Profile Manager - iOS device limit?

Has anyone found any information from Apple (or elsewhere) on approximately how many iOS devices Profile Manager can support?

I would try demoting your Open Directory server from Master to Standalone in the Server Admin app - there's an assistant in Server Admin > Open Directory > Settings > General > click the change button.
Once it's demoted to a standalone, restart.
From there, don't create an OD Master again - go to Profile Manager in Server.app and run through the wizard again.  In the process, it will create an OD Master for you.
Hope that helps,
Chris

  • Payload Variables in Profile Manager (iOS)

    Hi There!
I successfully installed a Lion Server with Profile Manager and am able to manage iOS devices.
Now I tried to setup E-Mail Profiles/Payloads. To test the variable functionality I added a Webclip to a php-script that simply displays me the content of the variables:
    http://www.bartest.ch/ingeno/ingeno.php?EMail=%email%&shortname=%short_name%&Ser ialNumber=%SerialNumber%
which shows me the correct email, serial number and shortname. but these are the only variables that work. nothing else like first_name or full_name or whatever. Full Name would be important when generating the Mail Configuration.
In the Directory Admin Utility I see there is a First and Lastname set. How can I debug this? Is it a bug (feature?) that the variable names change with the language of the installed Server OS? I installed it in German. Tried German %Vorname% and %vorname% but no success.
    Any ideas here?
    Cheers

Lion Server 10.7.4 on latest MacMini Server

I'll assume NAT is in use here.
Are your iOS devices using the same DHCP server, same network, same DNS server, and the same settings as your OS X systems?  Do you have references to any other DNS servers in use here, or are all your systems using only your own local DNS server, with no references to other ISP or Google or off-network DNS servers?
Do your iOS devices have the necessary certificates loaded?   (Loading the certificates first, then the entitlements, is typical.)
Using .local is not something you want to tangle with here.
I'm going to assume you're obfuscating your domain here, as it's not likely you're using the (real and registered) domain "mydomain.net" here.   I'll also assume your local DNS is not using .local or .arpa as the domain name.  (If you're obfuscating, please consider using example.com, example.org or example.net, as these are reserved for this and similar uses.)

  • Is it possible to enroll multiple profile in IOS device,

I like to enroll multiple profile in IOS device to manage iPad, is it possible to enroll

Oh, sorry, when you said you were using Mac Mail, I made an incorrect assumption. The mail program you're using on a computer has no bearing on this.
Are you using a POP3 account? Or an IMAP account? They are fairly different. If you're using a POP3 account with no ability to set filters on the server, no there's not much you can do. If it's IMAP, are you sure your provider doesn't offer any web interface?
Another option would be to set up another email account just for news letters and so forth. That way, you could just look at that account when you wanted to see the news letters buy your "regular" account would have a much less cluttered inbox.

  • Profile manager enrolled device names

I have been playing around with profile manger on 10.7.3 enrolling and iPhone and a couple of iPads.
The iPhone enrolls correctly and the name in the devices tab shows the device name "xxx's iphone" and I can see the information about the device including encryption, apps installed etc.
Both iPads appear to enroll correctly however instead of showing "xxx's iPad" they show the device name of "New Device".  I even tried pre-enrolling the device using the serial number and UUID and gave the device a meaningful name, however when then enrolling the device it accepts the enrollment and promptly chnages the name from the meaningful name back to "New Device".
I have tried this on both and iPad 2 and iPAd 3 running the latest IOS.
I also notice that the jobs that communicate with the device to collect the device informantion never complete, where they do for the iPhone.
I am sure this was working before the IOS 5.1 update.

  • ISE profile / posture IOS device

is there a way to profile or posture an IOS device as to wheather or not it has been rooted?
our Corporate policy would like to say that if rooted, you get zero access.
    Thanks

No - future MDM integration that Cisco is working on should be able to bring is type of information to ISE. Cisco have indicated MDM integration is coming in Q4 2012.

  • How to deploy settings in Profile Manager through Device Groups

When I go to the Profile Manager web page and create a device group and configure the payload settings it doesn't seem to send the profile settings to the Mac devices that are in the group. How do I go about getting this to work so when I get a new device that is enrolled all I have to do is throw it in the group so it will automatically push out the correct payload settings that I configured?

What you're asking should work.  You should be able to create a Device Group and adjust the setting for that group.  Then when you add a device to that group, the settings will be pushed to the device automatically.  So, it leaves me with a few questions for you:
Why don't you think it sends the payload?  When you look under "Activity" do you see tasks in the "Active" area or in the "Completed" area... or something else?
What are you trying to change?  Setting up email accounts on iPhones will appear right away, but there are other changes (especially on computers) that don't take affect until it restarts (or the user at least logs out and back in).
Are you sure you have devices in your device group?  Sorry, probably a really silly question, but under your device group, do you see the devices under the "Members" section?
Are your devices "trusting" your server?  Did you add the trust profile to the device when you enrolled it?
Sorry I can't be more help... but I can tell you that you can do what you are asking.  We have it set up in our office, and it works really well.  We just add the new device to the device group and it does the rest.

  • Profile manager settings device management disabled error when enabling

    Hello,
I have installed OS-X Lion on a mac mini. Everything is working fine, including open ldap as a master where other imac can connect and use this ldap server for login.
However in profile management i try in the settings section to enable management of devices. When the wizard starts it asks me to enter the password for diradmin as this server needs a master ldap (is already there).
The wizard then mentions that this computer already has a master ldap server and i cannot continue installing device management in profile manager.
Probably because of this I cannot see devices in the profile manager portal.
Does anyone have a solution to solve this issue.
    Thanks

  • Profile Manager on Devices on a Different Network

    Hello,
I currently have profile manager setup and working on 266 iPads. After I set them all up, 66 of those iPads moved to a temporary location accross the street. They are using a different network then my server. (different line, gateway, firewall ect).
My question is, is there any way I can push out apps / update profiles to those 66 iPads? I do not want to change any settingso on the iPads if possible. Please let me know any suggestions you guys have.
    I have a mac mini server 10.8.5
    iPads are running 7.0.2
Profile mangager works completely fine on the devices in the network.

I to am having this issue. My Mac mini server is hosted in a datacenter off-network from my other devices. Currently, the only way to grab updates is to VPN into the server to have them pull down to the client machines. I run a mix of MacBook Pros, iPhones and desktop Macs.
A solution on this would be extremely helpful, as I do not want the end users to have to VPN in to pull an update from the Profile Manager all the time.

  • Managing iOS device software

Trying to preserve iOS 7.1.2 using custom version via Cofigurator and I keep getting this error message:
"Failed to copy preflight options during recovery mode restore."  Error: 3194
We have over 30 iPad carts and need to move iPads from cart to cart as class sizes change and we don't want to update to iOS 8 mid year since it's a very lengthy process not to mention just got everyone updated to 7.1.2 over the summer.

    Hi,
Can you open a service request so our team can assist?  The behavior should show a remote task showing up in the remote task section and then executing fairly fast on the device (remote lock can happen as fast as 10-20 seconds.)

  • Device management - Profile Manager - MDM

Device management with mac os x lion server:
I saw that with profile manager (an apple implantation of its mobiledevice management apis) allow you to enroll and manage iOS devices. I want to know if this OS with profile manager MDM can work for managing 20 ipads with MAC MINI. What hardware do you recommend to buy? MAC MINI or MAC PRO? I think mac pro will be better but I need to reduce costs so I choose MAC MINI but I want to know if it will work fine to manage our 20/22 ipads.
any advice about mac mini for managing 20/22 ipads? docuemntation/info about this?
    Thank you very much
    Regards,

We manage 500 iPads. But mdm is quite slow. When you start, you wait up to 5 minutes until devicemanager is online.

  • Can os x server Profile Manager updates iOS os and appl installation?

I've currently use Apple configurator to push profiles, update OS and app deployment to our College ipads. Have been told to use os x server to deploy instead. After upgraded the macbook air to mountain lion and install os x server, i'm kinda wondering does the profile manager in os x server is only for pushing out profiles and assigning users to the ipads etc? Do i still need to use apple configurator to do all the updates and appl installed first then use profile manager to push profile?
We've got quite alot of ipads need setting up and we normal use a ipad case where one usb cable connect to the laptop and charging case to deploy our apps.

Need to manage 500 Enterprise iPads
    Requirements;
    1) Trackable via Find my iOS device  (we have 500 iPads and with the 100 device limit per iCloud account for Find my iOS device limit we have 5+ iCloud accounts).
    2) Individually named iPads for locating and sending commands to wipe, lost mode, etc.. on map per Find my iOS device (we uniquely name them in Apple Configurator either by using the "sequensetially numbering feature", or by creating individual back ups (yes, 450) with the name specified in the image).
    3) Find my iOS device feature enabled in base Prepared or Supervised image (using one of our 5+ iCloud accounts) (image can be created during prepared stage, or in supervised stage) - tried both and have the same issue - which I am getting to...
    4) VPP codes for paid apps (all VPP codes purchased with generic account which is the Apple Admin account for VPP purchases). Apple Configurator is set up under a different/ unique Apple account (i.e. not VPP admin account) and not logged into iTunes for any purchases/ services).
    Issue: Can not do any following senarios;
    A)
         1) configure master iOS 7 iPad with iCloud account with Find my iOS feature enabled in Prepare stage (added during preparing stage)
         2) configure master iOS 7 iPad with iCloud account with Find my iOS feature enabled in Supervised stage (added after supervising, and then backing up that supervised and iOS Find my iOS device enabled)
    B) 1) Apply master image to any Supervised iPad (under senario step A) or senario step B)), including the (Supervised or/ Prepared iPad that was used to create the maset iOS 7 image
Result = fail with Apple generic code "4" ; This is obviously due to Find my iOS device feature enabled during image capture.
According to Apple (see Apple Config. Help) the 'Activation lock' (new feature in iOS 7) will not be enabled on a supervised device when an iCloud account with "Find my iDevice" is enabled. Their "help files" seem to imply after the device is Supervised, and a person (presumably and end user) adds thier own iCloud account with Find my iOS device enabled the activation lock is not enabled and erasing/ reconfiguring with Apple Configurator will not cause reimaging probhlems such as requiring the end user's credentials to reconfigure the device using Apple Configurator (i.e. you won't need the end user's credentials).
Needed: To be able to configure Supervised iPads with iCloud account (Enterprised owned iCloud account) configured on the basse image, which has Find my iOS device enabled, and to be able to apply that base image to all Enterprise iPads without generic apple error code 4 issue.

    Hi all
I am trying to replicate these steps in my environment but I am having trouble getting an iCloud backup restored to a supervised device. Can someone clarify the steps? The parts I am unsure on are:
    1) Do you Prepare in Configurator with all the institution owned apps? Or do you install them after restoring the iCloud backup?
    2) After entering the personal AppleID to restore the iCloud backup, the setup wizard prompts for the Institution/Configurator AppleID, there is an option to 'Skip Now'. Do you enter in the password for the institution account? or do you skip that step?
    3) What exactly is on the screen in the 'mini setup assistant' after the restore when you Refresh with Configurator?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • How to Resolve Bitnami/MAMP Conflict with Profile Manager

I've been working on a new Lion Server for several weeks, and most of my services work great. However, I want to set up several development environments for WP, Drupal, and Magento, among other things. I prefer to use something like MAMP Pro or, in this case, Bitnami stacks for my various environments. However, this machine currently is used for managing Wiki, Profile Manager, and Device Manager, among other things. Of course, if you activate the Bitnami MAMPstack, that poses an issue for Profile Manager, as both use the 80 and 443 ports, I presume. So, the question is how can I configure Lion Server to run Bitnami (or MAMP Pro, as an alternate possibility) and not break Profile Manager, Wiki, Device Manager, etc.?

Let me edit the statement a bit. Device Manager is the term that I intuitively have attached to the link https://server/mydevices, which is nothing more than a web interface for adding profiles to your Mac and iOS devices. Apple doesn't call it that, but I have taken to doing so, so when I'm referring to it, that's what it is.
Anyway, I haven't tried Wiki on its own, but I know that if I activate MAMP, or BitNami, and I run Profile Manager, it is inaccessible. Obviously, there is a conf setup, or something I am missing here, but I'm not finding it in the server documentation, if it exists at all.

  • HT5302 Which are in/outbound connections for Lion's Profile Manager?

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5302 lists the ports, protocols, and services used by MacOS Lion Server's Profile Manager.  But to set-up firewalls, I need to know from where the connections are initiated?  And to where do each go?  Obviously 80/443 is coming from web devices on the Internet to the Server.  I'm guessing 5223, the persistent connection to Apple Push Notification service, is outbound to Apple (somewhere w/in the entire 17.0.0.0/8 address block).  But what about the rest (2195, 2196, 5223, and 1640)?
    For 3.14 bonus points,
         1) Must Profile Manager use all these PPS to manage iOS devices?  Can we not use 80 and only allow 443?
         2) Are there any risk assesments or vulnerability reports available for 2195, 2196, 5223, and 1640?
    Thanks
    Kevin

    Hi.
To Backup will use only the following
    sudo /Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/usr/bin/pg_dump -h "/Library/Server/PostgreSQL For Server Services/Socket" --format=c --compress=9 --blobs --username=_devicemgr --file=/tmp/device_management.pgdump device_management
    what it does is:
execute a dump on the database you select, in this case we use the device_management database (the database of Profile Manager), use the socket on the path especified, the username of the database is _devicemgr and the file we want to create from this dump.
If you want to backup Wiki you will have to change the username and the database to colab (both of them)
If you want to run this on Mavericks you will have to change the socket and database name because apple changed a lot on the servers database.
To restore you have to use the following
sudo serveradmin stop devicemgr (stop the devicemgr service)
sudo serveradmin start postgres_server (start postgres service)
    sudo ./dropdb -h "/Library/Server/PostgreSQL For Server Services/Socket" -U _devicemgr device_management (delete device management database)
    sudo ./createdb -h "/Library/Server/PostgreSQL For Server Services/Socket" -U _devicemgr device_management (create the database again)
    sudo -u _postgres ./pg_restore -h "/Library/Server/PostgreSQL For Server Services/Socket" -d device_management -U _devicemgr -n public --single-transaction /tmp/device_management.pgdump (fill the database with the information on the backup file)
sudo serveradmin start devicemgr (restart the devicemgr service)
    Hope it helped.
    Regards.
