Answer: color plus contrast/value - BUT only when camera is not doing "intelli-contrast" type stuff, which Lightroom won't automatically mimic.
In other words, if you turn on Nikon's ADL or Canon's ALO, then jpeg is closer, contrast-wise to:
* Camera Matching Profile
* +exposure -highlights +shadows
than it is to camera matching profile alone, in Lightroom.
Which is why if you only select the camera matching profile and everything else is zero, sometimes you'll still have an image which is dimmer and/or contrastier in Lightroom.

CCP colour profiles and different lenses

Hi,
I just got a Nikon D7000 and I've been playing around with my ColourChecker Passport to set up some standard colour profiles for use in ACR as a general starting point for processing. I've been pondering if it's worth my while to create different profiles for each lens I have, something I've not previously done when profiling my old D60, where I just created a series of profiles (including some dual-illuminants) by using one lens and capturing the target under a variety of different lighting conditions (e.g. tungsten, flash, sunshine, etc).
Anyway, I just tried creating a profile for my 105mm 2.8 lens under tungsten lighting, having previously (yesterday) created one under the same lighting with my 50mm 1.4 lens and I've been comparing them in ACR using the colour dropper. I’ve opened up the images used to create the profiles, applied the profile generated using the ColourChecker software for the corresponding lens, and then set the white balance using the ‘off-white’ colour patch with the eye dropper WB tool. I then used the colour dropper on the same colour patches in each image. I’ve noticed that the RGB colour values aren’t matching quite as well as I’d expected (note that I thought it potentially unrealistic to get a perfect match): blues and greens seem to be roughly the same, so for example with patch #3 (third from left on the top row), one is at 69,72,115 and one at 70,77,115, but reds and oranges seem to be a bit further out of sync, e.g. with patch #15, one is at 99,45,29 and one at 109,51,34; with patch #16 one is at 166,167,29 and one at 175,179,33. This surprises me a little, as I thought the idea of CC was to calibrate the profiles so that colours were essentially the same across different lenses – and different cameras if applicable. I have to say though that, colour values aside, when eyeballing the two images on my monitor (profiled) they do look very similar, which I guess is the main thing!
I wonder if perhaps I’m missing something here? I’m quite prepared to be told that I’ve got this all wrong!
Also, I wonder if others on the forum using CCP have gone to the trouble of creating lens-specific profiles, or if they’ve just created profiles for their camera body using one lens? This is the approach I took with my D60, but having done more reading on CCP I know that some folk do advise to create separate profiles for each lens they use (and I am of course aware that the CCP user manual also states to do this). Do you even create a profile for each and every shoot (when possible)?
I’d be very interested to hear your opinions on this as I’ve not been using CCP for all that long and am always eager to learn more.

First of all, a color profile is for correcting color, not luminance, so compare the HSL or Lab coordinates not the RGB values so you can just ignore the L coordinate. From your given RGB numbers, you can already tell that one of the images is brighter than the other so it is just confusing looking at the RGB values and guessing what you would expect the three values to be in the other image. For comparing two images, I would concentrate on the Hue number in HSL coordinates, since Saturation can change with contrast, and Luminance can change with Exposure and Contrast.
Also, as part of your eyedroppering comparison, another thing to do would be adjust the "Exposure" of the darker image until the L number (in HSL or Lab) is the same as the L in the brighter image and then see what the other two numbers are--maybe the other two numbers won't change, and then you can try putting one of the HSL values in the "Old" patch of the color-picker and the other in the "New" patch and see how much different they look. You'll have to do this comparison in Photoshop not ACR so use ProPhotoRGB when you export to keep the colors as close to the same as you can.
The two questions you seem to have, are: does using a lens-specific profile make enough difference to real world situations to bother with, and where are the variations I'm seeing when the profiles are applied to their source images coming from since I would think they would be the same.
For testing whether the profiles computed for the two lenses make a noticeable difference even with your two profiles that don't appear to correct the same, apply the two profiles to the SAME CC image (one of the two you created your profiles with), save an sRGB JPG of each, and see if you can tell the difference, either side-by-side, or even better, when you flip back and forth in some sort of photo viewer--like with Windows Picture Viewer when those are the only two images in the folder. By apply the two profiles to the same image you have mitigated any luminance and white-balance differences in the source image and are merely looking for differences in the effect of the two profiles.
If you can't tell much difference between the same image using each of the two profiles then it's just an academic exercise. I like academic exercises, but am also a perfectionist and lazy so I would do the experimenting until I found out I'd perfected things enough that I can't tell any difference then I can stop. In other words, do I need to profile for various lenses or not, or am I just doing it because I like to control everything as much as possible and it really doesn't make any difference.
Before answering the other question, about where any profile variations might be coming from, understand that the combination of white-balance and color-profile is attempting to convert the colors of an object photographed in the lighting scenario the profile was created for into the colors of the object photographed in a standard lighting scenario. In my mind the works out to be "make the colors of the object look like it was photographed in sunlight". The issue that requires making a profile and not just white-balancing, is that any part of the object that was colored the same as the light color will be neutral when the white-balance is done, and more generally the closer the color of the object is to the color of the light, the more neutral it will become when WB is done. For example, if you have a red ball and a gray ball and photograph them in red light, they will both look gray when white-balanced. A real-world example of this would be flesh-tones in incandescent light, when white-balanced will have even less color and be more neutral or pale or even bluish, than the skin photographed in sunlight, so after white-balancing, the job of an incandescent profile is to boost the reddish colors and diminish the bluish colors so the skin looks like it would in sunlight. This might be an argument for NOT WBing skin in incandescent lighting. In severely-colored lighting, especially nearly monochromatic lighting such as sodium vapor lighting, correcting the colors to be as if in sunlight will be impossible, but to the extent the lighting isn't monochromatic, the colors can be made to look more normal, if not perfectly normal..
To understand whether the differences you're seeing in the profiles are due to the lenses being different color or due to variations in the profiling process, itself, think about where the variations could come from and how you might test for each:
Was the source lighting exactly the same color between the two shots with different lenses (that were taken a day apart)? Test by eyedroppering the WB of same neutral-color patch in each photo and see if there is any difference in the Temp/Tint numbers. You cannot test the source-lighting color unless you have shot with the SAME lens for both days, so if you don't have shots with the same lens, seeing that the WB is not much different between the two shots can give you some comfort that the difference in the profile was not a difference in the source lighting. The source lighting might have changed if there was some daylight mixing in on one day and not the next, or if the A/C was running on one day and not the other and the voltage was slightly different and the redness of the light was different. One other thing that can wreak havoc in repeatability of both color and exposure is if any of the lighting is fluorescent CFL or tubes, because that sort of gas lighting changes intensity as the voltage varies and reverses 60-times per second and this variation is especially noticeable if the shutter is fast. So while your lighting may have been incandescent any changing daylight or flickering fluorescent lighting mixed in might have changed the source-lighting color enough to make a variation in the profile more than the color of the lenses might have.
This first question dealt with the photos taken with each of the two lenses. The remaining questions are about testing with just one lens.
Is the profiling process repeatable? Test by creating two different profiles from the SAME CC photo and be a little sloppy about when marking the corner patches, and see if you get different numbers applying those two profiles. An idea where things might not be repeatable, is that there are slightly variations in the color of the color patches (you should be able to move the eyedropper across the color patch and see if the RGB numbers change) due to slight color noise and depending on where you put the "corner" markers on the CC image, you'll get slightly different results.
Does the exposure make any difference? You can determine this by taking a photograph using the SAME lens in the SAME lighting (a few seconds apart), and just varying the exposure by 1/2 or 2/3 of a stop, and then computing a profile for each exposure and apply those two profiles to one of the exposures and see if the non-L coordinates of HSL or Lab eyedroppered.
If you check all these variations you'll have an idea of how much each affects the profile and then can judge if the magnitude of the differences you're seeing are related to variations with creating the profile, or actually related to differences in the lenses and thus a new profile for each lens might be warranted, assuming you can tell the difference, still. I mean even if you can tell the difference between the profiles created with different lenses, are the differences from the lens significantly more than the differences due to exposure or lighting color or corner-patch placement?
I haven't tried computing a profile for each lens; however, I have created a dual-illuminant profile (2700K and 6500K) and then computed new color-matrix slider values (the ones under where you set the profile) for various lighting conditions using Tindemans' script and despite the slider values being not close to zero, I can hardly tell any difference on the few images I've looked at. Once exception to not having the color-matrix sliders make much difference is when using the dual-illuminant profile with fluorescent lighting, which has a significant Tint value compared to either of the standard illuminants, but in the case of fluorescent lighting, I'd rather compute a whole new profile, than use a slider-corrected dual-illuminant profile.
Besides eyedroppering Lab or HSL coordinates in Photoshop, another way to check for color variations is to create a color-error plot in the Color Check module of Imatest and see how far the squares and circles are off from each other for each color-patch. An example of such a color-error plot is linked below, where it shows how far off the colors of a color-checker are in incandescent lighting after computing a color-profile in incandescent lighting. You'd expect them to be completely correct, but they aren't, and is a lesson in color profiles only being to go part way in making the colors look as if they were photographed in sunlight:

ACR 5.2 camera profiles and Nikon D700 color artifacts

Using LR 2.2 or Photoshop CS4, conversions of D700 NEFs often result in peculiar color 'artifacts' (posterization?) in certain images, when using the new camera specific profiles like Camera Standard (or particularly Camera Landscape). Typically, the Adobe Standard or ACR 5.2 profile don't exhibit this behavior, at least not with significant changes to saturation and contrast.

1. You may be happy if the problem goes away with the lossless compression, but it would be a nice service to the D3/D700 owners' community to

this. There are many photogs convinced, that the lossy compression does not cause visible loss (Nikon created a myth about this issue already with the D70).
If you can create pairs of shots demonstrating the effect and would not mind my using your images, I would spread this on other forums as well, as I did with the D300.

Even the snow is clearly reddish in the ACR created JPEG. You may complain about ACR's WB conversion, but that is a separate issue. In order to compare the colors, first the greys have to be made grey in both conversions.

Q: Custom camera profiles and process 2010 - incompatible?

I have two digital cameras that I've had modified to shoot in the infrared. I have to use custom camera profiles (created with the DNG profile editor) when I import IR images, otherwise the custom white balance is not preserved correctly. However, even though the Develop module shows that the process is 2010 for my IR images, the Detail and Contrast sliders under Noise Reduction are grayed out.
I read somewhere on the web that custom camera profiles used on import effectively negate the ability to use the new features in process 2010 - can anyone confirm this, or otherwise explain why I'm not able to use the Noise Reduction features of process 2010 in their entirety?

Camera Raw brightness and contrast preset for art capture?

I'm capturing oil paintings for reproduction with a D3x tethered to Lightroom 3. I'm converting though in camera raw. My camera profile is created using Color Checker Passport software/target which uses a DNG file. Given that, the profile is build without brightness or contrast adjustments. My question is, for accurate color, tone and exposure capture should the default ACR presets for brightness and contrast be reset to 0?

Brigthness and contrast sliders disappears

Hello ..
I just downloaded the latest camera RAW plugin for PS CS 5 version 6.7.0.339. Using windows 7 and PS 64 bit.
But when I open a raw file from Canon 5D MKIII and select the profile 2012 in camera calibration the brightness and contrast sliders disappears.
Then I am getting an exclamation mark in the right corner of the image with the option to update to current profile 2010, is this right?? If I choose to update to 2010 the brightness and contrast comes back.

Correct, PV 2012 has changed the sliders and their function. Contrast is still in PV 2012 but Brightness is not. It's function is now covered by Exposure wich in PV 2012 is a hybred of the old Exposure lus Brightness. However, in ACR 6.7, you can't actually get to the controls of PV 2012. Those will be in ACR 7 that ships with Photoshop CS6 (next week). ACR 6.7 added "rendering" support of PV 2012 for compatibility with Lightroom 4. ACR 6.7will need to be set to PV 2010 to make image adjustments...

Adjusting screen brightness and contrast on Satellite L550-113

I am a visually impaired user and I'm thinking of purchasing the Satellite L550-113, but before I do that I need to be sure that the screen brightness/contrast can be adjusted very easily, preferably via hardware controls as opposed to via the control panel. I also need to be sure that one can make the screen quite dull (i.e. too dull for a non-disabled user).
Could anyone give advice on how to adjust the screen contrast and brightness on the Toshiba L550-113? Also, does the screen have a glossy or matt finish?
Any general information on the quality and ease of use of the screen will be extremely useful and highly appreciated! Thank you.

Hi mate!
Yes, the screen brightness can easily adjust via FN keys. You have to press FN+F7 to increase the screen brightness and FN+F6 to reduce the screen brightness. Furthermore in Vista power management you can also adjust the screen brightness and save the settings for different power profiles and on batter or on power mode.
As far as I know Satellite L550 has a gloss finish screen as other Satellite notebooks.

Problem with Cisco IPMA - between the manager profile and assistant profile

The problem basically is that wen I do a call (internal o external) to the extension configured in the manager phone, the assistant phone dosen`t rings or take the call, even the call in progress dosen`t appears in the Cisco Unified Communications Manager Assistant Console of the Assistant
Also the icons of the IPMA in the manager phone dosen`t appears.
I have check the following:
1.The configurations on both profile and its look ok
2.I have restar the Cisco IPMA, CTI and Tomcat Service
3.I have reconfigured the profiles
What else I can do
What is the most common cause in these cases

Our Customer have about 50 IPMA and there are work. The problem is only with 4 IPMA Assistance (always the same). Sometimes (few times in week) lost Assistance icon Managers, and Managers doesn’t see shared lines, Intercom, services IPMA on phone doesn’t work. But sometimes Assistant icon is showing but Manager don’t see active connection and can’t call via Intercom.

ODI Data Profiling and Data Quality

Hi experts,
Searching about ODI features for data profiling and data quality I found (I think) many ... extensions? for the product, that confuse me. Cause I think there are at least three diferents ways to do data profiling and data quality:
In first place, I found that ODI has out of the box features for data profiling and data quality, but, acording to the paper, this features are too limited.
The second way I found was the product Oracle Data Profiling and Oracle Data Quality for Oracle Data Integrator 11gR1 (11.1.1.3.0) that is in the download page of ODI. Acording to the page, this product extends the existing inline Data Quality and Data profiling features of ODI.
Finally, the third way is Oracle Enterprise Data Quality that is another product that can be integrated to ODI.
I dont know if I understood good my alternatives. But, in fact, I need a general explanation of what ODI offer to do Data Quality and Data profiling. Can you help me to understand this?

Hi after 11.1.1.3 version of ODI release, oracle no longer supports ODP/ODQ which is a trillium software product and this not owned by oracle. Oracle is recommending the usage OEDQ for quality purposes. It's better if you could spend time on OEDQ rather than trying to learn and implement ODP/ODQ in ODI

- Click on Metabases
- in the Metabases window, right-click on the white area and select Add...
- go through the wizard to create your metabase

How to use Device Profiles and Viewing Conditions Profile in Photoshop Elements 11?

In trying to get to grips with the Colour management aspects of PSE11, I have encountered the following problems:
Having selected "Display" a sequence of clicks (Change display settings -> Advanced settings -> Colour Management -> Colour Management tab -> Colour Management)
gives a screen which includes the headings:
Device Profile and Viewing Conditions Profile.
1. Device Profile. Besides sRGB and ARGB, the profile list includes the profiles for all of the Epson papers. (I have an Epson Stylus Photo PX810FW).
I changed the Profile to an Epson Grayscale, this was accepted within the menu, but there are no changes from normal when I viewed the image on the Windows screen or within
PSE11. ("normal" is sRGB or ARGB).
I thought it worth a try to test that, if I wanted the display image to closely represent what I would get on a particular Epson paper, this may be a way to do it.(I suspected this approach because I have never
seen it in the literature!).
So what is the purpose of all of the paper Profiles appearing in the Display listing?
2. The Viewing Conditions Profile has also several options. I have tried to find the criteria for choosing one rather than the other, but failed to find any information. Can anyone help? I seek general guidance

As a seperate question:
Selecting Image on the PSE11 menu across the top of the displayed image, and then Convert Colour Profile, I tried this process on an image, converting tiff to sRGB. When saved there was an extra asterisk in the saved title but in this case,
the file was still labelled tiff and there was no change in the number of Mbs. If a conversion has taken place, how is one to know? Does saving a tiff file as jpeg change its colour profile? When is it useful to use this feature?

Addressing your second question, you are confusing two different things.
tiff is an image file format, as is jpeg, as is psd, as is png, as are dozens (if not hundreds, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_file_formats) of other formats.
A colour profile represents the colour characteristics of devices so that, for example, displays know how to display the colours, printers know how to print them.
Image files MAY, but do not have to, contain colour profiles.

The Ultimate Guide to Resolving Profile and Device Manager Issues

The following article also applies to issues after re-setting the severs' hostname. It also applies to situations where re-setting the Code Signing Certifictateas described by Apple has not resolved the issue.

I have been plagued with Profile Manager and Device Manager issues since day one.
I would like to share my experience and to suggest a way how to resolve issues such as device cannot be enrolled or Code Signing Certificate not accepted.
I shall try to be as brief as possible, just giving an overview of the steps that resolved my issues. The individual steps have been described elsewhere in this forum. For users who have purchased commercial SSL certs the following may not apply.
In my view many of these issues are caused by missing or faulty certificates. So let us first touch on the very complex matter of certificates.
Certificates come in many flavours such as CA (Certificate Authority), Code Signing Certificate, S/MIME and Server Identification.
(Mountain?) Lion Server creates a so-called Intermediate CA certificate (IntermediateCA_hostname_1") and Server Identification Certificate ("hostname") when it installs first. This is critical for the operation of many server functionalities, including Open Direcory. These certs together with the private/public keys can be found in your Keychain. Profile and Device Manager may need a Code Signing Certificate.
The most straightforward way to resolve the Profile Manaher issues is in my view to reset the server created certicates.
The bad news is that this procedure involves quite a few steps and at least 2 hours of your precious time because it means creating a fresh Direcory Master.
I hope that I have not forgotten to mention an important step. Readers' comments and addenda are welcome.
I shall outline a sensible strategy:
1. Clone your dysfunctional server to an external harddrive (SuperDuper does a reliable job)
2. Start the server fom the clone and shut down ALL services.
3. It may be sensible to set up a root user access.
4. Back-up all user data such as addess book, calendar and other data that you *may* need to set up your server.
5. Open Workgroup Manager and export all user and workgroup accounts to the drive that you using to re-build your server (it may cause problems if you back-up to an external drive).
6. Just in case you may also want to back-up the Profile Manager database and erase user profiles:
In Terminal (this applies to Lion Server - paths may be diferent in Mountain Lion !)
Backup: sudo pg_dump -U _postgres -c device_management > $HOME/device_management.sql
Erase database:
sudo /usr/share/devicemgr/backend/wipeDB.sh
7. Note your Directory (diradmin) password for later if you want to re-use it.
8. Open Open Server Admin and demote OD Master to Standalone Directory.
9. In Terminal delete the old Certificate Authority
sudo rm -R /var/root/Library/Application\ Support/Certificate\ Authority/
This step is crucial because else re-building you OD Master will fail.
9. Go back to Server Admin and promote the Standalone Directory to OD Master. You may want to use the same hostname.
10. When the OD Master is ready click on Overview and check that the LDAP and Keberos Realm reflect your server's hostname.
11. Go back to Workgroup Manager and re-import users and groups.
NOTE: passwords are not being exported. I do not know how to salvage user passwords. (Maybe passwords can be recovered by re-mporting an OD archive - comments welcome! ).
12. Go to Server App and reset passwords and (not to forget) user homefolder locations, in particular if you want to login from a network account!
If the home directory has not been defined you cannot login from a network account.
13. You may now want to restore Profile Manager user profiles in Terminal. Issue the following commands:
sudo serveradmin stop devicemgr
sudo serveradmin start postgres
sudo psql -U _postgres -d device_management -f $HOME/device_management.sql
sudo serveradmin start devicemgr
14. You can now switch back on your services, including Profile Manager.
In Profile Manager you may have to configure Device Management. This creates a correct Code Signng Certicate.
15. Check the certificate settings in Server App -> Hadware -> Settings-> SSL Certificates.
16. Check that Apple Push Notifications are set.(you easily check if they are working later)
17. You may want to re-boot OS Server from the clone now.
18. After re-boot open Server App and check that your server is running well.
19. Delete all profiles in System Preferences -> Profiles.
19. Login to Profile Manager. You should have all users and profiles back. In my experience devices have to be re-enrolled before profiles can be pushed and/or devices be enrolled. You may just as well delete the displayed devices now.
20. Grab one of your (portable) Macs that you want to enrol and go to (yourhostname)/mydevices and install the server's trust profile. The profile's name should read "Trust Profile for...) and underneath in green font "Verified".
21. Re-enrol that device. At this stage keep your finger's crossed and take a deep breath.
22. If the device has been successfully enrolled you may at last want to test if pushing profiles really works. Login to Profile Manager as admin, select the newly enrolled device. Check that Automatic Push is enabled (-> Profile -> General). Create a harmless management profile such as defining the dock's position on the target machine. (Do not forget to click SAVE at the end - this is easily missed here). If all is well Profile Manager will display an active task (sending) and the dock's position on the target will have changed in a few seconds if you are on a LAN (Note: If sending seems to take forever: check on the server machine and/or on your router that the proper ports are open and that incoming data is not intercepted by Little Snitch or similar software).
Note: if you intend to enrol an Apple iPhone you may first need to install the proper Apple Configuration software.

1. In Action profiles, logon to system and recheck correcion are available in action definition as well in condition configuration and the schedule condition is also maintained. but the display is not coming(i.e in the worklist this action is not getting displayed).
You can check the schedule condition for the action and match the status values...or try recreating the action with schedule condition again....for customer specific ....copy the standard aciton with ur zname and make a schedule condition and check the same.
2, In suppport team of incident when i give individual processor it throwing a warning that u r not the processor. but when i give org unit it is working perfectly. Could anyone guide on this.
You need to have the empolyee role for BP ..goto BP and got here dropdown for ur bp and choose role Employee and then enter ur userid
also make sure that u have the message processing role
