Product recovery problems on Satellite Pro A200

Hi
I have a Satellite Pro A200. It is running very slowly and sometimes it freezes up when I log on.
Also the homepage has been hijacked and I have tried several anti spyware programs and they have not worked.
I have the product recovery disc but the problem the DVD rom drive has stopped working.
The light is on but it will not open unless I use the manual release.
I have removed it and checked the connections but it seems o.k.
The DVD/CD rom has disappeared from the device manager and does not show up under hardware.
I have tried system restore but this also will not work.
Is there anyway you can use the product recovery software if you boot from a USB key?
I have tried restarting the computer and choosing boot from CD but it will not give me that option.
I have looked in the bios and the only boot options that it gives are harddrive, CD rom, land and FDD

> Is there anyway you can use the product recovery software if you boot from a USB key?
No, this Toshiba Recovery disk cannot be copied to USB flash memory stick and used for OS installation. Im afraid this would not work.
But if youve got an Microsoft Windows CD you should be able to create an bootable USB flash memory stick. In internet you will find many useful step by step instructions how to create such bootable USB stick.
But booting from USB flash memory stick should be definitely possible since the BIOS supports following bootable devices:
USB FDD, HDD, ODD, Network(LAN), USB Memory

  • Re: Using Expert Recovery Mode in Product Recovery CD for Satellite Pro M70-220

I would greatly appreciate advice on the following.
My Sat Pro M70-220 (PSM75E-00D008G3), laptop has 4 partitions created by Acronis Disk Director Suit v9:
    C: OS-Win XP Pro SP3
    D: Programs
    E: Data& Downloads
    F: Backups
After booting the laptop into Win XP, I inserted the Toshiba Product Recovery CD into the DVD-RAM drive
and navigated to BMP folder, R:\G_INST\BMP, where I found the file "menu.bmp" which gives 2 Recovery
    options:
    *1. Recover entire Hard disk*
Warning . All stored data o your computer will be lost.
Factory pre-installed software will be installed.
    *2. Expert Recovery Mode Warning:*
This is for PC experts only.
Factory pre-installed Software can be installed onto an existing partition.
My questions are with respect to using the "Expert Recovery Mode" :
    - will I be able to use the "Expert Recovery Mode" of the Recovery CD to reinstall the Win XP Pro (factory pre-installed software) onto my C: partition, whilst not affecting the D, E & F partitions ?
    - will I be able to format the C: partition, using the "Expert Recovery Mode", without formatting the other partitions ?
    - what is the exact "Expert Recovery Mode" procedure ?
    - where can I find further info on the "Expert Recovery Mode" procedure ?
    Thank you
    AlanCB

    >will I be able to use the "Expert Recovery Mode" of the Recovery CD to reinstall the Win XP Pro (factory pre-installed software) onto my C: partition, whilst not affecting the D, E & F partitions
Yes, this should be possible. Using the Expert Recovery Mode you should get the Ghost window in which you could select the partition where the OS should be installed. In such case only this partition would be formatted.
    > will I be able to format the C: partition, using the "Expert Recovery Mode", without formatting the other partitions?
Yes, theoretically this should be possible.
    > what is the exact "Expert Recovery Mode" procedure ?
As I mentioned above, this mode allows you to restore the OS on a certain partition and only this partition will be formatted.
    > where can I find further info on the "Expert Recovery Mode" procedure ?
How about searching here in the forum?

  • Satellite Pro A200-16N: Can I use Recovery CD after upgrade to Vista

    Hii!
Im thinking of upgrading to windows vista on my Satellite Pro A200-16N, and i've ran the windows vista upgrade checker from the microsoft website and it says my system will support windows vista so im ok on that.
The problem is, if my laptop were to break or something like that at some point, will my recovery CD's that was supplied from toshiba still work on the laptop with windows vista?
Will they return the laptop to windows xp or since my laptop has a different operating system will they not work?
    Also...
    Whats the deal with BIOS?:S
    I dont understand!
If i were to upgrade to windows vista should i update my BIOS before or after upgrading to vista?
As i have to download the new drivers before upgrading yes?
    Thanks!

Of course the Recovery CD will work.
The Recovery CD will set always the notebook back to the factory settings. This means that the whole HDD will be formatted and the Toshiba image will be installed.
    > Whats the deal with BIOS? I dont understand!
    > If i were to upgrade to windows vista should i update my BIOS before or after upgrading to vista?
In my knowledge this notebook was already delivered with Vista therefore you dont need to update the BIOS if you want to install Vista again.
Some A200 Satellite series needs a BIOS update if you want to use the XP.
In such case its advisable to update the BIOS to XP version firstly and then to install X OS.

  • Satellite Pro A200: How to create Dual boot; Vista & XP using Recovery CD

I have just purchased a Satellite Pro A200 lap-top, which was supplied with Product Recovery disks for both Vista and XP.
The Vista licence specifically also licences XP.
Can I set up a dual boot so that I can boot to either Vista or XP ? If so, how?
I would also like, as a third boot, Red Hat Linux 9.
    Any comments ?

Hmmm. Usually its possible to use two or more operating systems on the computer but as far as I know the Toshiba Vista Recovery CD formats the whole HDD during the Vista installation and this will lead to losing of the installed OS's.
Im not 100% sure about the XP Recovery CD The newest CD called RECO doesnt include expert mode which allows choosing between different partitions.
So I presume every usage of the Recovery CD will format the HDD and will erase the installed data. But of course you could try to install both OS and to check if the XP recovery CD allows choosing second portion for the OS installation.
If it will not function it seems that you will need either an original Microsoft XP CD or the original Vista CD to use both OS.
    Best regards

  • [Satellite Pro A200] - slowness during data transfer and heat problems.

    Hi folks.
I have a 1.5 y.o Toshiba Satellite Pro A200 with standard 200GB HDD. Since some time its behaviour is just... weird.
Sometimes system slows. It just behaves sluggish, it frequently freezes for a second during simple tasks such as entering the text. It;s more frequent during intensive data transfers (such as copying files through FTP from my LAN or copying from pendrive) but sometimes it happens even when no other app than the Firefox is working. It's not that apparent, so I wonder - will service take it under warranty conditions (which means - is there a probability that they'll say that everything is perfect and charge me for this?)
The computer was on the warranty repair once, they replaced HDD with other one. Is it possible that the other one has some troubles as well (S.M.A.R.T. check discovers nothing). Or maybe it's faulty SATA controller?
Other thing is the temperature. During normal work (Internet, MS Word) both cores works at 60*C. When gaming the temperature can rise above 90*C and the computer sometimes shuts down. I assume that the problem is the dust accumulated inside the laptop but I can't see how can I clean it up.
Would you go to the service with such problems?

Virus scanners can slow a system down considerably, what Virus Scanner are you using?
If you have many programs installed, maybe its time to backup your data and reinstall Windows. I do it myself every year since Windows tends to get bloated and slow after a while.
As for the dust, you can blow it out using a Can of compressed Air sprayed through the main air vent (while the system is off).
Or if the dust buildup is really bad, you may need to send it to an Authorised Service Provider to get it dismantled and cleaned up.

  • XP via RIS installation on 32 Satellite Pro A200 laptops

    Hi,
Can anyone help? I'm trying to install 32 laptops (Satellite Pro A200) via Windows 2003 Server Remote Installation Services. I've got past the problems with network cards and now have these working by adding the drivers into a $OEM$, $1, Drivers, Nic folder and thought that it might be simple to use the same solution to install the drivers for the SATA controller. How wrong could I be! I'm now pulling my hair out. The machines have the drivers installed in the same way ($OEM$ etc) in a directory marked sata. I have used the drivers from Intel's site - extracted to floppy disk and copied from there. Every time I try to re-image I get the same error "Windows did not detect any hard disk drives" and it's driving me crazy! I have edited risstnrd.sif, textsetup.oem etc etc to no avail.
I found a link on Toshiba's German site for downloading drivers in this situation but the link is pretty slow I've tried to download those drivers now from three separate locations (3 different ADSL accounts) and each one starts off at about 36k per sec then dwindles down to bytes per second and then fails. (It's only a 21Mb file!)
Has anyone managed to deploy these laptops via RIS? If so can you please let me know how you did it and what drivers you used?
    Many thanks,

    Hello Mark
In my opinion RIS installation is pretty complicated theme and I am really skeptic someone will be able to help you. If you have some time try to use advanced search and check the results for RIS as searched term.
Other way you can create your own recovery DVD and use it for OS installation. For recovery procedure you need about 20 minutes.

    Hi
    >I tried to repair the Winsock using Microsofts articles with no luck
I assume you are meaning this MS knowledge base article:
[How to determine and to recover from Winsock2 corruption in Windows Server 2003, in Windows XP, and in Windows Vista|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259]
Well, I searched a little bit around and found out that the solution described on 811259 article doesnt help in all cases
So searched on 3rd party website and someone has suggested to try this advice.
    Its also from Microsoft:
*[How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in Windows XP|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357 ]*
So check it out maybe it helps
If not, then you might be forced to reinstall your OS because the repair option is not included in the Toshiba recovery CD ;(

  • Satellite Pro A200 - System won't start

    Hi,
was wondering if anyone could help?
My Satellite Pro A200 with windows XP won't start. It begins with the Toshiba screen.
Then goes to a black screen with text where it says "PXEE61 media test failure - check cable" (I have no cables) then says exiting PXErom; moves onto the next screen which lists options: safe mode; safe mode with networking; safe mode with communal prompt; Last known Good Configeration; start windows normally.
All of which have been tried and results in the windows loading page coming up for about 20 secs then it just gives up and tries the whole process all over again (before flashing a blue screen).
Nothing seems to work - have tried taking the battery out a number oftimes...and the power cable but to no avail.
This has happened before but after a few false starts gets going - however this time it just won't snap out of it. I could take it in to some where locally but i'd prefer not to as I'm living in Spain and need the laptop asap and not sure I want to leave it in some one else's hands at the risk of them wiping the hard drive.
I'd be so so grateful for any help asap and I'm afraid short hand tech may have to be explained.
    Many, many thanks.

    Hi
I think the problem is that the OS cannot be found on the HDD.
The PXEE61 media test failure - check cable appears mostly if the notebook tries to boot from the LAN.
Why the notebook tries to boot from the LAN?
    Well,
    - maybe the LAN option was chooses at first in the booting order in the BIOS
    - maybe the HDD is faulty and therefore the notebook tries to boot from LAN
    - maybe the MBR (master boot record) is faulty
I think you should take the Toshiba recovery CD and should format the HDD and should reinstall the OS.
    This should helps.
If not, then the HDD could malfunctions and should be replaced!

  • Re: Satellite Pro A200 - Screen goes black after BIOS screen

    Hi,
I'm new to the forum and have quite a big problem. So any help is welcome and appreciated.
My Satellite Pro A200 goes black after the BIOS screen and a black screen with a blinking cursor. Also just before the screen goes black a bleep can be heard which shows windows is booting.
I can access the toshiba set-up screen but not the safety mode set-up.
    Kind Regards

    Hello
You wrote that you can access the BIOS but have you checked if the HDD is recognized properly? Maybe the computer cannot boot because HDD isnt recognized so you should check this.
If the HDD is recognized I would try a recovery installation from Toshiba recovery disk. It seems that Windows isnt able to start and if you reinstall the whole system it should help to get rid of this. Just go in boot menu and select CD/DVD drive as boot device.
    Check this!!!

  • Satellite Pro A200-1MN correct sata contoller needed for xp install

    hi
i thought i had the correct file for my xp install on my floppy but the windows install still can't see my hard drive
i don't have the recovery media hence this problem
    Satellite Pro A200-1MN
    PSAE4E-01R00WEN
i have it as 82801 sata ahci controller and ich8m storage controller 2850
it doesn't seem to like them though, can anyone help?

Usually this option you can find in advanced BIOS options and you can choose between AHCI and compatibility. Option is SATA controller mode.
Anyway, it is better to install OS with AHCI mode and have full HDD performance.
Download storage manager and there you will find folder called F6flpy.
There you will find ICH8M_32bit folder with WXP sata driver.
When you start WXP installation use F6 button to load SATA driver. After doing this HDD will be recognized properly and you will be able to continue WXP installation.

  • Satellite Pro A200 - Fn keys does not work with Windows Vista

    Hello,
I own a Satellite Pro A200-PSAE7E and a retail license for Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit (with SP1) installed on it.
Before installing Vista, I upgraded the BIOS to the most recent version available on the Toshiba site ([http://it.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/vista_drivers.jsp?service=IT]).
BIOS version is now 2.20-WIN32 contained in this file: [http://support.toshiba-tro.de/tedd-files2/0/bios-20080404121735.zip]
After the successful installation of the operating system, I installed the "Value Added Package" ([http://support1.toshiba-tro.de/tedd-files2/0/vap-20080109135106.zip]) which contains the "Flash Cards Utility". In my understanding, the installation of the "Value Added Package" should enable the Fn keys usage.
This doesn't seem to be true or not completely true.
    Here is what happens.
    - Before the installation of the "Value Added Package" all the Fn keys didn't work.
    - After the installation of the "Value Added Package", if the TCrdMain.exe process is running, all the Fn keys don't work.
    - If I remove the TCrdMain.exe from the startup and I reboot the PC, only some Fn keys work (Fn+ESC, Fn+F1).
There is no way (or I didn't find a way) to make all the Fn keys working.
Does anybody know how to solve this problem?
    Thanx in advance,
    mme000

I do not know for sure but it can be because of SP1. I have installed Vista Ultimate on A200 and all listed stuff (drivers, tools and utilities) from Toshiba support page.
Does your installations Vista DVD contains SP1 or you have installed it on your own? If you install Vista Ultimate (without SP1) and all stuff from Toshiba support site following Installations Instructions order.

  • "Common module" missing for XP on Satellite Pro A200

    Hello everyone,
I received my Satellite Pro A200 (PSAE7) laptop with a Vista OS.
I have made a fresh & clean XP installation on it using the Toshiba's installation instructions document.
Everything is working fine except my Fn+F6 Fn+F7 Fn+F8 hotkeys for Wireless and screen brightness.
I have made a few search over the internet and I found that page :
Looks like that I need to setup "common module" installer in order to make work those hotkeys.
But the problem is that the "common module" is not available on the driver page for XP ....
If I change the OS type to Vista there is "Value Added Package" available but it's not compatible on XP ...
I tried to download and setup a "common module" for Sat Pro A120 model but i got an "TVALZ" error during the installation ....
Did Toshiba support forget to put online a "common module" installer for XP for Sat Pro A200 ??
    How can I make work my Fn+F6 Fn+F7 Fn+F8 hotkeys ?
Any help will be really appreciated !
    Thanks,
    Can

    Hello darkmatterman,
First of all thanks for you reply and for your tips about the Bios version (Vista vs XP).
The first day I received my laptop on Vista OS, I already made a Bios update "the Vista compatible one". So my Bios is v1.70 actually.
I will try monday morning to update the latest XP compatible Bios version which is v5.20...
Do you know if it's possible to apply the latest XP bios upgrade on a bios which was already been upgraded with a Vista compatible version ?
And if the XP comptabile Bios upgrade works, do you think that I will need to setup my fresh XP again (with all Toshiba drivers & utils setup order...) ?

  • Satellite Pro A200 PSAE4E - WLan speed regularly drops out

    Hi
Does anyone know what causes my laptop to lose wifi on a regular basis? It is a Satellite Pro A200 PSAE4E running on XP. I purchased the laptop new back in February and it came with Vista loaded but the wifi kept dropping out and was advise to swap to XP as it was more stable.
When the wifi drops, the Wirless Connection Icon disappears completely from the sys tray as though it never existed although the wifi light just under the front edge remains on. Looking in the network connection in the control panel the wifi is not listed.
I have to shut down the laptop and reboot so that I can carry on working online.
I've downloaded the latest driver for the Atheros AR5007EG and I rang Toshiba support.
Anyone got any ideas - I'm disappointed with the performance of the WLan.

Ive got the same model, and had the same issue with the Wireless Card today (otherwise its been fine for 4 months). I was confused by the card not appearing in the device manager - like it was totally wiped from the system. I rebooted a few times and it did still not appear.
Left the laptop and did something else for a while, and on rebooting the card reappeared and the Wireless connection was remade.
I also have the same question: What causes all trace of a device to disappear - rather than the card to be shown but with an exclaimation mark showing there was some sort of conflict which might help us to sort the cause of the problem.
Have you had any help from anywhere else?

  • Satellite Pro A200 (PSAE4): DVD drive permanently blinking

    Hello,
I have been using a Satellite Pro A200 (PSAE4) laptop for some time now without any major issues.
My dvd drive (tsst crop TS-L632H) is no longer working for a few days now... More precisely, its LED is permanently orange blinking. Drivers are up to date. The eject button doesn't work either. No disc is inserted. The drive seems fine in the Windows device manager...
If opened manually and if a disc is inserted in the drive, I can't see any data. Can't boot on the disc either.
I'm running under Vista 32bit SP1 with the latest bios available on the toshiba website (2.40).
Since I need to fix the frequently reported "black screen" issue before login prompt, using the windows installation disc
Any help would be really appreciated.
    Thanks !

    Hi
According to you page you are not able to boot from any CD or DVD, not even from the Toshiba Recovery CD.
    Am I right?
To be honest, Ive no idea why such issue happened but in my opinion its related to the hardware malfunction and only the replacement could helps
