Program Menu for mac equivalent to Windows Start Menu

I have just spent 30 minutes trying to find an image scanner app that I downloaded when I first got the Mac 6 months ago, had no idea what it was called, so had to trawl through every single unknown app and folder in the Applications directory.
In Windows, under the Programs menu, I used to have sub groups, such as Internet, Graphics, Audio, Utilities etc.
Is there a way to have a menu group structure/pop up menu type system in Leopard, Ok so yo have the dock for regularly used apps, but I donot want shortcuts on it for every single app on the machine.
Some sort of convenient groups menu system as in Windows that allows you quick access to rarely used apps ...especially ones that yoy have forgotten about, and cant user spotlight to find, since you cant remember their names!
Either an app, or a a way of doing it within Leopard would be better.
I have tried a few freeware ones, but wonder if anyone had any other suggestions that I may have missed

I have already added several other apps of my own to the Utilities folder. i was wondering if I could create new folders within the Application folder and then drag them into there, but if you cant move the Apps that came with the OS, then that would get a bit messy.
You can, but sometimes software update and the installers don't like it. So you should leave them alone. I suppose what you could do is;
Make a new folder in your home folder somewhere called Apps.
Create within that as many folders as you like with the categories you described.
Create aliases by right clicking all the Applications you need to and move them into the subfolders in your new Apps folder.
Put that folder in the dock.
I had tried to create folders full of alises, but that does not work either, some apps do not give you the option to create an alias for them.
For some reason some apps (Tag 0.4.1, GPSBabel, VueScan, SuperDuper, Carbon Copy, Chronosync etc ) when you right click on them do not show a 'Make Alias' in the contextual menu.
Maybe it's a Snow Leo thing? I seem to be able to.

Sorry, the link was incomplete. Is good now.

Is there a good apple based alternative to the persona finance software program "quicken for mac"?  It is a poorly supported program.

I switched from Quicken on a Windows computer to iBank on a Mac. It is a very good program, has very good free download connections to financial institutions (optional), and very good reports. The only negative is that it is just different enough from Quicken that there is a learning curve and the first month or two were frustrating -- but that is likely true of anything that you might change to. http://www.iggsoftware.com/ibank/

  • Compare iWork/Office for Mac with Office Windows

I am moving toward google apps, but their doc program is not nearly as robust as MS WORD (windows). So, I need a sophisticated word processor...
I have iWork 09 (bought it with the computer) and am considering buying MS Office for mac. I would prefer to use iWork (that is, an apple program), but don't want to go through the learning curve to find out it too is not powerful enough.

I, too, was a Windows vet until I switched in '03. My fiance has been on Mac since college--her Powerbook Duo (w/ OS 7.5) still works.

Ditto. Google Apps are probably another year or two behind what desktop apps offer.

Speaking as someone who owns Office 2008, I can tell you that Word '08 is dramatically slower than Pages; it is nothing like Office '07 (or earlier) for Windows. Word '07 demands a fraction of the RAM that Word '08 for Mac does, which may or may not be releated to the legacy support for older formats that Office '08 includes.
Word does include a decent grammar checker, equation editor, and APA/MLA citation tool; however, Apple went a different route and made Pages instantly compatible with Mathtype and Endnote. My fiance is a math professor that teaches calculus, so she is no-doubt used to having to include mathematical equations and tricky text arrangements for exams, quizzes, and lesson plans; she used to use Word, but last year switched to Pages ('08) and loves it. When we downloaded the demo for iWork '09 and saw how well Mathtype integrated, she's a happy camper.
I haven't been all that impressed with Office '08, at least not as much as I was with Office '07 for Windows. I never thought I'd say it but I think money is better spent on iWork '09, and later getting Endnote or Mathtype (if needed), than purchasing Office '08. That's my take on it, and I've been using Word/Office since 6.0 on Windows 3.1.

No, because iPads do not run Mac OS X. They run iOS.

Grief! Yes, that is costly "solution" I looked on Amazon for USB2 for SATA drives and $40.
For that kind of price, MacGurus specializes in some hot-swap FW/USB/eSATA cases so you can use it with multiple drives (giant floppy).

  • I have Mac OSX Lion 10.7.4, Quickbooks Pro 2010, Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac, Operating in Windows 7.  Are there any recommendations for running Quickbooks Pro 2010?

I have Mac OSX Lion 10.7.4, Quickbooks Pro 2010, Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac, Operating in Windows 7.  Quicbooks Pro 2010 is not responding or opening currently. Quickbooks does not support Parallels anymore.  I hear Apple Bootcamp is an opton.  Are there any recommendations for running Quickbooks Pro 2010 on Mac?

QuickBooks Pro 2010 for Mac is not supported in Lion. QB Pro 2011 will work, but I just got an email today that 2011 will not be updated to work in Mountain Lion. QB Pro 2012 will be updated for ML.
Be aware that the Mac version of QuickBooks is shamefully lacking in features compared to the Windows version. I do use the Mac version, but it has more features than I need for a small business, so it doesn't affect me. No one knows why Intuit seems to hate Mac users, but they show it every day.
If QB Pro 2012 for Mac can be downloaded as a demo, I would strongly suggest testing with it before making a final decision. You will be able to import the Windows data, but possibly not all of it, depending on the Windows version features you use.
Boot Camp allows you to install Windows on its own, bootable partition. When you boot to it, you are of course running Windows in every sense of the word. Just on Mac hardware rather than typical PC gear. Your Windows version of QB will work there without issue. The problem is having to boot back and forth between Windows and OS X, depending on what software it is you need to use at the time.

  • Can I partition 256gb ssd and 1tb hard drive to be split 50 / 50 for Mac OS and windows?

I am going to buy a new iMac. The question is which storage option? If I get the 256GB ssd and the 1TB option, it appears the mac OS is pre installed on the ssd which is great.  I would then like to install windows 7 on the ssd using bootcamp, and partitioning the ssd to be half for mac and half windows.  I think this is the best thing to do... Correct? My main concern is then can I also split the 1 TB hard drive as well? Ideally I would like to split both drives 50 / 50, install the operating systems and software on the ssd and use the hard drive as general storage.  I have read mixed reports on the possibilities of this and would really appreciate your help and advice.  I am not that technical and would like to avoid using third party software, and stick to bootcamp if possible.
    Thanks all!

I suggest you open Boot Camp Assistant and click on the button to print the documentation. Read it carefully before using BCA. BCA only creates the partition. It does not format it. That is done with the Windows installer at the beginning of the Windows installation.
Although Windows can r/w NTFS volumes OS X can only read them. That means you can copy files from the Windows boot volume but not write files to it. If you need to move files to and from the Windows system you would use the data volume you will set up on the HDD. If you don't need to use files larger than 4 GBs in Windows then FAT32 is fine. Using ExFAT would only be advisable if you anticipate the need to handle files larger than the 4 GB limit of FAT32.

  • Is there a Mac equivalent to Windows "Print Screen"?

I couldn't help but notice that my mac keyboard doesn't have a "Prt Scn" button the way a Windows Keyboard does. I ask this because sometimes as I play UT2004, I like to get screen caps of the game itself. I no longer have a PC and I wish to continue to get screen caps of the game. Is there a mac equivalent to this? Or what else can I do?
    PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Well there is a screen capture in the game itself, I think it's one of the "F" keys. Look in the manual.
On a Mac a full screen capture can be invoked with a Apple (Command) Shift 3. Of course you'll have to quit to see it if your in UT2004 full screen mode. I don't know where UT2004 dumps it's screen capture at. Possible both on the desktop (wallpaper) where it should go.
There is also a Command Shift 4, which will give you a cross-hairs to select a part of the screen.
Combining any of the above with Control will place it right in the clipboard for pasting in your favorite program that can display it.
    Here is a master list
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75459
If you like UT2004 like I do, you know you can add a $hitload of maps and mods to what you get from the disks. I got a few hundred different maps myself.
First what you have to do is visit the UT2004 site and download the latest Mac update with Editor's Choice Bonus Pack combination.
It's kind of hard to find as it's not on some of the mirrored sites.
This is the one you want ut2004-macpatch3369-2.dmg.bz2
    on this page
    http://www.3dgamers.com/games/unrealtourn2k4/downloads/
Download and run this baby, you'll need the cd in at first but after that you won't need the cd anymore. You'll also get more maps and neat new vehicles.
Of after that, register on this site especially use a Mac user type name, like MacHead, just to show support in the gaming world for our platform.
    http://www.unrealplayground.com/index.php
and on the left side under UT2004 is a list of maps (CTF=Carry the flag etc etc.)
find which one you like and download it. There are TONS
Now to install it. Select the original UT2004 app in Applications folder and hold control key while clicking on it. A menu will popup which you select "open package contents" (the app is really a folder!)
Now you unzip the download and place similar extension files in the respective folders. I would start off with .ut2 that goes into Maps folder.
    .usx goes into StaticMeshes folder
    .utx goes into Textures folder
and so on, some downloads will include a text file so you put the correct files in the correct folders. (Like System for instance) Some downloads include their files in folders with the respective destination it's supposed to go into. Just take them out and place them in liked named ones in the UT2004 folder.
UT2004 seems to place new maps/mods at the bottom of the list when you go to select them in the game itself.
UT2004 will give days and days of repeated enjoyment, unlike other games that get worn-out once you've played them through.
Also when you get a chance, learn how to clone that boot drive of yours to a external drive for safekeeping. It takes so long to start over from scratch rebuilding in case of a hard drive failure, corruption or whatnot.
Cloning has to be done with software like Carbon Copy Cloner. Once you do it, you can hold option and boot directly off of it in case something goes wrong with your primary boot drive. Repair, recover or just erase and reverse clone the whole drive back over! It really is a lifesaver.

You "Zero" a new drive by using Disk Utility, select the drive and Erase with Zero option and format HFS+. It's very highly recommended for the best reliable writes to your drive.
If you have anymore questions, stop by again.

  • Recommended Partitioing for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux

I have a Mac Pro with three 500 GB Hard Drives. I would like to put Mac OS X on one, Windows on another and Linux on the third Drive.
I also would lik to share data between them. I understand that Windows cannot read or write to HFS+. But Linux can read and write to HFS (non journaled). The only common disk format that all OS's can read is FAT32.
For partitioning I am thinking of the following:
    Disk 1 -- Three Partitions
Partition 1 - Hidden EFI (size ?? and type??)
    Partition 2 - HFS+ for Mac OSX (200 GB)
Partition 3 - HFS+ for Data (190 GB or so)
    Disk 2 - Four Partitions
Partition 1 - NTFS for Sawp (4 GB)
Partition 2 - NTFS for Windows (200 GB)
Partition 3 - NTFS for Data (200 GB)
Partition 4 - FAT 32 for Shared Data (90 GB or so)
(P.S. I will have to use a special formatting program since windows only allows you to format FAT32 up to 32 GB or so).
    Disk 3 - Three Partitions
    Partition 1 - Linux Swap (4 GB)
    Partition 2 - / root (200 GB)
Partition 3 - Home (290 GB or so)
    Will this partitioning scheme work?
How big should the hidden EFI partition be and what is its type? HFS+?
    Rob

No need to use special software for formating windows drive. You can do it in Apple Disk Utilities application.
In Disk Utilities, select drive then partition. Select options and set as Master Boot Record (MBR). Set your partitions to the size you want. Set the format to MS-DOS File System for each partition. This will make them all FAT32. Erase each so that they have the FAT32 format.
When you install Windows, you can then format the one with Windows XP OS to NTFS. After XP is installed you can then convert the other 2 partitions to NTFS.
You now will have 3 NTFS partitions and 1 large FAT32 partition.
I did it this way but only 1 NTFS and 1 FAT32 partition and also on PATA drive in optical bay.

  • Can an iPod formatted for Macs play on Windows iTunes?

I have an iPod formatted for a Mac but have to use a Windows computer at work. Is there a way to play my iPod through the Windows iTunes player? I tried plugging it int through a USB adaptor, but my computer doesn't trecognize my iPod.
    Thanks!

If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). There are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows. XPlay for instance gets good reviews, you can find it at this link: XPlay 2
XPlay is currently only compatible with Windows XP, 2000, Me or 98SE, a new version for Vista is planned for release later this year.

  • I am having a problem w/ my itunes working correctly due to accidentally running Itunes through my troubleshooting, running programs made for previous versions of windows!! How do I turn it off?!??

I am having a problem w/ my Itunes working correctly, after accidentally running Itunes through my  troubleshooter  to, Run Programs Made For PreviousVersions of Windows. It keeps popping up that the Compatibility  Version is on, to make sure it's off before opening my Itunes Account. I've looked everywhere, Please, Please, How Do I Make This Right??!??

It sounds like either your hard drive or the SATA cable that connects it to the motherboard are failing. This could be heat related in your case, which is why you see it after it runs awhile. You can take it to the Genius Bar for a free evaluation. If you decide to test it yourself, I usually suggest moving the hard drive to an external enclosure. If it works there for awhile, the cable is probably the issue.
