Lately my computer has been acting really slow and now this new program called Mac Guard popped up and keeps saying my computer is at risk and that the system is infected. Is my computer really at risk?

You need to get rid of that. MacGuard / MacDefender / MacSecurity. It has multiple names. It's malware not a virus.

It's malware. Follow the instructions linked below to remove it. The name is different from what the instructions show, but otherwise the procedure should be the same. If you entered your credit card number, cancel the card immediately.

Run ClamXav. It's a free virus checker. It should quarantine it.

The only problem is now InDesign crashes at startup. I have the original disks and serial number (CS3) The error message is "required resources are missing". Same message if I try to uninstall. They're probably just interested in getting $ from you, there are several companies who advertise in a way that suggests 'official' support for all sorts of things. Unfortunately, if they had access as you describe, they potentially could have installed other software and/or read any of your files.
Ideally - change all passwords for email/banking/login & restore a backup from before this happened.

Yes it's MS Windows! You will need a license of MS Windows (preferable Windows 7) and from there you can decide on the strategy for running Windows on your iMac. You can use Boot Camp (you already have this) or you use virtualization software such as Parallels or Fusion. For your situation I'd recommend virtualization software. However for only one program I'd do some due diligence to see if there is a OS X version. You can start with the App store or simply use Google to search.

Malware includes computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, spyware, dishonest adware, scareware, crimeware, most rootkits, and other malicious and unwanted software or program.
Therefore, Malware is a concept that includes computer viruses.
I surely know the difference among Trojans, viruses, worm, spyware, etc. But I usually would like to calle all of them as " Virus" because I think "Virus" has been a general and popular concept for all computer threats.
Anyway, the most important thing here is to remove the Mac Guard infection and I just wanted to offer you guys some more information. If you think it is not ok with you, just ignore it. Just like all of you here: I offered you the information and it is your choice to accpt the information or ignore the information.

It costs $19 dollars on the Mac app store and is worth every penny.

Hi Linc, thanks for this ... it is weird, we tried this previously, but we only did a restart.
This morning our Mac was 'off' even though we hadn't turned it off, (maybe a power outage) I restarted and ran the calpatch immediately, and it worked !!
it is embarrassing, because as a service engineer, I am always telling customers to restart and even power down completely before trying again.

Poster, calendar, card design program for Mac

I recently switched from a Dell to a Mac and I had on my old computer a program called Art Explosion Publisher Pro, but unfortunately I cannot install it on the Mac. I was wondering if anyone could possibly suggest a program similar to Art Explosion Publisher Pro that I can use on my Mac. I know IPhoto can do a lot, but I was looking for something similar to Art Explosion. If anyone could please give me some suggestions I will greatly appreciate it.

I Hate Mac Guard!

How do i prevent this stupid-selfish-annoying-useless apps to shown up when i'm using internet "please-please-please tell me how", even it has to cause any money to do so, i'd glad to pay.
i really really really hate it when it it shown up while i'm using the internet, this is the most annoying things and already get into my nerves. i can't stand it anymore....
my friends says that the mac guard apps is some kind of virus its self.
my friend has this trouble also, and we all agree that we'd prefer to have a virus in our computer rather than this f_cking app to shown up in our computer, could u please tell me how to prevent this app to shown up, help me please please please...

It's a Trojan that got onto your computer
Look for the MacGuard program in your System Preferences > Accounts > Log in items and "-" it out.
Find it in your Applications folder and delete it.
Use Spotlight to search for "avrunner" and "MacGuard" see if any traces of it are around.
Right now it seems harmless and just tries to get your money, but that can change. If your experiencing strange behavior on your computer then you might consider having the operating system reinstalled.
The following is technical, complicated, currently optional and at your descretion:
If you know how to backup your files, c boot off the installer disk, Zero erase your drive, format HFS+ Journaled, reinstall OS X, reinstall programs and return your files from backup you might consider doing that (or having it done). Consider TimeMachine drive compromised and needed to erased as well. (you can set it up again later)
