Profiles and Vista

Sometime ago I read an article that indicated that the Vista process of displaying security warnings would actually blow away the profile in the video card LUT.
If this is indeed the case does the same happen when you activate the Aero function which causes the desktop to fade?

  • Color Profile and ACR 4.6 (Vista)

    Hi,
My monitor is calibrated with Spyder3. I have set up my Photoshop CS3 so that the color management policies are disabled and the proof conditions are set up to the .icc profile produces by the calibrator. With these settings the files that I save in Photoshop look similar in Photoshop, Microsoft Office Picture Manager, IE and on paper.
But if I decide to open a RAW file, then it is opened in ACR and looks very different: all colors are over-saturated and totally unnatural. Nevertheless, clicking on "Save Image" without changing anything produces a jpeg, which, if opened in Photoshop, looks fine.
I played with this jpeg in Photoshop and was able to reproduce those unnatural colors of ACR in the following way:
    - Go to Save For Web&Devices
    - Open the Preview Menu
    - Chose Windows Color
Normally I have Uncompensated Color chosen there and then it looks normal.
Here are the examples. First, how the file looks in ACR ad then in PS:
Does anybody know why this might happen?
    Thank you very much,
    Vera

    Thank you Ramon,
Could you please elaborate? I have looked through the page you gave me a link to. I did not see much new there.
The problem I have is with proofing. If I switch to sRGB I have consistent colors through all my applications but they look very washed out and way too cold. If I then make my picture look "natural" (whatever that means) on my screen, it looks too saturated and too warm on most of other screens I tried. (And on paper too.)
Proofing under my .icc does not give that problem, but it has the other: ACR and Photoshop proof differently. So I cannot use ACR for conversion and have to use the Canon's software, which (I suppose) uses the monitor profile for proofing.
Are you OYing about the fact that I do not convert the profile of my pictures before sending them to the printer?
    Vera
    Vera,
If G. Ballard's excellent, clearly written pages did not help you, you can bet I won't be able to either.
No, I was saying OY! about your entire post!
Good grief! you're turning off Color Management in Photoshop (or you think you are, but you're not "turning it off", you're just messing it up) and you're massively misusing your monitor profile.
Honestly I don't have the time, strength or inclination to explain it to you step-by-step.
CAUTION:  NEVER, ever set your working space to be your monitor profile!
    In very broad strokes:
Calibrate and profile your monitor, use the resulting profile ONLY in your OS and nowhere else, not anywhere in Photoshop. Set your working profile to a device-independent profile such as ProPhoto RGB, Adobe RGB or sRGB, embed the same device-independent profile such as ProPhoto RGB, Adobe RGB or sRGB, in your file (that is called "tagging your file"), work with your file and save it.
    • Then, for the web, Convert a copy the file to sRGB if it's not already tagged as sRGB, then soft proof (Proof) the file with the sRGB profile to see how other people who happen to have a calibrated monitor (less than 2% of all web viewers) will see it in a color managed application.
For heaven's sake DO NOT soft-proof with your gosh-darned monitor profile!!!   You're just fooling yourself that way.  No one else in the entire world will see the image the same way except by sheer serendipity.
—What kind of printer are you using?  Are you talking about your own inkjet printer or a commercial printing press?
    • If your own printer, then your file should be created in an Adobe RGB working color space (you can move up to an even wider space once you know what you are doing), tag your file with the embedded Adobe RGB profile, and then use your TARGET (paper) profile to soft-proof your image.  The Target Profile, also called paper profile, MUST be specific to a particular combination of paper/ink/printer.
    • If a commercial press, ask them to provide their own profiles for their print presses or devices so you can use it for soft proofing.
In both of these last two cases, use the paper target profile for soft proofing. NEVER your gosh-darned monitor profile!
Again:  If G. Ballard's excellent, clearly written pages did not help you, you can bet I won't be able to either.  I'm done here.

  • Camera Profiles and DNG Profile Editor beta 2 now available

    Hi everyone,
Beta 2 of the camera profiles and DNG Profile Editor are now available. Please visit here and enjoy:
    http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/DNG_Profiles
I hope to have more detailed release notes/changes for you soon. You are welcome to ask questions, but please note that it may take a while for me to respond.
    Eric

    Eric,
I followed very carefully your instructions for installing the new beta2 profiles and deleting the beta1 profiles, but have the same problems as many others. I'd like to provide a bit more information. I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium and have installed Photoshop CS4, updated with ACR5.1 and Lightroom 2.1 final release. As others have described, the default for all of my images was set to one of the Camera profiles (Canon faithful beta1), but now the profile name in Lightroom is blank. I tried looking at the other profiles and it does indeed appear that the beta2 profile is being used, but if I then reset the image it now shows ACR4.4, whereas the image had been imported with the camera profile as default. Also, if I open an image in ACR5.1 that was specified to use the same camera profile, it now shows ACR4.4 and it is not using the beta2 profile of what I had been using, I can see this by selecting the other profiles. Going back to Lightoom, I guess I could select all my images and select the Canon faithful beta2 profile, but then the mark shows up bottom right of the image showing that they have all been edited/modified, is there anyway to get all my images using the profile I was using but the beta2 version, without this happening and how about new imports?
    Thanks, David.

  • Customizing profile and copying to default

what is the best way to customize a profile and copy that to the default?
What I have been doing is
login as an admin, customize the desktop, settings, themes, etc... then log out
login as another admin user,  delete the Default user profile under c:\Users\Default
rename the Admin folder to Default
Go under the Default and remove the User.dat file
how else would you do it?

The only supported method for customizing the default user profile in Windows Vista and newer is to use the CopyProfile setting with Sysprep. This is the only way to ensure that all user-specific
information is properly removed from the profile and to ensure that new user accounts created from the default user profile are properly directed to their own, unique resources. Your error with new user profiles being directed to the Administrator profile’s
resources is a perfect example of this.
Once you have created a default user profile through this method and the profile has been cleaned of profile specific elements, that default user profile can be copied and moved to other locations
for use as a default user profile. For example, it can be used as a network default user profile, or a mandatory profile.
    The
link provided by arnavsharma provides the details for all of this.

  • Color Profile Issue Vista x64

    Hi..
I’m having the a problem but on Windows Vista Business X64. I installed an Acer LCD (X223w Q) yesterday for desktop expansion and updated its drivers automatically it installed the device drivers from God knows where and  since then the Photoshop has gone all crazy it always asks to select color profile when opening the file. Claiming that "The RGB document "try.bmp" has a file format that doesn't support embedded color profiles". It does the same for everything.
I’ve tried your solution from the following link
    http://lalor.net/index.php/2009/02/photoshop-colour-management-reset/
but the the OS doesn’t allow me to remove any color profile claiming that its system profile and can’t be removed. I’ve un-installed LCD drivers but it color profile Acer X223W is still showing in the advanced panel in ICC profile along with sRGB IEC61966-2.1 both have a file name and a class name 'display' written against them..
I've uninstalled and reinstalled graphics drivers as well as photoshop but nothing seems to be working. No matter what profile I select the photoshop opens it in a dark tint. How ever when I press Ctrl + Y to switch to Proof Colors its gets back to normal colors (My proof settings are set to Monitor RGB)
    Following are my System Details
    Machine : Lenovo 3000 n200
    OS: Windows Vista Business x64
Graphic Card : Nvidia Geforce Go 7300
I've never have had this problem before the installation of drivers for that LCD. And after searching the internet for over a day its driving me crazy
Please review the attachment for details.
I’d really appreciate if anyone could look into this issue..

Well, why not simply set the monitor to sRGB again? The location of the physical files is C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Printers\Color. You can delete the profile from there. Also reset PS' color management completely (Edit --> Color). I'm sure the warning has its reasons because based on your (wrong) monitor profile PS thinks it needs to compensate based on your CM policies...

  • Windows XP Pro (32-bit) and Vista Ultimate (64-bit) on the same Mac Pro HD?

Has anyone been able to install both Windows XP Pro (32-bit) and Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit) on the same dedicated Windows hard drive? I have four HD in my Mac Pro, and one of them is dedicated for Windows (and bootable via Boot Camp). I found the following technical articles about installing Windows XP & Vista on the same hard drive (using two separate partitions) using a VMWare machine as the test system:
    http://apcmag.com/howto_dual_boot_vista_and_xp_with_vista_installed_first__the_stepbystepguide.htm
    http://apcmag.com/howto_dualboot_vista_with_xp__stepbystep_guide_withscreenshots.htm
Has anyone successfully installed Windows XP (32-bit) and Vista 64-bit) on the same NTFS partition?
I already have Windows XP Pro (32-bit) SP3 installed on my single NTFS hard drive. I am looking for the best way to add the Vista 64-bit installation on the same hard drive.
Any thoughts and advise are appreciated.

Windows has its own list of boot OSs, and default, from msconfig. It will sit and wait for xx-seconds on startup in Windows if you want to boot from an alternate.
As to whether Apple's OS Switcher (aka startup disk bootcamp control panel or tray icon) sees both, I had Windows Home Premium and Ultimate 64, and pretty sure OS X saw both. That was pre-Leopard and before there were 64-bit Apple drivers.
I can't think of any scenerio of wanting to mix 32-bit and 64-bit on the same paritition, you realize you can't install the one over the other and must do a clean install.
When I added a partition out of main partition (I wanted to put search index and page file on their own partition) those partitions aren't seen - are hidden - to Leopard.

  • ODI Data Profiling and Data Quality

    Hi experts,
Searching about ODI features for data profiling and data quality I found (I think) many ... extensions? for the product, that confuse me. Cause I think there are at least three diferents ways to do data profiling and data quality:
In first place, I found that ODI has out of the box features for data profiling and data quality, but, acording to the paper, this features are too limited.
The second way I found was the product Oracle Data Profiling and Oracle Data Quality for Oracle Data Integrator 11gR1 (11.1.1.3.0) that is in the download page of ODI. Acording to the page, this product extends the existing inline Data Quality and Data profiling features of ODI.
Finally, the third way is Oracle Enterprise Data Quality that is another product that can be integrated to ODI.
I dont know if I understood good my alternatives. But, in fact, I need a general explanation of what ODI offer to do Data Quality and Data profiling. Can you help me to understand this?
    Very thanks in advance.

Hi after 11.1.1.3 version of ODI release, oracle no longer supports ODP/ODQ which is a trillium software product and this not owned by oracle. Oracle is recommending the usage OEDQ for quality purposes. It's better if you could spend time on OEDQ rather than trying to learn and implement ODP/ODQ in ODI

  • Oracle Data Profiling and Data Quality

    Hi,
How to create metabase for Oracle Data Profiling and Data Quality. Is metabase and repository are same.

    Hi,
You can create a metabase in the Metabase Manager:
    - Expand Control Admin
    - Click on Metabases
    - in the Metabases window, right-click on the white area and select Add...
    - go through the wizard to create your metabase
This is documented in the ODQ/ODP tutorial (http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/oracle-data-quality/pdf/oracledq_tutorial.pdf) and in the Documentation (in Metabase Manager or Oracle Data Quality go to Help and then Manuals).
    Thanks,

    Hi Jamesdwills,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
If you are using the same Apple ID on both devices, the Game Center profile should be the same.
Check out this information from the iPad User Guide.  Try signing out of the Game Center on both devices and then sign back in with the correct Apple ID:

  • How to use Device Profiles and Viewing Conditions Profile in Photoshop Elements 11?

In trying to get to grips with the Colour management aspects of PSE11, I have encountered the following problems:
Having selected "Display" a sequence of clicks (Change display settings -> Advanced settings -> Colour Management -> Colour Management tab -> Colour Management)
gives a screen which includes the headings:
Device Profile  and Viewing Conditions Profile.
    1. Device Profile. Besides sRGB and ARGB, the profile list includes the profiles for all of the Epson papers. (I have an Epson Stylus Photo PX810FW).
I changed the Profile to an Epson Grayscale, this was accepted within the menu, but there are no changes from normal when I viewed the image on the Windows screen or within
PSE11. ("normal" is sRGB or ARGB).
I thought it worth a try to test that, if I wanted the display image to closely represent what I would get on a particular Epson paper, this may be a way to do it.(I suspected this approach because I have never
    seen it in the literature!).
So what is the purpose of all of the paper Profiles appearing in the Display listing?
    2. The Viewing Conditions Profile has also several options. I have tried to find the criteria for choosing one rather than the other, but failed to find any information. Can anyone help? I seek general guidance
rather than the details of the Profiles.
    As a seperate question:
Selecting Image on the PSE11 menu across the top of the displayed image, and then Convert Colour Profile, I tried this process on an image, converting tiff to sRGB. When saved there was an extra asterisk in the saved title but in this case,
the file was still labelled tiff and there was no change in the number of Mbs. If a conversion has taken place, how is one to know?  Does saving a tiff file as jpeg change its colour profile? When is it useful to use this feature?
    Many thanks to all responders!

Addressing your second question, you are confusing two different things.
tiff is an image file format, as is jpeg, as is psd, as is png, as are dozens (if not hundreds, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_file_formats) of other formats.
A colour profile represents the colour characteristics of devices so that, for example, displays know how to display the colours, printers know how to print them.
Image files MAY, but do not have to, contain colour profiles.
