Product recovery for dual boot T60

I've got a T60 that dual boots windows and Ubuntu. My goal is to reinstall windows on the windows partition while leaving the ubuntu partitions alone. However, the recovery utility appears to only allow for a fully harddrive wipe and reinstallation. Is there a way to reduce the scope of the wipe so that it only wipes and reinstalls on my windows partition? I have no data on the windows side that I need to save, but am trying to avoid having to reinstall Ubuntu as well.

I too have a similar setup. I'd simply use a windows setup disc to do the install. It's much faster and the product recovery discs install 5year old OS/software/drivers, all of which will need updating anyway.

Installing Rescue & Recovery on a dual-boot T60

Should I be surprised that the installation of Rescue and Recovery 4.5 fails on a dual-boot T60? It has had a recent upgrade from WinXP to Win 7 32-bit and I have since deleted the old SERVICEV0001 partition. Linux Mint 11 is on another partition and grub is launched in the C: partition. The error I get when the installer has unpacked the kit and starts to run the .msi is: "Error 25014.There was an error installing the Rescue and Recovery boot manager. Return code: 6."
I did have to do a repair job on grub as a result of deleting that service partition. Unbeknown to me, grub had been previously running on there.
The BIOS version is 2.23 from Sept 2008. I see that a v.2.34 is available. Could this be what is throwing this installation? Are there any known pitfalls with this BIOS update?
I do have a second hard-drive in the Ultrabay and I note that, since the OS upgrade, that drive is stealing the drive0 (sda) slot and forcing the boot drive to be drive1 (sdb). This doesn't bother grub; but does the R & R installer perhaps want the Ultrabay empty?

No, dual boot will not be the key points here.
"WE COULD NOT UPDATE THE SYSTEM RESERVED PARTITION" This error poped up might be caused by the low space on your system reserved partition, you may take a look at the partition usage through Disk management.
Further, in addition to upgrade your Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, you may also consider to install Windows 10 on another clean partition, which will make your system triple-boot. Or consider to take use of Hyper-V.

Attempted to install windows 7 for dual boot but OSX installation now missing???

I've tried to install Wndows 7 on my macbook air for dual boot but got the kernal error on boot.
I loaded from the CD again and it sucessfully installed win 7 but when I start the macbook air up it only appears to have windows installed?
How can I get my OSX back?

For some odd reason when you use bootcamp to install the second OS bootcamp is defaulted as the primary OS you will need to hold option key to select the apple OS then in the sys preference under startup disk select apple as primary.

I have dell laptop with excellent configuration. On which i had windows 7 Home premium on C Drive and Windows server 2008 on D Drive.
Now i upgraded my Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. But after fresh installation of Win 7 Ultimate my dual boot screen has gone and Win 7 is getting start directly.
Now i want to add my Windows server 2008 again for dual boot which is still on D Drive.
Can anyone please tell me how to add windows 2008 boot option in boot configuration to active my dual boot options.

1) Using bcdedit.exe /enum
To enable the computer to also boot Windows 7 you again use bcdedit.exe with the following command which will copy the current Windows
Boot Loader details for Windows Server 2008 to Windows 7.
bcdedit.exe /copy
{current} /d "Microsoft Windows 7"
bcdedit.exe will
respond with something like the following.

entry was successfully copied to {................................}.
Using
bcdedit.exe /enum to again enumerate through the current entries within the BCD store you'll see the newly added entry.
Before you can use the newly created Windows boot loader configuration, you'll need to change the partition for Windows 7 using
the following two bcdedit.exe commands.
bcdedit.exe /set {.................................} device partition=D:
bcdedit.exe /set {.................................} osdevice partition=D:
If you now reboot the system you should now be able to boot into either Windows Server 2008 or Windows 7.

How to best partition the HDD for dual boot: Windows 8 & Linux

I'm a newbie in Windows 8, linux, Partition....
I would like to use my new laptop with windows 8 pre-installed to the following:
Create a Dual Boot Windows 8 / Ubuntu
Create on my C drive (unique drive on my laptop):
*a partition for the system
*one for Windows 8
*one for Data and
*last one for Ubuntu OS
My aim is :
-to install VmWare on Windows 8 and run Checkpoint Splat with virtual machines to perform CCSA labs.
to install GNS3 on Ubuntu for CCNP labs but with GNS3 accessing files in the Data partition
I have a Toshiba Satellite with 750Gb and 8 Go RAM.
According to you what's the best size for my partitions?
Is there a better way to partition my C drive regarding my aim?

Isn't it too much 200G for Windows as i will on ly install VMWARE Workstation 9 for lab purposes and possibly a few softwares.
VMWARE installed on Windows will require 2 GB + 1 GB per host (i will use approximatively 15 hosts).
Checkpoint products will be installed on VMWARE that is installed in Windows :
- disk space needed for 3 Checkpoint gateways: 3*37 GB
- disk space needed for 2 Checkpoint gateways management servers: 2*10 GB
On Linux I'll install GNS3 with 10 GB disk space required and a few softwares.

I have a Toshiba Satellite S55t-B5233 Pre-installed with Windows 8.1
I would like to maintain Windows 8 but to dual boot with Windows 7, Ubuntu and OpenSuse, so:
- When I try to Shrink disk C (943371 MB) it says that 'Size of available shrink space in MB = 469651 MB'. The free space in my disk is 885240 MB!
So I would like to know if there is a way to left about 200000 MB for Windows 8? so I could use the rest of space for shrinking for other OS...
- I would instal windows 7, ubuntu and OpenSuse in partitions D, E and F [Partitions that I pretend to create by shrinking C] ... a) does it will void my warrantee? b) does it will render my Windows 8 “Recovery Partition” useless?

I don't recommend you attempt multiple-booting in this new UEFI/GPT world, Gari. Things are more difficult now than they were in the BIOS/MBR world. Best to set up virtual machines using Hyper-V or another free VM to run other OSes.
In answer to your questions,..
a. Toshiba doesn't care what you do with the software. They won't even look at the computer until the drive has been restored to its original out-of-the-box contents.
b. After you mess around with the partition locations, I doubt the recovery partition would be accessible in the normal fashion if at all. Many create a recovery drive and delete the recovery partition first thing.

Trouble with Product Recovery for Satellite L450 D

I've had a big problem with my L450 D and was advised by the warranty provider to use the Product Recovery disc. I have done this but I am unable to get past the following command:

Can anyone tell me what this means and how I can get past it to continue with product recovery on my laptop please?

Why HDD1 if you use recovery disc?
Start your notebook and press F12. When the boot menu is shown put recovery disc in optical disc drive. Choose CD/DVD drive on the list and press ENTER.
Follow the menu on the screen and see what will happen. at first the whole image will be copied to second partition and when it is finished OS installation will start.
If the recovery installation cannot be done properly either is installation image screwed-up or your HDD make problems.
Sorry but I don't have other explanation for this.

How to install Arch for dual-boot with Win 7 (on 2 hard drives)?

the TLDR first: how exactly should I proceed when setting up GRUB for 2 hard drives to dual-boot Arch (64 bit)and Win 7 (64 bit)?
Long version: So, I have the following hard drive & partition layout:
On my first hard drive (250 GB big) I have: Win 7 64 bit, all the programs for Windows and of course the EFI partition
My second hard drive is 1 TB big and formatted in NTFS and it only contains data. It has 2 partitions, one is about 750 GB big and used for simple storage.
Sidenote 1: sometimes my disk management (Windows' own gparted) shows either the little disk or the big one as disk 0. Don't know what exactly this means, but I have never ever experienced any problems whatsoever during use.
Sidenote 2: the UEFI motherboard (ASRock H67M) cannot boot into Legacy mode.
I want to install Arch on a ~200 GB partition on the second hard drive (the one with 1 TB). (click here if you want to see a screenshot) I am posting this because I am confused with how exactly I should deal with the whole "2 hdds & UEFI" thing.
So how exactly should I proceed when setting up GRUB for this setup?
For partitioning I suppose I would have to use fdisk or cgdisk. I used cgdisk before and found it to be straightforward. Then, because I have experienced my fair share of problems with rEFInd, I'd like to use GRUB.

As on sidenote 2, according to the manual it seems to be possible to boot legacy mode, see Storage Configuration.

Best protocol for dual booting on a hardware RAID 0 array?

Hi folks. I would like to dual boot Windows 7 and Arch. I'll append the specs. I have a Terrabyte to split evenly between the two drives - each is 500G. Unless someone can come up with a reason and convince me otherwise, I want to do away with the RAID array. There's no redundancy anyhow and the speed I would lose breaking the array is negligible, therefore irrelevant.
My issue is that I have a RAID 0 hardware array with Intel Rapid Storage Technology as the controller. The computer did NOT come with a Windows disk, but rather a recovery partition. It is my understanding that if I break the array, I will lose the recovery partition and will not be able to reinstall Windows - which I need. IF....the recovery partition can be unphased by breaking the array and I can use it to reinstall Windows, I would prefer that since I may need to recover Windows in the future. It's not a deal breaker if I can't keep the recovery partition, since I have the Windows key.
Is this the ideal protocol?:
1. Backup - I plan on using Alienware Respawn or Clonezilla to backup to a CD and will also backup to an external drive.
2. Break array, but do not alter BIOS to AHCI - leave as RAID.
3. Restore Windows on one drive.
4. Install Arch on second drive.
5. Configure GRUB.
6. Smoke stogie or alternatively weep because I turned my computer into a brick.
At which stage does the partitioning come in? Before or after breaking the array? Is there a better method, than the one I listed. I have spent days scouring Google and the forums and while it's easy to find info on breaking a hardware RAID, there isn't much on doing this with the recovery partition and Alienware Respawn aspects involved. Any help would be appreciated. Please don't kill me or shred my diameter.

I think the big thing will be backing up. I don't know anything about the two programs you would use, but I know that if I dd copy the disks, I would have to change the size of the partitions to match the size of the new partitions. IE: I have Arch installed on a RAID0 of 32GB each, and if I wanted to break my RAID and install on just one disk, I would have to shrink the size of my dd'ed copy to match the smaller drive.
Otherwise, it looks like you have the right idea, or at least the right direction.

Partitioning a disk for dual boot

My system disk failed last week. The media just stopped holding a proper magnetic charge so I ended up with loads of bad blocks.
The disk was 120 GB in size.
I replaced it with a 500 GB model. But I didn't need the extra space for the system disk so I partitioned it into 2 drives (Mac OS Extended). The first one I set to 185 GB and the second one I made 300 GB. The rest of the space was lost due to rounding.
I restored the 185 GB partition from my backup copy (Retrospect 5) and was quite satisfied with the results - Mac OS 9.2.2. I also was able to access the other (empty) partition successfully.
I booted the system into 9.2.2 from partition #1 and decided to install OS X on the larger partition. So I loaded up the Tiger Install disk #1. The install process started but when I was asked to select a target drive the empty second partition was not in the list of choices.
Why?
I want to have a dual boot capability on the single drive. How do I do that?

Also, a question on windows. It uses 1 partition for everything, then allows you to create logical ones, right?

What Mardoct said about resizing w/ gparted is true, so unless you have the data backed-up, do it as your own risk. Can you post a screenshot of a gparted map of your drive?
As you know, Win needs to be the first partition on the drive. You are limited to four primary partitions, so if you want more, make three primary partitions, then the rest of the space an an extended partition. Inside the extended partition, you can add many logical partitions. I'd recommend doing all this from within gparted.
My 1 TB drive example:
/dev/sda1 (primary for windows), 20 gigs
/dev/sda2 (primary for Arch), 20 gigs
/dev/sda3 (backup of my Arch partition), 20 gigs
/dev/sda4 (EXTENDED PARTITION), 873 gigs
/dev/sda5 (logical for /home), 72 gigs
/dev/sda6 (logical for /var), 8 gigs
/dev/sda7 (logical for /boot), 0.11 gigs
/dev/sda8 (logical for /data), 784 gigs
/dev/sda9 (logical for swap), 8 gigs
As a side note, you can also you gparted to copy/paste entire partitions which makes keeping backup very easy. My /dev/sda3 is a periodic backup of my live Arch partition.

Acro Pro XI - boo. two license charges for dual-boot

Who do I contact to petition for change in Adobe Acro Pro license restrictions which demand double payment for me alone running one instance of Acro Pro at different times on a dual-boot Mac Book Pro, sometimes under Snow Leopard, and sometimes under Mountain Lion?? These two environments do not run at the same time. This is not a Parallels or VMWare question.
I rely on Acro Pro, it's critical. I need it, and don't want to pay twice for it or be committed to using Acro Pro in only one of these environments or the other, but not both. I switch back and forth between them frequently.
I may be one of the few people on the planet with both SL and ML on the same HDD on the same machine, cross-mounting my *one* home directory and /Applications from the newer ML installation back to SL. Even complex applications like XCode3 and XCode4, work just fine where the newer version doesn't run under the older operating system. Amazingly, most all other apps, excepting this issue with Acro Pro are Apple-copeceti, and just work.
When Acro Pro XI pops up under ML from it's SL installation, it finds the 'fingerprint' of the machine changed, complains, and exits.

A retail license for Acrobat XI Pro is good for 2 machines so there should not be any problem using it on you MAC unless you have tried activating on a 3rd computer else where.

Just thought I would relate the value of my dual boot MDD G4 at tax time. Turns out I needed some data on capital gains from my 2000 return. Checked the file and OMG, no printed copy of my return. Checked my second drive on my MDD G4 and found the Turbo Tax for Mac files for 2000. But, the program wouldn't open properly in Classic. So, I booted into OS 9 on that second drive, opened Turbo Tax and printed out all the forms I needed. Saved my butt last week as I was stressing out to finish my taxes by the weekend.
Since I've been doing my taxes on a Mac since the mid-90s, it will be nice to have those files and OS 9 available for some years to come. OS 9 forever!

Yep with older software and files, sometimes the only way is get boot OS 9.x proper.
Having a dual-boot Mac helped me out big time while facing a critical deadling. I needed document created off disc created in 9.x, yet the document appeared as a Unix executable. Basically, this oldie but goody explains my situation (although it also happens with HFS+ 9.x discs):
