this, but if you start playing an enhanced podcast on your iPod (as opposed to in iTunes) the display remains backlit for only a few seconds before it dims, after which any on-screen graphics are all but invisible. Obviously a user can set their iPod to keep the backlight switched on, but it's a pain to keep changing the setting, and a bit clunky to tell people at the start of every show to turn their backlights on in order to see all the graphics and pics.
Is there anything that I can do at the authoring stage (other than producing a video podcast) that will ensure that graphics are always displayed on a backlit screen?

I used to have the setting on my iPod set to have the backlit display on during our graphically enhanced podcast too. The only problem, and the reason I switched it back, was that it causes the battery to go down a lot faster. So that is something to consider too. But as far as I know, the user has to change that setting themselves.

Enhanced podcasts production on Windows

Does anyone know how to produce chapters/enhanced podcasts for the Windows platform? I can't find any tools that streamline the production and frankly am a little lost. Any info appreciated!
To be able to advance one song at a time in one .m4a file would be outstanding! I have been waiting to transfer all of my mix CD's/MiniDiscs to my iPod since I bought the blasted thing.

I created an enhanced podcast using Podcast Maker on a Mac notebook. Everything works fine; i.e., it plays on in iTunes on both a Mac and with Windows XP. However, when I download the .m4a file to my Dell, the file is automatically converted to an mp4 file (!?) and then won't open with QuickTime (even the latest version that download last week with the updated iTunes on the Dell). Any solution to this?

Cons of Enhanced Podcast?

I just started producing a podcast with a couple of students at the school where I teach. We'd like to do an enhanced podcast, along with the 'regular' flavor. Are there any cons to posting an enhanced podcast on the iTunes Music Store? (Listeners can subscribe straight to the regular feed from my web site, or listen on Odeo, as well, so I'm not concerned too much about compatibility...)
Should we just go ahead and make the iTunes feed exclusively enhanced? Leave it as a regular podcast? Or have both a regular and enhanced feed at the iTMS? Anyone have any advice?

When I first started my podcast, I would also include an enhanced version as well, available for download from my podcast site. The concerns I had with making only an enhanced podcast were #1: that those simply visiting the site (and not finding me through iTunes) could not view the enhanced podcast through the browser only. They would have to subscribe through iTunes to see it. #2: that I was not sure what different media players could handle the file types mp4, mov, etc. If a user on a PC did not have Quicktime installed, and I formatted the podcast into a .mov, they might not be able to view without an install.
I think offering both versions is a good way to make sure that all users can have access to your podcast, and I have seen others as well that used the method of offering a download of the enhanced version from their site. Another route may be to start a second feed that is the enhanced version only, so users can subscribe to either version.

I can't seem to find an option for creating an enhanced podcast in mp3 format rather than m4v format. I've tried converting the resulting AAC file to MP3 in iTunes but it seems to wipe the 'enhanced' bits by doing that. Anyone know how to do it?

You can't produce an enhanced podcast as MP3. It doesn't allow for the additional data, and images. You can only use AAC. There is no reason not to use AAC since anyone can play it on PC and Mac.

Looking for Chapter Tool Beta or other app to create enhanced podcasts

Hi all. I am looking at creating enhanced podcasts. On Google I found a mysterious app that Apple has apperantly created - "Chapter Tool Beta". However, all links to this app are dead. Any idea what happened to that app?
Also, what are some alternatives? Garage Band doesn't work well, as in this project I am working on, we have to show a screen shot, then in the next "frame" same screen shot, but with a highlight box over an area. And, it's hard to line up images in GB. Any ideas? Thanks,

I think the Chapter Tool is now dead - though someone did ask about this a few weeks back: it might be worth searching for the thread to see whether anyone could help.
I would suggest you look at Podcast Maker: this will take your pre-existing mp3 files and add chapters and images to make an m4a 'enhanced podcast', and incorporate the information you give it into a feed file. It will then upload the podcast to your iDisk or other server and ping the iTunes Store for you. I've used it for three years now and found it very reliable.

I can't get garageband to export! It keeps getting stuck at 'creating chapters' when I try to export my enhanced podcast. Please help!

I am trying to export my enhanced podcast through garageband. I have all the current updates. I am on my MacBookPro 10.6.8 2.3GHz with 8GB ram. My enhanced podcast (podcast with pictures) is about 80 mins long and I have tried exporting with everything from the lowest settings to the highest always with the same result. I have tried deleting GB preferences. I have tried repairing permissions to no avail.
I hit export to disk or send to itunes.
I select some AAC format I want (optimized for spoken podcast).
It slowly builds the mix, normalizes, and creates chapters (yeah, it goes through the creating chapters bar to completion)
Then it goes all candystripe on the creating chapters bar once it fills up and will hang forever (hung for 8 hours....pretty much sounds like 'forever' in my book).
Please help...I have my podcast sitting there waiting to be used....I have tried exporting smaller chunks (by moving the end of file bar) but that doesn't work either. Is there a way to just send the pictures and the picture start times over to imovie and work with it there? I'd much rather work with the tools that imovie has but man that program is just a PITA to use when you want to run through 100+ pictures for variable durations (whereas it's easy to just drag and drop with garageband as you do playback).
The file only has one stereo audio track!

Enhanced Podcasts Not Enhanced on iPad

Am I overlooking something extremely obvious or are Enhanced Podcasts no longer supported by the 3rd gen iPad (2012)? When I play an enhanced podcast in the Music app, it looks and plays just like any other podcast. I don't see options to select chapters, the artwork doesn't change when a new chapter starts and there are no clickable links.
I really hope this is a bug on the latest iPad or stupidity on my part as I think enhanced podcasts are some of the best around. I'd really hate to loose all the functionality of these wonderful shows.

No where on Apple's site does it say that YOU MUST HAVE CHAPTER TOOL to post enhanced podcasts made in Garage band.

Why doesn't Apple have all the info we need to create and upload enhanced podcasts using Garage band and iweb posting to .mac and itunes?
After many calls to apple care no one mentions this in any support area! Yet at macworld posting an enhanced podcast required no chapter tool or work in Terminal! Please post the actual way to do this! Somewhere official from Apple.
