How do I stop a program from opening at start up? (iPhoto)
Also, my mac recently shuts down completely while in sleep mode.  Any reason why this happens?

If the app is opened when you shut down the Mac, untick Restore windows when logging back in. Open System Preferences > Users and Groups > Login Items and delete iPhoto

  • Programs automatically open last several documents - causing serious lag and confusion.

Since upgrading to Lion (clean install of 10.7.3), I've noticed that many programs have some extreme lag.  Programs that used to love because they were so fast (like preview) now take up to 45 seconds of spinning pinwheels before opening.  I've also noticed that when I open a program (such as preview), the program automatically opens the last several documents I had been working on. This is true across several platforms and programs including Preview, Word, Powerpoint, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc., etc., etc.,  - - as you all are probably aware some power point and InDesign files can be pretty massive and hog up a lot of processing power/RAM when opening.  It's really frustrating when these are documents I'm not actually interested in working on.  It's also frustrating that when in a meeting with my boss, if I open photoshop pictures of a recent family vaction will automatically open up.  Terribly unprofessional.
How can I make this stop?
    If I didn't already say, I'm running 10.7.3 on a newer (fall 2011) 13" MBP.

Couple of things to try -
    • Go to System Preferences > General; in the Section "Recent Items", uncheck the item "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps".
    • With the program (such as Preview) open, go to its File menu, select "Open Recent..." - from that submenu, select "Clear menu".

  • Firefox is automatically opening upon start up

Firefox automatically opening on my MacBook upon start up, just started 7 days ago. Not sure why? I've tried resetting under preferences. That didn't work. I'm not a tech person. But I find it frustrating when this happens.

Sounds like a bit of spyware to me.
I suggest downloading Ccleaner (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download) and running that program. Note this will remove most of your saved usernames/passwords and all of your history/saved offline pages.

  • Safari Automatically Opens after Starting or Restarting???

Every time I start up or restart my iMac, Safari automatically opens.  It and no other apps were open when I restarted or shut down.  Why would this be happening and how do I stop it?
I looked under System Preferences - Users - Login Items and Safari was not there.  I also right-click on Safari in my dock and the option to "Open at Login" is not checked.  Anywhere else I could look?   It's just annoying..

Thanks for the response, Linc.  I have just a couple things in my Login Items.  Doubt they'd be causing it.

  • IPad 2 Question - Graphics Program Automatically Opens???

    Hello!
Whenever I connect my iPad 2 to my computer, iTunes opens, but it also causes my graphic program to open, which is very annoying. I looked thru preferences in iTunes with no luck. Any ideas??
    Thanks!

Resolved Issue . . . Posting Resolution in case someone has same issue
I found where to specify by going to My Computer which showed my iPad icon, then I right clicked to get Properties, and it allowed me to change the option to Open With Specific Program, which was PhotoImpact, or Take No Action, which is what I change it to.
    Thanks for everyones help!!!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If you have OS X Mountain Lion or Lion and you turn off your computer with those applications opened, Mac OS X will open them the next time you start Mac OS X. To avoid this, open  > Shut Down and unmark Restore windows when logging back in

  • Automatic Opening on Start Up

    Hello,
For some reason Captivate has started to automatically load
up and open to the welcome screen on start up. It doesn't happen
consistently but both my colleague and I have experienced it
several times over the past couple of days. It happens when we log
in for the first time in the morning and also if we have to restart
    for any reason.
Has anyone experienced this and if so can you tell me why?
    Thanks in advance
    Alex

    Hi Alex
Well, the first place to look is to click Start > Programs
(or All Programs) > Startup. That's usually the most likely
place to look. If you find entries there for Captivate, delete
    them.
Assuming that place is empty, the next place to look is in
the Windows Registry. To easily do this, click Start > Run and
type MSCONFIG into the Run dialog. Then click OK. Click the Startup
tab and look to see if there are any entries related to Captivate.
It's also worth asking your IT folks about. I think that some
network login scripts can also automatically load certain items. So
    double check with them.
    Cheers... Rick

  • When sharing a link from Firefox, the program automatically opens Internet Explorer and not Thunderbird. Can Thunderbird be made the default for sharing links from Firefox?

When sharing a link or page via email, either the webpage or Firefox will open up Internet Explorer to share the link or page. As I use Thunderbird for emailing, could Firefox open Thunderbird automatically instead of internet Explorer?

From Firefox, I click on "File' and then 'Email link'.
This results in a new Outlook message opening automatically, with the URL copied into the body of the message.
I then add my own text, see the screenshot image. That's where the formatting problems come in!
    Cheers,
    Michelle

  • Automatically open a program after opening a program

Here's what I want to do... I have a menubar program that gives me info about the current iTunes track. Thing is, I don't want the program to open until I open iTunes. Is there a way to have the program automatically open when I open iTunes? (and maybe even automatically quit when I close iTunes?) Thanks!

Scripts run under the current user account and can only affect the current user's environment. Therefore you can't have a script run as user A that affects user B's environment (e.g. launch an application in the other user's environment).
Therefore there's no way (I can think of) for a script to initiate a fast user switch followed by launching an app in the second user's account.

  • Programs that automatically open on startup

Can anyone tell me how to STOP Skype from automatically opening on Start up of my MBPro ? It never did this and I haven't updated OSX lately, nor can I with 10.4.11. Skype now opens when I power on my mac, then hangs - always, and I have to force quit it. There is NO option in Skype's own menu list to stop it from auto opening on start up. Grrrr
Thanks to you if you can help.

Open the Accounts pane of System Preferences and check the list of login items for your user account.

  • Why does the folder "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Elements" open automatically when I start my PC?

Why does the folder "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Elements" open automatically when I start my PC? How do I adjust settings to stop this from happening?

    Hi,
This folder is probably treated as a program to run at startup.
So you will have to look at the places where such programs are referenced.
For instance, you may have a shortcut to that folder in your Start Menu > Startup.
Or it may be in the Registry.
Click on Start >  Execute, the type msconfig and click OK.
This will show you in the Startup tab all the programs launched at startup.

  • I have a new Mac Mini. When I start it, the message and mail program's open automatically. How do I change this?

When I boot up my Mac Mini, the mail and message program's open automatically. How do I stop this?
I heard that all program's that are open when shutting down, will open again on booting up. I always close all program's before shutting down!

Go to preferences and General and be sure the box is checked that states to close all programs on exit.  Also, right clcik your mail icon in the dock and under options be sure the open at login is not checked.
