Producing Tape Masters using DV Print to Video produces artifacts

Hi,
I'm working on a documentary project and a lot of the archive vendors are supplying us with QuickTimes instead of tape for the master versions.
I need to put these on tape, because they are for multiple edit suites and also for Avid suites. Its so we can use the tapes cross-platform but also save time and money by being able to auto-conform from tape in the Online suite, otherwise it wastes loads of time and money by importing these files from DVD.
I want to be able to create DV masters, a lot of the files we receive are uncompressed Photo-JPEGs (i know this by using Quicktime's Inspector command to display the movies stats, also from the Browser in FCP6).
I was under the impression Photo-JPEG was of a lesser quality than DV, as Photo JPEG is what is created when using offline video in FCP (albeit in smaller dimensions).
BUT, when I export these files as DV PAL uncompressed, the image is a lot worse, specifically very soft. I can print to tape, however.
So, I have tried playing out these files to DV tape in their native Photo JPEG compression, from a DV timeline, which doesn't work. I cant print to tape. I'm guessing because its using the Photo JPEG compressor? The image looks perfect, however.
Another way I've tried is to lay these native files in a DV timeline, then render using the DV compressor. The picture looks as clear as the native files, but there are horizontal/diagonal lines where different lines of colour appear on the image. For example, a woman's spectacles have zebra zig zags along the rims, but her face is fine.
I have tried using every different field dominance with no change, also interlaced and progressive scan, no change.
Needless to say, I need to make these tapes at full quality as they are all for broadcast.
Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the input.
I know, we are having a real war with the vendors at the moment, they should be supplying the tapes.
The situation is, they will supply them how they are free of charge, or create 8 or 10 bit uncompressed versions for us and lay them to digibeta at an extortionate price.
This is the first project I've been on when they operate in this way.
I need to make DV for a simple reason. COST.
We don't have a digibeta recorder, which cost about £30,000 and can't afford one. We are a small company. If it was up to me we'd buy the deck.
We have a digibeta player, so if they supplied us in the NORMAL fashion (quite annoyed at them at the mo), we could dig in 8-10bit uncompressed. I have to run this one deck between 4 suites as it is. We have plenty of digi stock to do this, too. Its a pretty stupid setup for a big project, but we dont have the money.
The files aren't being resized as such, they are supplying 720x576 PAL, if that's what you mean Jerry.
Jerry, I tried to change Motion filter to "Best", it retains the clarity of the source, but still has the horizontal lines around the woman's glasses. Could the quality of the codec they supply us with be the issue in the first place? It seems fine when you play it thru Quicktime player.
Another thought I had would be to run them off onto XDCAM (we have one Sony PDW-F70 recorder deck and plenty of stock as that is the format they shoot rushes/dailies with). Would this be possible to do this with my Macbook Pro? Like via Firewire? Especially if they supplied us the 8-10 bit files? I've tried to get it to work but can't as yet.
I need to get the best from what I have.
Any other ideas?
Thanks again guys

  • Print to Video Trouble (Pictures Shatter)

    Hi,
I am really out of ideas. for months now after editing my programme on Final cut pro 5, when I want to master back to tape using the 'Print to video' option, it starts well. After some minuites into the mastering process, the whole screen will shatter for a second or two and then, the pictures on my master and my computer will become out of sync with each other. This happens at times twice over a 26mins programme. its really iriitating and this shattering of screen goes into the master tape version. Any suggestions Please?
I will really appreciate it as I am desperate to resolve this.
Thanks for your help in adavance.

    Uvi,
I know how frustrating it is to have difficulty outputting.
I don't know what specifically is causing issues, but one thing I have tried in the past is...
    Highlight the timeline.
Option - X (this clears ins and outs)
    Command-Shift A (this de-selects everything)
    File>Export>Quicktime Movie...
Choose Current settings and check "Make movie self-contained" (this makes you movie into one Quicktime file - it also takes up a bit of disk space)
Name your file and navigate to where you want to save it (I usually place it on the desktop temporarily, but you may have an organization structure that you follow.)
    Save.
When it is done, import that file (Command-I) into your project.
    Create a new sequence.
Drop your newly imported movie into the sequence.
    Then print that to tape.
If that doesn't work, I suggest you provide more background about your set-up. For instance, what format you are exporting, what kind of tape deck, how much ram in your computer, how full your media drive is, etc. One of these things is probably the real culprit. My technique is treating the symptom, not the disease.

  • Print to Video, Playback Output Video for 1080i60 Codec?

Could someone who is using Final Cut Express 4.0 please check the characteristics under Easy Setup / HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60, as to whether FCE 4.0 provides a “Playback Output Video” capability.
In FCE 3.5, the pull down menu: Final Cut Express HD / Easy Setup / HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60, “Playback Output Video” is not available, ie “None”.
I have been using the “Print to Video” command within Final Cut Express 3.5 to export my edited video (NTSC 720x480) back onto my Sony mini DV TRV70 camcorder for archival purposes. This is usually something I do after burning discs using iDVD.
I’m about to purchase a Canon HV30 hi-def camcorder, and in the same way, would like to archive my hi def edited videos, ......that is, after burning some DVD’s, I want to archive the entire 1080i60 version back onto tape using the Print to Video command and Rec Cntrl function of the camcorder. However, the “Playback Output Video” feature of FCE 3.5 for 1080i60 seems to be “None”.
Appreciate any info as to whether FCE 4.0 has this feature, or are there any other ideas out there that would accomplish the same objective.
    Thanks in advance,
    BoBo

    Hi Michel (Bonjour)
Thanks again for responding, and providing a number of good references for Blu Ray burning and burners.
I recently “captured” a short Hi Def, 2 minute bird feeder video from my Canon HV30 with Final Cut Express HD 3.5, and placed the imported segment on the Time Line viewer. All of this with FCE set in the 1080i60 AIC codec.
With no editing nor transitions nor effects, I then did a “Print to Video” of this Time Line segment, and recorded it back onto the Canon, positioning it on the tape directly following the original recording.
I then rewound the mini DV tape, and played back the two videos from the Canon into my high definition Samsung via HDMI. I couldn’t tell the difference between the two video samples, …….the original recording compared with the copy that was captured by FCE and re-recorded back onto tape.
I then took this same Time Line segment, exported to a QuickTime self contained movie (sequence), and then dragged that QT sequence into iDVD (Version 7.0.3) widescreen theme pane. It took about 30 minutes to process and burn that same short ( ~2 min) segment to a DVD using my iMac 2.1Ghz G5 w/ standard Super Drive.
I then played back that DVD disc on my HD Samsung through a standard DVD Player (no up converting capability) and could see a good rendition of the video sample, but fuzzy in spots especially during slow panning, …..a good video but NOT certainly the Hi Definition quality that I saw during playback from the Canon mini DV tape playback.
A question for you experts……is the degradation seen during DVD playback caused by the iDVD software not producing a 1060i Hi Def rendition, ….or is the DVD ok and the fact that I did not have an unconverting or Blu Ray DVD player the reason for the lack of non hi-def quality from the DVD?
Michel, …..I have not as yet purchased Toast 10 with the HD plugin. Would you expect that I would see an improved version, ….a nearly Hi Def rendition if I had used Toast 10 instead of iDVD? Or do I have to go the distance!…….that is, Toast 10, a Blu Ray burner, and Blu Ray Player as well!…..to see a version of my 2 minute sample as good as what my Canon HV30 playback is showing me?
    Once again, Thanks in advance

  • Print to Video not working!!

I'm using Final Cut Express 2.0.3. and I'm having a helluva time!
Right now, I'm trying to export my movie I made back onto a miniDV tape .... using the "PRINT TO VIDEO" option under the FILE heading. It starts to play on the computer, I have my Canon video camera hooked up via FireWire, the camera starts to record, but I don't get any image on the camera - no image or audio. Is there some option I'm missing???
    Thanks!

Perhaps also make sure that your camera is on "VTR" or playback mode, instead of record mode when you actually shoot images from the camera. Or "Refresh" video devices; hope this helps a bit.

  • Weird audio issue when printing to video

I am attempting to dub a couple of old projects to tape using the Print to Video command (firewire connection to Panasonic DVX-100A MiniDV camera). I have used this method many times in the past with success. However, I have now tried two different projects tonight and had the same strange issue: The project plays back perfectly normally in the timeline, through the computer speakers, but when I Print to Video, there will be one part where a small audio "blip" can be heard. It sounds like either a snippet of tone or the sound of un-rendered audio... except it's all rendered.
Anybody have any suggestions? It's really weird that it plays back something different in Print to Video than it does in regular playback... Any help is appreciated.

That did it, thanks! I feel kind of dumb, I've never used that function before. Is that something I should have been doing all along? Anyway, thanks again. It's nice to get a response and have it work on the first try. So refreshing.

  • Print to video failure

  • Print to video vs edit to tape - which to use?

I'm new to FCP. I want to output to a tape that has not been entirely blacked or striped. Should I use Edit to Tape assemble edit? Or will Print to Video work?
    thanks!

Thanks. I just read the user manual PDF and think that is the way I am going to go. I want to start at 01:00:00;00 and be frame accurate.
    thank you!!

  • Having trouble with audio edit to tape, print to video ok

Hi all, please go easy on me, this is my first post.
I am having difficulty getting audio on to tape via 'edit to tape'.
The hardware is blackmagic decklink extreme, feeding component video and analoge audio to a UVW-1800P.
I can do a print to video on a crash record and the audio works that way, but edit to tape does not.
I have tried both deck link and built in audio in the audio settings and the FCP a/v settings, seperate and ganged output settings, I have set the insert settings to 2 channel Sony, reloaded the decklink drivers.
The irritating thing is the audio is there whilst cutting, but as soon as I try edit to tape there is complete silence. The important thing is that it worked a few weeks back but does not now, it must be a setting?
Thanks in advance for your help.
This machine I am working with this week is an Intel MacPro running FCP 5.1.2 and Mac OS 10.4.8
    G5 Dual 2GHz-Blackmagic Decklink Pro, G3 with Sonnet G4 upgrade   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    G5 Dual 2GHz-Blackmagic Decklink Pro, G3 with Sonnet G4 upgrade   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I had this same problem and this resolved it for me:
-Go to your "Settings" icon and click on the "General" tab.
-About 2/3 way down the page you will see "Use side switch to:" - make sure "mute" is checked rather than "lock rotation."
-Then make sure the side switch, located next to the volume toggle switch on the side of your ipad, is moved to the right (no red dot showing).
My audio worked fine in embedded videos after I did those two things.  Hope it works for you.

  • I can't use the function of "print to video".

I've recently purchased FCPX and Blackmagic Design Decklink HD Extreme 3(version 7.5.2) but I already know this combination looks quite weird because I'm using only DSR. This is the first time I have installed FCP.
I installed FCPX and figured out there's no way to get the video from Decklink on FCPX so that I deleted FCPX, installed FCP 2009 instead and installed FCPX again on the same disk as Final Cut Pro 7... It's a shame to get rid of it.
At first, I could get a good result when printing to tape. There's no problem. But it's not long before I failed to get what i wanted. VCR detects input signal from FCP 7 through Decklink but the monitor of VCR shows only noise. For now, I can't use the function of "print to video".
Also, I connect the input of Decklink to the output of DSR and the output of Decklink to the input of DSR at the same time and monitor w/ the output of DSR. However, the output on the monitor shows something weird when I capture the video from DSR as if the signal is fed back.
Someone told me that I have to use other version of decklink but i'm not sure it would be better if I just change the version.
    What's wrong?
What should I do for fixing these all mess?

I am not really sure how to set the camera in this VTR mode... I have tried in the settings to set it in webcam mode... and I have tried without... and I dont have a button or setting called VTR, only a *PLAY' option or a 'FILMØ option....
My A/V settings are FireWire PAL and DA PAL 48khz ... however have no ide what that means or if these should be changed...?
I checked from apple but cannot find my DV cam on the list... hmm, does that mean I cannot do edit to tape recordings???

    OS 10.4.11
I use the version FCP 2
Please help me out, I am really without any good suggestions how to proceed!

You're going to have to use a dvd authoring program. Burning the seq to a dvd qill just create a qt movie on a dvd data disc. It won't create a dvd video disc that plays in a dvd player.
Export from fcp a QT movie, current settings, self-contained. Use Anamorphicizer (http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Video/Anamorphicizer.shtml) to make imovie recognise it as 16:9. Then import that file to idvd.
Or you can drop your 16:9 sequence into a new 4:3 sequence to letterbox it, then you can do the export as above but skip the anamorphicizer step.
It's better to use compressor on the original 16:9 sequence and then use dvdsp to author, but if you've never used dvdsp it's a big program to get your head round.
    The export can be done in two ways;
    1. Export from fcp using 'export using compressor'.
    2. Export a QT ref/self-contained movie and import that into compressor.
    3. Export a QT movie and import it direct into DVDSP.
The second option will take longer initially (if you use the self-contained option) but will then allow compressor to work in the background, the first option will tie up fcp for the duration of the encode.
Once in compressor use one of the 16:9 dvd presets, depending on the duration of the movie and the quality you want. Don't try to adjust the settings. If your movie is 31 mins just use the shortest option (i think it's 60min) and make sure you select the m2v video and ac3 audio options. If you just select the mpeg 2 video you'll only get video, as you've discovered.
Open dvdsp and create your opening menu and a video track, import the movie file, add it to the video track, and then add the audio to the track as well. Then add any chapter submenus you may want.

  • HV20 and Print to Video or Edit to Tape?

Has anyone figured out the workflow for final cut pro and getting video back out to tape using
    "print to video"
    or
    "edit to tape"
with "edit to tape" I get an "unable to initialize" error where it tells me to check the audio/video settings.
    with "print to video"
I'm using the record/pause function from page 71 of the manual, but the hv20 doesn't see to see a signal. Also the playback on the mac is interesting. it's in the middle of the screen, and not showing the full resolution..
basically I'm just trying to dub an hdv tape.
    thanks!
    -Josh

ok, the only things listed in the audio/video settings are the ntsc and pal firewire devices.
when I try to set it to hdv 1080i60 firewire basic, I get the error:
unable to locate the following external devices:
    HDV (1440 x 1080) 60i
but the camera is both connected... and on. Is there a reason it would see the camera as an SD device instead of a HD device?

  • Print to video using a DSR45

I am planning to lay off to tape on a DSR45 and need it to have timecode. I'm told the DSR45 does not do 'edit to tape' so plan to use 'print to video'
Will the deck generate a timecode while it records or does it come from FCP?
I want to ensure it has a timecode but not sure if there's any setting I may need to check.
    thanks for any help!

I think you can get what you need from it. The time code settings seemed a little quirky the couple times I've used one. Sony publishes the manuals.

  • Print to video - no picture printed on tape

I´ve tried to output HD material from my project back to a tape. I have a Sony HVR Z1U Camcorder. The sequence plays well on my computer and my camcorder even starts to record but there is no picture transmitted to the tape.
I´ve used the Easy Set Up - HDV 1080i50 (filmed in 1080i50)
    Where is the problem?
    Thanks in advance

You have to use PRINT TO VIDEO to get it out to tape. It doesn't work like DV does....there is no realtime output to the camera. And when you do print to video, you will have a while to wait as it prepares the video.

  • Print to video vs. edit to tape

what is the preferred format? i've been using print to video
but i hear edit to tape is a lot better.
did a search but not much came up.
    any comments?

Print to video just outputs the timeline to tape...to possibility of timecode lock. It preps the cut then prompts you to press record.
Edit to Tape gives deck control. And it allows for locking the deck to output to your timelines timecode...with the show starting at hour 1;00;00;00.

  • Trying to print to video using in and out

I am trying to print to video (Mini DV) using in and out points. It works fine when I just play through the camera and record and it will print to video when I start at the beginning, but when I place in and out points and I have set the media to print "In to Out", but it just records the black leader then stops.

For exporting, IN and OUT points must be set in the +timeline of the sequence+ you want to export: make sure the timeline is selected, but NO clip in the timeline is selected before setting the points (use ****-cmd-A to deselect all clips).
If they are properly set you'll see an highlighted area in the timeline between the IN and the OUT points.
