Professional monitor a neccesity ? if so, what do you use ?

As a beginner , i've just learnt that what i see on my computer monitor is no indication of how it may look on a TV screen . If i wish to make a commercial quality DVD , i gather that a professional video monitor is neccesary .Have i understood correctly ?
What would be a least expensive monitor to do the job ?
When using such a monitor does it mean that the content shown would be the acceptable broadcast quality ?
Is it relatively simple to calibate these monitors ?
Does this ensure that the film will not appear over or underexposed when viewed on different TV sets and that the colours will be fairly as i see them on the monitor ?
Would such a monitor play the audio as well ?

Only if the video was exposed correctly, free from errors and post processing was made to broadcast spec. Bad video on a Grade 1 monitor is still bad video. A video monitor only tells part of the story, it must be used with a waveform monitor, a vectorscope, plenty of skill.

Many people confuse calibration with daily operational set up. The link to videouniversity uses the term 'properly adjusted video monitor' it does not explain calibration.
It is very difficult to calibrate a broadcast monitor. This is not a TV set, it is a precision piece of engineering. Calibration is performed by a trained broadcast engineer using specialist test and measurement equipment with a lot of skill. If the monitor displays cross curves or the drive is set wrong, no amount of adjusting brightness will magically calibrate the monitor.
*Daily operational set up* is relatively easy - it uses test signals such as colour bars to adjust the video, gain and saturation of the picture.

If it is the wrong exposure which is a camera issue, you can't get good pictures, some post processing can help a lot to improve bad images but they will not be the quality they should be.
Every TV will be adjusted differently by each user and will look good, bad or awful as appropriate.
The idea of monitoring is to get the best picture you can with the signal you have and what it looks like when you perform post processing ie changing levels or colour correction, it is not to degrade the picture quality so it can fall in line with domestic equipment.
Would such a monitor play the audio as well ?
- you must use separate professional sound monitoring, a powered speaker or separate amplifier and speakers. Some portable pro colour monitors do have cheep and nasty inbuilt sound cards, but this is strictly for temporary sound tests, not for professional sound monitoring.

That's definitely strange, kzmidge. I want a working phone in your hands though. I noticed you mentioned you received the suggestion to complete a reset. Did you already do that? Is it working again? Are you receiving an error message?
If you hesitated a little longer to complete the reset, you can try to place your phone into Safe Mode http://vz.to/rxg0ii and see if you can access mobile sites from your browser. This mode will stop 3rd party applications from running, so you won't be able to use the apps you mentioned but we may be able to narrow down the trouble in Safe Mode. What are you using as a Flash replacement for 64-bit machines?

I was reading about the vulnerabilities in Adobe's Flash and decided to remove the offending package. I opened Chromium to make sure my Flash still worked, as I understood that Chromium implemented another method for rendering Flash stuff. I was wrong. For example, YouTube tells me that I need Flash 10 or higher. I tried to re-install the flashplugin package, but it is no longer in the repos.
I can live without Flash content, but it's nice to have.
So the question is, what are you using instead, that can be installed from the main repos?

I have installed both lightspark 0.4.3 and gnash 0.8.8, since lightspark should be able to 'fall back to gnash for older videos' (see changelog of lightspark).
I have tried some flash-websites in firefox and all of them seem to use gnash and there was 1 website that didn't load the content (www.deredactie.be - our national tvstation). So, I'm under the impression that lightspark is not used by firefox.
Has anyone found out how to do this?
Secondly, gnash should be able to use VA-API (hardware acceleration). Is it just a question to install libva and let gnash do the rest, or does one have to recompile gnash to build the support in?

Hi. Do you mind if I ask you what do you use to write your programs in Java? I am a student and we are using NetBeans IDE 3.6. I know it is a bit old but the tutor says we must stick to that one. What is best for writing Java programs?

Do you think those things will make things easier or is it more complex?If you're learning on your own, you'd better use something more up to date (most probably better interface, childhood bugs fixed, and better support on the Internet).
If you're in a classroom, or a training room, you'd better use what the instructor tells, or at least what other students/trainees use. Easier to get help and share tips if everyone has the same setup.

Nicolas, Have you been able to get the Adobe Update to work? I get stopped at the first step, putting in the command-line to install the AUS2.0. I think we have a support Contract, i should probably just ask Adobe for assistance.
Does noboby create their own distributable packages? Maybe i'm looking at this wrong.
I see that even Microsoft puts their updates into a .pkg file that is pushable through ARD. Maybe most everyone else does?
I was able to get an Adobe Flash Player Distributable installer, from Adobe, you have to fill out a form asking for permission for the distributable installer, and they send you a link to the files.. ugh. but fine. I have the .pkg installer for Flash, and that works pushing out over ARD.

I did create the Adobe Package distribution for actually installing the CS6 over ARD. That works.
I have a licensing glitch on deploying new machine off a build that has CS6 on it. I'm able to get around the licensing glitch by using the Adobe Serialization tool, that's fine.
I guess i'm just looking for a CS6 Updates tool. I'm fine creating a CS6 updater package using InstallEase or something. I'm wondering what the best one is.

Documents managment: what do you use?

I've been trying to find a good document manager to organise the mess I have in articles, lecture notes, books, etc, mostly in pdf format. So I need a tool like Referencer (http://icculus.org/referencer/) or gPapers (http://gpapers.org/) that could help me with that. Lamentably, both of them have a large list of dependencies, like hal and some gnome stuff, I would like to avoid. So I wander if any of you knows about some other, less bloated, tool to do the job.
Maybe one of you have made a nice little script to retrieve BibTeX citations plus a database, or something along those lines.
So, what do you use to organise your bibliography?

I am asking for help. Despite the title, this wasn't meant to be a poll, and for sure not about document readers, but I get where the confusion arises.
So far it seems mendeley is the closest thing to what I'm looking for, it looks fairly complete. But I dislike 2 things, it being closed source and the need to create an account to use the full featured program. I think I will use it though, at least while I find a replacement or make some time to write a script to retrieve the bibtex citations from internet.
I won't mark the thread as solved in case someone else knows about a good way to manage bibliographic material.

What do you use to listen to streams / podcasts / last.fm ?

I'm looking for a way to manage my stream, podcast and last.fm music listening, preferably through a single ncurses or a GTK based interface. I'm still using BMPx which is a buggy, no longer maintained resource hog but has some features that I really like such as:
- uncluttered intuitive interface
- Last.fm tag cloud, similar artists, album art, quickly look up artist info on the web
- easy way for searching and filtering shoutcast and icecast streams

I use smartphone LG Spirit 4G for Netflix and Spotify on the go with Sennheiser CX2.00G earphones. Great sound, really stunning bass and vocals on these. Pleased everytime to hear every detail outside home no matter music or series/movies. 4.7" screen.
At home I will try to use for music Pioneer SMA1 again, as finally I can remote it with new phone without problems. Cheap phone was freezing on app all the time. For series/movies I have Philips 42PFL5008T 42" Smart-TV. I remote Netflix and YouTube app now using my phone - as it never freezes now. Old was unable to remote well, as it was cheap.
On laptop I do everything else. Since laptop is Ubuntu, Netflix will not work and Spotify app is no-needed and hard to install, web player low quality. Laptop is for forums, surfing, blogging etc.

I don't use anything to speed up FCP X on your MBP.
Seriously we need statistical info on why you think it needs speeding up.
Poor performance is often associated with incorrect usage, lots of other apps open or a hard drive that is more than 75% full or fragmented.
Ideally all the media should be stored on an external hard drive and not the MBP's.

What do you use to monitoring the IDs and Alerts?

I have installed a 4250 and built out some custom signatures got the email working from VMS 2.2 for some of high priority alerts. This all great but I was wondering what other people use to monitor the alerts and how they get notifications. I see what I have as being very limited in scope and there are a number of parts in VMS that just do not work.
Do you use other console products? I have seen a couple of applications advertised that say they aggregate alerts from the pix, ids and mcaffee. Just wondering if or what others use. I only have one ids but I do have other items pix, mcaffee.

I wish I could but I can't offer up anything that won't come at a cost.
The original poster in this thread alluded to solutions capable of looking at disperate data in one console. Thats a Security Information Management System (SIMS), pure and simple. Cisco sells one, as do many other vendors. The unfortunate thing is that there is no inexpensive SIMS solution out there that offers multi-product monitoring. They all come at a significant price point.
Since you both have a single sensor, I agree that VMS Basic is more than you need. The hiccups with it far outweigh the benefits. IEV might be "uncomfortable" to use but it works. In my experience (in a single-sensor monitoring environment), using IEV for monitoring and IDM for configuration management is the easiest, if not the most eloquent, solution.
If you want fancy visualization or reporting, you're going to have to be willing to plunk down some cash to buy it. With a single IDS sensor, it's just not economically viable IMHO.
