Program cleanup utility?
Hi,
I am a longtime Windows user, and recent Mac user. One of the problems I used to face on my Windows PC was inefficient application de-installation. De-installation is often often incomplete with the result that there are always registry entries and files (of the de-installed app) lying around. Over time this takes up disk space and the 'clutter' eventually affects performance. I eventually downloaded a third-party app to take care of the problem.
My question is this: Does this happen on a Mac and do I need to clean up the clutter manually?

If the purpose of removing applications is just to cleanup space, usually you can just remove the application, but you need to be aware that residual preferences may not work if you were to later come in and install a similar application that is updated or older. Some applications depend on similar resources to other applications, and there can be a tug of war for those resources. It is rarer with Mac OS X, but not unheard of. Having a good method of uninstalling what the installer wrote into the resources helps not having to hunt and peck for those resources to find out why further installatiosn may not work. So always make sure you know that the uninstallation covers all the pieces, and that shared resources are not left behind unless they are the same ones needed by your other applications.

Is there a program to replace the Windows installer cleanup utility?
Trying to update itunes but can't remove the old program, get message C:\Documents and Settings\mark\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple\Apple Software Update\. Anyone know if there is a replacement for Windows Installer Cleanup Utility ? Or some other way to get rid of the old program?
Thanks.Microsoft retired the CleanUp utility because it can cause problems with other programs installed by the Microsoft Windows Installer. The replacement is a Microsoft "Fix It" solution; it is not a Java app but a downloadable executable and is run locally.
Due to potential problems with the outdated Microsoft Installer CleanUp Utility, use the Fix it solution before attempting to find and run msicuu2.exe. It is well written and does not harm other programs installed by the Windows Installer (1 potential problem with the old utility). It may take several minutes (I have seen 20-30) to uninstall the app but when the Fix it solution finishes successfully the app is uninstalled.

if you have upgraded from 12.0 then this might be a bug, the MM Cleanup Utility obejct in CMS repository didn't get updated during upgrade, you can try the following workaround
go to <BOE Installation>\BusinessObjects Enterprise 12.0\Packages folder
open BusinessObjects_MM_Utility_Log_Cleanup_dfo.xml in text editor (notepad)
change the following
<propertybag name="SI_MM_UTILITY_PROPERTIES" type="Bag" flags="0">
to
<propertybag name="SI_MM_UTILITY_PROPERTIES" type="Bag" flags="0" version="3000100">
restart the CMS Server -
For someone who can't use the windows installer cleanup utility.
I have been an iTunes user for years and have usually updated to the newest version whenever prompted and have had very little trouble with the program despite always using PCs. However, I recently purchased an iPhone which is fun, but requires the newest iTunes.
I tried to install the new version and received a message which many people have, which said "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable."
I searched online and found the solution that said to use the Windows Cleanup Utility or whatever, however, my computer barred me from doing this for some reason. Even when I manually attempted to register with the Command Prompt window, I was unable to get the program to work. I tried to fix THIS part, but received another error message which directed me to format my computer, which I am unwilling to do at this time. I don't even want to lose my library but I'm kind of resigned to that at this time.
So what I'm asking is, is there any other way to get this sorted out without the utility package? Any way to direct my computer to where itunes.msi would be on my computer? Is there anyway to fix this, seeing as it seems to be a recurring problem in the installation of this version? Thank you.+it's essentially telling me I'm not the administrator when not only am I, but I'm the ONLY user on this computer+
Your sig says XPS. I assume that means XP. Your permissions must be corrupt in the registry, even though you are on an admin account. I got this same error when I upgraded my laptop to XP SP3. I had to run a tool from microsoft to fix it.
Scroll down to the advanced troubleshooting section on this page and run the subinacl stuff. I went and watched a movie while it ran - just be patient.

Botched Embedded Controller Program Service Utility upgrade.

It seems that I might have a little problem. I've recently started updating my T43 with ThinkVantage Update program and the first couple of updates went like a breeze. Even the new BIOS installed alright. But when I started upgrading Embedded Controller Program Service Utility it suddenly stopped at that gray screen saying that the system was now updating and is telling me not to turn it off in any case. The thing is, it says it should take about 30 seconds while I have been waiting for over an hour but to no avail.
I am a little afraid of turning of my computer, don't really want to damage it. Does any of you have any ideas what should I do in such circumstances? Any help would be much appreciated.with the bios upgrade through windows, the process is quite simple but there is potential for interference from other programs that is going on in the background, this is especially a problem with laptop that have not been maintained properly in terms of regular virus scanning, deleting unwanted programs, keeping background processes to the minimal. For a more secure update, try to do the bios update through the ISO image method.

In this case its the usb-serial adapter that is likely the cause of the issue. As mentioned in this KB it is likely that MAX doesn't know how to recognize the third-party adapter. You may want to refer to this KB that talks about making VISA calls to third-party devices as it may be useful.

Anyone know of an address book cleanup utility? I've got over 5,000 entries in my address book -- some duplicated many times. I'd love some simple utility to merge duplicates intelligently. Any such thing?
There is a Check for duplicates under the Card menu, but I don't like it as it doesn't let you see which cards are duplicated.
If you want to try Applescript, here is one that I have used a couple of times. If you run it in Script Editor it will display in the Result window a list of duplicates found, based on the name. This gives you an opportunity to review the cards (you might have several John Smiths who are different, so you could give them a different middle name) before taking action. When you are happy with the list displayed remove the "--" at the start of the "delete APerson" line and run the script again; the duplicates (but not the first instance!) will be deleted.

I kept getting this message everytime I tried to re-install iTunes after tried every possibly methods I could find on internet. I couldn't even see Apple Software Update when open MS Cleanup Utility window or anywhere else in my computer files and I still get this same message every single time. Cleanup Utility for CS3 CS4 on Vista 64-bit
I am in the process of uninstalling CS4 in hopes of solving some issues. Premiere and AE stall when opening up either program. In doing so, I have sufficiently confused myself, so I need a step-by-step guide. I ran the Windows uninstaller, but some Adobe components are still there. When I first upgraded from CS3 to CS4, the installer left all of the CS3 apps on my computer. I am not sure if that is a problem, but I would like to get rid of CS3 to eliminate more confusion. CS4 does no include Audition OnLocation, or Ultra, which I would like to keep.
I have read somewhere about an Adobe cleanup script and a Windows cleanup, but I have not found them online anywhere. Will someone provide me a link to the Cleanup Scripts and instructions on whatever I need to do a clean install of CS4?
I disconnected the Matrox MX02 Mini and I will need to know when to re-connect it (before or after installing CS4?)
Attached is a list of all the Adobe Apps still installed after running the control panel's uninstaller.
Should I remove these with the Windows Clean up Utility? Is it safe to remove everyting with the name "Adobe"?

Fixing problems with the Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup Utility
Sorry for the long subject. I am having what appear to be common problems with my acrobat reader for which the only solution appears to be using the microsoft windows installer cleanup thing.
I have acheived downloading the utility to my desktop but when I try to run it I get an error message as follows:
Across the top of the message it says 'WINDOWS SCRIPT HOST' and in the box it says:

Does anyone have any clues as to where I can go from here as I am stuck with a program I can neither use or uninstall, and a reascue plan that doesn't want to cooperate either. And please treat me like a 2 yr old with the technical stuff. Thanks. :-)
KarenCan you try to download it again, perhaps to the C:\ drive rather than the Desktop? Delete the Desktop download, then open Windows Explorer, and run the installer from the C:\ drive.

i have been using illustrator 10 & CS5 photoshop trial version fine on my windows vista (illustrator for 2 yrs on this computer). i got CS2 so i uninstalled both programs before installing the CS2. after installing i never got a finished window & it just closed. when i tried to open illustrator & indesign it closed as soon as it finished opening. photoshop did ask for registration info & then shut down/closed as well. i tired to uninstall from program/features in control panel but it doesn't work, it doesn't prompt me to do anything so adobe help had me install the windows installer clean up utility to remove programs not installed correctly. they are still not uninstalled & when i tried to reinstall the 1st cd gets to initializing & then stops. i now have removed all the adobe folders from my c drive & still cannot remove. i need to reinstall - HELP!!!! thankyou.
