Profile size is over filled by sync/backup process

HI - how do I configure itunes so that I can select where the have the Sync/backup files created. Right now as I sync my ipod touch back up and sync information is placed in Documents and Settings subfolders within my profile. With other applications I can configure this process to be within My DOcuments which does not count to the profile size. I can configure where the music folders are but not the update/sync/backup folders - can anyone point me in the right direction please ?
Chris

I have moved from a G5 Powermac to an Intel Mac Pro and selectively porting over items from a backup hard drive.
How can I access and use documents and drawings created on the PC based computer ?

Clarisworks, you need Appleworks, which will only work with Mac OS X10.6.8 or earlier.  See this tip if you must go newer.  Mac Pros with newer hardware configuration than July 20, 2011 can't use Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier without this tip and then it would be Mac OS X Server.  I'm not sure if the new black Mac Pro supports that configuration or not.
iPhoto, there is an iPhoto for all versions of Mac OS X.
iTunes, there is an iTunes for all versions of Mac OS X.  Note with iTunes versions 11 and later, which are needed for syncing with iOS 7 or or later, you will lose coverflow, if you liked that feature.  Sadly you can't run an older version of iTunes from within Mac OS X 10.9 or later.
Sketchup: http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/60107 shows the versions that will work with intermediate Mac OS X versions, and this shows the latest version: http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/36208 be sure to click on the operating system you choose to use.
GIF - Viewing GIFs Apple's Preview can do that.  Editing them, I like http://www.lemkesoft.com/ Graphicconverter.
DMG is able to be opened by all versions of Mac OS X.  This are just "disk images" which store programs on a virtual disk that will open when double clicked.    Frequently you'll find the installer of the said program inside.  To find out if the program itself is compatible with 10.7 through 10.9, see http://www.roaringapps.com/
    Otherwise see the resources on:

If you end up deciding to stick with Snow Leopard.

  • Manual Backup vs Sync Backup

    Hi,
Just a little question, I've had to do a manual backup recently and it took quite a very long time to complete. I've noticed that the backup that occurs before syncing the iPhone (4S ios 8.1 in my case) with Itunes (last version) doesn't take that long, and I would like to know why.
    - Does it just update the last 'sync' backup with new files ?
    - Is it as reliable as a manual backup ?
    - does it takes the same size in my computer ?
    Thanks,
    Matt.
    iPhone 4S, iOS 8.1.2

Look under Edit > Preferences > Devices. There is normally only one backup for each device. If/when you restore a backup to a device the current version of it is used for the restore, the backup set is archived with the date of the restore, and a new rolling backup for that device is created. Whether you refresh the backup manually or via the first sync of the day, the overall size of the backup won't vary much unless you have added lots of new data to the device that would be included. Note that if your device normally backs up to iCloud then it is only backed up to your computer if you instigate a backup manually.

sync backup has been runing for over 20 min now. never happened before last iTunes update prior to 08/16/11.  have 25gb freespace. don't understand WHY and what is source of problem and how to resolve.

  • IPhone4 - Possible Sync/Backup Solution at last...

Since upgrading to iTunes 10.7 I've been unable to sync/backup my iPhone 4 via either USB or WiFi.
I've had  ALL the different messages over the months - "Can't start a session", can't sync, can't backup, etc.
I've followed all the advice from the forums - I've reinstalled iTunes, I've shut restarted the AppleMobileDeviceHelper services, I've restored my iPhone from backup, I've Reset Network Connections, I've deleted my backups on my PC and sync history in iTunes, but NOTHING works. (Sometimes it solves the problem for a short time, but then it returns).
iTunes 11 hasn't fixed the problem, but I THINK I've found a temporary solution - I can finally get my phone to sync again via USB if I turn WiFi *OFF* first.
(Ridiculous, but is it possible the sync/backup software sees the USB as a power source and tries syncing by USB & WiFi at the same time?)
Hope this helps someone else in the same position...
    CR

Mine has been backing up for 3 hours now.  I stopped it after about an hour the first time, thinking something was wrong.  This is ridiculous.  I have never had a backup/upgrade take this long.  I also find it somewhat odd that no one has replied to this post with similar problems.  Are we the only 2, out of millions, that are having this problem?

Someone else's Notes appearing on my iPhone. I'm using version 5.0.1. I assume there is some type of over-the-air sync problem happening?

Doing a restore will more than likely resolve the problem. Plug the phone into iTunes, select your phone under DEVICES, and press Restore. This will restore your phone to factory settings. Now, after the restore is complete, you have two options:
    1) Restore from Backup
This will let you restore all of the content you had on your phone but may also restore the other person's notes and their ability to sync notes to your phone.
    2) Set Up as New iPhone
Your data will not be restored, but you can always sync content back later as long as it is in iTunes. On the positive side, this would positively remove any setting that would allow someone else's notes to appear on your phone.
You will be presented with these two options after the restore. I recommend restoring from a backup first so you won't lose your data, but if it doesn't solve the problem, proceed to restore as a new phone.

  • What is mobile sync backup?

What does Library/Application Support/Mobile Sync/Backup do for me? Mine takes over 8Gb and has files dating back to 2011. Is it safe to delete these? I have no idea why I need them.
Any help appreciated as I try and slim down my MBP.
    James

These backups are from your mobile devices.
You can delete those backups to free up storage space.
But make sure that you sync your mobile devices soon after deleting those backups to create a new backup for your devices.

  • I am trying to sync/backup an iphone 4S.....

I am trying to sync/backup an iphone 4S i've never plugged into my computer before.
The only options it gives me is "set up a new iphone" or "backup from 'my iphone'"
Why can't I choose to backup this different iphone?
If I select "set up a new iphone' will it erase the data that's currently on the phone?

Just to understand what you are trying to do...
You want to save the content on the phone?
So you need to choose backup this iPhone to the computer.   It will not over write a backup of a different phone.
    OR
Are you trying to erase the phone and setup as a new phone?
    OR
    What?

  • Filled Time Capsule Backups

I have filled a Time Capsule back up, added another terabyte and now that is almost full. If I buy a 4tb can I move the other ones over to that one?

Do you really need all the old backups going back many months, if not years?
If not, erase the Time Capsule drive and start over with Time Machine backups there.  You will still likely have a 6-12 month backup history or more on the other hard drive.
When the Time Capsule starts to fill up, erase the other drive and then continue backing up there.  In other words, rotate the drives, so you will always have at least a 6-12 month backup history at any given time.
Few users ever need to go back more than a month or two to pick up a document that might have been deleted by mistake. And, if you buy a new Mac, and want to transfer data over from your old Mac to the new Mac to make the new Mac look just like your old Mac, the setup software will only go as far back as the most recent Time Machine backup when you set up the new Mac using Setup Assistant.
Sure, it is possible to transfer the old backups onto a 4 TB drive, but this is usually not worth the time and effort required to do this....and.....Time Machine will start over again with a new complete back up of your Mac again anyway, taking up quite a bit of space right off the bat with that and the other backups that you have moved over.

  • Does having a passcode lock prevent a normal sync/backup?

My wife has an iPhone 3GS, which we upgraded to iOS5 and then iOS 5.0.1.  This morning, when I was doing the upgrade to iOS 5.0.1, iTunes said it could not continue with the backup until the passcode was entered.  I entered the passcode, and everything proceeded normally, but since I don't have the passcode lock feature enabled on my phone, I had no idea this was happening.
So here's the question...does an enabled passcode lock impede a normal sync/backup?  There does not seem to be a way to grant iTunes unrestricted access when the phone is locked.  Is she supposed to disable the passcode lock every time she plugs the phone in at night to allow a normal sync over WiFi or when she syncs directly to the computer?

As long as you sync on the same computer, you do not have to enter the passcode. You had to enter it because you updated the software, normal syncing on the same computer does not require such.

  • HT1766 I want to restore my iPhone to the backup I did just before upgrading to iOS6. Today's sync/backup erased most of my contacts and almost all of my phone numbers within the remaining contacts.  No iCloud backup because of other issues still to resol

I want to restore my iPhone to the backup that I did just before upgrading to iOS6.  When I try to pull up old backups, I only see one from this morning and an old one from May 2012 when I still had my iPhone 3GS.  I have not been using iCloud since it was set up improperly when I first switched to the 4S, the contacts weren't being synced AT ALL.  visited the genius bar, they said I need a whole other appointment to visit them and solve that, I haven't had a chance to do that yet.  Thus, I am backing up to iTunes.
This morning's sync/backup resulted in me losing most of my contacts, and for the contacts that remain, 99% of the phone numbers are gone.  I can recover my calendar entries from this past week, but I don't know how I can recover all of them from my May 2012 backup.
Since I had a backup just last week, I'd like to just go back to it.  But how?  Or, is there another way to get my contacts restored?  And why did they disappear?  And what else may be gone that I just don't know about yet?

  • Is There a Way to Force a SYNC/BACKUP of the IPHONE

Hi All. Thanks again for the help on the logo stuck issue. Is there a way to force a sync/backup of the phone so if another restore is necessary the backup is recent and can recover the phone? Thanks all.

This is close to the problem I'm having. My husband let someone at work "update" his program and the goober deleted everything. I can only get a screen that has itunes logo and a usb cable picture. When I try to sync it Itunes doesn't bring up the phone on the left side. It doesn't recognize it at all. Can someone please tell me what I need to do? I've already tried reinstalling itunes, I've tried to sync on another computer and all I get is that itunes screen on my phone.

  • How can I turn off over the air sync settings on my Mac iPhone

    Hi,
For some reason I am attempting to sync my iPhone with my laptop as usual but now in the iTunes app when I attach my iPhone and go to Info, it reads: Your contacts are being synced with your iPhone over the air from MobileMe. Over the air sync settings can be changed on your iPhone. So here is the thing, I have looked online and have found nothing at all to show me how to do this on my iPhone. I want to be able to add info on my iPhone and then connect it with my laptop and sync it immediately with my laptop and also to add info on my laptop and immediately sync it with my iPhone. Please help. Thanks

On your iPhone go to Settings - Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Then select your MobileMe account. Turn off the items you don't want synced over the air.
