Producing HD DVD playable in external player

Hi there!
I have a very urgent question that has been adressed in other threads, but I still can't figure it out (sorry!).
Is it possible to produce a HD quality DVD with my iMac that is playable in an external DVD player.
And, if not, how do I get the best possible quality with DVD Studio Pro?
Hope to hear from you SOON :-|
Eric (slightly panicing, since he needs to show something in HD on sunday)

I'm assuming you have a HD DVD player to show this on.
I have the new Toshiba HD-A2 and I can confirm that DVDSP4 will burn red laser HD DVD discs with no menu, BUT the HD DVD player will play it back with no audio.
So far I think the best option for HD DVD playback is to play in on your Mac but hook up the HDTV to it with a HDMI cable and a DVI to HDMI converter coming out of the graphics card on the Mac.

  • Trouble ejecting DVDs (on an external player)

Hello, just got my new 27" iMac.  When I plugged in the old external drive I used to use on my last iMac (24" 2009 model) it worked fine.  However everytime I try to eject a dvd (either by dragging the icon into the trash or pressing the physical eject button on the player itself) I'm told that it can't be ejected because the disc is still in use.  By the way, I've made sure to close DVD Player before hand.
The only way to eject discs is either to reboot the computer or physically unplug the player and then use the physical button to eject it before DVD Player registers it and starts to play the disc.
Obviously this is a pain to do every time.  Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
I am having the same issue with my samsung player (SE-208DB TS01)..
Have you found a solution? This issue is so frustrating and I can't seem to find any solution..
I found both the program and the BIN file here:
    https://tsstodd.com/eng/firmware/fwdownload/?functionvalue=list&product=SDWE&mod el=SE-208DB&searchText=&pTop=150&mTop=0&tabIdx=1
But it doesn't seem to be working (the status is still on 'downloading' but not moving..)
    Thanks,

  • Do I neeed to download a ap to play DVD's on external player

I have a external CD- DVD, Windows 8.1 It will play CD's but not DVD's. Do I need to download a Ap?

    Hi:
To keep the costs of its operating system down, Microsoft decided not to pay the owners of the DVD codecs for the rights to include them in W8 or W8.1 like they did in Windows 7.
If you do not have Cyberlink Power DVD software (and I'm thinking you don't or you would be able to play DVD's), you can probably install this version if your notebook is from HP.

  • How can I coax my Mac to produce a DVD that shows on a DVD player through my flat screen?

How can I coax iPhoto, iTunes or the Desktop (right click | Burn) into producing a DVD of a slideshow from IPhoto, saved to iTunes and to the Desktop as a movie (*.m4v) -- that will show on my Sony flat screen connected to my Blu-Ray DVD player?
Everything I’ve tried so far has failed. iDVD failed so badly I tossed it out, at the recommendation of someone at Apple.

    You cannot.

    Works fine here.
    How was it not working?

    Hi
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
    • iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
    • DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
    • Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
    • Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
only You can buy from Apple is
    • FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.

  • I think the DVD player reader on my Mac is going bad. Is there a way to copy the files off of an Apple Install DVD onto an external drive and then do theinstall from the external drive?

I think the DVD player reader on my Mac is going bad. Until I get it fixed Is there a way to copy the files off of an Apple Install DVD onto an external drive and then do theinstall from the external drive? It's ILife 11 if that makes a difference. Finder won't let me see the files to copy. I know - dumb question.
    Thanks.

Adding an SSD is not a simple endeavour like adding additional memory or adding another hard drive to a Mac Pro. That's probably why the option is only offered as an option at the time of purchase. Even if your Apple store was willing to install the necessary parts you will probably be paying for 1-2 hours of labor plus the cost of purchasing the necessary service parts (SSD, bracket, cables, etc) which I suspect will make the upgrade cost much higher than what it costs to add the SSD option when purchasing a new system.
I use my system for business and need it to work reliably.  Even though I'm fairly handy with tools I would not be willing to risk damaging my system and voiding my warranty by opening my system and removing the logic board and several other parts in order to squeeze in an SSD option and attach the appropriate cables and brackets. I'm also not prepared to deal with the hassles of explaining why my system has unauthorized parts installed in the event I experience issues and need to make use of my Apple warranty. My time is valuable, so I would probably investigate external storage options, or if I needed the speed of an SSD, I would consider selling my existing system and then purchase a new system configured with an SSD.
If you haven't already done so I suggest doing a search on 'iMac SSD installation' to see what's involved. It might help you understand why the SSD option is not offered post purchase.

  • How do I make my DVD playable in DVD Studio Pro?

I never use to have problems with DVD Studio Pro until I got my new MacBook Pro.
I'm making a wedding DVD with a couple menus and projects and it seems to all work just fine.
I only encouter a problem when I go to check to DVD after it is done buring.
When I pop it in both a DVD player and the computer, nothing happens. It says the disk is unreadable or nothing at all happens.
I'm not sure what to do because I don't even know what is wrong.
DVD Studio Pro isn't telling me anything is wrong and that it is buring just fine.
I have also tried multiple different exported versions of my projects and nothing has imporved or even changed.
Any tips on how to make my DVD playable?

Did you do a build and format? If so, check out the contents of the TS folder.
Often people report similar problems and it turns out they inadvertently made an HD DVD…though I would think it should play in your Mac if that were the case. But check your settings nonetheless.
Are you doing the encode in Compressor?

  • Satellite A105-S2101 - Can't watch DVDs with Express Media Player

I got this Satellite A105-S2101 notebook computer, and the LCD blew out on me within 2 years.
Luckily, I can still make use of the VGA, and S-Video outputs, but it may as well be a desktop PC now. Anyway, I just wanted to add that because of this problem, I no longer am able to watch DVDs with Express Media Player because it wont accept VGA or S-Video as defaults just my busted-up, good-for-nothing, always blurry anyway LCD.
It's only when I am in Windows mode that I can toggle to an external monitor.
The reason I write is, if there ever was a need to add anything for an update to EMP--now's the time and that would be something to add to it. What the heck?

    Hi
I think the Express Media Player does not run in Windows mode
I mean it's not neccessary to run the Windows OSin order to run Express Media Player and therefore the video output does not work in connection with EMP.
I think you will have to use an Windows based software player VLC player is very nice. I use it too its small, free tool and you can play almost all files audio and video.

  • I inserted my CD into the external player incorrectly.  How do I get the disc out?

I inserted a CD into my external player incorrectly into my MacBook Air and can't get the disc out.  What do I do?

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
      1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
      2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
      3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
      4. Press COMMAND-E.
      5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
            /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • Is it possible to boot to a Windows 7 install DVD from an external USB drive on current iMacs?

On the iMac I'm currently using, a mid-2007 24-inch, it's impossible to boot into a Windows install DVD from an external drive: I can hold down option on boot, and all my hard drives come up, but if the Windows disc is in my external DVD drive, it won't show up. I'll soon be upgrading to a late 2012 iMac, and I'd like to be able to install Windows 7 for a boot camp partition. Since that iMac has no built in drive, I'd like to know if using an external DVD drive will work on that model. I'd like to do that, seems easier than messing around with disk images. But we'll see...

You can use an external optical drive to install Windows without any problem with a Late 2012 iMac.
The reason that you couldn't install Windows from an external optical drive on the 2007 iMac is that it has got an internal SuperDrive, so Apple only allows you to use it to install Windows on your iMac

  • DVD Studio Pro - How to create a DVD playable on all mediums

I'm trying to create a DVD playable on all mediums, i.e Mac, PC, home DVD players. I have placed all assets in appropriate places etc, menus built correctly, end jumps etc set correctly. The simulation shows me what the DVD will play like on my mac, but when I burn (in HD mode using either DVD+RW or DVD+R DL) it does not play on PC or other DVD players, including my PS3 or XBOX360 any ideas why?

If you're in HD mode you're making a HD DVD. Search for info on it as there are lots of threads on here but basically you can only play HD DVD content (even if on DVD-R etc) in HD DVD Players. Not PS3, DVD Players and so on. If you have the (discontinued) 360 HD DVD drive add-on you can get the 360 to play it too.
If you want better luck you'll need to use SD DVD and search for tips on that.

  • DVD not playing on player

I am new to DVD Studio Pro, I created a project and clicked build and format. I then put the DVD-R into my player to make sure it would work and no luck. I tried to emulate and still nothing. I can simulate and it works perfectly fine. Any tips or suggestions.

    Mr.Ocean:
Wellcome to the forums. (I allways wanted to say that !!)
There are so many reasons that can cause that, that we need more detailed information to find most probable origin of the problem:
    - Are you tring to buil a HD DVD?It will play only in your computer, not in a stand alone player&TV set.
    - Are you receiving any error message during building?
I tried to emulate and still nothing.
What do you mean with emulate?
Try opening the VIDEO_TS folder created in your hard drive with DVD Player to check it runs.
Sorry for not beeing too much specific, but probably after you post some more info someone in this side can help you.

  • Apple TV 2, DVD's, and external hard drives

Hello All...Here is what I am trying to accomplish:
1 Burn DVD's to external hard drive
2 Use Apple TV to play DVD's on brand new Panasonic Plasma via the external storage device.
I've got a 3 month old macbook pro running mountain lion, a Buffalo MiniStation Thunderbolt HD-PATU3 with 1TB of space, apple tv, wireless router, and a Panasonic TC-P50UT50
What I'm looking for is some direction in the best way to get the DVD's onto the hard drive and ultimately play on the TV. I read that an uncompressed DVD takes up about 7GB of space which is too much considering the hundreds of movies I have. So, what is a good software to rip the DVD's to itunes as well as compress the files without losing a lot of quality?
After the compressed files are on the external hard drive am I able to somehow play them using the Apple TV interface?
If not I suppose I could just plug the external hard drive into the side of the TV using the USB 3.0 or HDMI port, but part of the reason I bought the Apple TV was that I thought this was possible.
    Thank you,
    RR

Unfortunately, commercial DVDs that you have bought 99.9% of the time will be copy protected and Apple's forum terms prohibit discussion of circumventing the copy protection.  In various places circumventing digital copy protection is potentially illegal even if you own and intend to keep the DVD.  Hence Apple do not wish DVD rippers etc discussed here.
Another problem is that AppleTv cannot play back DVDs copied to an external drive as it does not understand the format.  So even if you can 'copy' your DVDs you then need to convert to h264 format to play on AppleTV.
Video formats for AppleTv are limited.  They also do not support DVD like menu structures (thogh AppleTV 1 did with itunes Extras movies).
If you have unprotected video you wish to convert eg home video on DVD, then something like Handbrake or MPEGStreamclip with Apple's MPEG2 component might do the job.  These programs are not DVD rippers but can process unprotected MPEG2 video.

i want to produce wedding dvds.whats the best software to use...final cut x I'm thinking but what about the quality of the dvd? Can i use idvd?

The only Programms I worked with are DVD Studio Pro and iDVD. You can burn a Video-DVD with Toast but  there is no real option to design your Menu. Just a few themes as far as I discovered.
Do you have a Blue Ray Device to burn* the HD-DVD? Are the Bride and Groom able to watch the Blue Ray?
    * which is only possible with DVD Studio Pro and not iMovie as far as I know.
    This might help
For better quality I would go the Compressor & DVD Studio Pro workflow I just learned.
Export the Movie as is from Final Cut Pro and then use Compressor to encode the File.
Consider delivering the Movie in a different way like a private video on vimeo, a Website or on an SD card which is not really romantic...
