Professional Opinion Please
Hello all,
I'm not sure if it's okay for me to post this or not, but I know there are a lot of video professionals here.
My question is related to what would be an appropriate fee to charge for video editing for a new client. (a ballpark figure)
The job involves the editing of a broadcast TV show, the length is 00;23;30;00. It would involve capturing, video and audio editing, and color correction with a final output to DV tape. It is pretty basic editing, not many special effects, with a few Motion clips.
I would estimate it would take roughly between 20-25 hours to complete this job.
Would someone please be able to give a ballpark figure of what would be appropriate to charge for a job like this?
Thanks in advance,
Oliver Williams
Depends totally on your market, your skill level and reputation.
20 to 25 hours in not a realistic time estimate, that's only 2+ working days. Your client is going to want to look at alternate takes and probably make changes. You're going to run into some interesting problems you never thought of.
Best off with an hourly rate. You can guesstimate the time necessary, but for gosh sakes don't tell him 25 hours. Figure out an hourly fee that pays you, pays for your gear and expendables and on top of that makes you some extra money. What's the point if you don't make some money?

Your professional opinion, please!
I'm looking to purchase software to remove (non-copyrighted) projects from DVDs. I've read through the archives and seen recommendations for DVDxDV and Cinematize. For those of you that have used both, which do you prefer and why?
THANKS!

Greetings! First off my MSI mobo with the I7 proc having the specs below is fine and only getting better with age. My MO with the PC is everyday stuff with the occasional digitizing of video thrown in. The I7 and hyper threading is just awesome! For the life of the PC I have been shutting the power completely off at night and letting it S3 sleep during the day. I have all the peripheral’s power hooked into one power strip and turn everything off with one switch save for the wireless router. The router stays on 24/7 for other PCs in the house. I run Trend Micro’s Titanium Internet Security as my firewall with the router WEP encrypted. Over the past couple of years the Trend Micro software has reported a couple of attempted break ins to my wireless network, but I would almost bet it’s the neighbors fooling around and not a real break in. Anyway . . … for longevities sake do you think I should just let the PC continue to S3 sleep 24/7 and never shut it off, or continue to power it completely off at night. One thing to note is that when the system is sleeping and there is a power failure, or spike it takes a long time to “resume windows”. In fact it can be cold booted twice in the time it takes to “resume windows”. So what do you think turn it off at night, or S3 sleep 24/7? Oh . . … when you chime in please don’t just give an opinion without revealing why you feel that way. Thanks!
I second to Jack's suggestion of using Hibernation.
I have been running Hibernation mode on my PCs and Laptops without any need to change any background options. Works great, especially on my laptops and resuming back to Windows from my PC is a breeze. -
I am learning asc3 and loving it. I just ran into a problem
as i tried to do a tutorial recently of where cards flip over and
load random card design on them.
i constantly get this error. if someone can please verify my
work and opinion and tell me where i made the mistake. I dont
believe its in the code but the placement of the graphics but i
need confirmation on it and also on where the error is:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of
a null object reference.
at Card/settype()
at Memory/CardLoader()
at Memory()
PLEASE GO HERE TO GET ATTACHMENT OF MY FILES THAT I DID:
http://www.actionscript.org/forums/showthread.php3?t=190078
Thank youThe error message answers that for you... it tells you when
your code isn't working. Hopefully you'll remember that particular
error message from here on out because it is common and always
means the same thing.
So if you go back to kGlad's original reply, the problem was
identified there--in more translatable form. He would definitely
have pinpointed the problem had you described how the Card was
configured--I consider him a true expert (not myself... I learn
thru the postings of others in these forums--lots of opportunities
that my own work doesn't present).
It is always helpful when people provide not only the code
they use, but also the details of the how the pieces involved are
assembled. Fair warning though... if you end up showing a mile of
code you're less likely to get any help. Many of us that try to
help prefer to have things narrowed down and to see that someone
has actually done something to try to resolve matters ahead of
posting. People that simply say "this isn't working" or "how do I
design this", which is common, are likely to get a replies in the
vain of "what have you tried" or "learn how." Try spending a few
days helping people out here and you'll probably come to understand
why. -

KT6V LSR (MS 7021) SATA controller card second opinion, please
I want to thank Fredrik Asenius for his reply to my previous post.
However, due to the fact that the purchase of a SATA controller card and two SATA2 hard disks will be handled, of necessity, at a distance of 800 kilometers (involving courier expenses), the technician of the store has requested that I ask for a second opinion from another expert in the forum. An error, therefore, could be very costly. (No offense of any kind intended to Fredrik Asenius)
My motherboard is the MSI KT6V LSR (MS 7021) Via KT600 Northbridge and Via 8237 Southbridge chipsets.
Both SATA connections are currently taken up by two SATA hard drives (no striping, nor mirroring in use). The rest of the installation consists of IDE CDRW and DVDRW drives, as well as an MSI Nvidia NX6200AX (256 RAM) AGP video card and a Soundblaster Live Value PCI audio card. The other four PCI slots are not occupied. The system also has 1.5 gigabytes of RAM and a 520-watt PSU. I am running Windows XP SP2 Professional.
My questions are the following:
(1) Since the two SATA connectors on my motherboard are occupied, if I wish to add another SATA device I will have to install a SATA controller card. Does the SATA controller card have to be SATA 1 or can I also use a SATA 2 controller card?
IMPORTANTLY, the technician questions whether the motherboard will accept a controller card adding more SATA devices. He says that you cannot add any more SATA devices to this motherboard. Is he correct?
(2) If it is possible to add more SATA devices using a controller card, since the chipset on the motherboard is Via the SATA controller software is also from Via. Does the SATA controller card also have to be one that uses the Via SATA RAID software? (In other words, are there compatibility issues? Can all this all work together?)
Once again, thanks for the help.Quote from: bjmcm on 14-December-06, 04:40:05

Once again, thanks for the help.
I have had a fair amount of experience with this kind of issue.
1. No, the add in card does not need to be SATA I, it can be SATA II. I recommend a SATA II card and SATA II drives. Putting SATA II drives on a SATA I controller can fail to work.
2. Is he wrong? Essentially, yes he is wrong. It depends on how literally you take his words. You can NOT add more SATA drives to the motherboard. You CAN add an add-in SATA card and then put the additional SATA drives on that new add-in card. The difference in wording the answer is critical.
You ask about the Via chipset on the motherboard and also on the add-in card. Actually, it is probably LESS likely that the add-in card will work if the chipsets are the same. The issue is the computer being able to differentiate between the two controllers. I had this very problem with a machine.
That computer had two add-in cards. Each was the same brand. The computer could not differentiate between the two cards and gave a hardware error. I replaced one of the cards with another brand and it works fine. The manufacturer suggested trying the cards in different PCI slots. I did not try that, I just got a new card because it was easier for me.
The add-in card does NOT need to support RAID, that is optional. If you do not want to use RAID, the card does not have to support it. If you do want to use RAID, obviously the card does need to support it. RAID is part hardware and part software so if the card supports it and you do not to set it up as RAID, that is fine.
One caution...If the add-in card has an external port that you want to use, be aware that there is something called e-SATA that might use an incompatable type of port connecter. I had a card with that connecter and I found that the cables are extremely expensive and also hard to find. Most external SATA connectors are the SATA I style that you are used to though. -
Packaging and distribution of EJBs - your opinion, please
Hello everyone,
I am working on an EJB-based commercial product. When done, it will be deployable on a number of application servers that use different XML descriptor files, with different content. Initially, these will be JBoss, WebLogic and Sun ONE AS v8.
I am pondering two different ways of distributing the product:
1. with a wizard-like GUI-based utility that will format the required XML files based on the user's input, build the EAR file from the preexisting components + the newly formatted XML files, and deploy the resulting archive in the server's application directory, or
2. hand over the component JAR and WAR files, with some skeleton XML descriptors, and tell the user to make their own, server-specific XML files, then assemble the EAR and deploy it manually.
While the approach (1) is obviously user-friendly, and would be voted for by the majority of users, I wonder how this is done by other vendors offering their EJB products. Also, it is entirely possible that I am missing some other (better? hybrid?) approaches.
Your opinion on this matter is highly appreciated.

Design and professional opinion
I am looking for some professional opinions on how to go about setting up secure connectivity to multiple remote sites. I figured going to the professional forum is probably the best place to go to see what everyone thinks.
Here are the requirements.
1. 400 to 500 remote sites (some larger and some quite small)
2. Must be secure, AES-256 or above FIPS compliant
3. Needs to be Hub-Spoke type connection. All spokes need to come back to Headquarters for information.
4. Need to be able to manage the connection by way of some sort of NPM
5. Call center will need restricted abilities in order to troubleshoot in off-hours(for instance if Lan2Lan, call center can't have full ASA admin access)
6. Traffic would need to be initiated from both remote and HQ side, bidirectional.
7. Remote site networks are managed by their separate agency. We can place equipment there, to have them route to,
These are the most important requirements I can think of at this moment. Most likely, there will be some sort of broadband type connection to each remote site as we are trying to go away from costly dedicated slower circuits from the Telco.
We have toyed with putting an ASA 5505 at each remote site and creating lan2lan tunnels back to HQ. Problem with this is, our call center would require full access to the ASA to reset tunnels. In addition, monitoring lan2lan tunnels with an NPM has come to be quite a chore and to the best of my knowledge, there's no real great way to do this without finding an IP of something else to ping.
I am looking forward to hearing your personal opinions as to what the best option would be regarding something of this nature. Again, this is an enterprise type setup and will need something that works and works well. You guys are super smart and I know you will steer me in the right direction. Thank you for your help and time in offering your solutions.You could use DMVPN or probably a better solution would be to use MPLS and DMVPN and create a tiered design (e.g. sites->regions->corporate). There are a million factors with a design and your applications that we can only give you ideas. You can work with your local PSE to come up with a good design.

In the "The Xylophone Project IV - Core Architecture " thread Dr Damien wrote
The last project I started with new code was in prerelease 8.0. It had the distinction of being the first shipping large application ever designed with the LabVIEW project and LabVOOP. But wait, you say, LabVOOP did not ship until 8.20. Correct. I had to re-engineer with libraries. It was then I found out that most use of prefixes was unnecessary. In fact, the separate namespacing nature of libraries/objects greatly simplifies the creation of plug-in architectures. So, long-winded answer to a short question, I think that prefix namespacing should go the way of 8.3 filenames. [emphesis added]
after Ray Farmer posted
I am reading 'Clean Code' - Robert C Martin at the moment and in there it suggest that any prefix to names is not required these days, but I was wondering if its still essential with LabVIEW but as Ben points out maybe its not.
Well of course I am brining this topic up since I think it is a standard that should be dropped.
Please voice your thoughts on this topic and if we can come to some agreement, we'll re-write the LabVIEW Style guide.

Ben Rayner
I am currently active on.. MainStream Preppers
Rayner's Ridge is under constructionI spent a little time with this taking the one main project and converting directories to libraries and whatnot. I do see a problem with this approach: sublibraries. I started with my "Utilities" directory. Within there I had a bunch of folder for each category: "Array", "Numeric", "File", etc. So I created a library for each subgroup: "Array.lvlib", etc. I then created a "Utilities" library and placed each individual sublibrary in that and saved all of that. Now, after I close everything and open, say, "Array.lvlib" it automatically opens "Utilities.lvlib" with everything loaded. Worse: let's say I just need the Array library and I copy that over to another computer. If I open Array.lvlib on the other machine everything seems OK. But, if I open one of the subVIs it has a broken arrow because "Utilities.lvlib" is missing.
I know this is all by design, but in my book this makes it quite restrictive, and for the moment I'm going to stick with prefixes since I can copy over the "Array" directory and not have a bunch of broken VIs. Too bad, though.
ADDENDUM: Yes, I know I can "Disconnect from Library", but this is extra work that would be required for each library that I decide I need on the other computer.

Upgrade on the cheep opinion please
Which would give me more boost, adding a cpu card that will bring me up to dual 1.8 ghz, or addition of a mac mini as a node? I simply cant afford a new MacPro for a while. Or should I just save the $600 toward my new cpu later. Thanx
The CPU speed is hardly ever a factor, and you have to make it significantly faster to notice any difference anyway. I don't the a Mac Mini would help much either, so I would save your money until you can buy a new system.
Why not look for a refurbished Mac Pro or a used one on Ebay? You might also see what you might get on Ebay for your current system, and then factor that into the price of new gear. -
Need setup input/opinion please.
Im setting up a new panasonic 50 HDTV and was thinking of getting the new Mac Mini.
I want to be able to go out to the HD TV and play DVDs and also my home mad HD QT files. Also wanted to surf the web.... Is all this possible. Does it just work as if the TV is a monitor.
Also can I connect HDMI for high res? I know the DVD wont be HD but for my QT files I would like to max out the resolution to the TV.
Also can I hook my mini into my Bose sorround sound?
Thanks for your time.Yes, you can certainly use your TV as the display for your Mac mini. There are quite a few people, including me, doing the same thing. It's not going to be the best for surfing the Web, but it should work. My Mac mini is connected with an HDMI to DVI cable. DVDs actually look better, for me, this way than playing them on my dedicated DVD player connected with s-video.
What kinds of audio input does your Bose system have? If it has a digital optical audio input, then it should work just fine even for surround sound from your DVDs. (Although, there's another discussion about getting multi-channel audio from QuickTime files directly with no solution yet.)

Date string import. Need professional opinion,
Hi all,
First of all let me say I have exhausted my options to figure
this out. I thought I would ask for some opinions here.
I have been ask to import some data from a dat file into our
CF server that has a Date/Time string that I am not familiar with.
Has anyone ever seen this format or worked with it and have any
idea how I can decipher it. Here is an example.
DTSTART:1175254200
DTEND:1175270400
This is what I know of the date/time above.
The DTSTART:1175254200 is March 30, 2007 7:30AM
I generated this myself is how I know.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,

what you're describing is java epoch offset, unix uses
*seconds* which is what
this data appears to be.
this is fairly simple to handle:
<cfscript>
startEpoch=createdate(1970,1,1); // like it says
unixEpochOffset=1175254200; // seconds since epoch start
x=dateAdd("s",unixEpochOffset,startEpoch);
writeoutput(x);
