Program design flaw in After Effects - Position

I am having a heck of a time getting my credits to scroll up properly. A major problem is the program automatically adds a keyframe point every time one moves things. My credits start and stop at bizarre places, and at more places than there appears to be key frames,or they go in the wrong direction and then change direction on their own accord. And the process of placing or modifying the start and finish positions of the text is not at all intuitive. I cannot even figure out whether the first keypoint is supposed to be the start, or finish point.Yes, I've watched the videos, and read the help, but I would be grateful for some simple instruction how I can get a long credit to scroll.
Also, there seems to be no master command to disengage or delete all command information for say position. I have been using the revert function, but one should be able to cancel everything at once if desired.

I've seen your desperate posts from the past few days, and I gotta tell you: I can feel your pain, but you really are trying to jump into the deep end of the pool, and your lack of basic AE knowledge is like wearing lead weights when you jump in.  It doesn't help that AE is definitely NOT an application you can use intuitively, nor does it help that AE's online help is more of a reference tool than it is a learning tool... Adobe really has to work on that.
AE has its own way of thinking.  Its own arcane lexicon.  Its own way of solving a problem.  It's really tough for a beginner to grasp that.  While many applications have a quick-start, get-your-feet-wet set of instructions, AE doesn't.  It really demands that you walk before you run, that you learn the basics before you launch off into the fun stuff.  You can't define a trick you want to learn and expect to find a step-by-step how-to.
So how do you learn the basics?  Forget about AE's online help: as mentioned earlier, it's a reference work, not a textbook.  Here's an example: you can look up "French Language" in the encyclopedia and find a wealth of information about its history, a brief description of syntax, the origin of words, etc. but you won't learn French out of an encyclopedia.  You take a French class, invest in Rosetta Stone, get a French language textbook... a variety of things.  When starting to learn French, you don't make your first project a written critique of the works of Jean-Paul Sartre.  The same applies to learning AE.  It really is a lot like learning a foreign language.
Here are some other learning options... but they all require learning the basics first: it's a fact of life in AE-Land.
Todd's Getting Started link is a good beginning point, but it's no good if you're impatient.  You've got to go through it, and not cherry-pick what YOU think is important.  You'll probably be wrong.  There are also certain things that are lacking because it's all free, and the topics can be hit-and-miss.
You say there's nothing like a book.  Fortunately, two highly-respected AE practitioners, Chris and Trish Meyer, have a set of books available for various AE versions.  They've been with After Effects since Version 1.  With the possible exception of CS 5.5, you'll find a fine "Learn AE" book by the Meyers, and it's just a google away.  The Meyers' books almost always come with footage and project files so you can play along at home.  I swear by these books for identifying the Basic Concepts And Things You Need To Know.  Again, patience is the watchword.
There are quite a few books out besides the Meyer's works, and I've found them on the shelf at Barnes and Noble.  You can check 'em out yourself.  You might even find one called After Effects For Dummies, and you shouldn't take offense: EVERYBODY'S a dummy when they first begin learning AE.
Total Training has AE training DVDs, and they're also highly-regarded.  I used them back when I was first learning AE (and I continue to learn AE to this day).  They too come complete with footage and project files.
Todd and Angie Taylor, also highly-ranked among the Who's Who in the AE community, have training available on DVD:
http://www.peachpit.com/store/product.aspx?isbn=0321734866
Many of the lessons Todd links to in his Getting Started section come from this, but you get footage and files with the paid version.  I have this one myself, and I use it.
Lynda.com also offers AE training, but I've never used it.
That's a pretty good list of popular ways to learn After Effects, but each one stresses that learning the basics is essential.  Many have tried to learn AE the way you're currently doing it, and they've either failed, given up on AE (a real shame) or accepted that they need to learn it the recommended way.
While you might not like what I just wrote, that's the situation: you learn AE a certain way, which may not be the way you want.  That's just the truth of it.

This just started happening?? Please help
Every time I add a light to a scene in After Effects the program freezes

What is your After Effects version number? You said you're running "CS6", so the version number should start with 11. The latest version of CS6 is 11.0.4 - do you have that? (The latest version of AE is 13.2.0.49, in case anyone was wondering).
Do you have your comp set to standard renderer or ray-traced?
    What are your computer specs?
Also, what Rick and Bogiesan asked.

  • Extension Manager not finding After Effects CC

    Hey all,
I have been having a bit of an issue in regards to Adobe Extension Manager. I just installed the new CC version, and wanted to install an extension to Adobe After Effects. However, it does not show up on the Extension Manager screen:
As you can see, it shows some of my other CC programs, but not After Effects. I used Adobe Extendscript to print out a log. Can you help me figure out what I need to do to install this extension to After Effects?

What should I do to get that showing up on the CC Extension Manager?
    Thanks,
    Sam Kramer

This is as designed. Extension Manager doesn't support After Effects. If the extension you want to install is a .ZXP file, you can install it anyway. I guess it will be shown in "Others" after installation.

  • After Effects Hanging on Initializing Media Core

I downloaded the trial for After Effects CC 2014 to make sure it would work on my computer, but when I try to open it the start up screen hangs at initialing media core. I made sure that After Effects was allowed through the firewall, but it's still not working. I want to buy it, but I can't if it won't start. Please help!

I can't promise this will help and I have email from Adobe support that specifically says this won't work and isn't the problem. So if you want to try this, it's just working advice from some shlub who wants the software to work and doesn't care whose feelings are hurt. This response fixes all versions of After Effects and Premiere Pro in the CC and CC 2014 series. The file ExporterAVI.prm is bad. It has had a flaw since around 2013. Now you can fix this taking no chance with your computer or installation, so if you follow this carefully you'll do nothing to hurt your setup and if it doesn't work, just change it back.
Each application has it's separate copy in it's separate folder, so just go to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects CC\Support Files\(Media Core Plug-ins)\Common
Find the file called ExporterAVI.prm and rename it (I always just rename it to ExporterAVI.prmold
Now run After Effects CC. If it loads, you found the problem. If it doesn't rename it back to it's original name and, no harm, no foul.
If it does load, know that you can't export an AVI file. You need a PRM file that works. I always keep one saved. It will work for the CC version and the CC 2014 version. It is from an old copy of the original CC version of both programs.t is 159Kb and dated 8/20/2013. The properties detail tab actually says it was created on 3/27/2012. Every time an update come out that affects this, it will stop working, so just rename it again and put back in the old file and you'll get full functionality. I've had to use it six time since the update after 8/2013, but I have full functionality of all four versions of both programs, but it won't work with the current version of ExporterAVI.prm. So far, that means every time it loads an update, I have to fix the file in the After Effects CC, After Effects CC 2014, Premiere Pro CC and Premiere Pro CC 2014. The same file is used in Prelude, Encore and Media Encoder, but I don't use those programs. so I don't know if they freeze up or not.
Also look at the last entry in your plugin loading.log file, it should say something like:
    Loading E:\Win8\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects CC 2014\Support Files\(Media Core plug-ins)\Common\ExporterAVI.prm
Invalid registry entry found so the plugin will be loaded from disk.
    Loading from disk...
and then the log ends and the program freezes.
p.s. If you don't have a copy of the old version of the file, call Adobe, don't ask me - I can't give copies of it to anyone, I just make them because I keep backups before every update.

  • Edge and After Effect

    Hello .
I m a motion designer working with after effect for 10 Years.
    I m interesse by Edge...
May i importe Vidéo in Edge  ( Like Quick time or H264 ) in Edge and then make this vidéo interacitve?
When appear the firth commercial version of edge?
    Thanks you.

    Hello Atparadisium,
I started out just like you. I am an After Effecsts motion designer. Adobe Edge Animate is an excellent tool and I think you will be impressed with what you can do already in the program.
To answer your question, yes you can "use" Quicktime but I would recommend using .mp4 extension and h.264 compression. Try to reduce files to as small as possible without effecting quality.
Unfortunately, at this moment Edge does not accept video files natively in its system. However, there is a work around for that and it involves some code. Don't be frightened by the code, I didnt know a thing about it when I started about 6 months ago. If you can tell me more about what you are trying to do I can help you get a video file into edge and make it interactive.

  • Media Encoder CC not using GPU acceleration for After Effects CC raytrace comp

I created a simple scene in After Effects that's using the raytracer engine... I also have GPU enabled in the raytracer settings for After Effects.
When I render the scene in After Effects using the built-in Render Queue, it only takes 10 minutes to render the scene.
But when I export the scene to Adobe Media Encoder, it indicates it will take 13 hours to render the same scene.
So clearly After Effects is using GPU accelleration but for some reason Media Encoder is not.
I should also point out that my GeForce GTX 660 Ti card isn't officially supported and I had to manually add it into the list of supported cards in:
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects CC\Support Files\raytracer_supported_cards.txt
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Media Encoder CC\cuda_supported_cards.txt
While it's not officially supported, it's weird that After Effects has no problem with it yet Adobe Media Encoder does...
I also updated After Effects to 12.1 and AME to 7.1 as well as set AME settings to use CUDA but it didn't make a difference.
    Any ideas?

    That is normal behavior.
The "headless" version of After Effects that is called to render frames for Adobe Media Encoder (or for Premiere Pro) using Dynamic Link does not use the GPU for acceleration of the ray-traced 3D renderer.
If you are rendering heavy compositions that require GPU processing and/or the Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing, then the recommended workflow is to render and export a losslessly encoded master file from After Effects and have Adobe Media Encoder pick that up from a watch folder to encode into your various delivery formats.

  • After Effects unable to render error -1610153464

I use Adobe CS6. Today, I upgraded to CC. I work on a MacBook Pro with 8GB RAM, and the latest OS X, Mountain Lion. Here's my dilemma.
Although I own the CS6 Master Collection, I have never used After Effects. So, I am an AE newbie. For years I have mainly used the other apps, PhotoShop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Flash, InDesign, etc.
I wanted to prepare a presentation for my company. I purchased an After Effects template that I liked. http://videohive.net/item/new-company-presentation/5182042
When I opened the template I received the following message: "After Effects: this project must be converted from version 9.0 (Windows) and will open as an untitled project. The original file swill be unchanged."
After quite some time creating and preparing all my samples in a Quicktime movies I was ready to customize the AE template.
Following the AE template author's instructions I was able to customize the template, editing text, importing my movies. When I added the "Final Comp" to the Render Cue, and then started rendering, I immediately got the following error: "After Effects error: Rendering error while writing to file '/Users/...Final Comp.mov'. An output device module failed. The file may be damaged or corrupt. (-1610153464)"
I tried rendering the original unedited file. Same error.
    I tried researching solutions.
I turn off my firewall. "blockage in the communication between After Effects and the Adobe QT32 Server." http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2011/02/troubleshooting-quicktime-errors-with-after-ef fects.html
    I tried removing a third-party Quicktime importer components. http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/startup-screen-hangs-premiere-after.html
I tried exporting the file from AE to Premier Pro. But, got the following message when opening the file in Premier:
"The preset is used by one or more sequences in this project requires third-party components that could not be located. These sequences will be modified to use a custom sequence setting instead. To continue editing using the original preset, quit the application without saving the project, then install any third-party components that are required and reopen the project." Note: The author of the AE template said that no external plug-ins were used, that everything was created in AE.
Also, when opening the file in Premier, a "Load Project" window open listing the following:
"Video filter missing: AE.ADBE Color Control
    "Video filter missing: AE.ADBE Fill
"Video filter missing: AE.ADBE Slider Control"
I attempted to do a render from Premier anyway. But, got the following error: "Could not connect to Adobe After Effects. Please verify that Adobe After Effects and Adobe Dynamic Link components are installed." I checked, They are!
I finally "bit the bullet" and upgrade to, and installed the Creative Cloud version of After Effects hoping that this may be a solution.
Today, I installed After Affects CC. This time when I began the render, AE started to render. Then, after a couple seconds of video being generated the same errors reappeared!
Can anyone offer some guidance as to how I can get this resolved?

Today, I created a whole new project. Imported an Adobe Illustrator file with five layers. One background layer, the rest were text layers. The entire project is 11 seconds. I made some minor effects to the text in After Effects, position, and opacity. Went to render it, and the same error appeared.
I have the error log file if it will help.
    Please help.

  • Why does my After Effects CS5.5 keep crashing on me when I switch to other apps?

I have Adobe After Effects CS5.5 (v.10.5.1) and it keeps crashing when switching between AE and other programs.  Here's a video so you can see what's happening.
I don't have any special plug-ins loaded except for what came with the program.  OpenGL rendering is turned on and have tried turning it off to see if it make the problem go away and it doesn't make a difference.
Greatly appreciate any assistance I can get on this.

  • Premiere and After Effects CS5.5 crash on startup

I had been using Production Premium CS5.5 for a few months without any problems. Then there was a power outtage a couple nights ago and since then Premiere and After Effects crash whenever I try to open them. I get an error message like:
Crash in progress. Last logged message was: <5980><AppDirs> <5> Required Dir = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects CS5.5\Support Files\Required
The rest of the programs still work fine. I reinstalled a few times, used the Cleaner tool and also tried some solutions on this page:http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/errors-exit-code-6-exit.html, but no luck.
My last installation actually didn't give me any fatal errors or errors, but AE and Premiere still don't work.

These errors resulted in installer Exit Code mentioned below.
I'm using Windows 7 on a custom-built PC with i7-2600 processor and 16GB RAM, ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN 3 mobo, 560 Ti graphics card, 80GB Intel SSD for boot drive.
Note: I actually planned on upgrading to a new 120GB SSD next week and doing a clean install, do you think that could also fix this problem?

Browntimmy I would recommend posting in those product specific forums with your inquiry.  There is troubleshooting steps which can be employed for both products which are not install related.  The link to the forums is as follows:

  • Premiere and After effects no longer work after graphics card upgrade

So heres my problem. A week ago my gtx 295 died. So I got a new gtx 780 and new ram. After installing my new card and installing the latest drivers premier and after effects cs6 crash on the splash screen. Whats wierd is these are the only programs that crash. After effects cs4 works fine along with all my maya stuff. I reinstalled premier and it still crashes for some reason.
I'm running vista ultimate 64bit with the cs6 production suite. I do have some plugins on after effects including the trapcode suite amd optical flares.
    Any tips?

The only thing I can think of is that Windows Vista is not one of the supported operating systems for Premiere Pro CS6. Only Windows 7 is listed. Is it possible to upgrade your OS?
    Thanks,

Here are some workaround/fix I tried to do:
    Uninstal and re-install.
Uninstall, clear avery adobe product, remove paths and traces, relaunch, and then re-install.
Same as step 2, with firewall turned off, Anti-virus removed.
    Run installation with Administrator rights.
Launch program via Compatibility settines Vista, Vista SP1, Vista SP2, Windows 7
All drivers are updated and reupdated.
    Re-installed all GPU drivers.
    Refreshed my Wndows 8 OS.
Reformated my Windows 8 OS then Installed AE cs6.
Installed AE on my F drive instead of C [C drive is an SSD and F Drive is an HDD]
I am able to see the AE CS6 splash screen but it will prompt a message "Has Stopped Working".
    Other things to take note:
I am able to launch Renderer Machine without any issues.
I am also able to launch other Adobe Products that came along with AE CS6 try version.
    Latest Quicktime version is installed.

    Hi Todd,
    Thanks you for replying.
After updating to 11.0.2, I am still unable to launch AE CS6.

  • After Effects CC hangs on launch indefinitely

Never used, newly installed After Effects CC hangs on lauch indefinitely with no error messages every time I launch it. I have to force a shutdown each time. Anyone out there know what the problem is? Thanks if anyone can help!
    My specs:
    After Effects CC 12.2.1
    Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 bit
    GPU: GeForce GTX 670 w/ driver 334.89
    CPU: Intel Core i7 - 3770K @ 3.50GHz
    Memory: 32 GB RAM
    Things I've tried:
Reinstalled AE about 4 times, (tried both with and without the 12.2.1 patch)
I've updated my video card driver, and also tried using legacy versions
I've tried logging out of Creative Cloud before launch
    Restarted my PC many times
I get the same result whether or not I have other applications running
    Things I've noticed:
GPUsniffer.exe seems to be over active- Using a ton of CPU and I couldn't uninstall AE untill I manually shut it down from Processes in the Task Manager
The application itself- AE doesn't show up in the Task Manager under Applications

We had this problem for a while now, the Splash screen hang with the message 'Converting Scrap…' in the info panel.
Our old work around was deleting the preferences folder in "C:\Users\Adminsitrator\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\After Effects" and replacing it with a backup of this folder, removing the cache folder and doing a reboot.
Today that didn't work either - so I followed the instructions from the Error Log (Check Aplication Log in the Windows Events Viewer) and found a tool called 'Action Center' in the Control Panel.
Inside the tool click on 'Troubleshooting' > Programs > Program Compatibility Troubleshooter   .. and follow the instructions.
It will run your application in some kind of safe / compatibility mode; and for us that did the trick!
